Special Needs Services PROGRAM GUIDE 2015-2016 A COMMUNIT Y OF OPP OR TUNIT Y Message from the Director Dear Participants, Families, Caregivers, & Professionals, WE’RE HERE TO HELP! I am very excited to introduce myself to you as the new Director of Special Needs Services here at JCC MetroWest. In the short time that I have been with the agency, it has become very clear to me that we have a team of dedicated staff who offer valuable programs to those with special needs in our community. I have also gotten to know many of our participants and their warm smiles and enthusiasm for our programs reinforces my dedication to continue to provide enjoyable and meaningful programming. Chrystal and Robin, along with our part time staff and volunteers, all strive to meet the individual needs of our participants in every program that we offer. Just to give you a little bit of my background, I graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Psychology and then moved to NYC to attend graduate school at New York University where I earned a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. This specialized degree focuses on working with the special needs population and assisting them in living their lives as independently as possible. I have worked in many agency settings, my last being at the Arc of Essex where I supervised a respite program for both children and adults having special needs and challenging behaviors. My new role here at the JCC is a wonderful opportunity for me to take my wealth of experience and apply it to our specialized programs. Our department strives to accommodate individuals with special needs in all of the programs offered at JCC MetroWest, such as use of the fitness center, swim lessons, or music lessons in our Cultural Arts Department. When these mainstream options are not ideal, we offer a myriad of programs within our Special Needs Department to meet the needs of our participants. If there is a program that is of interest to you whether offered by our department or another, please reach out to us and we will do whatever we can to make it happen! As you turn the pages of this program guide, we hope that you will find inspiring programs from which to choose. Along with these programs, many are added throughout the year and can be found on our website and through program email updates. If you would like your name added to our email list, please let us know by contacting us directly. I would also like to note that our program guide is generously supported by our advertisers whom we would like to graciously thank for their support. Marisa P. Cohen, M.A., CRC Director 973-530-3478 / [email protected] Chrystal Henion, BA Assistant Director 973-530-3507 / [email protected] Please let us know if you have any suggestions or thoughts regarding our programs as they are always welcome and help us to make our programs even better. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to meeting you if I haven’t already! Warmly, Robin Cohen Program Administrator 973-530-3422 / [email protected] 2 JCC MetroWest | Special Needs Services Program Guide TABLE OF CONTENTS IMPORTANT NOTES • To register for a program, please call 973-530-3536 or email us at [email protected]. • Fall program registration begins August 2015. • Winter/Spring registration begins December 2015. • An intake interview for new participants is required prior to enrollment in programs. • All programs take place at the Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC in West Orange unless otherwise noted. • JCC Special Needs staff includes Certified Teachers of Students with Disabilities, social workers, therapists, and fitness and other professionals with extensive background working with individuals with special needs. • JCC Membership is not required. She did not know how to swim and needed tremendous encouragement by both her instructor and peers to enter the pool. Today, she is winning gold medals while competing in the Special Olympics! Her team, the Piranhas’, which is part of the Livingston YMCA, recently competed in the Essex County Special Olympics where Shawanda earned 4 gold medals in the 25 meter Butterfly (43 seconds), 50 meter Butterfly relay, 25 meter Breaststroke (50 seconds), and 50 meter Freestyle (1 minute 9 seconds). The first weekend of May, Shawanda competed in the Regional competition and earned another gold medal in the Freestyle 50 meter and a silver medal in the Butterfly 25 meter. She is excited to move on to compete in the National competition in Trenton, NJ and is hopeful to win more gold! Shawanda attributes her success to the patience and dedication of her swimming instructor, Doris Germansky and her training coach, Darrien Russel. She explained that Doris was extremely patient and supportive in her early swim days and would spend extra time with Shawanda to help her develop strong swimming skills. When she began searching for a coach to help her train for the Special Olympics, Darrien stepped forward and has helped her to achieve many wins! Shawanda explained that when she is swimming she “feels like she is in a different world and like she is flying.” She went on to describe that she really does “feel like a dolphin” when she is swimming in the pool! We are very proud of Shawanda and her commitment to her swimming goals and wish her all the best in her future competitions! See Israel with us! This year’s theme was “Pajama-Jam” and the event was one for the record books, raising over $20,000! Each year a dedicated group of teens from our community and participants in our Special Needs programs plan this exciting event. They work together to choose the theme, plan the activities, create the decorations, secure raffle prizes and solicit donations. On the day of the event they help to set up and encourage everyone to get out on the dance floor and have fun. It is a wonderful evening filled with dancing, games and fun with friends. The Dance-A-Thon helps to bring in funds for our department which aides in providing valuable programs throughout the year. We are excited to announce our 2016 fundraiser, Cycle for Special Needs Services-A Celebration of All Abilities.
