I
n September of 1648 the Dutch East
India ship, the Utrecht, was sunk
during an engagement with the
Portuguese ship, Nossa Senhora Do Rosario, off
the coast of Brazil. The Utrecht and another
Dutch ship, the Huys Nassau, attacked the
Rosario in an attempt to board and capture it.
The captain of the Rosario, following orders
not to allow his vessel to fall into enemy hands,
blew up his ship. The explosion also sank the
Utrecht and damaged the Nassau.

The archaeological findings from this ship
represent the largest collection of pewter
artifacts found on a shipwreck. We have

Old English Style Porringers, Circa 1680 - 1800

These porringers were a common type produced in
both England and America. They are available in
one and two handled varieties.
Swiss / German Flagon, circa 1750 - 1800. P154B.
Called a “Bauchkanne.” Features ram’s head on the lid and dual
acorn thumbpiece. Very similar to mid-late 17th C. flagons. 9" tall.

Reproduction tankard and beaker beautifully decorated
in a style of engraving called wriggle work. Features portrait
of King William the III and Queen Mary with the lion
and unicorn of the British coat of arms. Based on artifacts
in the Victoria and Albert Museum of London.
