Built on the footprint of Laurance S. Rockefeller’s original
RockResort, framed by coral reefs and embraced by a lush
tropical forest, Dorado Beach is one of the top 100 most
sustainable hotels in the world. Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a new
ultra-luxury brand, delivering elevated service with environmental
sensibility in one-of-a-kind locations. Dorado Beach is only the
second Ritz-Carlton Reserve hotel to open worldwide and the first
in the Americas, joining Phulay Bay on the Thai island of Krabi,
which opened in December 2009.
Mauricio Ballesteros is the project manager for Bermudez & Longo
Diaz Masso (BLDM) as well as the mechanical and electrical contractor
for the Ritz-Carlton Reserve.
“All rooms are oceanfront, literally seconds from the beach,”
Ballesteros said. “And 70% of them have plunge pools.”
Located 15 miles west of San Juan on Puerto Rico’s northern coast,
Dorado Beach is renowned as one of the Caribbean’s most pristine
island environments. The Ritz-Carlton Reserve intends to maintain the
island’s natural beauty while offering luxurious accommodations that
are not only world class but also sustainable.
Ballesteros explained that a unique feature of the Ritz-Carlton Reserve
brand is that guests are assigned a personal concierge to handle
requests, arrangements and reservations.
“Guests will not be dealing with three to four different staff members
during their stay,” Ballesteros said. “They will have one person who
will deliver room service and whatever else they need. We want to
personalize their stay with us as much as possible.”
With 115 guestrooms spread across 50 acres and one mile of
beachfront, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico is a luxurious
sanctuary that taps into the historical influences of Rockefeller’s
concern for protecting nature. The Reserve opens as a low-rise,
low-density hotel of three-story buildings on the footprint of
the original RockResort hotel that Rockefeller designed in
the late ’50s.
Laurance S. Rockefeller (1910-2004), a philanthropist dedicated
to preserving nature and natural environments, introduced the
world to the idea of eco-friendly luxury island resorts when he
unveiled Dorado Beach more than 50 years ago. Now, as the
Ritz-Carlton continues his legacy, the design and infrastructure
of this new and improved resort reflects the remarkable natural
surroundings and still incorporates luxurious accommodations.
“The resort includes the five-acre Spa Botanico with 12 treatment
rooms plus two rooms constructed in tree house style,”
Ballesteros said.
The resort also features three miles of beach along with walking trails,
a fitness center and three 18-hole golf courses. Guests will have
plenty of options for recreation. And with three restaurants, including
one headed by Spanish chef Jose Andres, guests won’t run out of
options for world-class meals either. The resort also offers Jean-Michel
Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program for families.
All plumbing systems for the entire hotel’s guestrooms, spa
facilities and residences were installed using Viega ProPress and
Viega PEX systems.
“Viega has helped us to achieve our time goals,” Ballesteros said,
“by making the installations quicker and easier with no stress of
possible leaks.”
