Merry Christmas!
C
hristmas is a time we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
It’s a time for giving and coming together with family and friends to celebrate
life and love; the love God has for us and the love we have for each other. It’s
also a time for children and watching their eyes sparkle from the beautiful lights on
the tree or opening a brightly wrapped present.
For this December issue, we are so excited
Santa was able to break away from his busy
schedule to pose for us again! He and Mrs.
Claus shared our first Christmas cover in
2007. This year, he is joined by our beautiful
cover model, Madison Williams. Madison is
four years old and the daughter of Elizabeth
and Chris Williams. She has a new baby sister
named Maci Kate and she loves being a big
sister.
Madison is a loving, out-going child with
loads of personality. You would never know
that at the age of two, Madison had a scary
experience when she was bitten in the face
by their dog. Her parents rushed her to the
Paulding ER, where she was then transported
to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for corrective
plastic surgery. Her mom never left her side. After a week, when the swelling went
down, Elizabeth and Chris had a miracle! Her lip looked amazing; as if she had a tiny
scratch going from her nose to her mouth.
The best part for them was their sweet baby
girl seemed un-phased and still had the
most kissable lips they had ever seen.
Madison is very nurturing and loves to help
her mom take care of Maci. When asked
what she wanted for Christmas, she replied,
“I don’t want anything, I just want Maci to
get presents.” Madison is very smart, and
enjoys school, dancing, the beach, dolphins
and Taylor Swift! She also loves to draw
and wants to be an artist when she grows
up. She loves life and her bubbly personality makes her impossible not to love.
We think Madison was a perfect choice for
an early visit with Santa! In fact, after her
visit, she told everyone in her class about
taking pictures with Santa for Our Town,
and that, “Santa let me wear his hat!”

ohn Bradley, founder and CEO of Integrated Health Solutions of Marietta (IHS)
says, “In 2007, God conveyed to me that He wished to have a multi-disciplinary
healthcare clinic; one that would be staffed by His chosen children possessing the
gifts and talents that He gave them on this earth to help others.” Without any means
or resources to make that happen, John simply said, “yes.” Because of that obedience,
IHS was given the opportunity of birth by the intercession and help of others.
At Integrated Health Solutions they know that every member of the staff, from the
healthcare professionals to the front office personnel has been called by name to this
project. Because it is in His name that they operate, every patient comes first. Upon
entering the office, patients and visitors immediately experience that “family feeling”. John Bradley says, “You will definitely not experience a two minute office visit here at
IHS, but feel enveloped with our care. IHS is a mission and a calling before anything
else and we urge you to make an appointment for your healthcare needs and let us
show you what we mean.”
The IHS Mission:
Integrated Health Solutions is
driven with a desire to see all
of God’s children experience
the healthiest of lives possible.
IHS began as a small chiropractic clinic and has grown into
a complete comprehensive
healthcare clinic with a reputation for solving the impossible.
As God continues to add members to the team, the ability to
help those in the community
continues to increase. They
still offer chiropractic services,
but have added a naturopath,
deep tissue specialist, corrective exercise and therapies,
counselors, and in 2011 they
added medical doctor, Dr.
Belinda Millington MD, DC.
The entire team has one desire
in mind; helping to heal their
fellow brothers and sisters in
the community. By working
together and offering traditional medical care, with the support of natural remedies, IHS offers solutions to
many healthcare needs that are outside of traditional thinking. They have seen thousands of cases where this approach leads to healthier, longer lasting, and less dangerous outcomes for their patients.
4900 Ivey Road, Suite 1220 Acworth, GA 30101

The commitment that IHS has made to our community extends to outreach programs, speaking events, seminars, health fairs and virtually anywhere they can spread
the message. John Bradley explains, “With this promise to our Creator, we will treat
this gift and His children with the utmost respect. IHS is unlike any other healthcare
clinic. Although we accept most major insurance plans, no one is turned away that
needs our help. We understand the need to survive and make financial responsibilities, but we also know that the need to take care of all who need our help comes
first. This is why we are implementing our next branch of service that we call ‘Care
for Care.’ We hope you will help us in answering this call with your support and your
prayers. Come and give us a chance to show you what health-care is really like.”
The Doctors at Integrated Health Solutions of Marietta are now accepting new
patients. Integrated Health Solutions of Marietta is located at 3405 Dallas Hwy, Suite
301 in Marietta. Call them at 678-581-8442 or visit them online at www.IHSMarietta.

Safety Tips
By Mary B. Hammock,
MSN, CPNP
T
he holidays are incredibly joyous times spent
with loving family and
friends, good food, gifts and games.
Don’t let inattention or neglect
make your holidays unsafe. A quick
review of your home environment
can avoid dangerous and unsafe
situations.
Featuring a “Quick Care Walk-In Clinic”
Monday - Friday 8:00 - 10:00am
Office Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm
Decorations really bring out the
spirit of the holidays. Check
all lights, trees and electrical
decorations, new and used, to verify there are no damaged wires and that they are
functioning properly. Don’t overload electrical outlets, and unplug lit decorations
before leaving home or going to bed. Be sure your smoke detectors are in good
working order.

Place your Christmas tree a safe distance from all heating sources. If it is a natural
tree, choose a fresh tree and water regularly to keep it from drying out, which would
make it more prone to catch fire. If your tree is artificial, be sure it meets safety codes
for being fire resistant. Never decorate a tree with candles or use lighted candles in
windows or near exits. Never leave candles unattended or down on table runners
or tablecloths that can be pulled by children. Avoid leaving fragile glass decorations,
both on the tree or tabletops, that are within reach of children.
Gift wrap and associated items, including ribbons, bags and balloons can be a risk
for suffocation and choking to small children. Watch for long strings that can be a
strangulation risk. When purchasing or unwrapping presents, make sure the gifts are
age appropriate for the child and read all instructions. Be sure to show your children
how to use the toy and its parts correctly; and always use safety equipment – helmets,
pads, eye protection – when appropriate.

A lot of food is consumed during the holidays. Food poisoning can cause severe illness and spoil a great time. Wash your hands often while preparing food. Keep hot
foods hot and cold foods cold. Raw fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly. Meats should be thawed in the refrigerator and cooked thoroughly. Don’t
leave food that should be refrigerated at room temperature more than two hours; and
remember to keep hot foods away from the edge of the table or counter to prevent
burns to curious little ones.
Suite 201 l Marietta
Conveniently located across from The Avenue West Cobb
During the holidays, there are more drivers on the road than normal. As always,
buckle up and use car seats and booster seats properly. Keep children under 12 years
old in the back seat and keep children less than 57” tall in booster seats.
We provide an environment
where kids can have a
fun and happy dental
experience while
receiving the very
best dental care
available. Come tour
our state of the art office
with with themed rooms
representing each continent
from around the world.
There will be many festive occasions and some will require a babysitter to stay with
your children. Be sure to leave the sitter with all contact information for you and persons to call if you can’t be reached. Leave Poison Control’s number on the refrigerator:1-800-222-1222, along with your pediatric healthcare provider’s contact information. Be sure to leave all the necessary information about your children – name, age,
weight, allergies and bedtime routines – in an accessible place. Hiring a sitter with
CPR training is added benefit.
Michael A. Rossitch, DDS, MS, PC Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry
Holidays are a time when many hazards arise around the home, when visiting others
and in the community. Take some time to ensure safe surroundings and you may be
able to avoid disastrous events. Healthy Steps Pediatrics is helping to GROW healthy
children one step at a time. We wish you the happiest of holidays and continued
blessings in 2013.

6 Fun Ways to Celebrate Christmas with Your Teens
By Ivana Pejakovic, B.Sc., MA
M
ost people will agree that Christmas
and other holidays are best when spent
with the immediate (and extended)
family. Add in amusing activities, a good attitude,
and you will notice an improvement in the quality of the holidays.
The only way to teach
your teens to value
family is by showing them you value
it too. This is done
through the time you spend
with each other and by the
amount of effort you put in
during important (and not
so important) times of the
year. Consider including the
following ideas to help make
your Christmas more festive
this season. The 2 common themes you will notice in
each of the activities are: 1) Family togetherness and
2) Fun. Fun is the glue that keeps families coming back
to celebrate traditions. Boring traditions get quickly
dropped or become dreaded. Customize them in whatever way it will enhance your family experience.
Attend a religious ceremony: Many religious cer-
sends the message they are important and their company
is essential. It gives your teens a place to belong, a place
where their opinion counts, and a place where they are
wanted.
Family Christmas party: This is not about hosting a
formal sit down dinner. This is about inviting over the
aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and just having fun. Turn on the Christmas music, wear fun clothes,
take out the baked favorites, and create a fun and loving
time. This is more about promoting the importance of
family, having the adults and kids mingle, and creating
fun tradition for your child, than it is about being the
perfect host.
Create your own Christmas
cards: Computer programs
and application can do wonders
today. It is possible for people
to make their own Christmas
cards. Why not create a card
together with your family (e.g.,
decide on the theme, the written content, design on the
outside and a design on the
inside and ask each person to
be responsible for one aspect
of the card). Remember, handing out cards is more about the
thought and effort than it is about the sophistication and
price. A card that comes from the heart sends out more
positive energy than a card bought in a rush and without
feeling.
Favorite recipes: We all have ‘em so why not make
‘em together? This is a perfect opportunity for parents to
bond with kids through communication. Communication
is always easier when enjoying a fun activity. This really is
an activity that ought to include mom, dad, and the kids.
Put aside traditional gender roles, put aside the need to
be doing work, and instead make it a priority to spend
time with your kids.
Secret Santa: Play secret Santa with a twist: No pur-

“Finally Free from Arthritis Pain
Without Drugs and
Harmful Side Effects”
Living with arthritis pain can affect every part
of your life.
It’s keeps you from enjoying the good things
in life – time with grandkids, playing golf,
even working in the yard.
It would be nice to get out of bed – just one
morning – without pain.
Every time you try and push through the
pain…like standing or walking for a long
period of time…you pay for it for the next
2-3 days with even more pain.
Do you have any of the these
Arthritic problems?
a
a
a
a
a
a
Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Bursitis/tendonitis
Degenerative joint disease
Lumbar disc problems
Aching pain in the arms or legs
Pain Pills Are Not The Answer
Do you remember the Vioxx scandal?
However, old age is not the cause of your
arthritis. I’ll venture to say all 360 joints in
your body are the same age, yet arthritis and
joint degeneration has not affected every one
of them – only your previously injured joints
that never healed properly.
My name is Dr. Amy Valente owner of North
Cobb Spine and Nerve Institute. Over the
past six years since we’ve opened the doors,
I’ve seen hundreds of people come in suffering with arthritis and leave the office pain
free.
I’ve made it my mission in practice to help
those suffering with chronic pain like you.
“I only wished I had found you sooner”
I hear this too often, so I decided to do
something about it and run this ad. Just call
before December 15th and you’ll get my
“Arthritis Evaluation” for only $20.
= An in-depth consultation about your
arthritis where I will listen…really listen.
= A complete nerve, muscle and spinal
exam to find the “cause” of your problem.
It was a medication designed to relieve
arthritis pain…but like all drugs, it had side
effects.
= A full set of specialized x-rays to look for
joint degeneration (arthritis)… (NOTE: These
would normally cost you at least $200).
After years of use worldwide, the makers
withdrew it from the market because of the
overwhelming evidence it caused heart attacks and strokes.
= A thorough analysis of your exam and
x-ray findings so I can show you how to fix
the problem.
There’s a time to use pain medications, BUT
not before seeking a natural way to correct
the CAUSE of the problem! Ask yourself …
after taking all these pain medications…
maybe for years…are you any better off?
I’ll answer all your questions about chiropractic and arthritis pain. The appointment
will not take long at all and you won’t be
sitting in a waiting room all day either.
To take me up on this special offer, you must
call before December 15th.
Pain Is Not Just ‘Old Age’
Have you had one doctor after another telling
you this is just the natural process of the
body getting older - that you should expect
to have arthritis. Sure, if you don’t take care
of your damaged joints now, as you get
older they will be worse (which is why you
shouldn’t wait any longer to see if I can help
you.)
“I came into the office with terrible hip
pain and stiffness. Now I am able to
move around without all of the pain!
Before I came to the office I had a lot
of trouble sleeping but now I can sleep
7 hours a night without taking any
medication!”
– Thanks! D. Hames
“When I came into the office I was
dealing with pain that at times, left me
unable to function normally. Activities
such as working out, doing yard work
and lifting my grandson were difficult.
Now that I am getting well I feel like
a normal person again. I can exercise,
lift weights and even lift my grandson
without worrying about the pain!”
-Thanks again!
K. Sears
With my “Arthritis Evaluation”, we can find
the problem and then correct it. Think of how
you could feel in just a few short weeks. See
and feel your life change for the better. Start
your body on the way to pain-free, normal living. Feel tight joints rest, relax, free up. Feel
muscles tied in knots become more supple.
Feel strength in your muscles increase.
As you begin to see motion returning to
your joints, you’re preventing and reducing
chances of disability and a crippling future.
You’re playing golf again -- hitting longer
drives, smoother putts, and lower scores…
without pain.
Arthritis can be successfully treated.
Healthy, pain-free living should be
yours.

Weight Management Tips for the Holidays
Dr. J. Goldklang, SNAP Medical Weight Loss
L
Sometimes we
‘hold off ’ on
eating when
we know we
will be attending an event
because we are
thinking about all
the good things
that will be there
for us to eat. Stay
with your regular
meal/snack schedule, so not going in
hungry will help you
make better choices.
osing weight can be difficult any day of the
year, but now with the
Holidays arriving, a little
planning can go a long way.
Knowing that temptation
lies ahead, and having some
strategies to deal with what is
coming, is the first step in getting through the Holidays without gaining unwanted pounds.
Always realize that it is what you are doing
most of the time that matters more than
what happens at the few events you will attend.
Although those get-togethers might add up to a
really big collection of calories, it matters more
that you have every-day strategies in place that
will keep your metabolism up throughout each
day. That way those delicious treats awaiting us can
more easily average in to your long-term weight
management routine.
2) Watch Your
Alcohol Intake: There are a lots of hidden and ‘empty’ calories
in those drinks! If you
are having some social
drinks, always accompany
each drink with a glass
of regular or soda water.
Try having a seltzer with a
lime twist or water between
Here are some Holiday eating tips:
1) Eat Before You Go:
Before heading out have a small, healthy meal so
you don’t go into a situation with hunger building up.
drinks to pace yourself, as well as to keep you hydrated.
3) Don’t Stand By The Food At The Party:
When we are socializing, we sometimes go on ‘automatic’
and do not realize how many of those bacon wrapped
shrimp we just polished off! To avoid those automatic
responses to having tasty food right next to us, take a little
on a plate and move around, away from the food table.
4) Slow Down:
When faced with a dazzling array of sweets and good food,
our impulse to try everything can be overwhelming. Slow
down and pace yourself, so you really enjoy what’s there.
You can have a little bit of several things, or just save it up
for one indulgence, either way be sure to include dessert
into your total calorie equation for the night.
5) Stay With The Plan:
Maintaining a consistent schedule of three meals and two
snacks (what we recommend for every day) is key through
the Holidays. Staying on track does not mean that every
event is perfect nutritionally; it means that even if you
have a blow-out office party, or Mom’s macaroni and
cheese is calling your name, realize it is just one day, and
not a reason to go totally off track. By keeping your nutritional balance even with the get-togethers and Holiday
meals, you can maintain your metabolism and keep your
weight on track.

Top Reasons
to Get an
Estate Plan
By Frank J. Velton
M
any individuals feel that they do not have sufficient assets to make an estate
plan. However, you must realize that creating an estate plan can be extremely
valuable and advantageous, even to those without a large number of assets.
Here are just some of the many reasons that estate planning can be advantageous to
both you and your heirs:
1. You avoid probate
An estate plan will avoid putting your family members through the lengthy, expensive
and emotionally draining court probate process. Avoiding probate is among the
most common reasons individuals choose to seek the advice of an estate planning
attorney.
2. You avoid family complications

Whether in trust or will form, an estate plan will ensure that your assets go to
whomever you want, when you want, and in the manner in which you want it. An
estate plan allows you to divide your assets according to how you wish. You are able
to select who gets your home, and who gets your investments. Without preparing an
estate plan, you will have no control over who gets what assets. By making a proper
estate plan, you will be able to prevent causing much-dreaded drama and legal battles
among family members.
3. You help heirs save on taxes, legal fees, and time

An estate plan is a wonderful way to protect both minor and adult beneficiaries. You
can prevent legal expenses and family discord by designating a trustee and guardian
for your minor beneficiaries, while you can also protect your adult beneficiaries from
creditor problems, divorcing spouses, outside influences, and making bad decisions.

5. It gives you peace of mind
With a well thought out estate plan, you will feel better and have peace of mind
knowing that you are prepared for no matter what the future brings, and that you
have a team ready to carry out these plans. You will be able to take legal concerns off
your mind and truly enjoy your life.

It’s a given that everyone wants to save on taxes and fees, but preparing an estate
plan will also help save time. With trusts, you will allow your family to shorten the
settlement process significantly, and you will be able to make the entire process less
burdensome.

A significant amount of money and time can be wasted by one’s failure to create an
estate plan. One of the greatest motivators for individuals to put together an estate
plan is the significant loss of one’s estate due to payment of federal or state estate taxes
or even state inheritance taxes. With even the most basic estate planning, couples can
reduce or eliminate estate taxes.

Florence has many memories of her childhood as a sharecropper’s daughter.
Florence has lived in either Cobb or Paulding county all of her life. She recalls walking to Vernon School and the horse-and-buggy trips to services at Poplar Springs
Baptist Church in Hiram. She was baptized there at the age of 13, and anyone who
knows her realizes that she is not only a dedicated church member, but a Christian
lady who sets an example for everyone.

Florence met Marshall Jennings at a square dance. She and Marshall became “sweethearts” and were together over two years before they were married on January 11,
1930 when she was 17 years old. She delivered her first child MJ on October, 1930
and a daughter, Marjorie, in 1932.
770-943-2484 www.PraiseAcademy.com
4052 Hiram Lithia Springs Road, Powder Springs, GA 30127
Big Mama remembers hard times in the 1930’s, and speaks of not having soap for
washing the children’s clothes, buy instead boiling them in an old black pot. Florence
and Marshall sharecropped on “halves”; giving the land owner half of all crops they
raised. In exchange, certain groceries would be furnished by the land owner during
crop season.
Florence made all of her family’s clothes and still claims “the softest underwear is
made from flour sacks.” In 1937, she began working for at the thread mill for Clark
Thread Company in Austell; now known as Coats & Clark, Inc. Florence and Marshall
bought their first home in Powder Springs. They farmed on rented land by day and
worked at the mill at night. Then in 1945, the Jennings’ purchased their own farm
with 40 acres in Hiram. They raised cotton, corn, beans, tomatoes and syrup cane, as
well as cattle, pigs and chickens. They sold their cotton at the gin in Hiram.
Florence and Marshall got their first washing machine in the early 1950’s, a wringer
model. They continued to prosper and added an indoor bathroom to the farmhouse
around 1960, and their first telephone in 1963. On her 60th birthday in 1972,
Florence retired from Coats and Clark after 35 years. Shortly after, she and Marshall
purchased their first television.
Following her husband’s death in 1983, she became the first woman to take title of
the Hiram farm property since being owned by the Cherokee nation. She has all of
the deeds indicating every change in ownership.
Big Mama continues to “roll with the changes” in life. After a fall around the age of 90
kept her from using her clothesline, she finally purchased a dryer. In October 2011,
at age 98, Big Mama fell; breaking her femur. She had to have a rod put into her leg.
The surgeon told the family that he had rarely seen someone in their 80’s walk again
following such a surgery, and no one in their 90’s. Big Mama was home by December
and walking shortly thereafter. To date, Florence has two children, five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren
and twenty great-great-grandchildren. She is still mentally agile, and even hosts
a book club. Just recently they discussed Rick Bragg’s book “The Most They Ever
Had.”
Our Town would like to thank Mrs. Jennings grand-daughters Sheila Tidwell of
Indigo Falls and Angel Byrd of Georgia Heritage Bank for their assistance with this
article. If you would like to send well wishes to “Big Mama” they can be made via
Angel at [email protected].

Victorian
ChristmasDecorations
By Ruth Butters
L
ush and lavish are the
key concepts in Victorian
Christmas decorations.
Rich colors, luxurious fabrics,
and splendidly over-the-top
embellishments make this
style the epitome of sumptuous holiday elegance.
The Victorian period (18371901) was known for strict
rules of behavior that regulated everything from etiquette
to morality, but the styles,
fashions, and tastes of the day were
anything but Puritanical. In both
Europe and the U.S. a burgeoning middle class were enjoying the
economic effects of the industrial
revolution, and they reveled in displaying their newfound affluence.
In an era when even everyday items were often ornately decorated, the holiday season
was an annual explosion of color, shine, and exuberant rococo profusion. Here are
some tips for giving a Victorian air to your holiday decor.
4109 Jimmy Lee Smith Pkwy, Suite D
Academy Sports-Kmart Center/Corner of Hwy 278 and 92
Hiram, GA 30141
770.943.6447
Use color to set the mood
The Victorians loved color and used it everywhere, sometimes in combinations that
we would find surprising today. But very bright shades (including the fire engine
red and apple green that we associate with Christmas now) were seldom seen in the
decorations of the era. Colors that are typical of the period include deep gem tones
of red, blue, green, and purple, along with shades of gold and cream.
Try decorating your tree with ornaments in deep gem tones, and replace bright tinsel
garland with swaths of broad burgundy red ribbon. Add accents with cream-colored
bows and shiny gold balls or figurines. If you don’t care for deep tones, try going
with a pastel theme. While not as historically accurate, light shades of dusty pink or
blue mixed with cream and ecru and highlighted with plenty of gold can create a
breathtaking period look. Strings of pearly beads make a dazzling accent to a pastel
holiday theme.
Lots of greenery wherever you look
Boughs of pine and other greenery were a basic component of holiday decor during
the period. Carefully arranged with fruit, flowers, candles, and ornaments or woven
into garlands, greenery was everywhere.
Hang pine garland wherever you can - festooned on staircases, surrounding doorways, and draped over mirrors and mantle pieces. Weave broad ribbon, silky fabric,
or thick gold decorative rope through the branches and decorate with bows, flowers,
figurines, ornaments, and tiny wrapped packages.
Strictly speaking, electric Christmas lights aren’t really part of period holiday decor.
But they’re very much in keeping with the decorating spirit of the era, and using
slightly gold-tinted mini lights creates a warm glow reminiscent of candlelight.

When in doubt, embellish!
The Victorians had a real “more is better” ethic about decorating, particularly when
it came to decorative ornamentation. The question was rarely “which one should I
use?” but rather, “How many can I fit into the space?” This is particularly true of the
holiday decor of the period.
To capture the mood of the era, go lavish with everything and decorate everywhere.
Don’t stop with hanging the garlands and decorating the tree. Make arrangements
with flowers, candles, ornaments, ribbon and greenery on tables, mantles, piano tops,
shelves; every flat surface is eligible. And don’t think in terms of “either or” - think
“both and” instead. When you’re creating an arrangement, use bows and ornaments
and fruit; or pearls, flowers, and lace; or bows, ornaments, fruit, pearls, flowers,
and…..well, you get the picture.

Gifts that Give to Sportsmen and Wildlife:
Lifetime Licenses and GORP
measure through which states receive Wildlife and Sport
Fish Restoration funding.
For 75 years, the Federal Wildlife and Sport Fish
Restoration program (http://wsfr75.com) has channeled
dedicated excise taxes on sporting equipment – more
than $14 billion nationwide since 1937 – to states to
manage fish and wildlife and provide recreational opportunities. Uses in Georgia vary from funding public fishing
areas to managing the state’s 1 million-strong deer herd.
Georgia receives federal funds only for paid licenses.
Avid hunters and anglers who buy a discount lifetime
license ($95) at age 60, rather than waiting for a free lifetime license at age 65, ensure that their excise taxes are
returned to Georgia for the rest of their life.
GORP is also a gift that gives. The pass helps pay for
needed maintenance at wildlife management and public
fishing areas that receive significant use for recreation
other than hunting and fishing. Implemented Jan. 1,
GORP has raised more than $100,000 for projects including boardwalk renovations at Grand Bay WMA and camping area repairs at Crockford-Pigeon Mountain WMA. l The price for ages 16 to 59 is $500.
l Discount lifetime licenses for resident adults age 60
to 64 are $95.
S
anta should take note. This holiday season, the
Georgia Wildlife Resources Division is offering gifts
guaranteed to please hunters, anglers and other
wildlife enthusiasts, and benefit the wildlife and wild
places they enjoy.
Before heading to the stores, go online to
www.GeorgiaWildlife.com to learn more about: Lifetime Sportsman Licenses
With a lifetime license, the Georgia resident hunter or
angler on your gift list will not need to pay for another
state hunting or fishing license. EVER! From hunting
trophy whitetails to casting for lunker largemouths,
their cherished recreation is covered. Applications and
document details are at www.GeorgiaWildlife.com/
LifetimeLicense. Prices are set by age group:
l Residents 65 and older can receive a free lifetime
license, with an option to pay a one-time fee of $10 for a
durable, commemorative plastic card.
l The best bargain is for children: $200 for under 2 years
old and $350 for kids age 2 to 15. That’s a potential savings of more than $2,600 over a lifetime.
Annual GORPs
A Georgia Outdoor Recreational Pass, or GORP, is required
for non-hunting or non-fishing recreation such as birding, horseback riding and hiking at 32 sites managed by
the Wildlife Resources Division. Sites include the popular Crockford Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management
Area (WMA) in northwest Georgia; Charlie Elliott Wildlife
Center, about one hour east of Atlanta; and Grand Bay
WMA in southeast Georgia.
One of the best bargains for outdoors lovers is the annual GORP. Good for a year from the date of purchase, the
annual permit costs only $19 for people ages 16 to 64.
(Those older than 64 and younger than 15 are exempt
from the pass.) GORPs are available at GeorgiaWildlife.
com under License/Permits/Passes or by phone (800-3662661).Transaction fees apply. Social Security number
required.
Even more special …
A lifetime license or annual GORP not only provides
access to the great outdoors, proceeds support Georgia
wildlife and state-managed lands.
So skip the wrapping paper this year, and give to the
adventurer on your gift list and all Georgia wildlife with a
Lifetime Sportsman License or annual Georgia Outdoor
Recreational Pass.
The Wildlife Resources Division, part of the state
Department of Natural Resources, uses hunting and fishing license sales to fulfill its wildlife mission. Yet sales
of Lifetime, Sportsman and other licenses are also a key

ISABELLE (DOB ~09/24/2002) is a
gorgeous petite senior female Silver Shaded Persian whose family
could no longer keep her – because
the family is expecting a new baby
(they’ve had ISABELLE since she
was 5 months old). ISABELLE is a
bit shy with new people, but once
she gets to know you, she enjoys
being held like a baby so she can
make biscuits. She doesn’t mind grooming, enjoys catnip and laser pointers, and likes to
play after the sun goes down (she is a bit of a night owl!). She is definitely looking for her
“retirement home,” but will continue to provide her new family with loads of love and companionship for some time to come. ISABELLE is spayed, up-to-date with vaccines, negative
for Feline FIV/FeLV, microchipped, dewormed, has received flea and ear mite preventative, and
is eligible to receive at least 30 days of prepaid pet health insurance at the time of adoption.
ISABELLE’s adoption fee is our senior rate of $100.00.

‘Snowbird’ Hummers
Need Feeders in Winter
Hiram Animal Hospital
Established 1985
eep your hummingbird feeders filled and available this fall and winter.
That’s the recommendation of Georgia Wildlife Resources Division
biologists, who know that some hummers spend winter in the state and
benefit from the nourishment feeders offer.
Twelve hummingbird species have been recorded in Georgia. But while the
only one that nests here - the ruby-throated hummingbird - migrates south and
leaves the U.S. by mid-October, species from the western U.S. and Central America
sometimes show up as early as August and stay until about April. These newcomers
include rufous hummingbirds, which have the longest migration route of any hummer, and the calliope hummingbird, the smallest bird in the nation.
Many Georgians once took their feeders down in fall for fear the free food would
keep hummingbirds from migrating. But the birds migrate in response to day length,
not food supply. Keeping feeders up in the winter does not hinder migration. Instead,
some fortunate homeowners with full feeders have enjoyed playing host to rare visiting hummingbirds in winter.
“People enjoy doing it. (And) we get good information” involving the birds, said
Jim Ozier, a program manager with the Wildlife Resources Division’s Nongame
Conservation Section, all part of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The rufous is the most commonly seen wintering hummer in the Southeast. This species flits from breeding ranges that extend from the Pacific Northwest as far north as
southern Alaska to its primary wintering grounds in south-central Mexico. However,
a few rufous hummingbirds take a different path and are spotted throughout Georgia
and the rest of the Southeast during winter.
The calliope hummer is another snowbird, colorful but tiny at about a 10th of an
ounce. A calliope was first recorded in the Peach State during the winter of 19981999. The website www.GaHummer.org reports that winter 2010-2011 highlights
included a buff-bellied hummingbird spotted on Jekyll Island, a broad-tailed hummer
in Douglasville and an Allen’s in Braselton.
Western hummingbird species can be difficult to identify. But Georgians can contact
Wildlife Resources’ Nongame Conservation Section in Forsyth at (478) 994-1438,
about hummer sightings. These reports document the incidence of wintering hummers and help biologists determine the birds’ habitat needs.
Georgians can help conserve endangered and other nongame wildlife by purchasing
or renewing a bald eagle or hummingbird license plate, contributing to the Georgia
Wildlife Conservation Fund through the state income tax check off or donating directly to the fund. Each option provides vital support for the Nongame Conservation
Section, which receives no state appropriations for its mission to conserve wildlife
not hunted, fished for or trapped, as well as rare plants and natural habitats.
Visit www.GeorgiaWildlife.org/conservation for more information, or call Nongame
Conservation offices in Social Circle (770) 761-3035, Forsyth (478) 994-1438 or
Brunswick (912) 264-7218.

National Fruitcake Month
F
ruit cake is synonymous with Christmas and
the holidays; and at my Mom’s house, you can’t have
Christmas without one. Fruit cake is described as a cake made
with chopped candied fruit, dried nuts, and spices. There are many recipes
online, but fortunately you don’t have to be a “chef ” to make one. The most
FAMOUS fruit cake by far is made by the Claxton Fruit Cake Company.
The Claxton Fruit Cake Company has a rich, interesting history that goes
back nearly 100 years! They continue to have a strong commitment of quality,
value and service to their customers locally and around the world. With this in
mind, they have developed some delicious recipes using their fruit cake:
Claxton Dream Cake
1/2 Lb. Claxton Fruit Cake
1 Box White Cake Mix
3 Eggs
2 Tablespoons Oil
1 Cup Water
Mix cake mix, eggs, oil and water in a mixing bowl. Add
fruit cake pieces and hand mix. Place in a 9” x 13” greased
pan then back at 350 degrees, 30 minutes or until done.
Glaze while hot. Chopped nuts can be added. Serve warm
with vanilla ice cream, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar or with
whipped cream and a cherry.
Claxton Coconut Balls
1 Lb. Claxton Fruit Cake
3/4 Cup Coconut Flakes
1 Cup Powered Sugar
1 Tablespoon Almond Flavoring
Shape fruit cake into balls. Roll balls in almond
flavoring, powered sugar and coconut flakes.
Refrigerate until served.
Holiday Party Pleasers
1/2 Lb. Claxton Fruit Cake
Box Yellow Cake Mix
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup Oil
1/2 Teaspoon Rum Flavoring
Mix cake mix, eggs, oil and rum flavoring until smooth. Stir in fruit cake pieces. Form
balls and place on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for twelve minutes. Decorate
with cherries or nuts. A cream cheese icing can also be added. Cream cheese icing
is made from eight ounces of cream cheese, one stick of butter, one box of powered
sugar and one tablespoon of vanilla or rum flavoring. Cream until smooth and spread
onto cooled cookies.
Chocolate-Covered Claxton Fruit Cake
(Makes 30 to 40 Strips)
1 Lb. Claxton Fruit Cake
12 oz. block of Milk Chocolate or White Chocolate for dipping
Chopped Nuts (if desired)
Chill fruit cake thoroughly. Slice and cut into small strips. It is a
good idea to slice the fruit cake before melting chocolate. Melt
chocolate in microwave according to directions. Carefully
slices into chocolate and place on wax paper. (Cover
with chopped nuts if desired). Strips can be frozen for
extended keeping.
