Cormac Lynn as the new
Principal of Shrine Catholic
High School and Academy.
I want to express my
profound gratitude to the
members of the search committee who
assisted in the selection process.
Shrine Catholic High School and
Academy Announce New Principal
(Royal Oak) -- Monsignor William Easton,
Pastor of National Shrine of the Little Flower
Parish and President of Shrine Catholic Schools,
announced today the appointment of Mr.
Cormac Lynn as the new Principal of Shrine
Catholic High School and Academy, located
in Royal Oak, Michigan. He will succeed Mrs.
Gabrielle Erken, whose retirement after 12
years of dedicated service was announced in
February.
Msgr. Easton said “We are extremely
pleased that Cormac will be joining us at
Shrine. He comes to us with an outstanding
reputation as a teacher, coach, and
administrator at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
Preparatory, where he has served since 2002,
most recently as Vice Headmaster and
Academic Dean. He brings the skills necessary
to ensure that Shrine Catholic High School and
Academy remains one of the preeminent
parish-based educational institutions in the
Diocese.”
Cormac’s academic credentials include a
BA in History from The Ohio State University and
a MA in History, Secondary School Teaching,
from Michigan State University. He earned his
teaching certificate from Madonna University,
and will complete an Education Specialist degree at
Oakland University in June.
In addition to his responsibilities at St. Mary’s, Cormac has
taught at Oakland Community College and currently is an
Adjunct Assistant Professor at Madonna University, where he
teaches in the College of Education as well as the College
of Social Sciences.

Benefit Performance for Welcome Inn
South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless (SOCH), operators of the
day center for the homeless, the Welcome Inn, are pleased to
announce a benefit performance of Monty Python's "Spamalot. The
musical will be performed by St. Dunstan's Theater Guild of Cranbrook
on Wednesday, May 29, 8:30 pm, at Cranbrook's outdoor Greek
Amphitheater, 400 Lone Pine Road, Bloomfield Hills. A pre-glow tea reception will
be held at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 and are available from Norma Regenold. Call

Mother and Unborn Baby Care Annual Fund-Raiser Dinner Invitation
The parish has made a donation to sponsor a table of 10 guests for the special
dinner and presentation entitled “Defending Life in a Post-Christian
World” on Thursday, May 30, 2013. This event is at Farmington Hills
Manor, 23666 Orchard Lake Rd, Farmington, MI 48336 with dinner at

Life Matters
“When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are
you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He
answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that
the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive
power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth” (Acts 1:1). Like the apostles, we too, are
commissioned by Christ to be a witness to the world, to be his ears,
eyes, feet and VOICE in the world; to witness His love for all human
life no matter the world’s perception of their worth. Reflect on St.
Teresa of Avila’s (1515–1582) poem “Christ Has No Body” and think
about how Christ is calling you to be his body here on earth.

specially designed just for preschoolers! Pip’s Preschool
Palace runs June 24 – 28 from 9 am to Noon at Shrine
Catholic Grade School.
Pip’s Preschool Palace is a wonderful way to help your
little one learn that for God, all things are possible. Our small
size crews, led by nurturing, responsible crew leaders, ensure
individual attention for each child.
Each day includes songs, crafts, Bible adventures,
games, snacks, playtime, and a Chadder movie.

Honoring our Veterans at Oakview Cemetery
Saturday, May 18, and 25, 9 am to 11 am
Help the Royal Oak Memorial Society show respect to
former veterans by cleaning up their gravesites and
decorating with flags. Parent and student teams are
needed on Saturday, May 4 and 11 for clean up.
Volunteers should bring rakes, shovels, and gardening
tools with them. On Saturday, May 25, students and
parents will be placing flags at the headstones of

Volunteers are needed to help the Dads’ Club with the
upcoming Pancake breakfast. There will be two shifts of
workers available, either 7-9 am or 9-11 am. Responsibilities
include: setting up/taking down tables and chairs, rolling
silverware, carrying trays for patrons, wiping tables,

Angels’ Place Resident Homes
Are you looking for a way to fit service hours into your
busy Summer schedule? Choose a convenient time for your
family and help Angels’ Place in a meaningful way. Angels’
Place has several resident homes for adults with
developmental disabilities in the Royal Oak area. Many of
these homes need assistance in gardening and yard
maintenance (weeding, trimming, planting flowers, etc.)
This project could qualify as a Long Term Ministry if volunteers
are interested in working regularly over the summer (talk to

Grade School Happenings
Fifth Grade
We are very proud of fifth grader Matthew Bolton, who placed second in the State of Michigan for the
Michigan AILA’s writing contest on the topic “Why I Am Glad America is a Nation of Immigrants”.
As the year draws to a close, the fifth graders will be finishing up their study of fractions and ending with
geometry. So far the students have a strong understanding of how to relate a fraction to a decimal, how to
make equivalent decimals, how to put fractions into simplest form, and how to change a mixed number into
an improper fraction. This knowledge will put them into a good position for adding, subtracting, multiplying,
and dividing fractions.
In science, we will be finishing up forces and motion and ending the school year with a unit on energy. To
end the year with a hoot and a holler, the fifth graders will be putting on a vocabulary parade for the entire
school on June 5. Each student will be given a vocabulary word from this year’s science or math studies and
will be decorating a top hat with the word’s meaning.
The fifth graders have been working very hard on their poetry. Students learned about several different
types, practiced how to make them, and are now creating beautiful final copies. We have also been
studying different types of figurative language so we can incorporate them into our poems.
The students are finishing our study of the Revolutionary War and are beginning the westward movement
and the concept of manifest destiny which shaped the growth of our country. We mapped battles of the war
and analyzed advantages and disadvantages of both sides.
In religion, we learned about Divine Mercy and Sister Faustina’s vision of Jesus. We made a poster with a
math problem: MISERY + HOPE = MERCY and prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Now we are reviewing the
Mysteries of the Rosary and praying our rosaries. We also accessed various sites on our SmartBoard to learn
several Marian hymns.
Declamations have been our focus in reading. The students chose a piece such as a poem or song lyrics,
memorized it, and performed in front of their classmates. Fifteen semi-finalists were chosen to compete
against one another for a chance to be a part of the final competition. The top eight students will now go on
to the final competition which will be held on Friday, May10. We are so proud of each and every one of our
students!

Annual Boy Scout Flower Sale May 11 and 12
The National Shrine of the Little Flower Boy Scout Troop will be offering flowers for sale Mothers’ Day
weekend in the Shrine Catholic Grade School parking lot (Woodward-side). Throughout the year, our boys
volunteer to help out with a number of parish activities. For example, they help decorate the church for
Christmas and Easter, they provide curbside loading and unloading for the Moms-to-Moms sales, and they
maintain a clean parking lot during the Dream Cruise party. Please support scouting in our parish by
purchasing beautiful, sweet-smelling flowers from the parish troop on Mothers’ Day weekend. We thank you

CSA Minute—Project Rachel
A post-abortion healing training session will be held this Wednesday, May 15, for
those interested in extending God’s mercy through the Project Rachel ministry.
Project Rachel offers support and the compassion of Christ to all the victims of abortion — the mother, the
father, grandparents, brothers and sisters — who need help in dealing with the grief, anger, and sense of
responsibility for a great loss. Training will include an overview of post-abortion trauma, a personal witness of
the impact of abortion and the healing process, ministry healing resources and pastoral options, and a Q&A
with a post-abortion trained therapist and a priest.
Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help fund this important ministry, which is part of the Department
of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Schools. The training costs $15 and will be held from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at
Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

preaching must in its turn make the preacher grow in holiness, which is nourished by prayer and above all by
