The portal can be used with any device that has internet access. Higher Education study room The Higher Education study room provides access to PC workstations, internet access and printers. Learning Centre The Learning Centre is well-equipped with books, journals and newspapers, as well as electronic resources including computers, laptops and internet access. Study rooms are also available, which offer individual, group or silent study spaces, and resources can even be accessed at home using the college’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and the Learning Centre’s collection of online eBooks. You can also email the team for support, should you need it. 06 Space for reflection A quiet, comfortable room is available to all students for prayer or reflection. Car parking The Manvers Campus has ample FREE car parking spaces – but we do have a parking permit system. We have CCTV installed to help protect vehicles from theft and vandalism. However all vehicles are parked at the owners’ risk. Manvers diner The Manvers Diner is the perfect place to relax and catch up with friends at break and lunch times. There is a delicious range of hot and cold food and drinks on offer, with a variety of healthy options available. The Griffin Grill The Griffin Grill is the college’s brand new fully-commercial training restaurant located nearby at the Onyx Retail Park. The restaurant offers a high quality, contemporary dining experience, delivered by the next generation of culinary professionals. Aspirations Hair & Beauty Salon The college’s on-site hair and beauty Salon has been beautifully refurbished and is a commercial business providing treatments to paying customers. It is also used as a fantastic training facility for our students and hosts fully trained Hairdressers and Beauticians. Manvers Waterfront Boat Club The college has great links with the Boat Club, which is just 1.5 miles away. As a Public Services or Sport student you will use the excellent facilities as part of your course but all students will have access to events within the academic year. As a Student you can also benefit from discounted membership and access to a range of action-packed outdoor sports including canoeing, triathlons, windsurfing, fishing, running and open-water swimming. The Boat Club also has a fantastic, on-site café which is managed by Dearne Valley College students and staff, selling a variety of delicious food and refreshments. Fees are payable per year of the course. Information regarding either funding source is subject to change, so it’s important that you check www.dearne-coll.ac.uk for the latest information. For further information about Tuition Fee Loans eligibility, applications and repayments, visit the Student Loans Company website at www.slc.co.uk For students that aren’t able to access a tuition fee loan, we offer flexible payment options. 10 Financial Services Financial Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) s e c i v r e s It may be possible to receive financial support to cover any additional study related costs you incur because of a disability. If you have a sensory or physical disability, a medical condition, a mental health difficulty or a specific learning disability, such as Dyslexia or Dyspraxia you may qualify to apply for support. DSA is available to both new and existing students, full-time or part-time and has no age limit. If you qualify for Disabled Students’ Allowance you will need to have a DSA Needs Assessment to decide on the support you will need on your course. You can undergo an assessment with a provider at college at a cost of £300 (students to fund this cost) or alternatively you can seek a different provider. Instead of asking for grades, a university might express the offer as a number of points. This appointment is an opportunity for you to ask any questions that you may have about the course. You will also undertake a course interview, this is to ensure that you are suitable for the course and fully understand our expectations in regards to attendance, study and progress through the course. Depending on your previous qualifications, your English and Maths skills may be assessed to identify any additional support you may require to successfully complete the course. Offer If your Course Interview has a successful outcome, you will receive either an offer or a conditional offer for a place on the course at Dearne Valley College. A conditional offer may be subject to conditions such as exam results and references. Depending on the type of support you need, you may be invited to meet the college’s Disability Officer, who will work with you to ensure you have the correct support in place. 13 Access to Higher Education access to higher education The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. The courses are typically available on both a Full-Time and Part-Time basis, with multiple start dates throughout the year. They are suitable for those over 19 years of age and provide an alternative route for those who would like to study Higher Education but who left school without the qualifications required to meet a university’s entry criteria. You will learn subject-specific knowledge alongside valuable study skills. You may also wish to improve your English and Maths skills alongside an Access course too – this can be done at Dearne Valley College. The course explores the needs and experiences of children and investigates how education shapes their development. You will develop relevant and specialist knowledge including health and wellbeing, inclusive practice, safeguarding, and child development. You will also develop your theoretical and practical skills, which play a fundamental role within all Early Years professions. It is ideal for anyone currently working in a Salon that would like to study at a higher level to reflect their experience and also provides excellent progression for students that have undertaken a Level 3 qualification in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing that are looking to pursue a successful career in the industry. This HNC will improve candidates’ business knowledge as well as further enhancing their practical skills. As a result of this, students will be able to set up their own business or work in a salon management position.
