Tire Rack Street Survival®, a national non-profit teen driving program,
teaches teens skills that will help them stay alive behind the wheel.
Teenagers learn from knowledgeable enthusiast driving coaches how
their actions govern a car’s responses, what the limits of their vehicles
are and how to avoid accidents entirely.
Unlike traditional driver education programs based on classroom theory
and simple vehicle maneuvers, the Tire Rack Street Survival® program
improves driver competence through challenging, hands-on experiences
in real-world driving situations in a vehicle they know – their own.
Working with local members of the BMW Car Club of America, Sports Car
Club of America, Porsche Club of America and other like-minded enthusiast organizations, Tire Rack Street Survival® utilizes local, knowledgeable
volunteers to conduct a program that in 2013 will result in over 100 days
of instruction across the country.

Summer or All-Season Tires?
Summer tires are designed to provide traction
and performance on dry and wet roads through
spring, summer and fall, however they are not
intended to be used in winter’s cold snow or on
ice. Conversely, the all-season tread designs
and compounds that remain more flexible in cold
weather to provide year-round capability typically
sacrifice some dry and wet road performance to
provide light snow traction. Our customers who
drive in snow for much of the winter prefer driving
on dedicated winter/snow tires even if they

Our tire testing program allows our team to get behind the wheel to do what our customers can’t.
Our test drivers (sales and other product information specialists) compare up to 40 different tires
each year. This gives them more first hand tire experience in one testing season than most drivers will get in a lifetime. The best part of our testing program is that it allows our team to share
their experiences with you when you call or read the test reports on tirerack.com.
Our back-to-back test format allows our team to experience a group of products in a short period
of time under controlled conditions. To assure each tire gets a fair comparison we use identical
vehicles (except for the color), the same Real World Road Ride route and the same Performance
Test Track course. During each evaluation the only thing that changes are the tires we’re testing.

Segment 1 • The Slalom
A 5-cone slalom is used to evaluate each tire’s
steering response and transitional handling during
quick right-left-right maneuvers.

Segment 2 • S Curves
A series of flowing turns that increase in radius
confirm each tire’s contribution to steady-state
cornering balance, traction and stability.
■
Segment 3 • Threshold Braking
Applying the brakes

Testing System
Performance Test Track Drive
Our purpose-built test track provides test drivers with a safe environment to experience how
well tires behave at their limit when asked to avoid an accident on the road or during competition
on a track. The course has been designed to challenge the tire’s steering response, handling
characteristics and braking capabilities.
We time how long it takes to complete full laps, as well as selected track segments to quantify
the product’s contribution to the vehicle’s performance. And after running multiple laps, our test
drivers provide subjective feedback on each tire’s behavior at the limit.
While tires may
deliver similar dry
performance, wet
conditions are often
the tie breaker when
it comes to rating
overall performance.
Real World Road Ride
Our driving loop includes county roads, state highways and an expressway to
reveal each tire’s everyday handling, ride comfort and noise qualities, as well as
the tire’s influence on the vehicle’s fuel economy.
Vehicle conditions that could affect the experience are kept to a minimum with the
radio off, windows up and climate control fan on its lowest setting. This allows our
team to focus on each product without unnecessary distractions.

Driving Conditions
Where you live often influences which types of tires are most appropriate for you.
Drivers living in the South typically experience dry and wet roads, but seldom encounter
snow and ice. And drivers living in the North will experience months of freezing temperatures and the full range of Mother Nature’s fury.
So we test in warm, dry and wet conditions. A sprinkler system on our test track allows us
to test traction, handling and braking under consistent wet road conditions equivalent to a
typical Indiana rain shower. This combination of dry and wet road conditions does a good
job of challenging a tire’s three-season
capabilities (spring, summer and fall).
Testing Performance All-Season Run-Flat Tires
Tire Rack again expanded its testing program
to challenge tires with the driving conditions
they are likely to encounter. In 2012, tests in
snow and on ice for all-season and winter
tires that challenge their fourth-season
(winter) capabilities were added.
NOTE: Summer tires are not included in
our winter testing because they are not intended
to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.
Testing Ultra High Performance Summer Tires
While the original dry and wet test results will continue to be reported (for drivers who
don’t encounter snow and ice or use dedicated winter tires in these conditions), we will
be adding a winter addendum to more tires in the future as a tool for northern drivers who
need to know which all-season and winter tires best match their wintertime driving needs.

Road hazard damage occurs when a tire fails as a result of a puncture,
bruise or break incurred during the course of normal driving on a maintained road. Nails, glass and potholes are the most common examples

“How do I know IF
my vehicle has TPMS?”
Indirect systems use the vehicle’s antilock braking
system’s wheel speed sensors to compare the rotational
speed of one tire versus the others. If a tire is low on
pressure, it will roll at a different number of revolutions
per mile than the other three and alert the vehicle’s
onboard computer.
• Dash light warning symbol
Direct systems attach a pressure sensor/transmitter
to the vehicle’s wheel. An in-vehicle receiver warns
the driver if the pressure in any tire falls below a
predetermined level.

Brake Pad Rating System
Low Noise
Modern brake pads and caliper systems are engineered with several different features to reduce brake
squeal. Brake pads with higher scores in this
category have these features and perform with
little to no brake noise when installed properly.
Low Dust
While all brake pad friction material generates dust
as it stops a vehicle, some brake pads produce more
visible dust than others. Generally, a pad with higher
friction levels and operating temperature range will
produce higher dust levels. Pads that produce
lower amounts of dust will receive the highest
scores in this category.
WARNING: BRAKES ARE A SAFETY-CRITICAL PART OF A MOTOR VEHICLE
Brake components should be installed by a competent mechanic in a professional manner. Any incorrect installation
of brake components can cause a major safety problem or an accident. If you are not a competent, qualified mechanic
you should not attempt to install these products, but should take the vehicle to a vehicle dealer or competent automotive
mechanic for their installation. In some cases, servicing or replacing brake hardware at the time of rotor installation may also be required. Brake rotors are wear items and as such, should be inspected regularly and replaced
as necessary.
Street & Highway Use: Brake pads should typically be replaced when approximately 1/8" to 3/16" of friction material
remains on the steel backing plate. Brake rotors should be replaced before their thickness has reached the prescribed “Worn Rotor Minimum Thickness” limit (expressed in mm) engraved on the edge of the brake disc. Plain rotors may be turned on a brake lathe to remove scoring and to true the disc surfaces until this minimum thickness has
been reached. Drilled and slotted rotors may not be able to be turned and should be replaced if they become scored.
Track & Competition Use: Due to the extremes of heat and pressure encountered by brake systems used for track and
competition applications, all brake system components (pads, rotors, calipers, lines, hardware and fluid) must be compatible and should be inspected between sessions. Brake pads and rotors should be replaced before they reach the wear
limits described above.

2013 Tire Rack
One Lap of America
The 2013 Tire Rack One Lap of America will
be the 30th running of Brock Yates’ extreme
challenge for driving enthusiasts. Featuring
eight days of competition between many of
North America’s fastest street-legal cars, it
will challenge the teams’ endurance as they
compete in 20 timed competition events and
complete over 3,400 miles during 172 hours of skid pad, autocross,
drag strip, racetrack and highway transit! It’s an eight-day pentathlon
event for driving enthusiasts.
Tire Rack BMW CCA Club Racing
Series – 15 Years Strong
With 2013 the Tire Rack celebrates its 15th year as the title
sponsor of the BMW CCA Club Racing Series. Over 30 series
events held across the U.S. and Canada now involve more
than 800 licensed racers. For those that are new to track
competition there are a number of Club Racing Schools that
help provide the experience necessary to ensure a safe, fun
and competitive event for all interested novices.
Sanctioned by the BMW Car Club of America, this door-to-door
racing series takes place at the most challenging racetracks
across the country and is open to BMWs that have the proper
safety modifications for competition. By running under vintage
racing rules that discourage overly aggressive driving, the
club attempts to minimize the risk of vehicle damage normally
associated with door-to-door racing.

Registration begins at Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana on Friday, May 3rd. Competition starts
the following morning at 8:00 a.m. when Tire Rack will host One Lap of America competitors
to a Wet Skid Pad Challenge. Finishing positions in the Wet Skid Pad Challenge are awarded by
measuring and averaging the maximum cornering forces each vehicle generates driving laps
in both directions on the test track’s 200' diameter wet skid pad.
Competitors will then begin their weeklong trek stopping off at many of America’s premier
racetracks for timed competition, including the Daytona International Speedway, Virginia
International Raceway and NOLA Motorsports Park.
They will return to Tire Rack for the final competitive event on Saturday, May 11th from 9:00 a.m.
until noon for a Dry Skid Pad Challenge (with Mother Nature’s cooperation), followed by the now
famous victory tire burnout celebration.
Spectators are welcome to visit Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana to see the cars during their final
preparation and to watch the skid pad events. Admission and parking are free.
