She also believed in the work of the United Nations and their message of peace around the world. It is for these reasons that every year we celebrate United Nations Day! United Nations Day is officially Saturday, October 24th. This year our theme is “Human Rights.” Our students have been learning during their music class as well as their history class the concept of human rights and the importance of understanding that human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place 1 2734 North Coria, Brownsville, Texas OCTOBER, 2015 of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. The HSA held its first meeting on Thursday, September 10th. We had approximately 15 parents. We hope to grow in numbers. Every year we celebrate this day by singing and dancing songs to express what the UN stands for. Our show will begin at 10:00 am. Doors will open at 9:30 am. We ask all parents to please leave the bottom bleacher empty for our elderly that may have a difficult time climbing. This day is designated as a half day. Parents may take their children home after the show. We were able to establish four committees: Our jr. high students will be making a brief presentation before the show begins. These students are delegates to the Montessori Model United Nations Conference held in New York. We are so proud of these ladies and gentleman already making a positive difference through awareness and education. 1) Health and Fitness Chair: Marinda van Dalen Co Chair: Zenia Villarreal 2) Parent Volunteer Chair: Tally Caplan Co Chair: Cynthia Ramirez 3) Program Awareness Chair: Don and Enedelia Mayer 4) Executive Committee Members of the executive board: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer Our celebration continues in the evening at the International Food Festival from 5-7 pm. The MicroSociety program acknowledges that students learn best when they connect schoolwork with the outside world. MicroSociety promotes student voice and choice, enabling students to learn by doing and providing real world experiences. Students learn the power of a dollar by creating and managing their own businesses/ventures. Kenmontville is our MicroSociety city at Kenmont. Our student council acts as the mayor and city officials. Kenmont started implementing MicroSociety in 2007 with the 4th-6th grade classrooms. It has since expanded to 1st grade students. The 1st and 2nd grade students do not attend meetings, however, they take turns selling and shopping at Kenmontville MicroSociety. About 6 years ago we implemented a parent component to increase parental involvement. The parent volunteers act as Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the different businesses/ventures. Ventures include: bank, school, yearbook, newspaper, post office, restaurant, toy store, television station, manufacturing plant, salon, performing arts, playground, science museum, bookstore, and radio station. Students in grades 3rd-6th attend MicroSociety one morning every week on Wednesdays. Our first MicroSociety day is October 28th from 8:30-10:00. We are looking for parent volunteers to assist us with MicroSociety. The commitment is for the entire school year. The program runs for 18 weeks. If you are interested in becoming a "CEO" for any of the businesses/ ventures listed above, there will be an organizational meeting on Tuesday, October 20th at 10:00 am in room 14. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Saenz at [email protected]. You may also call or come by! 4
