family - owned farms.
Brownsville's synagogue, Temple Adas Israel, was
built in 1882 and is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. The building is believed to be the
oldest synagogue in Tennessee, and is a rare example
of a synagogue built in the Gothic Revival style.

over the years, including National
Public Radio. His artwork has been
exhibited at the National Ornamental
Metal Museum in Memphis, TN as
well as the Dixie Carter Performing
Arts Center (photographic representation),
and is documented by the Smithsonian
Institution.

The creation and life’s work of Brownsville artist Billy
Tripp. The structure was begun in 1989 and will
continue to evolve until Tripp's death, at which point
it will become the site of his interment.
Included in the network of steel are individual pieces
representing various events and periods of Tripp's life,
especially the death of his father, Rev. Charles Tripp, in
2002. One of the latest additions, a water tower
salvaged from a defunct factory in Western Kentucky,
was dismantled, transported to Brownsville, and
reconstructed single-handedly by the artist.

At first glance it looks like an old abandon electrical
transformer station that's been decorated by bunch of
colorful junk. But at closer look you start noticing
beautiful and elaborate elements that make the
'Mindfield memorial'.

There are all steel typographic phrases, icons and
symbols, all crafted and suspended in the metallic
massive sculpture. Weirdly enough the structure seems
well engineered and safe. You can actually sneak in,
and walk along tall metal pillars and not fear that you'll
be crushed and killed by a falling metal debris.
A vast, brain-boggling network of towering steel
girders, which the artist claims tells the story of his life
(spent since 1989 building the Mindfield).
Take the time to look for the details, as there are many.
You won't see them if you just glance at this very large
piece of artwork -- one man's ingenuity and imagination.

During the yellow fever epidemic of 1878, there was a lack of time and able-bodied men to dig individual graves
for the many victims, so they were laid to rest in a mass grave here. A marker inside the 1827 cemetery notes the
location among the beautiful oaks.
Of the 844 reported cases, it is known that there were more than 200 deaths.

The roots of cotton in West Tennessee are traced from
1826 to the present, showing the impact cotton has had
on the lives of the people in this region.
Featured are old plows, fertilizers and planters pulled
by mules and horses during the early days of cotton; a
bale of cotton bound the old way and a new compact
modern bale, an old roller gin; and cotton baskets,
sacks and scales from when cotton was picked by hand
... just a few of the things you will see and learn about.
White Oak Basket Collection is from the collection of
the late Newman Walpole.

The last "wild" river and its eco system are highlighted and include 3 fresh water aquariums.
The Hatchie River is important because it is the longest free-flowing tributary of the lower
Mississippi, and contains the largest forested floodplain in Tennessee.

snapping turtle (see a replica of one in the museum), which can grow up to 240 pounds.

Felsenthal Lincoln Collection

The collection was a two-generation project of the late Morton Felsenthal and his
father, which was left to the citizens of Haywood County in 1982 at Felsenthal’s
death.
A portion of the Felsenthal Lincoln Collection is on display at the Center. The
collection is considered to be one of the largest privately owned collections in the
Southeast and includes over 800 pieces of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia and related
artifacts.
More of the collection can be seen at College Hill Center in Brownsville.

The life-size Element Man is made from heating elements manufactured at the Brownsville plant.
The legs are flanged immersion heaters and the upper body is made mostly of oven elements.
The waist and hips are hot tub heaters.
The banjo is made from refractory disk and strip heaters. These elements also make up the
sculpture's eyes. These heaters are used in different appliances from floor heaters to vacuum
chambers like the ones on the space shuttle. Locally, the same types of heaters are used by Tripp
Country Ham to slow-cure their hams.

Sleepy John Estes Home
John Estes was one of the great blues pioneers. He was a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter with a very highpitched "crying" vocal style — Crying the Blues. He earned his nickname "Sleepy" from his habit of falling asleep
during performances. He was performing professionally by age 19.
Sleepy John, along with fellow Brownsville Bluesmen Yank Rachel and Hammie Nixon are also featured in the
Music Museum.
John Estes, from Ripley, he lost sight in his right eye after a friend threw a rock at him during a baseball game.
In the beginning of the Great Depression, Estes was playing on a corner in Memphis when a record label scout
heard the sound and quickly recorded Estes at the Peabody Hotel. Estes made his way to Chicago and recorded
more songs with Charlie Pickett, Son Bonds, and Lee Brown.

This once one-room schoolhouse attended by a
young Anna Mae Bullock (aka Tina Turner) is
now home to a collection of the Queen of Rock's
personal memorabilia including costumes and
gold records. Even her high school yearbook is
included among the treasures.
