Volume 1. Issue 2 GPA Scoop GREA T PAT H A CADEM Y March-June Edition Summer Time The students of the Art History class, offered at Great Path Academy, have created a mural revolving around Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move! Program. Our vision was to create a social statement, inspired by the artwork of Diego Rivera, and President Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration about the scarcity and unavailability of healthy food in our communities. Today more than 23 million people (6.5 million children) live in low-income neighborhoods more than a mile away from a supermarket. Lack of access to fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains has contributed to the significant problem of obesity. We hope that the mural will make people realize how important healthy nutrition is, resulting in changing their eating habits, not only for themselves, but also for their families. realize how important healthy nutrition is, resulting in changing their eating habits, not only for themselves, but also for their families. We hope you enjoy viewing our mural created completely from fabric and our vision of planting community gardens in the city. A colorful vision of our community, “Full Circle” calls us to action to change the way we grow, get, and eat our food. “Full Circle” is our response to raising the awareness of creating healthy food choices in all of our communities. —Artist Statement GPA Birthdays March Jonisha Lindsey - 1 Tyler Snow - 1 Ebony Campbell - 3 Lauren Peoples - 6 Nicole Anderson - 12 Breanna Filigrana - 14 Janise Martin - 14 Kiandra Soto - 14 Iliana Labo y - 15 Lillie Gunn - 16 April Carlton Randolph - 1 Madeleine Haynes - 2 Samantha Sidor - 5 Rachel Ambrose - 8 Jaime Grennan - 8 Megan Filigrana - 9 Viktoreya Thompson - 12 Muhammed Niang - 13 Jasmine Cruz - 18 By Ashley Williams | Graphics courtesy of Google Images Ashlee Machado - 16 Cassandra Martinez - 16 Aurmani Campos - 17 Treonna Hawley - 17 Hannah Polinski - 17 Anthony Gonzalez - 18 Craig Richards - 18 Kwasi Annoh - 19 Aaronda Hill - 22 Nancy Lys –22 John Kaminski - 24 Nafatari Campbell - 27 Alaysia Zaikarite - 18 Kimberley Green - 21 Angel Vicente - 21 Selena Coley - 22 Donte Minto - 24 Joshua Lopez - 25 George Torres - 25 Ryan Brumant - 27 Shane Flynn - 27 Dymonic Tann - 27 G PA S CO OP GPA Birthdays May Briana Tinsley - 4 Jawan Walker - 4 Richard Hamilton - 8 Jejuan Montgomery - 9 Joshua Paquin - 9 Tayshia Stapleton - 10 Chevonise Taylor - 10 Amber Birch - 11 Jahnae Gordon - 12 Taylor Thompson - 14 June Kassandra Agosto - 2 Nicole Christmas - 2 Christopher Gutierrez - 6 Amanda Wiafe - 11 Obdulio Santiago - 13 Ashley Padilla - 15 Veniamin Kulish - 21 Emmanuel Ijomah - 15 Samad Ahmad - 16 Taysha Thompson - 18 Sydney Brockman - 19 Jahira Phillips Williams - 21 Donovan Delaire - 23 Sarah Poutre - 23 Christina Foley - 25 Derrick Holloway - 27 O’Neil Smith - 28 Amanda Bednarz - 30 Patrick O’neal - 22 Micaela Logan - 23 Kay-Kaniele Reid - 24 Shane Starks - 26 Ashley Williams - 26 Hannah Farris - 28 Maria Ibarra - 28 Michelle Rivera - 29 Malik Dyer - 22 De’Jon Gutzmer - 22 V O LU ME 1 . Not only does he have time to complete all assignments and stay focused in class but he also is completely dedicated to his position as mid-fielder on his soccer team. He also spends his free time helping his mom by babysitting his siblings. His future goals will include his love for Health & Fitness. He hopes to attend Cambridge University and his dream is to become a pro soccer player. He finds his inspiration within his family but also within the student body. He claims to look up most to Abraham Lincoln because he was a self taught man who when faced with trials still managed to do the right thing. Well, Owusu we think you two will always do the right thing! By S elena Coley | Graphics: Selena Coley Lauren Peoples is a very busy sophomore! Not only does she spend her time trying hard to pass all her classes but she also knits, crochet, sow, bake, dance and find time to play the piano! GPA we are in the midst of a natural talent. How does she do it? Well, she has found a way to balance all that is important to her around each other. She has a real knack for time management. She hopes to one day attend Harvard University and major in Law or Art. She also hopes to either become a lawyer or an Art teacher. We think she’ll be successful no matter what she chooses. She thanks her parents for supporting her and looks up to them the most because of their strength and discipline. Well I think people should look up to Lauren too! G PA S CO OP DIAMONDS Christopher Gutierrez loves anything to do with sports. His main love being for swimming, he also finds time to play soccer. He enjoys the subjects History and Math and is very dedicated to his studies at GPA. He puts school over everything and understands that hard work does pay off! Although he is undecided on what he would like to pursue as a career, he knows he wants to make his decision at UCONN. He believes in the American Dream, and claims that if you go and do the best you can there is no way you can fail. This should be a true inspiration to us all. Jamie Paul is a well-rounded senior. She is continually proving to others how hard work pays off. Not only does she balance her interests in track with her school work but she also works to earn some independence. She believes she is a very focused individual, and we believe it too! She was accepted to Wingate University and will be attending this fall. She plans to Major in either Pharmacy or Sports Therapy. She believes in living in the moment and taking life for what it is. This seems to be working for her and the GPA family is proud! V O LU ME 1 . V O LU ME 1 . I S S UE 2 Page 11 Senior Three years ago, I walked into this building as a sophomore, nervous and unsure of what was coming. I can say three years later its been a journey filled with both high and lows. These three years have molded me into the person I am today. In my final goodbye to you all today, I would advise you to take every opportunity that you can and approach every challenge as a way to grow. - Kaylea Elliott They say it’s the best four years of your life, and I wouldn't completely disagree. It’s a such a bitter sweet feeling, leaving everything I know to finally test my independence on everything I've been taught. I've switched schools, made life long friends, wrote speeches, failed and passed tests, taken college courses, stayed up all night to procrastinate homework assignments, had internships, done community service and was a competitive cheerleader. The most amazing part about high school is that none of this exactly matters anymore. All that matters is who you are, how By: GPA S eniors . Graphics: Google Images much you have accomplished, how far you’ve come and the memories that you will inevitably take to the next four years of your life as you patiently wait to create even more. To all the hard work, all the teachers who made life more complicated and even the few that made it slightly enjoyable. To the football games, open houses, uniforms, SAT’s , and most importantly, to the amazing class of 2013 who made this ride slightly more enjoyable. Thank you and Goodbye. Here’s to the next four years. - Kiara Thomas G PA S CO OP Goodbyes Graduating and leaving high school is the most bitter sweet feeling. I cant wait to leave and start a new chapter of my life, but I’ll always remember the last three years at Great Path Academy. From Mr.Meyer’s speech that Briana did not do, to Miss Usher’s speeches that we all knew meant do or not graduate, which we all wanted to do at the last minute anyway. I cant imagine spending my high school career with a more stubborn, hard headed, crazy, wild, insane, amazing, wonderful, and perfect group of people. I am so excited to be leaving, but I couldn't have asked for a better senior class to spend it with. - Jamie Paul Great Path Academy has been my second home for three years now and I cannot imagine how hard its going to be to leave this home away from home after graduation! The moments I will always hold with me include : sophomore orientation, cool schools, studentteacher basketball games, six flags field trips, Lake Compounce and every class meeting! Other fond memories include Mr.Meyer’s class in sophomore year, Dr.Zotos’ Honors American Lit class, Mr. Luciano’s Spanish class and Miss Ushers B-day, first block public V O LU ME 1 . I S S UE 2 speaking class. I could go on about fond moments involving this school, but that would take up too much space. As a senior class we have been through a lot of changes in the last three years; but I don't think we would have rather been anywhere else during our high school years ! Good work, good luck and congratulations to the class of 2013 !! -Theresa Marie BuckleyMurawski Page 13 ASK BELLA Dear Bella, My best friend has been job hunting for really long time and she finally got a job. She has been working now for about four months and I can already see it having negative effects. Her grades are going form A’s to D’s, she’s sleeping in her classes and getting to school really late. All she talks about now is getting more money and buying new clothes and bags. I don't want to seem like a jealous friend but it is getting really annoy- ing. I wish we could sit and help each other study and go to the movies like we did before, now she’s just does online shopping. I want my best friend back. I want her to see that excelling in school is way more rewarding than working at a fast food restaurant. How can I get her to understand what I am saying without sounding like a hater ? - Concerned Friend Dear Concerned Friend, I can definitely understand why you think this way and your not being a hater trust me. You should invite her out to the movies or the mall one day and just have a awesome time like normal best friends would. When the timing is right, sit and talk to her about what's bothering you. Explain to her how working is affecting her and ask her if she misses having moments like this. Let her know that your afraid of her ending on the wrong path because of all the load from school and work. If she is truly your best friend she should understand what your saying and not get mad at you. If it ends on a bad note, at least you can say you tried. Dear Bella, You can say I’m not like most girls, for one thing I don’t tend to keep female friends. Most would say I’m a tomboy, my best friend and I do the typical fun stuff like skateboarding, playing ball, and going to the movies. He even pays for me too! Some say we act like a couple but our friendship is just really strong….well that’s the way he sees it. I recently started to develop deeper feelings but I don’t know how to go about it. I rather not lose our friendship or make things weird but it’s getting harder everyday. When I see him in the hallway with all these girls, I can’t help but get jealous even though he can’t tell. Should I let my feelings show or should I let this one go? -Friend Zoner G PA S CO OP By Bella xoxo | Graphics: Google Images ASK BELLA Dear Friend Zoner, You have two options when it comes to your best friend and they both may end in heartbreak. Option A: No one deserves to get their feelings hurt so in order to protect them, you have to do your research first. Find out if this boy likes you. Give him the test. His reaction to this test should tell you how much he cares about you. Option B : Simply open up to him about your feelings. Let him know exactly how your feeling. It’s the second best thing to do. Dear Bella, he has a girlfriend and she has no problem letting everyone know that he’s hers on InSo there's this boy!! I’ve known him stagram. Honestly I think I'm secretly in for almost 5 years now, we basically grew up love with him. I just know she's not the right together. I remember spending most of my one for him. His friends’ that go to my school summer days and nights with him at my are always teasing me about our past relamom’s house and it was so much fun. Over tionship. Its hard for me to believe that I’m time we started to gain feelings for each still in love with him. Everyday I think about other but we would always hide it. I would always make jokes about how ugly he was and those nights we had at my mom’s house. Its scaring me! How do I let him know that I'm he would make jokes about me too. Due to in love with him. family issues our relationship started to fade away. He didn't care so I didn't care. - I’m Secretly in Love It was that simple. I recently found out that Dear I'm Secretly in Love, This sounds like a very sticky situation. The best thing for you to do is to sit and have a talk with him. There’s no way going around it. If your friendship with him was a strong as you said it was he should totally understand why you feel this way. Maybe he has the same feelings too. If it doesn't work out at least you know you tried.
