For the third straight year, Kvitova and Radwanska will meet in their first WTA Finals match

Kvitova is one of three players to win the WTA Finals title in their debut. In the previous 43 editions of the WTA
Finals, only three times has a tournament debutante gone all the way to the title, and they're all here – S.Williams
(2001), Sharapova (2004) and Kvitova (2011)

Kvitova is one of three women from the Czech Republic to lift the trophy at the WTA Finals along with Martina
Navratilova (1978, 1979) and Jana Novotna (1997). [Note: Navratilova also won the title 6 times representing
USA]

Kvitova won second Grand Slam title at 2014 Wimbledon (d. Bouchard in F); d. Sharapova in 2011 Wimbledon
final; became first (and thus far only) player born in 1990s to win a Grand Slam title

Kvitova notched her first (and only) Top 10 win of the 2014 season by defeated Bouchard in final at Wuhan

This is the 44th staging of the event (began in 1972). This year marks the first year that Singapore will be hosting the
Finals after being staged in Istanbul, Turkey from 2011-13. Singapore is the ninth different city to host the year-end
event

This year marks the first time the event is hosted in the Asia-Pacific region. Singapore will host the year-end event for
the next five years (2014-18)

The singles event features 8 players and begins as a round robin event, with 4 players in the Red Pool and 4 in the
White Pool. Over the first 5 days of competition, each player meets the other 3 players in her group, with the top 2 in
each pool moving on to the semifinals. Each of the group winners meets the runner-up in the other group in the
semifinals. The winners of each semifinal meet in the championship match

The current round robin format was re-introduced in 2003 for the first time since 1982

The doubles event at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals features 8 teams in a single elimination draw - Sara Errani
(ITA)/Roberta Vinci (ITA), Hsieh Su-Wei (TPE)/Peng Shuai (CHN), Cara Black (ZIM)/Sania Mirza (IND), Ekaterina
Makarova (RUS)/Elena Vesnina (RUS), Raquel Kops-Jones (USA)/Abigail Spears (USA), Kveta Peschke
(CZE)/Katarina Srebotnik (SLO), Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP)/Carla Suárez Navarro (ESP) and Alla Kudryavtseva
(RUS)/Anastasia Rodionova (AUS).

This year’s 10-day event also includes a WTA Legends Classic featuring Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Marion
Bartoli and Iva Majoli, a WTA Rising Stars Invitational featuring Monica Puig (PUR), Shelby Rogers (USA), Zarina
Diyas (KAZ) and Zheng Saisai (CHN) – and a Future Stars event – featuring U16 and U14 players from 12 Asian-Pacific
countries.

For the third consecutive year (and third time in Finals history) each player competing in the singles competition
represents a different country: CAN, CZE, DEN, POL, ROU, RUS, SRB, USA

Seven (7) players have advanced to the final on their WTA Finals debut; only Serena Williams (2001), Maria
Sharapova (2004) and Petra Kvitova (2011) won the title on their debut; Those who reached the final on their
debut are: Tracy Austin (1979 R-Up), Andrea Jaeger (1981 R-Up), Lindsay Davenport (1994 R-Up) and Martina
Hingis (1996 R-Up)

The longest Finals win streak was compiled by Martina Navratilova, who won 21 straight matches in winning 5
titles between 1983 and 1986 and reaching the quarterfinals in 1987; S.Williams enters the 2014 Finals with a
15-match win streak at the event (Won title in 2009, 2012 and 2013). The next-longest win streaks in tournament
history went to Chris Evert and Monica Seles, who each won 12 matches in a row.

Between 1984 and 1998, a best-of-five sets final was used to decide the Finals final; three finals went the
distance: 1990 - Seles vs. Gabriela Sabatini (the first woman’s match in 89 years to extend to five sets since the
1901 Philadelphia Finals); 1995 – Steffi Graf vs. Anke Huber; 1996 - Graf vs. Hingis. Six finals went to four sets
(1986 - March, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1998)

Nine (9) times a Finals winner has not dropped a set en route to the title; Evert achieved the feat three times
(1972, 73, 75) and Navratilova (1984, 85) and S.Williams (2001, 2012) did it twice; Sabatini did not drop a set in
1988, while Kim Clijsters did the same in 2002

There have been 18 different winners in 43 stagings; of those 18 winners, 14 have been former world No.1’s, only
exceptions were Sylvia Hanika (1982), Sabatini (1988, 1994), Jana Novotna (1997) and Kvitova (2011)

The top seed has won the title 21 times. In 2013, S.Williams became the first to do so since 2007 (Justine Henin).


ABOUT ROUND ROBIN FORMAT
In 2003 the current round robin format feeding into a four-player single-elimination draw returned to the WTA Finals for
the first time since 1982. The Top 2 finishers in each group will advance to the semifinals where the top player in each

ROUND ROBIN TIE-BREAKING METHODS
Since 2003 when Finals began its current format, a semifinalist has been decided by the tie-break method 5 times (2003,
2004, 2009, 2011, 2013). The final standings of each group shall be determined by the following:
1) Greatest number of wins
2) Greatest number of matches played; or
3) Head-to-head results if only two (2) players are tied, or if three (3) players are tied then:
a. If three (3) players each have the same number of wins, a player having played less than all three (3)
matches is automatically eliminated and the player advancing to the single elimination
competition is the winner of the match-up of the two remaining tied players; or
b. Highest percentage of sets won; or
c. Highest percentage of games won
If the above tie-breaking methods produce one (1) superior player (1st place) or one inferior player (3rd place),
and the two (2) remaining players are tied, the tie between those two (2) players shall be broken by head-tohead record.
The 2014 year-end No.1 ranking will be on the line in Singapore and will be decided between Serena Williams and
current WTA World No.2 Maria Sharapova. S.Williams has finished as year-end No.1 three times (2002, 2009, 2013), while
Sharapova is trying to accomplish that feat for the first time in her career.
 To have a chance Sharapova needs to at least reach SF with 2-1 RR record

Serena Williams is attempting to clinch the year-end No.1 ranking for the fourth time in her career (also in 2002, 2009
and 2013). She would become the fifth player to finish the season as the WTA’s year-end No.1 four or more times in her
career, joining Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Lindsay Davenport. Williams most recently returned to the
WTA World No.1 ranking on Monday, February 18, 2013, becoming the oldest woman to hold the top spot since the
computer rankings were introduced in November 1975. The American, who celebrated her 33rd birthday on September
26th, returned to No.1 for the sixth time in her career - nearly 11 years after she first claimed the mantle in July 2002.
Maria Sharapova, despite holding the No.1 ranking for 21 weeks, has yet to finish as the year-end No.1. In a season that
saw the Russian come back from a shoulder injury that sidelined her from last year’s WTA Finals to win her fifth Grand
Slam title, to earn the year-end No.1 ranking would be icing on top of a fantastic year.

CANADA: Bouchard is the third Canadian to compete in the Finals’ 44-year history and first since 1989 (Carling
Basset, 1984-85; Helen Kelesi, 1988-89).

CZECH REPUBLIC: In 2011, Kvitova became the first player from the Czech Republic to compete in singles at
the Finals since 1998 (Jana Novotna); she was the 3rd player from Czech Republic to win the title at Finals along
with Martina Navratilova (1978, 1979) and Novotna (1997)

DENMARK: Wozniacki became the first Danish player to participate in the Finals in 2009. She was the first
alternate at the WTA Finals last year, but did not play.

POLAND: Radwanska is the only Polish player to compete at Finals. She has played in six of the last seven finals,
including twice as an alternate (2008, 2009).

ROMANIA: Halep is the third Romanian to compete at the WTA Finals, following in the footsteps of Virginia
Ruzici (1983-84) and Irina Spirlea (1996-98).

RUSSIA: At least one Russian has qualified for Finals for 17-straight years (since 1998), but in 2013, although
Sharapova qualified, she withdrew with a shoulder injury; 10 different Russians have competed in singles at the
year-end Finals; Dementieva (10) has made the most appearances, followed by Sharapova, who is making her
7th appearance this year. Sharapova is the only Russia who has won the WTA Finals title

SERBIA: Ivanovic returns to the Finals for the first time since 2008. From 2007-10, Serbia was represented at the
