www.TheLandingsofSarasota.com is Launched
By Sarah Rhodes
The marketing aka public side of our website is launched and ready for your visit.
The original goals of Marketing The Landings
•
Raise awareness of the magnificence of The Landings,
•
Which increases demand for living in The Landings,
•
Which increases the value of homes in The Landings
We invite you to take a tour of the site, enjoy the pictures we have included (all taken
by residents) and use the interactive Google map in the neighborhood section to find
your favorite spots, read why some of your neighbors love living here and then share
your thoughts with us, [email protected].
One of the exciting facts about our site is the number of residents that contributed to
the content of the site. The site is only possible because as a team we worked together,
each contributing our strengths, to create a website that will be used as a prototype for
an Association Voice.
A big THANK YOU to the following residents:
Technology: George Michalopolous, Dick Bayles, & Truman Menefee
Photography: Jeff Crotty, Gary Warren, Ben Mayne, Rudy Blohm, Irwin Starr, &
Norris Carroll
Copy: Meg Maguire, Deb Doherty, Meredith McMurray, Tina von Kessel, Karl
Maggard, Ann Maggard, Kevin Lechlitner, & Joe Venezia
We all LOVE our community and the website is a tool to help us share the beauty of our
community. How can you help make sure that our site rises to the top of a Google search?

The Resident side of the site is currently under construction and should be complete
late summer/early fall. We are exploring the option of releasing portions of the site
as they are developed, stay tuned! This portion of the site is secure and will only be
accessible by those residents of The Landings. Each resident will have to request a log
in and create a password for this secure portion of the site; look for an email or notices
that this portion is open
The Resident side of the website content will be driven by the residents and their
use of the site. There will be discussion boards set up with a variety of topics with
additional topics to be added by those that use the site. The “For Sale”, “Wanted”
and “Neighbor to Neighbor” will be great areas for cleaning up and out and sharing
those items that no longer fit your lifestyle. If you have suggestions email them to

Parting thoughts….
It’s been challenging, fun and occasionally frustrating
serving as the Eagle editor for eleven years, editor/
publisher ten of those. But, I came to Sarasota to enjoy
retirement and now willingly give up those monthly
deadlines to enjoy the remaining retirement years.
In moving to Sarasota the obvious choice for living was
The Landings. It offered a gorgeous community, central
to everything, especially Sarasota Memorial convenient
for caring for my ill and aging mother. Never regretted the
choice but did approach it with some trepidation! Like
many I’d read those horror stories of conflicts between
property owners and Association boards throughout
Florida: conflict about flag poles – even the mounting of
a US Flag, conflicts over landscaping and xeriscaping,
house colors etc.
I viewed the offer by the LMA to revive a community
newspaper as an opportunity for journalism like
that practiced in my days as a television broadcast
manager. That inspired the most important provision in
my agreement to start the paper. “There would be no
censorship or interference in the content of the paper.”
To the credit of 11 boards since, they have kept their word.
It is much more difficult to complain about an action
when the constituency has had an opportunity to comment
on it prior to enactment. Therefore, a priority goal of The
Landings Eagle was to convince boards not to vote on
actions prior to publication to insure time and opportunity
for community input or even editorial comment. For the
most part boards have complied.
Both these practices encourage “transparency.”
A third, required by law in Florida, is “Government
in the Sunshine,” requiring open meetings allowing
constituencies in any and all meeting except those when
pending litigation is being discussed AND the body’s
legal counsel is present. The Eagle has been diligent in
reminding boards of this, and the boards, in recent years,
have carefully complied. That has not always been the
case.
The very first association meeting this editor/reporter
attended a resident was being reprimanded for a largely
unforced covenant violation. (Which board can be left
unnamed) The “defendant” was told to leave during the
board’s deliberations. My objections to the demand under
the Sushine law were challenged. They argued they could
enter “executive session.” I disagreed. No further action
or deliberation was undertaken. Several meetings later
a board officer took me aside to say “you were correct.”
©
The payoff: no need to challenge a Sunshine violation
since. The members of that board are no longer active.
Watchdogging transparency in government has been
a priority, a role of the fourth estate.
We’re also pleased to have contributed to the
reclamation of the Eagles Nest Area. Our first reports
revealed it is not legally a “preserve” allowing clean-up
and maintenance. Charlie Valentine’s piece “Walk on
the WIldside” depicted the terrible condition of the area
and the likelihood of further deterioration without serious
attention. Finally the opening of the area to all residents
with certain restrictions protecting adjacent residences.
The proposed changes in the intersection of the Trail,
Proctor and Kestral Park Way North were first proposed
in the pages of The Landings Eagle.
Lastly, there are many thanks to be offered. Dee
Ricapito and Len Glumly first proposed I restart the paper.
Dee joined the “oversight committee” of Nat Lehrman,
Fred Stahman, Saul Lapidus and the late Betty Ricketson.
Dee and Betty were especially helpful in the early days.
Dee continues as regular contributor to this day.
Contributors have included the prolific and eclectic
writings of Dr. AL Weeks, each president of the LMA,
the President, Managers and Pros who have served
the LRC over the years, Dick Bayles whose sense of
governmental transparency has been especially helpful
in keeping Landins fully informed, occasional consultants
Larry Spelman the late Bob Greenfield, Scott Diamond,
The Feltmans and their Landings Learning Group, Bill
Whitman and gate management Jamie Colon and Jordan
Joseph.
Barbara Pendrell has been a right hand in assisting
The Eagle as well as leading our proofreading crew, Tony
Anthony, Leslie McLean, Dorothy Lawrence and Lee
Morgenlander.
Thanks to my late partner Ms. Charlie Valentine whose
excellent sales skills got us off to a good economic start,
Peter O’Reilly and Rene Brooks who followed.
And of course thanks to the 500+ advertisers over the
course of 11 years whose support made a paper of 32+
pages possible each issue. The first advertiser is still in
the paper today, Judy Greene.
And finally, thanks to the faithful readers especially
those who took the time to write in and participate.
Good bye, at least for now. Journalists seldom wander
off quietly into the sunset.

pictures of our community’s
wildlife and our varied
residencies all taken by our
own residents. The Website committee will now turn its
attention to Part II of the site referred to as the Residents
Section. This section will be accessible by residents only. Much more to come! Thanks to all the many residents
who have participated in this achievement. Additional
information about the website can be found in another
article in this Eagle issue.
The annual LMA Board Workshop for board members
and Association Presidents included discussions about
changes in Condo and Homeowner Association rules
and regulations led by the board’s attorney Chad
McClenathen followed by a website update by Sara
Rhodes. The last two plus hours of the Workshop were
devoted to various committee achievement and their
current and future plans.
As we approach the summer months the LMA board
committees will be spending time completing this years
objectives and identifying what we need to devote our
time to in 2014 and beyond. If you have suggestions you
wish the board to address please send you comments to
the various committee heads. The names of all committee
Chairs are listed on the new website.
A reminder -- the next LMA Board meeting is on June
6. There will not be a board meeting in July. The August
board meeting will be on Thursday August 1.
Enjoy the summer months. Try to stay cool and active.
Letters to the Editor
Congratulations to Sarah Rhodes and her committee
for the successful launch of The Landings new web site:

site is one our community can be justifiably proud of and
is the culmination of a great deal of hard work. It is a
beautiful site and will be used and enjoyed by residents
and people interested in The Landings for years to come.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE June 2013
LMA Meeting Notes
After several years of planning and approvals
by the County and the Florida Department
of Transportation, revisions to the congested
intersection at the Tamiami Trail, Proctor road
and Kestral Parkway North remain stalled.
(It is) the LMA board’s understanding (that)
the Schostak Company (owners/managers of
the Landings Plaza) , Publix and Wells Fargo
have hired their own traffic engineering firm to
examine the proposal. The board awaits their
recommendations. Their primary concern seems
to be to prohibit a left-hand turn by westbound
traffic entering Kestral Parkway North into the
entryway near Wells Fargo. Those who use the
intersection frequently believe those left turns
are one of the primary causes of congestion. It is
believed other changes, including the double lefthand turn lane, will relieve congestion caused by
those exiting that location.
Residents of Eagles Point raise another road
issue. They queried the board on whether the LMA,
or the Eagles Point associations, were responsible for
maintaining the road in the Eagles Point. They made it
clear that question, only regarded the road and not the
parking areas or driveways. Jack Jost indicated he would
check the various documents to determine the answer.
Following the meeting, while it was reported to the Eagle
that Jost had determined a quit claim deed that officially
turned the property over to the LMA in September 1998.
Therefore, that road is the responsibility of the Landings
Management Association.
|Intersection Revision Still Delayed
LMA Treas. Don McMurray reported the budget was
on schedule. The truck the LMA is trying to sell was still
unsold and the budget may need some slight revisions
due to potential legal fees regarding the intersection
alterations. He indicated the finance committee would be
examining reserves at their next meeting. There is some
concern no reserves are planned for the various structures
under the LMA’s control such as the gazebo at the end
of the Nature Trail currently needing substantial repair,
the North gate house needs some attention as well as the
mechanics and electronics involved in security and the
mechanical gates.
NOTE: There will be NO July meeting of the
LMA board. The August meeting will be Thursday,
August 1.
Jim Bagley, aesthetics committee chair, reported
that discussions were still underway on attempting
to find some method of disguising the area behind
the shopping center, visible as residents and guests
approach the main gate.
Larry Lawrence commented on the buildup of
silt and weeds in the North Lake. There had been
some discussion with the County bout installing
a filtration system to help prevent this problem,
largely caused by drainage from the Trail and other
areas not the responsibility of the LMA. Sarasota
County has stated however, they will not be doing
work on it at this time. Alternatives will be examined
for clearing the silt which involves fairly substantial
dredging and hauling of debris and silt.
Larry Lawrence also reported that The Landings
Eagle transition committee continues to meet and
will handle delivery of most editorial content to the
publisher when the current editor retires after the June
issue. Board members and residents who attended the
meeting thanked Irwin for his 11 years of service to the
community.
Landscape chair Joe Hennessy in a written report
stated the cleanup of many Brazilian pepper trees along
the Nature Trail is completed for this season. Next comes
the process of poisoning the stumps so they don’t return.

President Bill Whitman, reflecting on the
Workman’s Compensation issue discussed at the
LMA Workshop, raised the question possible LHA
exposure to claims made for injuries suffered by
vendors not covered by Workers Compensation
doing work for homeowners. LHA counsel will
be consulted. The anticipated premium if such
coverage is deemed appropriate is approximately
$500 per year.
He also discussed the possibility of working with
the LMA maintenance contractor for future repairs
to damaged mailboxes. The LHA would stockpile
components for the repairs.
Mr. Whitman expressed his gratitude for the 11
years of service that Irwin Starr, retiring editor and
publisher of The Landings Eagle, has given to the
Landings community as a whole and the LHA in
particular.
The remainder of the brief meeting dealt with
Landscaping and Architecture requests and
violations. As is customary The Eagle redacts names
and specific addresses unless a violation is raised to
the hearing level.
Peregrine Point Cir E: While work is progressing
on correcting some of the problems, the condition
of the roof remains a serious problem.
Peregrine Point Way: The Board is awaiting the
engineering report and proposal before proceeding.
Peregrine Point Cir N: There is concern that the
dimensions and location of the previously approved
pool installation need to be confirmed. The Board
will request a set of plans prepared by the pool
contractor.
Pine Harrier Cir: The nature and location of
the front-yard landscaping was discussed with
the owner. The board will request a detailed
landscaping plan.
Landings Lane: The owner has requested
permission to put a small storage shed in the rear
of the property that will be shielded from view by a
fence and vegetation. The board requested that the
owner provide comments from all adjacent neighbors
regarding the shed. If subsequently approved, the
board will require its removal upon sale.
Landings Way: The owner submitted a plan for
landscaping changes in the area inside the circular
driveway. The board approved the request.
Pine Harrier Cir: The owner requested approval of
landscaping changes & replacing a concrete driveway
w/pavers. The board approved the request.
Pine Harrier Dr: The owner requested approval
for a landscaping cleanup including the removal of
several minor trees in the rear of the property. The
board approved the request.
Progress on existing violations:
Roof Washing: Peregrine Point Cir N: A final
letter will be sent.
Trees: Peregrine Point Cir N: Roof is OK, An
existing Carrotwood tree needs to be trimmed back
or preferably removed and replaced. A letter will
be sent.

LMA Workshop Planning Session
May 7 the LMA held
a four hour, two session
meeting. Association
presidents, new and
veteran LMA board
members.
The early session
featured LMA counsel
Chad McClenathen
covered a broad range
of topics. He laid out
the responsibilities
of a Board and of
the individual Board
members including
some of the differences between Condominium
Association and and Homeowner association (LMA
and LHA). Each Florida Legislature seems to make
relatively substantial changes in those two sets
of rules. He detailed some passed by the current
Legislature awaiting the Governor’s signature.
McClenathen explained the necessity of
“Director’s and Officer’s Liability Insurance”
and the care required in selecting the correct
on for your board’s needs. Questions from the
assembly covered everything form Workman’s
Compensation Insurance to television antennas.
Concluding the first session Sarah Rhodes
showed the near complete public relations section of
the new Landings internet site and outlined some of
the possibilities of the “residents only” section of the
site still being prepared
for development.
After a sandwich break
the LMA board met to
review activities of the
past year and lay out
preliminary plans and
ideas for the year(s)
to come. Facilitator,
board member Marie
Jacaruso worked through
each committee’s
responsibilities and drew
out those present ideas
for what should be on
the agenda as next year’s plan and budget are
developed.
Landin Bill Donaldson provided a suggested
outline as a guide for developing those ideas
into plans, action steps, budgets and ultimately a
proposal for full board consideration.

Vacation
Dentistry!
It’s our Summer Season which seems to last from May 15th to October 15th and it’s a good time to head out on trips and vacations or try to
escape the heat.
Many things have to be considered and plans have to be made but
most of us don’t consider that minor aches and bothers can become
major problems while away from home, especially on cruises and when
out of the USA.
Make sure those little tooth things you’ve ignored or dealt with are
taken care of before you leave. If you have a spare denture - take it.
Consult with your dentists for their opinion of what can wait and what
shouldn’t.
If you have any questions or comments, please don’t wait until the
last moment.
Let’s work toward a truly happy and healthy
vacation season.
It’s up to you!

Condos in Common
By Scott Diamond
I was always interested in history, but didn’t
realize when I sat down to write this month’s
column it was the 226th anniversary of the start
of the Federal Convention held in Philadelphia to
revise the Articles of Confederation that eventually
becomes the U.S. Constitution. Wait, this has
more than a familiar ring to it. It reminds me that
the Articles of Incorporation for a condominium
association would typically come a few months
before the Declaration of Condominium. Although
the time table of our founding fathers was a little
different, technology being what is was back then,
those Articles served their purpose until a more
formal document could be adopted.
History Channel fans might know that the
Articles of Confederation were being followed from
1781 until the Constitution became effective in 1789. Somewhat of a long stretch. But those early patriots
wasted no time as they began to immediately draft
amendments to the Constitution which we all know
to be the Bill of Rights. The first ten amendments
only took a little over two years to get the necessary
75% positive votes for adoption. I’d like to give
credit to Postmaster Ben Franklin for moving this
along, but he had left office years before although
he still was an original signer of the Constitution.
Condominium amendments sometime take
shape about a month into the new Declaration
due to some additional recordings necessitated
by the Developer. But in so many cases, there is
a great void until the
next amendment comes
usually generated by
you, the people. These
usually focus on the
Use Restrictions or
perhaps the Common
Expenses that the owners finally decide to modify.
Another way of doing this without the many
amendments that might eventually follow, is to
amend the entire document when it’s time and try
to include all of the changes at once and have the
owners vote to pass the restated Declaration. This
could be a monumental task that ideally should
hold until the next generation is ready to effect
change in their way.
A Document Review Committee could be created
to bring to the attention of the Board of Directors
paragraphs in the Declaration that could be
streamlined. Certain changes could be incorporated
in conjunction with state law and perhaps that
document can shrink in size with owners adopting
this newly amended and restated version by the
majority vote as stipulated in that document.
Several of my associations will be working on
projects of this type this summer with passage
scheduled for their next annual meetings. Even
with technology on our side, this will still be a
challenge to get the votes needed. So when the time
comes, be ready to support your association.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE June 2013
Raising Landin
Editor’s Note: This is the first in a continuing series following the training and development of Landin.
He is being raised by volunteer family Ted and Karen Shaeffer. In preparation for his career as a
Southeastern Guide Dogs. He will report on his progress here monthly – with a bit of help form
Ted & Karen (Picture credits: Ted Shaeffer and Sue Lewis)
Hey folks, I’m Landin !
May was a pretty big month for me. I gave
my mommy Justice (pictured here with my 5
sisters...such girls) a great Mother’s Day gift by
promising I would stop teething on my sisters’
ears. That was easy to keep when I moved in
to my new people’s house in The Landings.
Recently, I went over to my kid sister Blaze’s
house to play (I’m bigger than she is). I kept
my promise as best I could, but couldn’t resist
pouncing on her. I also think I’m slightly ahead
of the game because I’m already learning how
to swim!
I have been working really hard on the “Sit”
“Stay” “Come” and “Down” commands, as
well as being the perfect little gentleman when
my people take me out places. I am allowed to
go everywhere with crew, even when the signs
say ‘No Dogs’. All I have to do is simply put
my coat on and we get to go inside. I’ve noticed
that no one can pet me when I wear my coat
though. Hum, I wonder what that’s about?
I am also realizing that my people did not like it when I piddled
on their floor. . . I think they want me to do my business outside. Oh
by the way, my person collects my poop in a bag . . .very strange! Anyway, one day I went to a place called The Racquet Club. There
sure were a lot of nice people who wanted to see and pet me. I heard
some people say that is where my
name comes from. Landin? Funny,
I guess Tennis Ball was taken. While I was at the “Club” a lady
everyone called “Sue” dropped by
and took a few more pictures of me
and my “interim dad.” See those
pictures below.
The harness that I’m trying on
sure seemed big but my people
tell me that someday it will fit me
just right. I guess the darn thing
must shrink a lot. Anyhow, I’ll
talk to you soon . . .but for now
just remember: MY NAME IS
LANDIN AND I WAS BORN TO
BE A GUIDE DOG!
Oh well, this is me
at the end of
most days!
And here
I am trying on a
harness.

|Join the Celebration
Longtime Landin and U.S. Veteran Bob Fernander suggests The Landings turn out a massive celebration of Flag
Day by displaying your flag June 14, National Flag Day.
USflag.org reports “B.J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged in 1885 for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin
Public School, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as
‘Flag Birthday’.
Inspired three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution
of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. While
Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson’s proclamation, it was not until
August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year
as National Flag Day.”

We’ve seen a welcome increase in the use

and 4) will be taking place in June.

The activity level has certainly slowed down as summer
approaches. As far as the exercise classes go, Jazzercise is off until
November. Zumba, water aerobics and yoga will continue through
the summer as long as there are enough students to hold the class.
Joe still has his cardio tennis clinics three times a week on Monday
evening and Wednesday & Saturday mornings.
Even though there are less people using the Club this time of
year, I still recommend calling in advance to schedule your court or room reservations. If you don’t, we can’t guarantee the space you want will be available. As a reminder
to all the association presidents and groups that meet in one of our clubhouses, please
let the Pro Shop know if you are cancelling any meetings or taking a break for the
summer so we can remove it from the calendar. This will save the staff time and effort
in setting up and breaking down the rooms and also allow space for other meetings to

Courts 3 & 4 will be renovated between the last week of May and the first week
of June. These are the final two courts to be rebuilt. The other six have already been
completed in a project that began back in 2009. This extensive court maintenance is only
done roughly once every 20 years so the courts are in good shape for the foreseeable
future. The annual resurfacing project for the remaining six courts will be done two
courts at a time during the months of August and September. Although most of these are still some time away, please mark your calendars for the
following upcoming events: Joe’s Wimbledon & Whites tennis round robin happens
July 6th. The annual Labor Day BBQ is scheduled for September 3rd. Lessons for Life,
our annual cancer charity tennis event will be December 7th. The final social event of

Racquet Club Fitness Center Opening
While the Landings Racquet Club’s expanded
Fitness Center has been open since March 14th, it held
a Grand Opening party on April 19th at the Center. Organized by Lisa Bradley, a certified trainer and
Landings resident, the event attracted upwards of 80
current and hopefully future users of the facility.
The facility’s cardiovascular workout equipment
includes three treadmills, arc trainer, elliptical trainer,
two recumbent bikes as well as two “air dynes”
and a rowing machine (Erg). For strength training
it has a full set of Hoist dual equipment
including a lat pull/mid row, chest multi
press, pec deck/rear delt, leg press/curl,
leg abduction/adduction and leg press/calf

floor exercises.

2013 Landings Golf Season
By Dave Doherty
The Landings Golf Scramble held on Sunday, April 7th was a great success. Twenty-four “golfers”
took to the range and putting green at Serenoa Golf Course prior to playing a 9-hole scramble. After
refreshments at the 19th hole, players and guests returned to enjoy a social hour and a catered dinner
served in the Lakeside Clubhouse. All participants were awarded prizes but special recognition should
be given to the winning team of Georges Chauvet, Sheira Smith, Sam Edelman and Frank Dooher. Also
golfers Georges Chauvet and Deb Doherty for Longest Drive and Graham Murray for Closest to the
Pin.
At this time we want to acknowledge all of the local stores and organizations that supported this
event: Publix, Peach’s Restaurant, Johnny’s Car Wash, Golfsmith, Serenoa Golf Club, Geckos, James
Riegel with Black Tie Catering, Sweet Tomatoes, the Corkscrew Deli and the Landings Racquet Club
for providing the Clubhouse for the party.
This tournament concluded the January through April Sunday mixed golf events held on Sunday
afternoons. The coordinators of the Ladies’ 9 and 18 hole groups continue to organize play. Do not
hesitate to contact Lyn Cassell and Liz Schrieber if you are interested to join in a game of golf.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE June 2013
My young cousin from “up north” telephoned to
ask me to substantiate some family lore from long
ago. In satisfying his appeal, my mind traveled back
to the late sixties when life was good and my wife
and children looked up to me as a successful head
of a business enterprise.
We decided to sell our mid- priced car and
purchase a sleek four door Lincoln automobile. We
loved the luxury of driving our Town Car during
its first year, cleaning the interior and washing all
dirt off the shining exterior. A trip to the local car
wash was decided upon. I watched through a small
window, as the enthused worker vacuumed carpets
and seats meticulously, getting our car ready for its
soapy water spray then drying cycle.
Typical with professional car washes, an
automobile needs to be chained to a pulley as it is
guided through the various processes and drying
cycle. As I peep through my window, seeing our
car in motion, I am frozen in fear! Both passengerside doors were wide open, the foam creating a
bubbly wash within! The attendant obviously had
not been schooled, that Lincoln rear doors open and
close hinged from the back end of the vehicle. Our
car, due to soap and water flooding of the interior,
the electric functions and every driving system
saturated, it became totally useless.
The adjuster for the car wash allowed acceptable
compensation for the ineffective
vehicle. Unable to quickly decide on a
replacement auto, I became impatient,
shopping in new car show-rooms alone.
Foolishness overcoming me, I purchased
a Dodge four door vehicle that had
normal front and back door openings.
Coming home to surprise my wife with
this “black monster of a car,” Joanne
showed the trouper she’s always been,
smiling through gritted teeth, knowing
we had a new Dodge in our garage.
A few weeks after the Dodge was
ours, I drove to my office in New York
City, advising the attendant at the garage
that I would claim my car prior to 7 p.m.
“No problem,” he said. No attendant was
in view, when I arrived at 5:45 p.m. one
car was still parked, but not mine! The
sign was easily visible: “Open 12 hours
a day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.” I phoned the police
to report my obviously stolen car, and taxied hack
home. We laughed, we cried, we waited 30 days for
our insurance check.
To be sure, this was not the end. Joanne, happy
to be rid of the Dodge, we purchased, you’ll never
guess, another Lincoln four door beauty, swearing
we’d be more alert in dealing with car washes. We
enjoyed our Town Car for one or two years. Joanne,
my wonderful mate suggested on the upcoming
Sunday that I sleep late on Father’s Day. The phone
rang, it was my Joanne crying in anger as she related
having driven to a different car wash other than I
had utilized years ago with poor results. Joanne too
unfortunately had seen a bubbles trip through the
left open back doors.
“Once upon a time, then yet once more” had
re-occurred.
A few weeks later, the police phoned, having
recovered the black Dodge in the Bronx area (not a
spot, not a scratch in sight) directing us to retrieve
our car. We sold it of course, laughing some, crying
some for joy and the opportunity to purchase a
sharp new convertible featuring a retractable roof
with the touch of a button and only two normal
doors to enter and exit.
Our eccentric car life was not complete. In
1970, on a trip to London, I was enamored and
itching to buy a 1959 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud,
promising Joanne to wait until we returned back
home before making such a buy. I searched British
car distributors in New York, found my prize and
made the purchase, never again thinking to take the
“beauty” to a car wash. Prior to moving to Sarasota,
we sold the car back to the dealer at an acceptable
loss, looking forward to a new and exciting life.
As Linda Ellebee always closed her radio
programs: “and that’s the way it was.”

Kids’ Corner
By Heidi Bodor
|Jack Gamble – age 9 ½
4th grader at Phillippi Shores IB World School
- Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I have two little sisters – 2 ½ and 1 ½ years old.
- Do you have any pets?
We have two yellow labs. And my one little sis is like
half a wild animal.
- What do you like most about the Landings?
I like it because I know a lot of people here that go to
my school and I like the banyan trees by your house. The
“pit of doom” is there. It’s a big pit in the tree that you
can slide into. One time, I got stuck in it and had to take
my shirt off and squeeze through the openings! - What is your favorite subject in school?
Writing. I like writing stories about sports cars like
Rolls Royces, Aston Martins, and Lamborghinis. I read
about how they are made and research on CarBuzz (an
app that tells about cars) on my Dad’s iPad for a couple
hours each day.
- What is your favorite car?
The Bugatti Veyron. It has a good look, has an 18
cylinder engine, and is the world’s most expensive car. - What are your favorite books?
Harry Potter and magazines from Publix about cars.
- What are your favorite sports?
Soccer. I play a lot. I’m with the All Stars League. 20
THE LANDINGS EAGLE June 2013
- What is your favorite team?
The Italians are my favorite because my Dad is Italian
and that’s where Ferraris are made.
- What do you do in your spare time?
I like going outside with my dog Boone. He catches
lizards and I throw them back into the bushes. I used to
have lemonade stands every Friday but stopped. It was
a “break-even” thing. With the money we made, we’d
buy more cups, etc. I like bike riding and rollerblading
too.
- What do you want to be when you grow up?
I’d like to be a salesman for Lamborghini/Ferrari. One time, we visited Lamborghini/Lotus/Range Rover
and they had a 4GT, a very rare one. The owner of the
company owned it. It’s worth 12 million dollars. - What was your favorite trip?
I like visiting NYC. Well, I half like it because I get lost
there a lot. It’s big. I usually see cool cars there - a lot of
Ferraris. When I look in the car buyers book, there are
always a lot in NYC.
- What’s your favorite food?
Rico’s pepperoni and sausage pizza
- If you could be any animal, what would you be?
A shark. It would be fun swimming around scaring
people and I could get whatever I want because I’m the
“king of the ocean!”

Pet of the Month
Beau von Kessel
Hello! My name is Beau von Kessel. I am a 2 year
old beagle mix. They call me a Heinz 57 dog and my
vet smiles when she sees me. I am a big dog, stuck
in a little body.
Many of you might have seen me on my daily
walks around the neighborhood. I try to make a
point of saying hello to everyone I see. There is
nothing I enjoy more than playing with other dogs
in the Landings. We chase each other around and
wrestle in the grass. I don’t growl and certainly don’t
bite. The little dogs usually pin me to the ground.
I came to live with my family a little more than a
year ago. They found me at the humane society in
Manatee County, where I had been for a few months.
Animal services had picked me up as a stray running
through the fields in Bradenton. I had demodex
mange, which the humane society treated until my
family took me in. When they came to visit me the
first time, I put on my best show, running in circles
and playing with the kids. I had no trouble and felt
at home immediately. I was house broken, listened,
and don’t run away. I only bark when someone
comes to the door. My bark sounds awfully funny
and a lot like a hound.
One of my favorite things to do is rub my belly
in the cool grass. I stretch my hind legs out and pull
myself along. I am good at using my front paws
like hands. I can grab onto anything. I hold tennis
and soccer balls tight as I peel the covering off of
them. Mulch, sticks, or dog toys, are no match for
my chewing ability. My neighbors want to hire me
to help clear and dispose of palm fronds that fall
to the ground. I love my two “kids”, who I follow
around outside and curl up next to at night. I am
so happy here in the Landings and look forward to
meeting new and old friends along the way.
Second Dog Incident with Injuries
The second injury from a dog encounter in as
many months took place on Peregrine Pont Circle
Saturday, April 20. The resident reports he was
walking his rescued greyhound, Madison, when
a dog, likely a pit-bull mix, escaped from an open
near-by garage door. According to the victim the dog
came racing out savagely attacking the greyhound.
Regrettably, at least for the dog walker he tried to
intervene and was bitten numerous times on his right
hand.
After treatment at Sarasota Memorial the hand
has healed nicely. His intervention perhaps saved
the greyhound, but certainly contributed to saving
its right front leg. Though, he states: Madison will
never be the same.
In reporting this instance to The Eagle the
resident’s primary goal was to remind people of
owner’s responsibility, but also to express concern
at how lenient the law is regarding such instances.
After reporting the incident to Sarasota County
Animal Control he learned a savage attack such as
this only allows for the owners to receive a “Vicious
dog letter.” Even a second attack only allows for
the posting of a sign and a requirement the dog be
muzzled if outside of their yard. It would take a third
offense before the County would be in a position to
take the dog and consider euthanization.
In a letter to County Commissioner Nora
Patterson the victim opined: “We live in a very quiet
neighborhood that has many young children and
an enormous number of people walking their dogs.
I believe there is something very wrong if this dog
or others like it are allowed to maul another animal,
child or adult and still have nothing meaningful done
to have the vicious dog put down. Would you like to
explain to the parent of a three year old child why this
dog has now mauled their child even though it was
known to all that the dog had a history of unprovoked
violence?” Patterson respond sympathetically and passed the
concerns on to Sheriff Knight. Knight’s response, also
sympathetic, included these details on procedure,
county ordinance and his personal concern.
In this case, the suspect dog had no previous
attacks, thus it is the procedure to issue a “Vicious
Animal” warning letter. Our Animal Services Officers
personally serve the letter, with a copy of the Vicious
Animal Ordinance to educate the owners. If there is
another preventable attack then Animals Services
would declare the animal as a “Vicious Animal.”
This would then require the owner to post signs,
pay a $200.00 registration fee to the county ($100.00
each year after), the animal would not be allowed
outside without a leash and a muzzle, etc. If Animal
Services catches the dog loose after this, or if the
animal attacks again, Animal Services can order an
order for euthanasia. The county ordinance clearly
spells the steps and the owner is always entitled to a
hearing. Like you, I own two dogs and would hope
something like you experienced never happens to
my animals.
Details of the ordinance, provided by Colonel
Steve Burns, Chief Deputy, Sarasota Sheriff’s
Department, provide a number of options and
approaches to the “vicious dog” issue. Depending
on the circumstances further action can be taken by
the Animal Services Director who makes the initial
determination that an Animal is a “Vicious Animal”
based upon specific criteria in the ordinance. Actions
he may choose to take are all subject to a hearing to
protect the animal’s owner’s rights.
This particular incident was concluded with the
keepers of the attacking dog handling medical and
vet bills for the human and animal victims. The dog
itself was shipped out of state to a safer environment
and determination of its fate.

Fascinating Facts about Our Down Under Vacation
By Dee Ricapito
Ralph and I, along
with Rob and Bonnie
Dombrowsky from
Eagles point, took a cruise
circling AUSTRALIA
and NEW ZEALAND. The native Aborigine
Australians were the
first nomadic inhabitants. Now they take pride in
their dance and culture and demonstrated the
Didgeridoo. We took lots of pictures together. Australians originated from European explorers,
people from the British penal colonies, migrants
and traders. About 90% of today’s Australians are
of European descent, and others are from Asia and
the Middle East. As you could imagine, the variety
of food is marvelous; and you will find Asian food
everywhere nearly on every corner. If you like a
taste of home, you can even find McDonald’s chains
there. The Burger King chain is called, “Hungry
Jacks.”
There are over 150 nationalities represented in the
population. Our most wonderful memories come
from the friendly people who wish us “no worries,” and when we say “good by,” they say, “good on
ya.” We discovered fun loving people everywhere
traveling from Hobart Tasmania (where the
Tasmanian Devil lives), to Perth, Adelaide, Darwin,
even jumping in the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns off
the coast of Queensland, to Brisbane and ending in
its largest city Sydney. The people were wonderful
and loved our accent, too. Our ship docked by the
Sydney Harbor Bridge where we were treated to the
sites of the world famous Sydney Opera House. But, that is only half the story, we then went
to NEW ZEALAND which lies half way between
the Equator and the South Pole. It is over 1,200
miles from Australia. We experienced some rough
waters in this area. The Maori people were the first
settlers, from Polynesia around the 13th century. We visited one of their villages and saw the wood
carvings used to decorate their buildings. The first
Europeans to reach New Zealand arrived and
developed commercial farming. We went to a sheep
farm and enjoyed tea, lamb pie, and shared in a
sheep shearing experience.
New Zealand is isolated from other countries
and is divided into the South Island and the North
Island which is dotted with many volcanos and
magnificent mountain chains. We sailed into three
beautiful areas called sounds, knowledgeable
people say they rival the Norwegian Fjords.
Another memorable experience is seeing the
devastation of the earthquake in Christchurch and
the positive mending and rebuilding the people are
proudly doing.
I am told there are no snakes in New Zealand. There are some strange insects like the weta, that
can grow the size of a mouse. Kiwi, and Kakapo
are flightless birds found there, and the Albatross
are the world’s largest sea birds but we had no
sightings. We saw a Wallaby, Tasmanian devils,
koala bears and more. Ralph fed the kangaroos at
an animal refuge in Hobart Tasmania.
Another highlight was in Bali Indonesia, in a
monkey sanctuary, where hundreds of monkeys
roam free among the flowers and fauna. What fun
people were having feeding them bananas. The
weather throughout the trip was warm with cool
nights. It rained two days in Bali which, in February
starts their rainy season. We were lucky in respect
to the weather, since there was a typhoon right after
we left Port Hedland. Then, a flood in Brisbane the
day after we sailed away.
I was ending the long plane flight with the
thought, “A vacation is like an investment in LIFE. They can steal your car, or you can lose your money;
but no one can take your memories from you”!

Pet Talk
By Dr. Anne Chauvet
1. What does it mean when my dog’s nose it dry? Should I seek help?
Dry nose is a good thing. If the nose is cracked, crusty or losing color,
that is a problem. If you note excessive discharge of the nose or yellow
discharge, then you should seek veterinary help. Any blood from the nose
one or two nostrils need to be checked out as soon as possible.
2. Reasons why I should not feed my dog table scraps.
Most dogs love table scraps and anything from your hands is good to
them. However, we tend to add spices and seasonings, which can be harsh
to the untrained stomach of a dog on regular dog food. Pancreatitis is a
possible complication of feeding food the pet is not used to. Vomiting as
well as diarrhea can also occur after eating table scraps. Most of all, feeding
your dog table scraps breeds bad habits: dog drooling on you and your
guests, begging with paws and nudging with nose constantly are just not
good behaviors. In rare cases, dogs can also become aggressive.
3. Why do we not vaccinate pets for Lyme Disease in Florida.
Actually many people vaccinate their dogs for Lyme Disease in Florida.
In this state the tick that carries the disease, black-legged deer tick, is not
as common as in more woody lands like the Carolinas. Also, many pets
live in the cities as opposed to the country side, and thus are less likely to
be exposed to this type of tick.
4. Which dog breeds are predisposed for disc diseases and why?
There are two types of disc diseases: type I and type II. The type I disc
is sudden and herniation/extrusion of the center of the disc into the canal
through the ring of the disc. This can happen with trauma or in dogs that
have long bodies and short legs (chondodystrophic breeds). These breeds
have a congenital and hereditary disease that leads to the center of the disc,
which becomes calcified and loses its shock absorbance capacity. These
discs can herniate without trauma.
Type II is a bulging type of disc and tends to occur in the lower back or
in the neck area. Ususally large breed dogs, like Shepherds, are affected by
this type.In this case, the problems occur progressively over time.
Both types (I and II) may require surgery, but may be resolved
with medical care. If surgery is needed, please seek a veterinary
neurologist/neurosurgeon.
Dr. Chauvet earned her Doctor
of Veterinary Medicine from the
University of Saskatchewan in
Saskatoon, Canada, completed a
small animal medicine/surgery
internship at the University of
Illinois in Urbana and finished her
residency in neurology/neurosurgery
at the University of California,
Davis. She has been trained in
small animal rehabilitation by the
Canine Rehabilitation Institute of
Wellington, Florida and is known
internationally for her specialized
work in the relatively rare field
of veterinary neurology speaking
to, training, and consulting
with veterinary practices and
organizations globally.

will choose a few questions
to share with readers.

By Dr. Albert L.Weeks
|FLORIDA FOSSILEERS: THE HUNT GOES ON
Dry spells are always a blessing in disguise for Sarasota’s fossil hunters. With
diminished rainfall, the rivers and sea level become lowered. Recent years are no
exception. Riverbeds and shores are drier, more exposed. All of which make diving,
digging, and collecting of vertebrate and invertebrate specimens much easier.
“We’re very active right now,” Bill Silk, president of the Fossil Club of Sarasota,
said of a recent dry spell.. At monthly meetings held out on Stickney Road near the
Intracoastal, club members display their finds. You see Mammoth and Mastodon
Elephant bones (huge vertebra, jawbones, femurs, ribs, a huge molar tooth, etc.), skulls
and remains of the Giant Sloth and other primordial mammals, scores of primitive
whale and shark teeth, mollusks, such as Sand Dollars, and Indian relics (arrowheads).
“Where do you find all this?” you ask.
The answer you get is some of the choice places are kept secret. But upstream on
the Peace River is a great source. Understandably, the impressive finds largely go
unphotographed. Some of the specimens, worth hundreds of dollars each, are so bulky
they are hard to lift. Scuba gear is largely used for going to depths in whatever stream
or river. You keep searching a spot for over 5 hours. In the last few minutes, one of the
divers says, you may find something. Such work can be dangerous. Running hands
more or less blindly through turgid water, scraping into the river bottom definitely
have its hazards. People throw empty bottles and sharp objects into the water.
Florida as Wet Nurse
Geologically, how did Florida become such a paradise for fossil hunters?
It all goes back millions of years to the primordial continent of Pangea, the wet
nurse of Florida. We should note that no dinosaurs ever dwelled in our state. Here’s
why
Over 200 million years ago, the world’s several continents were all clumped
together in one huge mass, called Pangea, at the South Pole. The upper half of Earth
was entirely water. The Moon was closer to the Earth then and looked twice its size
today; a smaller Earth then spun faster so its days were less than 23 hours. At that time
the Florida Peninsula, or “Platform,” looked like a half-submerged appendix stuck in
the side of west central Africa, of all places.. When over the eons, Pangea drifted far
to the northwest, it crossed the Equator and split into the big plates, Laurentia and
Gondwana. Our discrete peninsula itself, according to some geologists, remained
independent like a raft near the South Pole. It even disappeared for a time into the
sea. Only some millions of years later did it rise again and drift north together with
the whole South American continent. Both then rejoined the southwest corner of the
North American bulk of Laurentia. Florida then took the form it has today of a new,
bigger appendage jutting out into the South Atlantic Ocean.
So, for most of its life, Florida was underwater. As a result, our geologically-young
state still has the lowest-lying terrain in the nation. Hencem sink holes, underwater
creeks (as through The Landings), bogs, and so on. Much of the Stater, in fact, is below
sea level. As the epochs passed, Florida’s surface land widened somewhat as the ocean
receded (yes, ocean levels go up and down periodically, “global warming” to the
contrary). Then the peninsula again narrowed down. At the furthest lateral extension
of the partly submerged Florida Platform east and west, Florida was double its present
width as seen on today’s maps.
Dr. Weeks with a group
of amateur fossileers
(Peace R.)
Group’s find: a 40 million
year old petrified starfish.
Exotic animals of many genuses and species--absent dinosaurs--lived in Florida’s
prehistoric swamps and jungles. Besides hundreds of species of reptiles—snakes,
lizards, crocodiles, alligators—ancient mammals and other vertebrates made their way
south. When the various ice ages descended on the southern half of North America
thousands of years ago, an “icehouse” environment may have done in some of the
mammals. But others, it is believed, perished in the onslaught of heat in the region
that their bulky bodies could not ventilate. Such mammalian fossil remains are very
much in demand today. The rare creatures include the ancient Rhinoceros, Giant Lion,
Mammoth and Mastodon Elephants, Giant Ground Sloth, Cave Bear, Saber-toothed
Tiger, extinct wild horses, Eocene Whale, numerous species of sharks (Giant Great
White, an extinct Mako, Snaggletooth, etc.), a wide variety of mollusks with exquisite
shell-shapes, and many other animals of the Paleocene, Oligocene, Miocene, Pliocene,
and Pleistocene Epochs of the Quaternary and Tertiary Periods going back 60 million
years. Incidentally, much of Florida’s present vegetation pre-dates the appearance of
reptiles and mammals over 200 million years ago, or long before Florida’s birth as a
peninsula in North America..
One can imagine that these giant-mammals added considerable tonnage to the
virtually floating, barge-like Florida Peninsula. This 58,666 sq.-mile mass, geologists
say, would periodically dip in and out of the sea in cyclic rolling-and-pitching motions.
Yes, Florida has felt tremors from earthquakes but very rarely. It occasionally rocks—
literally--abetted, perhaps, by the lumbering, ubiquitous trailer trucks and SUV’s of
modern times!
So, what about dinosaurs? Probably most Floridians know that none of these
creatures ever traipsed around our peninsula. Alas, “Jurassic Park” lies further north.
The reason for the absence in Florida of Tyrannosaurus and Brontosaurus, et al., should
be obvious: There was no Florida before the dinosaurs became extinct! Their extinction
dates back 120 million years, or more than double Florida’s geologic age. However, the
southernmost extent of dinosaur habitation in the Southeast is only 100 miles to the
north of Florida—namely, at Selma, AL, and Tupelo, LA. That is, those much “older”
places.
