October 2014 STM ST THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC ACADEMY School closes for the half term holidays on Friday 24th October and Re—opens on Tuesday 4th November 2014 Inside this issue: Headteachers News 2 Geography news 4 History News 6 PE News 8 College Year 2013-14 13 YEAR 10 MUNICH TRIP IN JULY ST THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC ACADEMY ACTING PRINCIPAL’S news Dear Parents, This half term has rattled by at an amazing rate and pupils deserve their one-week break for all of their hard work. It is difficult to believe that on 1st November, it will be 12 months since our school became an Academy as a part of All Saints’ Catholic Collegiate. The Directors have been unstinting in their work on behalf of us all and I thank them for their efforts. We will be celebrating our first anniversary with a joint training day here at St Thomas More where we will be joined by colleagues from the 4 Primary Schools in our MAC; Our Lady’s (Fenton), St Augustine’s (Meir), St Gregory’s (Longton) and St Maria Goretti (Bentilee). We will spend much of the day concentrating on the important issue of Literacy. The day will end with Bishop McGough celebrating Holy Mass. I would like to add my congratulations to our Year 9 football team for winning the Stoke-on-Trent Schools’ Cup. This is a great achievement and their 7-0 victory away at Blythe Bridge High school in the final shows that the team has great potential. With the season only just underway, we have great hopes for all of our football teams. It was a privilege to present the team with the cup and their medals during assembly. These last few days have seen a large number of Year 10 pupils on retreat at the new Soli Centre at Alton. It was an honour for us to be invited as this is a newly opened facility and we are the first school from the Archdiocese to attend. Pupils engaged in a range of activities that all included an element of reflection and discussion and prayer, and it was through these activities that every child was challenged and encouraged to find hidden strength, learn new skills, and experience achievement as part of a team and as an individual. It is our aim that pupils in all year groups will have an opportunity this year to attend a similar event. Our 6th Form Open evening is rapidly approaching on Thursday 13th November. This provides an opportunity for Year 11 pupils and their parents to research the best subjects for further study. As I have mentioned before, I fervently believe that our own Sixth Form provides the very best option for our students, as they are able to continue their studies in familiar surroundings taught by teachers who already know their strengths and weaknesses. Our school’s ethos of caring for the individual can often be taken for granted but it adds that extra dimension that makes St Thomas More Sixth Form that bit special. I would urge all Year 11 families to attend to find out more about the subjects on offer not just at our school but also within the wider Trinity Sixth Form. Within our own school, we are looking at broadening our offer to capitalise on the new Sociology course by also offering A-levels in Psychology and Health & Social Care. I am delighted to confirm that our guest at this year’s Prize Evening is former pupil Bernie O’Reilly. Bernie is now Assistant Chief Constable for Staffordshire Police Force and it will be good to see him again. The last time I met him was on his last day as a pupil. That must be about 25 years ago. We are hoping to organise a 2nd Prize Event just before Easter for pupils who are currently in Years 7 to 11. We will let you know more about this as the event approaches. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. You can be confident of our best efforts at all times. We ventured to Cornwall in September to prepare for this exam. The focus of the fieldwork was on coastal processes and sustainable tourism... here is the report from the students… “Well after a long 5 hour car drive we arrived in Looe, Cornwall! We started our fieldwork at Port Looe beach with doing a sediment analysis, swingometer, wave period and swash. In site 1 we had Mrs Adams & Mr Millington site 2 Holly & Chloe and site 3 Taylor & Ben, the weather was on our side not a spot of rain in site. We then ventured into the town of Looe and had a game of cricket and made our way back to 'The Bridgeside Hotel'. Once we arrived back at the hotel we started getting straight to work, looking at the data and presenting our results to one another. Once we finished that we did a bit of Spearman’s Rank which took a lot of math skills crossed with Geography to complete. The next day we went to the 'Eden Project'. It was amazing we asked one of the team at the Eden project a few questions then went around to collect our data. We did a pedestrian count and a bipolar chart. It was very interesting while asking people where they were from to see if the Eden project was international or just national. We discovered that Eden project was in fact an international place with people from Germany there! When we had finished all collecting of data we went on the 'Skywire' Mr Millington was first up and with an awkward and nervous laugh he was up. As we went over the Eden project people stopped to look at us, it was like we were flying! Then all of the of a sudden all the everyone could hear was a sound like an owl only to look and see Taylor coming down the Skywire! After we had all finished at least the Skywire we went back to the hotel. When we got back we did Man Whitney U Test and again looked at our result from the Eden project to see if it was a sustainable place and if it was a myth or reality and represented what we had discovered. We worked together to figure out Man Whitney U and then showed the result we had collected. On our last day of work we travelled down to Newquay to look at two beaches and collect data. The first beach was Lusty Glaze, the waves were massive when we did the swingometer and then did the sediment analysis and wave period. Once we finished at Lust Glaze we drove over to Fistral Beach and did the same. The waves weren't as big there but the surfers were amazing, the swingometer was easier here because the waves wouldn't knock us over! Then we made our way back to Looe and went for some tea and to buy a few gifts and then had a game of cricket on the beach again! Team 1 being Taylor, Mr Millington & Chloe and Team 2 being Ben Mrs Adams & Holly! Team 2 won by the win of only one point. We made our way back to the hotel and looked at all the data we had and looked for any significant results! Once finished we had a pool tournament. Unfortunately that was the last night in Looe and it was a good one! The results we found showed things we didn't think would have been found! It was an amazing fieldwork trip that I'm sure everyone would enjoy! In particular the Biergarten, the historical tour of Munich and of course , the shopping! The tour of Dachau Concentration Camp was a moving experience that I am sure none of us will forget. On our finaL full day we went to the Olympic Park and Tower where we had a panoramic view of Munich and left our mark by writing our names. Throughout the trip we all bonded as a group, had a great time and are left with happy memories. A great end to the school year" By Rhiannon Pugh and Rebecca Highland Page 6 ST THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC ACADEMY History news .
