Mission Statement
The mission of The Scholarship Fund of
Alexandria (SFA), through its relationship with the community, is to encourage
and assist the students of the Alexandria
City Public Schools by providing them
with the necessary resources to pursue a
college or post-secondary education.
Dr. Morton Sherman, Superintendent
Susan D. Yowell, Executive Director
Message from the Director and Chair
2010 marks the beginning of the 25th Anniversary Year of The Scholarship Fund of
Alexandria – 25 years of successful partnership with Alexandria City Public Schools resulting
in more TC Williams High School graduates attending college. In that time, the Scholarship
Fund has awarded more than 3,300 scholarships providing nearly $7 million dollars in scholarship awards to graduates of TC Williams High School who have demonstrated the ability
and the desire to continue their education. This would not be possible without the support of
the entire Alexandria community. Thank you!
We appreciate all who have contributed their time and resources to the Scholarship
Fund of Alexandria throughout the year. All of the money raised through the Fall Telethon,
Spring Gala and our Corporate Partner program goes to the General Fund which is reserved
for need-based scholarships. These awards often fill the last critical gap in funding that a
student needs to make the step into college or continued career education.
In addition to providing much needed financial resources for college bound graduates, the Scholarship Fund staff provides much needed financial aid counseling and resources
to TC students as they go through the college application process. The staff also administers
hundreds of privately funded scholarships in addition to the General Fund awards supported
by SFA fundraising.
We thank all of you for your past commitment and your future efforts. Your support
makes a tremendous difference. We hope you will have the opportunity to celebrate our 25th
Anniversary Year with us by participating in our Fall Telethon (November 7, 2010) or Spring
Gala (April 30, 2011).

2010 PORTRAIT OF SUCCESS
2010 PORTRAIT OF SUCCESS
Brandon Alexander
Zohra Atmar
Senior Financial Analyst
for Lockheed Martin
Brandon Alexander is literally a child of the
Alexandria City Public Schools. With a mother
who was an ACPS teacher at Cora Kelly magnet
school, Brandon was always focused on his
academics.
Zohra Atmar’s mother carried her into Pakistan as
a baby to escape the conflict in Afghanistan. Her
family immigrated to the United States in 1983,
where Zohra, her brother and sister were raised in
Alexandria by their mother.
A natural leader and gifted athlete, at T.C.
Brandon was a member of the National Honor
Society and the Spanish National Honor Society,
in addition to earning All-American status on the
track team.
At T.C. Williams, Zohra, who described herself
as the “funny girl with big, curly hair,” was in
the Color Guard, the Asian Club, and managed
the track team her junior and senior years. Zohra
became involved with the Peer Mediation program
and, in that role, met with President Clinton, who
visited T.C. in the wake of the Columbine school
shooting. Zohra’s training in conflict mediation
helped set the stage for her future work in
Afghanistan.
Brandon attended the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 2003
with a B.S. in economics. Brandon is extremely
appreciative of the support from the Scholarship
Fund of Alexandria.
“It was really significant for me as far as being able
to afford college,” he says. “My parents were going
to have three kids in school at one time, with a
brother a year older than me and a sister two years
behind me. My scholarship relieved a big financial burden for myself and my family.”
Brandon began his career as retail buyer at Hecht’s, now known as Macy’s. Four years ago, he joined Lockheed
Martin, where he now works as a senior financial analyst at the Pentagon. In May of 2010 Brandon earned a
Masters in Business Administration from Georgetown University.
Brandon lives in Alexandria and passes on the gift of education to the next generation by tutoring students at
Shiloh Baptist Church for the SAT and GMAT tests. Although spare time is hard to come by, he honors the
encouragement that he received from T.C. track coach Mike Hughes by continuing to run. Brandon hopes to
give even more back to Alexandria by coaching a youth track team.

M.B.A., Georgetown University, 2010
SCHOLARSHIP FUND OF ALEXANDRIA
With a scholarship from the Scholarship Fund
of Alexandria, Zohra was able to attend Virginia
Tech. There she became more involved with multicultural issues, founding the Virginia Tech Eta
chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc.
Zohra graduated cum laude, with a major in political science and a triple minor in history, sociology and
international studies.
In 2006, Zohra fulfilled a dream when she returned to Afghanistan as a program support officer for an Afghan
non-governmental organization. She joined the International Security Assistance Force headquarters in Kabul,
and had the opportunity to travel extensively through eastern Afghanistan as a trainer and informal ambassador,
forging common understanding between Afghan and Western personnel and citizens.
Committed to a career in diplomacy and building cross-cultural relationships, Zohra later spent time in Jordan to
study religion and language. In 2009, Zohra joined Booz-Allen Hamilton as an instructor who trains military and
civilian personnel on regional and cultural issues.

2010 PORTRAIT OF SUCCESS
Deisy Lemus Brangman
Molly Fitzgerald
As a child, Deisy Brangman always said, “I am
more of a Lego kid, than a Barbie kid”. Her lifelong interest in “putting stuff together and seeing
how things work” led to her current position as
Assistant Project Manager for The Whiting-Turner
Contracting Company. Deisy is proud of a recently completed project, The Station at Potomac Yard,
a multi-use building that incorporates a LEED fire
station, retail space, and 64 work force and lowincome apartments with EarthCraft certification.
Molly Fitzgerald spends much of her time in the
West African crisis and conflict areas of Liberia and
Sierra Leone, working to ensure that people have
access to primary and preventative health care.
Her passion for helping to meet the needs of others
was born early, and in many ways began to take
shape in the diverse hallways of T.C. Williams.
Construction Project Manager
Born in Colombia, Deisy immigrated to the
United States with her family in 1986. She spent
her elementary school years in Arlington before
moving to Alexandria where she attended middle
and high school. While at T.C. Williams, Deisy’s
interest in architecture was sparked by a technical
drafting course. She graduated from T.C. in l998
and the University of Virginia in 2002 with a dual
B.A. in economics and Spanish and a minor in
architecture.
After college, Deisy worked for a small architecture
firm in Alexandria and at JPMorgan Chase Bank in New York City. Realizing that she wanted to “deal in real
dollars,” she returned to Virginia in 2005, and began her present career in construction management with
Whiting-Turner.
Public Health Advisor
After receiving a scholarship from the Scholarship
Fund of Alexandria for her community service involvement, Molly attended Davidson College and
majored in French. She went on to study health
and human rights in conflict situations at Johns
Hopkins University and received a PhD. from the
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
“When I look back on my time at T.C.,” Molly
says, “I realize that I never really understood what
some of my classmates whose families were
refugees or immigrants had faced, or the obstacles
they had overcome just be able to be here in
Alexandria. To have a house, food and access to
medical care. To be able to go to school and make
a better life. I took the diversity of T.C. Williams for granted, never really understanding what it represented until
I began to work with refugees and immigrants after college.”
Deisy lives in Arlington with her husband, Gemal Brangman. She likes to travel and takes a trip outside the
United States at least once a year. Through her job, Deisy recently became involved in a volunteer initiative that
includes high school beautification in Washington, DC. She also volunteers with her husband for Bartending for
Change, a group that donates all bartending tips to a local charity each month.
Molly worked with refugee populations in California as a volunteer with VISTA (now AmeriCorps) and later
joined the Peace Corps where she was posted to Togo in West Africa. Struck by the ways in which African
communities care for and support their members despite the challenges they face, Molly saw public health as a
way to make a difference. Now working as a public health advisor for John Snow International, a public health
research and consulting firm, Molly is helping to make basic health care more universally available.
Deisy is grateful for the monetary support from the Scholarship Fund, as well as the college counseling that helped
her navigate the financial aid and scholarship systems. Deisy observes that The Station at Potomac Yard “… is a
special project to me as it allowed me to contribute my knowledge -- made possible by the education funded by
the Scholarship Fund -- back to the City of Alexandria.”

Pongsak (Tony) Tiengtum
Technology “Titan”
Pongsak “Tony” Tiengtum has a talent for recognizing opportunity and seizing it. Tony learned
this trait from his parents, immigrants from
Thailand who came to America to build a better
life for themselves and their children.
Frisbee Club.
Tony’s parents chose to settle in Alexandria because
of its impressive public school opportunities. Tony
entered Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and
Technology and embraced the opportunity to
experience how science can be an integral part of
learning, arriving an hour early most days.
“Science was a big part of everything we did” at
Cora Kelly, says Tony, and helped to shape his
interest in the sciences. Tony also began to develop his leadership skills and was elected Student
Council President in the sixth grade. Tony further
developed his engineering interest during middle
school, serving as a Cadet with the Civil Air Patrol
for three years. At T.C., he was a member of the
National Honor Society and served as Treasurer
of his Junior Class and Secretary of the Key Club.
Tony was a member of the wrestling, swim and
crew teams, and a member of T.C.’s Ultimate
With the support of the Scholarship Fund, Tony earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1996 from Boston
University. In 2004, he combined his mechanical engineering and business skills to launch his own company,
Titan Semiconductor Tool, acknowledging his alumni allegiance to T.C. Williams. Weathering the “tech bubble
bust,” Tony’s company is poised to become a “titan” in its field.
Married to his college sweetheart, Laura, Tony has two children, Jackson, 3, and Davin, 1. Although he lives in
Orange County, California, Tony still thinks of Alexandria as home. He remains grateful and committed to the
Scholarship Fund. “I always give back to T.C. Williams and the Scholarship Fund. The Fund gave an
opportunity to a kid who wouldn’t necessarily be able to afford college. Without that scholarship, I wouldn’t be
here today doing what I’m doing.”

Our 2009 Telethon
A Splendid Fabulous Affair! – Our 24th Anniversary Spring Gala
• Even small gifts, when there are enough of them, can make a huge difference. The smallest gift was
$3, the largest was $6,000. Together, more than 800 donors raised $100,000 to support the General
Fund.
• The Parents Challenge topped the total board with over $25,000 in pledges
• Generously sponsored by Comcast, the Telethon is made possible by the work of scores of volunteers
including TC Williams-TV production students who donate their professional services behind the
camera and in the control room.
• The ACPS staff met the challenge of an anonymous donor who offered a $6,000 matching challenge
– resulting in over $12,000 to support deserving students.
• A team of fabulous volunteers planned an incredible evening for over 500 guests. Who ever
thought raising money for scholarships could be so much fun?
• Toyota Motors generously donated a fully-loaded 2010 Toyota Prius for the Scholarship Fund’s
third annual car raffle
• New and exciting live auction topped 2009 and contributed to a Gala net income over $300,000
• All proceeds from the Gala support the General Fund that awards scholarships to need-based T.C.
Williams graduates who demonstrate the ability, commitment and desire to pursue higher education
