Activity Report - United Fund for Belgium
for Belgium a.s.b.l. / v.z.w. Buildings Bonds of Solidarity www.ufb.be A ctivity Report Campaign 2012 - 2013 Editorial For over 40 years now, United Fund for Belgium has been helping underprivileged persons in every part of our country. The key characteristics of our action are: volunteers who give their time and the corporations that help us in kind, and, on the other hand, by resorting to alternative ways to cover these expenses, including: an endowment fund the proceeds of which help cover part of the costs; the organization of some events; and the receipt of certain donations made by friends of UFB for this specific purpose. To our knowledge, this 100% pass-through is unique in Belgium and we know from our donors that it is a very important factor in their decision to help those in need through UFB. E very euro that we collect through our fundraising campaign is redistributed to the social organizations we help (100% pass-through). We collect funds from more than 100 different companies and many individuals None of it is used to finance our own costs. every year, and their continued generosity in the midst of this long and painful We support social organizations by financing specific projects which economic crisis, which has been hitting disproportionally the most vulnerable provide value to them and the persons they help, focusing in particular on: people in Belgium, has been heartening. • child welfare • support of handicapped children and adults, • relief of poverty, and • social integration and job training of vulnerable persons. We finance projects from all regions and provinces in Belgium in a balanced way, based on a rigorous review of each association and project, with at least one of the members of our Allocations Committee visiting every association prior to approval of any funding to it. We disburse the funds on the basis of invoices for work done by the association, which helps make sure the financial help is used as had been anticipated. This helps all of us, because our donors know they can trust the way in which their donations are used. We help different associations every year (associations must, as a rule, wait 3 years to request our help again). This means that we know a large number of social organizations in Belgium and they know us, too. We have built mutual trust. We try to help them in a way that maximizes the benefits to them and those they support painstakingly every day of the year. Thank you - YOU DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE I want to pay tribute to the great values of these corporate and individual donors, who have not retreated even as they sometimes faced their own budgetary constraints. Thanks to this generosity, we will be able to finance over 80 projects this past year for an amount of about €710,000. Several of these projects are illustrated in this activity report or on our website and I encourage you to read about them, because they are the very reason for UFB’s existence. You can be proud about the role you have played in making them a reality. This is what makes UFB unique. Whether you are a social organization supported by UFB, one of UFB’s loyal donors, a volunteer who dedicates time to help us, or a member of the small but fantastic team that makes UFB work, you are all part of something really special. And I want to thank you sincerely for it, on behalf of all those whose lives you have helped change for the better. Thank you for the difference you have been making. Let’s work together to do even better this coming year. How are we are able to pass through all of the donations from the campaign? Japan Tobacco International (JTI) is one of the largest tobacco manufacturers worldwide producing and marketing world-renowned brands such as Camel and Winston. We are a global investments company dedicated to helping its clients manage and service their financial assets throughout the investment lifecycle. hat is your company’s vision on Corporate W Social Responsibility? hat is your company’s vision on Corporate W Social Responsibility? When conducting our business, we try to do something back for the local community we operate in. We want to do this in a way that is voluntary and outside of our commercial operations. Our Philanthropy policy is based upon two main pillars: to help the less privileged in our society and to support the Arts. Through UFB, we can bring our employees in touch with organizations that need our help. Corporate Social Responsibility is crucial to how we fulfill our role as a major global financial institution. At BNY Mellon, we are invested in our people, market integrity and our world. Our clients trust us every day with their investments, and we depend on our talented and diverse workforce to meet client needs with the highest standards of excellence and integrity. That’s why it’s important that we build an inclusive and supportive environment where our people are empowered to contribute and succeed. Together, we can contribute to the resiliency of global markets and solutions for some of the world’s most pressing issues, building healthy economies and sustainable communities over time. ow does UFB fit in this CSR vision, and how H do you support UFB? Our philanthropic activities aim to improve people’s lives by supporting local organizations who try to help underprivileged people. This often includes partnering with organizations such as UFB, with whom we support several charities throughout Belgium. Each charity has an internal Philanthropic Ambassador, a JTI employee who serves as coordinator with the project and looks into the needs of its association. ow do you make this support visible within H your company? If so, how? Since 2009, we have also a global volunteering policy in force. We believe that it’s very important that our members of staff make their own personal contribution to society by working as volunteers. Volunteering also helps to enhance the personal development in terms of teamwork and leadership. This is why we are encouraging our members of staff, and we are giving them the opportunity, to work during their working hours as volunteers for local charities. ow does UFB fit in this CSR vision, and how H do you support UFB? We support UFB through a yearly financial contribution. What is the activity of your company? Beobank is a retail bank. hat is your company’s vision on Corporate W Social Responsibility? It’s a business’ responsibility to be an active social member in the community. We think that each company has the social responsibility to play a role in helping the charities in a way or another. We think this really creates value from which everyone can benefit. ow does UFB fit in this CSR vision, and how H do you support UFB? UFB is our selected partner for our CSR program. We support UFB both financially (a regular company donation and we also match the donations made by the staff) and logistically (providing meeting rooms). Also, our staff can apply for one day voluntary work per year in a charity selected by UFB. ow do you make this support visible within H your company? If so, how? Yes, via internal communications and postings on our Intranet. ow do you make this support visible within H your company? If so, how? No, because we put the emphasis on our corporate Community Partnership program, by which we directly support five local associations both financially and through our employees’ Personal Volunteering Time contribution.
