Dr. Hans-Georg Küppers
There are several music conferences in German-speaking countries; however, up
until now there has not been a forum devoted especially to classical music in all
of its manifestations, from the traditional forms of past centuries to contemporary
and experimental forms. As the director of the Department of Arts and Culture
of the City of Munich, I appreciate, naturally, that a new music conference called
Classical:NEXT has been initiated here in our city.
Many renowned participants contribute to Munich‘s reputation as a metropolis
of first-class classical music: of the seven professional orchestras in our city, four
are internationally ranked among the best – from the Münchner Philharmoniker
to the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Bayerische
Staatsorchester to the Münchener Kammerorchester. The Staatsoper and the
ARD International Music Competition are famous across the globe. The top-class
spectrum of concerts is supplemented by, among others, private organizations
and the Bayerischer Rundfunk. Special mention in the area of contemporary
classical music should be given in particular to the international music theater
festival Munich Biennale and the musica viva. The Hochschule für Musik und
Theater is one of the most venerable educational institutions, and the music
library at the Gasteig Cultural Center is the largest public institute of its kind in
Germany. And the more than 70 labels with offices in Munich and the surrounding
area make an essential contribution with their publications to the development
and presence of new musical trends here.
Dear visitors to the music conference, perhaps you will also find the time, in
addition to your networking activities, to enjoy the multifaceted cultural life in
our city. I would especially recommend the two evening events Classical Next Level
in the clubs Harry Klein and Bob Beaman.

Foreword
“New Brooms Sweep Best”
We proudly present three
new productions starring
CECILIA BARTOLI
”New brooms sweep best“ an old proverb says. And no doubt about it: against the
background of dramatically changing markets, rapid technological development,
ever-changing production conditions and shifting reception of classical music,
there is a clear need for us to do our own tidying up and renovation work, despite
the “spring cleaning” already taking place throughout the industry.
Dr. Rainer Kahleyss
Editor and distributor
www.class-germany.de
Classical labels, producers, sound engineers, distributors and technology
partners have teamed up to form CLASS – the Association for Classical
Independents. Together with artists, journalists, agencies and classical enthusiasts,
we‘ve recognised this need. We‘ve long been on the lookout for new tools to
complete the task.
We are therefore very pleased to have found the tireless team of WOMEX and
the interested partners from the city of Munich that provide not only new brooms,
but also the rooms. The cultural spaces of Gasteig are a most appropriate location
for sweeping and tending to even the most isolated and hard-to-reach niches of
classical‘s varied structure.

Within these few days we will know exactly how much this new model is
already motivating international dialogue. Classical:NEXT is young, brisk, unused –
the new design is malleable and versatile. Promised!
CLASS e. V. wishes Classical:NEXT all the very best on the way to a richlydeserved success – as a meeting place, a marketplace of ideas, as a powerful
forum, as an experimental showcase. And we have no doubt: Classical:NEXT
will be the force which will stir up plenty of dust on the exciting path to the
classical music market of the future.

To bring these diverse scenes together, the CLASS Association of Classical
Independents in Germany approached piranha womex, for over 17 years a music
industry networking facilitator and producer of WOMEX – the world music expo,
one of the leading music trade fairs in Europe. The Department of Arts and Culture
of the City of Munich was enthusiastic and supportive of the concept from the
very start. To our initiating partner CLASS, the Department of Arts and Culture
of the City of Munich, as well as to our host venue, Gasteig, we express our
gratitude. Thank you for your support and guidance. Classical:NEXT could not
have happened without you!
The aim of Classical:NEXT is to gather all elements of the wide, multifarious
world of classical together under one roof. All sectors, all epochs, all approaches.
These combined forces have boundless potential to create powerful synergy.

Welcome to the first Classical:NEXT. This new international professionals forum
for classical and art music was born of necessity. Up to now, the classical
music community has been fragmented: early or contemporary; traditional
or experimental; live or recorded; institutions, associations or independent
individuals. These groupings meet separately at their own conferences or at
events dedicated to a particular musical approach or era. The need for an event
dedicated to the entire community has become increasingly apparent.
United, we can become a force for positive energy and evolution:
celebrating the past, working in the present, looking to the future.

Top tips for getting around and eating out in the Classical:NEXT host city
GETTING AROUND
Public Transport in Munich
The best way of getting around in Munich is to use
the public transport system, MVV. If you want to travel
within Germany you can use the Deutsche Bahn. The
MVV includes buses, trams, the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn,
and you can use all elements of public transport with
the same ticket. You can buy individual, group, day
and weekly tickets. Public transport operates with a
limited service from 2am to 5am. Additionally, there
are nightbuses and night trams that run at intervals of
about 30 minutes all night on Fridays and Saturdays.
The MVV area is divided into several zones: one in the
center and three in the outskirts. A day ticket is worth
buying if you plan to take more than two trips on the
same day. All tickets, except for weekly tickets, must be
stamped to be valid. Stamping machines are found at
the entrance to the S-Bahn or U-Bahn platforms, and
inside buses and trams.

transport in Munich please visit the following site:

Bella Musica is one of the oldest music and radioplay production companies in Germany, as well as a
recording company and publishing house. Bella Musica
offers thousands of titles from all areas of music: German
and international folk, classical, instrumental, jazz, pop,
oldies, country and world music, as well as songs and
radio plays for children. In the early 1990s the Antes
Edition was founded as a supplier of top-quality serious
music on CD and in print. Composers and performing
artists were thus offered a stimulatingly creative forum
for classical music.
Hänssler Classic is an independent label for classical
music, founded more than 40 years ago. With some
50 new releases a year, our catalogue includes over 800
recordings on CD, SACD and DVD. Numerous national
and international awards illustrate our worldwide
recognition. Our focus is on world class interpretation
of chamber music, orchestral or choir music as well
as outstanding soloists. Hänssler Classic produced
the first ever complete Bach edition, recorded under
the direction of Helmuth Rilling.
Since 2000, Hänssler Classic has worked in cooperation
with the SWR, one of Germany’s largest broadcasting
networks. Three great orchestras, a world-class vocal
ensemble and one of Europe’s most swinging big
bands are on SWR music! Our Archiv series presents
rare concert recordings and recitals from the 20th
century’s greatest artists – Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau,
Elisabeth Grümmer, Leopold Stokowski, Géza Anda,
Ida Händel and many more.
This forum has been expanded through Bella Musica’s
acquisition of the prestigious Throfon label. During
its more than 35-year history, Throfon has built up a
distinguished catalogue that has won many prizes,
including several Echo Awards.

The Munich based label Farao Classics, founded in
1995, stands for exceptional and multi-award winning
recordings of opera, symphonic and chamber music.
Schott Music & Media is a company within the
Schott Music group. At Classical:NEXT, it presents
the division Wergo.
The label was initiated by professional musicians with
the aim of creating outstanding recordings with a
unique and distinctive artistic personality.
For half a century the Wergo label has been
synonymous with contemporary music. Its repertoire
of more than 600 CDs, which have won many awards
and prizes, is a major record collection of 20th- and
21st-century music, portraying almost all established
contemporary composers – from Stockhausen and
Boulez to Henze, Hindemith, Cage, Nancarrow, Reich,
Brown, Ustvolskaya and Xenakis, and more recent
generations of composers.
Artists and ensembles like Enoch zu Guttenberg,
Kent Nagano, Zubin Mehta, Ivor Bolton, Anja Harteros,
Waltraud Meier, and the Bavarian State Opera rely on
the highly acclaimed quality of the label, which has
resulted in steady partnerships.
The label‘s productions stand out not only due to
excellent recording technology and high-quality
manufacturing, but also due to informative texts by

Rondeau Production GmbH – a successful label from
Leipzig, the home-town of Bach – has established
itself over the the past few years as a specialist for
artistically and technically high-class recordings
of sacred vocal music. The label’s extraordinarily
productive cooperation with world-renowned choirs,
along with its corporate strategy that is geared towards
the highest standards, have generated a unique CD
catalogue.
The catalogue encompasses famous ensembles such
as St Thomas’ Boys Choir Leipzig or the Windsbacher
Knabenchor. The label also has a fruitful cooperation
with choirs from Hanover, which is demonstrated by
the label’s two Echo Klassik awards in 2006 and 2010.
Another highlight in the label’s repertoire includes a
ten-part CD series with recordings of Johann Sebastian
Bach’s cantatas. These are performed by St Thomas’
Boys Choir Leipzig and the Gewandhausorchester
under the baton of Georg Christoph Biller. The series
will be published in honor of St Thomas’ Boys Choir’s
800th anniversary.

New Directions – Norrbotten Music Center – is an
initiative launched by Norrbottensmusiken/Norrbotten
county council, Piteå municipality with development
funding from the Swedish National Council for Cultural
Affairs. It is the product of a partnership between
New Directions, the Luleå University of Technology/
KKL, and Studio Acusticum, merging music, education,
technology and research. This is a creative environment
for music to grow and flourish. Collaborations are
encouraged, providing opportunities for the crossfertilisation of different artistic media. The center
is envisaged as an international platform for music
creators, musicians, students, researchers.
It offers the latest advances in sound, acoustic research
and a state-of-the-art concert hall. The public can
access several modern concert rooms with the latest
technology, and facilities for transmitting live broadcasts
via a direct link from the Acusticum area (Digital Live
Arena).
Founded in 1984, Divox set off in 1990 with the vision,
to discover and promote emerging chamber music
artists and to bring outstanding music into the world.
We started to release selected recordings in audiophile
quality with young and talented musicians from all
over the world while contributing at the same time to
the enlargement of chamber music repertory.
Every new release is a ”déclaration d‘amour”, to specific
aspects of chamber music as well to the artists. The
state-of-the-art recording technique underlines our
commitment to the artists and their interpretations.
With six to eight recordings released a year, every
CD/SACD/BD stands for mindfulness and exceptional
qualities of the presented artist and the repertoire.
Since 2002 Divox has contributed strongly to develop
the three-dimensional music reproduction System
AUROPHONIE (www.auro-3d.com), formerly 2+2+2.
Discover the passion of chamber music and share it!
Several professional ensembles are associated with the
center, including Norrbotten NEO, Norrbotten Big Band
and Piteå Chamber Opera, as well as youth initiatives
such as the Arctic Light girls’ choir. Collaborations
include Erik Westberg Vocal Ensemble, which is affiliated
with the university. This autumn sees the official
opening of the Acusticum studio’s new concert house

“Music to carress your soul”
Johannes R. Köhler
If there are still classic-romantic composers nowadays,
then Johannes R. Köhler is one of them. His music is not
constructed, but consists of melodies and emotions
which take a musical form. With the large velvety string
orchestral sound of the Munich Symphonic Orchestra,
he uses these emotions in his “music to be caressed by”.
This musical language of the soul opens up a whole
new world of sensation for the listener. The music is
used successfully in many areas of medical therapy
and it is a “closely sounding medicine” for the soul –
if you can find no rest – if you are depressed about
your illness – if you can not cope with your grief – if
you are looking for security – if you are sickened by
your environment – if you can not sleep – if you are
burdened by stress – if you´re annoyed when driving –
if you want to reassure your children – if you are in love
– if you just do not know how you should carry on…
and many others.

spiritual harmony, music that radiates total peace,
music that calms and smoothes your tortured soul,
just as Köhler’s “music to be caressed by” does.

Biographies
There is a short biography of each Classical:NEXT
conference speaker and mentor at the very end
of this chapter.
All Classical:NEXT conference rooms are
at Gasteig:
Throughout history, classical music has been revitalized
by the sounds and techniques of folk and popular
music. In Eastern Europe, klezmer (Yiddish) and
lautar (Roma) urban professional musicians created
a music of unmatched virtuosity and nuance that
inspired composers from Liszt, Bartok, Kodaly and
Enescu to Golijov and Zorn. But for many audiences,
performers and composers today, the original sources
of inspiration are often unknown – and fascinating to
discover. The Other Europeans, born of an EU-funded
music ethnography project, is dedicated to uncovering
these sources and renewing a centuries-old musical
partnership that was cut short by the Holocaust. This
music opens new horizons for audiences and musicians
alike, exemplifying the ongoing creative fermentation
between classical, folk and popular music. Dr. Alan Bern,
creator and artistic director of The Other Europeans,
will lecture on the subject while providing musical
examples.

The present and future of classical music
journalism and media
Chaired by Carsten Dürer (Germany),
Editor in Chief, PIANONews & ENSEMBLE
with Oliver Condy (UK),
Editor, BBC Music Magazine;
Jessica Duchen (UK),
Music journalist, The Independent
Journalism and the media have undergone radical
changes in recent years and will continue to do so
in the future. What is the current situation? What can
we expect from classical music journalists at a time
when the landscape has shifted towards PR-media
and Internet platforms? These are vital questions
which require answers. Otherwise we risk losing the
most important resource we have: our listeners, who
also constitute the readership for classical music
publications.

For many people, contemporary music evokes atonal,
unstructured sounds that are difficult to listen to or
reserved for exclusive circles. Yet the same musical
content often appears in film scores which mix a
wide variety of styles and genres. This session outlines
possible ways to push contemporary music forward –
with film music as a vehicle – to find a wider audience.
It also explores whether such an approach is attractive
to concert halls and promoters and whether it does
justice to the contemporary music scene overall.

What is the future for music venues?
Presented by Rob Harris (UK),
Director, Arup, Arts & Culture Business Leader, UKMEA
Music has always been a phenomenon associated with
communities of socially and aesthetically like-minded
people. In order to adapt to rapid changes in society,
taste, and technology, the classical music industry needs
to nourish dynamic and passionate communities around
the art form. This session addresses the opportunities
and challenges in community-building as ushered in
by new technologies such as social networking and
crowd-funding websites like Kickstarter.com. In addition
to crowd-funding, we will discuss the importance of
open formats, audience development and transnational
networks (social media). Join us to learn about practical
examples, thought-provoking theories, and experience
inspiring showcases based on the speakers’ successful
experiences with the PODIUM Festival (Steven Walter)
and “Open Goldberg Variations” (Robert Douglass).
Can we afford more of the kinds of music venues we
have built in the past? What is sustainable fiscally,
environmentally and programmatically? If we can afford
them, will they attract audiences (and performers) and
provide the ever-evolving experiences that people
expect? Concentrating on the next generation of
concert attendees, this talk will mainly examine the
physical facilities and buildings that we need and how
these relate to a comprehensive (physical and digital)
experience. Rob will suggest that the need for such an
experience is not primarily passive, as it is at present,
but rather interactive and participatory.

In 2011, an EU Directive (EU Directive 2011/77/EU)
extended the copyright terms for performers and
producers of recordings for all license agreements,
including buy-outs. Under this new legislation, all
recordings which are still protected on 1st November
2013 will receive an additional 20 years of copyright
protection. The conference will debate the
consequences and implications of this copyright
extension for composers and labels, drawing on
the perspectives of a composer, a lawyer and a
label representative. It will explore how performers
– or their beneficiaries – and record companies should
deal with the situation and how it may transfer to
EU legislation.

Leveraging Internet and social media to engage new audiences for cultural institutions
Chaired by Dr. Martin Dehli (Germany),
Head of Department Corporate Clients, actori
with Christopher Gruits (USA),
Director of e-Strategy, Carnegie Hall New York;
Anna Kleeblatt (Germany),
Head of Sales & Marketing, Bavarian State Opera Munich
Internet technology and social media offer new
horizons for music and performing arts: a ”Digital
Concert Hall“ can reach audiences far beyond a single
venue; interactive ticketing systems provide more
convenient access for concertgoers; mobile apps can
place marketing messages easily within the private
sphere of a possible target audience. On the other
hand, digitalization could be perceived as a threat to
the unique live experience of a performance on stage,
and some critics are already foreseeing the end of
performing arts in an age of digital reproduction.
Two case studies exemplify the opportunities and risks
of Internet technologies and social media for cultural
institutions: Anna Kleeblatt, Head of Sales and Marketing
at the Bavarian State Opera, will describe activities in
direct marketing and social media at a leading opera
house; Christopher Gruits, Director of e-Strategy at
Carnegie Hall, will illustrate the digital content strategies
of one of the world’s most prominent concert halls.

James Jolly (UK),
Editor in Chief, Gramophone
Chaired by Matthias Schneider (Germany),
Music Manager, schneider+ music management and consulting
with Kai-Michael Hartig (Germany),
Head of Culture Department, Körber-Foundation, Hamburg;
Christian Kellersmann (Germany),
Managing Director of Classics & Jazz,
Universal Music Classics & Jazz
Classical music is increasingly conquering new venues,
moving beyond traditional locations to alternative
venues such as bars and clubs, attracting younger
audiences in the process. In turn, electronic musicians
have increasingly penetrated classical concert halls.
The cross-fertilization of classical and electronic music
can be found in event series such as the Yellow Lounge
or recorded music series such as Recomposed, initiated
by Deutsche Grammophon’s Christian Kellersmann.
The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg’s concert series ePhil,
supported by the cultural department of the KörberStiftung under Kai-Michael Hartig, represents yet
another example. Classic goes club – just a flash in the
pan or a foretaste of the future? What new opportunities
does the opening of the classical world bring for the
music market as well as for composers and musicians?
Christian Kellersmann and Kai-Michael Hartig will
discuss the issue with music agent Matthias Schneider.
In the past three or four decades the classical music
landscape has shifted dramatically. The independent
sector is strong, dynamic and full of imagination,
and those qualities are strengthening every year. The
major companies, often indebted to capital venture
companies and boards who are no longer seeing the
strong return from their pop and rock acts, are having
to embrace a very different business model, and
because of their relative size lack the nimbleness of their
independent competitors. Are we now living in a world
where the two industries have diverged to such an
extent that they no longer operate in the same field?

organizations that document and promote the music
of their country, region or a certain musical field.
These Music Information Centers play a key role in the
circulation of artists and dissemination of artistic works
both nationally and internationally. IAMIC as a platform
and a knowledge hub brings Music Information Centers
worldwide together. The idea behind the network
is not only to provide an international context for its
members, but also to encourage and enhance access to
information, stimulate exchanges of ideas, experiences
and best practice, as well as to facilitate joint projects.
One of these projects, created and lead by eleven
Music Information Centers in partnership with IAMIC,
is the MINSTREL project (MusIc Network Supporting

… was the theme more than ten years ago when MDG
offerd their first 2+2+2 recordings, a three-dimensional
way for natural-sounding music reproduction using
the six channels of the current media DVD and SACD
that are still working at their best. The overall benefit:
the music lover is no longer fixed to one place in the
listening room: you can be absolutely free and move
within your private concert hall, chamber music room
or cathedral... Up to now, film industries have used
5.1 Surround Sound that physically reproduces a two
dimensional sound image. It definitely does a good
job, but in one place only: the so-called ”sweet spot“.
Now film industries are about to move into threedimensional film and sound reproduction with up to
10.2 channels or more. Will this be the future for music
reproduction at home? MDG needs only one step to
reach the sound of the near future. With eight channels
only that can simply be provided by Blue-ray or in
digital download. So complete the 2+2+2 System with
another pair of elevated rear loudspeakers and the result
is 2222+ Recording. Come, listen, hear and discuss the
difference in this presentation.

The Waldbühne in Berlin, one of the most stunning
outdoor amphitheatres in Europe, is the home of the
Berliner Philarmonic‘s summer concerts. One of the
highlights in the history of these Waldbühne concerts
was undoubtedly the appearance of the charismatic
American soprano Renée Fleming, who brought
her soft-toned but richly coloured voice to this
Night of Love.
Renée Fleming‘s incomparable charisma as a singer
takes its full effect only when combined with the
facial expressions of the great diva, captured here

A ballet from real life by Jo Strømgren and Stein-Roger
Bull. In a big apartment in Frogner, Oslo, Norway, a
couple argues and fights about their relationship.
Boxes with separate belongings have already been
outside the flat. Their neighbour is a lonesome pianist,
annoyed by the couple’s endless quarrels. He plays the
piano, Leos Janáček’s In the Mists. The sound penetrates
through the walls. Slowly, the couple unconsciously
succumbs to the influence of the music and ends up
ceasing to fight and resolving their argument, and
maybe unpacking the boxes again.

In the Mists
The concert begins. The music is sublime. Not even
a pin would dare drop. Suddenly, a cell phone rings
and the madness starts. The pianist loses his hand;
the violinist, while tuning, falls asleep and later wakes
up in the middle of a motorway, transformed into a
”River Dancer“. When the pianist returns, the piano is
locked, telling him to insert his credit card. These and
many other ”nightmares” unfold before audiences‘ eyes.
A Little Nightmare Music is a unique show, full of
virtuosity, enchanting music and zany, outrageous
humour. The two extraordinary masters of humour
Aleksey Igudesman and Hyung-ki Joo will mislead you

Rarely has a Mozart opera seria leapt to life with
such intensity and power. And much of its rousing,
bounding spirit is due to Vesselina Kasarova, one of
the greatest mezzos of our time. As Sesto she clearly
dominates the stage, infusing each expression and
gesture, every note and coloratura, with breath-taking
vitality. Kasarova is surrounded by so many high-caliber
colleagues that the result is a feast for the ears and the
eyes. As the scheming Vitellia, Eva Mei lets not only the
ambitiousness of a proud princess but also the stinging
humiliation of a wronged woman reverberate in her
coloraturas. Jonas Kaufmann endows his sonorous
Tito with depth and reflectiveness. Director Jonathan
Miller focuses almost exclusively on the inner life of the
characters, a concept reinforced by the subtle musical
accompaniment of conductor Franz Welser-Möst.

Opening: Wednesday
19:00 – 22:00, Carl-Orff-Saal
Tradition and innovation – two halves which together make the whole
Closing: Saturday
12:00 – 14:00, Black Box
The opening and closing events of the debut edition of
Classical:NEXT reflect the wide scope of what classical
music can be today. In analogy to the forum’s name,
the opening will present a program commemorating
the long and hallowed tradition of Western art music
– the conditio sine qua non of “Classical” – while the
closing will place emphasis on the “NEXT” generation of
classical music making with modern works and novel
approaches.
Florian Uhlig, described by the Sunday Tribune as an
“involved, daring and high-voltage pianist” interprets
short works by two of the undisputed greats of the
romantic era, Schumann and Beethoven. In addition,
Dutch mezzo-soprano Barbara Kozelj and Swiss
pianist Jan Schultsz are to perform selections from
the song cycle Sanges-Frühling by Swiss composer
Joseph Joachim Raff, a prolific yet often overlooked
contemporary of Liszt and Schumann.
The opening’s repertoire hence ranges from baroque
to late romantic, presented in the traditional manner:
using voice or acoustic instrument, playing from a
concert hall stage directly to a live audience – a timeproven method for conveying a musical message to the
public. Today however, the venerated musical tradition
of classical takes on a new, additional role: its refined
and delicate sound offers a space and emphasizes the
importance of a virtue often marginalized nowadays –
sincere and focused listening.
The opening concert also commemorates two
groups which have been instrumental in bringing
the initiative that is Classical:NEXT to life: CLASS, the
Association for Classical Independents in Germany
and our initiating partners, and Naxos, who signed
on to this fledgling project at the outset, entrusting
Classical:NEXT with their 25th anniversary, encouraging
their international network to come to Munich.
On Wednesday, Tianwa Yang, born in Beijing, based
in Germany and described by the American Record Guide
as “an unquestioned master of the violin”, will perform a
sonata by the Belgian “King of the Violin” Eugène Ysaÿe.
Antonio Soler and J. S. Bach will come from pianist Eldar
Nebolsin, born in Uzbekistan, trained in Madrid and
called the “Sviatoslav Richter” of his generation.
The closing concert conjures up the second half
of this forum’s name, ”NEXT“, a word which looks to
innovation and to what is yet to come. Our host city
of Munich is also represented on the program with
two performances. The concert opens with works
from an artist placed inarguably at the forefront of the
20th century avant-garde, John Cage, who has been
the center of attention at numerous events in this,
the centennial year of his birth. These are performed
by a professor of the University for Music and Theater
in Munich, Moritz Eggert, a man of many job titles
including composer, pianist, conductor, and blogger.
102
The Orchester Jakobsplatz München is a young
ensemble founded in 2005 by a young conductor,
Daniel Grossmann. Musicians from more than
twenty countries currently play in the orchestra. The
programming focuses on rarely played works by Jewish
composers combined with music of the 20th and 21st
centuries. For the Classical:NEXT closing concert, they
present a short work by Ernst Krenek, a 20th century
composer of myriad styles and methods such as late
romantic, jazz, atonality and serialism.
of the classical music record industry will be examined
by James Jolly, Editor in Chief of Gramophone, a leading
publication which, since 1923, has been devoted to the
review of classical music recordings.
An appropriately named group will bring the
musical offerings of the debut edition of Classical:NEXT
to a close, the Quartet New Generation. These four
young women take recorder performance to previously
unexplored territories, incorporating and adapting
influences from early and contemporary music as
well as popular genres into programs delivered with
approachability and élan. On Saturday, 2 June, they’ll
take the listeners on a contemporary classical tasting
tour with a selection of modern delights, each short
and sweet.

Classical:NEXT thus symbolize the duality of preser
vation and renaissance, both sides of which are crucial
to the future of classical music. Such reconciliation is a
goal not only to be reached on stage. As the impulse for
Classical:NEXT was given by CLASS – the Association
for Classical Independents, the closing concert‘s keynote
speech offers a highly fitting topic – the current state

Classical:NEXT showcase artists will present themselves
to an international, professional audience in a series
of short live performances on 31 May and 1 June in
the Carl-Orff-Saal concert hall. Each showcase act will
deliver insights into their artistic portfolio within a
maximum of 30 minutes. The live showcase artists and
ensembles have been selected by an independent jury
from numerous proposals for their outstanding quality,
new ideas, and often unusual approaches.
Meet the Artists Receptions
The jury selection offers a wide range of high-quality
artists: from well-kept secrets to rising stars, from early to
contemporary, traditional to experimental. There will be
compositional adventures – including the artists‘ own
compositions – as well as courageous arrangements or
alterations of well-known masterpieces. Improvisation
provides a basis for some of the acts, while others focus
on sheet music paired with digital technologies, or –
quite the contrary – blend the written classical with oral
traditions. While the approaches and the material may
differ, all 2012 showcases handle the classical repertoire
with self-assurance and respect.

chant into dialogue with contemporary forms of
expression. The ensemble, founded in 1978 by the
13-year-old Jean-Claude Acquaviva, has collaborated
in film music, children operas, theater works and, most
recently, in choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui at
the Théâtre de la Monnaie (Opernwelt’s 2011 “Opera
House of the Year”). The group created its own requiem,
Di Corsica Riposu, on commission from the Festival de
Saint-Denis in 2004, releasing the work on its fourteenth
album. Acquaviva describes the music as “singing about
death in order to better celebrate life.”
A Filetta has also entered ambitious cross-cultural
exchanges, collaborating with the Japanese percussion
ensemble, Kodo.

Whether in the interlocking textures of Ligeti or the
cascading melodies of Bach, the woodwind quintet
Carion brings a fresh concept to chamber music
performance. Playing from memory in unusual
formations with a slightly theatrical approach, the
Danish ensemble seeks to defy convention and make
classical repertoire more appealing for a wider audience.
“What at first appears to be an extra ingredient in
concocting an event turns out to be a well-rounded
concept,” wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung. The ensemble,
founded in 2002, has worked with everyone from
the legendary flutist Sir James Galway to the DJ and
producer Bjørn Svin, known for his experimental
electronic dance music. Carion has won prizes at
chamber music competitions in Denmark, Italy
and Japan.

The Dutch pianist Daria van den Bercken has won
attention not only for her award-winning performances
in European concert halls but for her innovative
approaches to audience development, documented
on vimeo.com. In February, she invited total strangers
from around her neighborhood to attend a recital
of keyboard works by Georg Frederic Handel at her
Amsterdam apartment. Her fleet fingers and musical
intensity evoke anything but a casual musical get
together. Her first online video Handel hits the road!
features van den Bercken performing on a small
grand piano as it is towed through the streets by car.
A girl with pigtails smiles in the background, while an
older man starts gesturing outside a bar as if about to
conduct. “Handel’s music has an urgency that especially
fits this day and age,” says the pianist in the video.
“I want everyone to hear and get to know this music.”

Eldar Nebolsin has been called the Sviatoslav Richter of
his generation since winning a prize in the legendary
pianist’s name at Moscow’s first International Piano
Competition in 2005. His second album on Naxos
featuring Liszt’s First and Second Piano Concertos
and the Totentanz with the Liverpool Philharmonic
under Vassily Petrenko occupied the top place on the
label’s best-selling digital platform for six consecutive
months. He most recently released an album of works
by Schubert, and Brahms’ piano quartets are to follow.
Nebolsin, an Uzbekistan native, has performed with
orchestras throughout Europe and the U.S. under
conductors such as Ricardo Chailly, Charles Dutoit, and
Leonard Slatkin. A former student of Dmitri Bashkirov
in Madrid, he has stayed in the Spanish city to serve on

Oral tradition, while often associated with non-Western
forms of expression, has inspired many innovations in
classical music. One need only look to the field work
of Béla Bartók or the Basque rhythms that drive the
scores of Maurice Ravel. Ensemble Variances, founded
by pianist-composer Thierry Pécou in 2010, creates a
platform to carry this tradition into the 21st century,
performing original compositions that blend avantgarde experimentalism with the native sounds of
cultures from Latin America to the Caribbean. Pécou
and his ensemble recently collaborated with Mexican
composers for the premiere of Mexico se pone de fiesta at
the Opéra de Rouen and will next unveil a premiere with
the American composer Lisa Bielawa. The ensemble has
also explored dialogue with the visual arts, collaborating
with the painter Rodrigue Glombard.

Baroque music has enjoyed a comeback in recent
decades, thanks to quality ensembles founded
by conductors such as William Christie, Nikolaus

Secret has entered as a new potential player on
the scene since winning the Early Music Network
International Young Artists’ Competition in York, England
in 2007. The group’s debut album Musique pour Mazarin!
Qui le coeur at tout, featuring music by 17th century
composers such as Rossi and Charpentier, was praised
by The Independent as “a confident and attractively
programmed recording.” Le Jardin Secret has since
released a musical homage to the Habsburg imperial
court entitled Auf Wiener Art. The ensemble has also
created original programs such as Orpheus through

The Goldberg Variations, one of J.S. Bach’s most
ambitious keyboard works, has been transcribed
for everything from guitar to jazz trio. Now it is about
to meet the next frontier: Internet technology. The
Open Goldberg Variations Project, launched by musician
and web scholar Robert Douglass with his wife, the
German-Japanese pianist Kimiko Ishizaka, brings a
new album (recorded earlier this year on a Bösendorfer
grand piano) together with the open source notation
of Musescore.com. The sheet music sharing website
allows for sharing, embedding video, transposing and
more. Both the recording and the digital score, made
possible through crowd-funding, will be available on
the public domain. At Classical:NEXT, Douglass and

The Orchester Jakobsplatz München champions 20th
century and contemporary music with an emphasis on
composers of Jewish origin. The ensemble, founded in
2005 by Artistic Director Daniel Grossmann, includes
musicians from over 20 countries and has formed
partnerships with institutions such as the Bavarian
State Opera and Theater as well as Munich’s Jewish
Community Center. “The orchestra has successfully
positioned itself in the orchestra city of Munich with
new and Jewish music,” wrote the Neue Zürcher Zeitung
last year. In 2009, the group embarked on a tour of Israel
and released an album of works by the little-known
composer Paul Ben-Haim. The following season it
traveled through Moldavia, the Ukraine and Romania
with the violinist Tanja Becker-Bender. In June, the
orchestra will perform works by Hanns Eisler at Munich’s
Schauspielhaus.

Recorders aren’t the first instruments that come to
mind when one thinks of new music. Yet the Quartet

inspiring composers to conceive works for them. At

Salzburg, otherwise known as “Mozart city”, remains a
nexus of traditions one would more readily associate
with the 18th century. Yet in the right hands, the music
of this time remains as fresh and relevant as it was then.
The ensemble Salzburger Hofmusik, founded in 1991 by
Wolfgang Brunner, has dedicated itself to a court music
tradition that ranges from J.C. Bach to Schubert. The
group draws upon a flexible formation ranging from trio
to small orchestra, applying scholarly research about
performance practice to their interpretations on historic
instruments. Salzburger Hofmusik has toured Central
and Eastern Europe as well as Israel and Turkey, while
maintaining a prolific discography. “Salzburger Hofmusik
is more than capable of competing with period
instrument ensembles in Freiburg and Köln,” wrote
the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

While the saxophone might conjure up Charlie
Parker more easily than the classical concert hall, the
instrument’s importance in 20th century repertoire
from Claude Debussy to Paul Hindemith often goes
overlooked. The German trio Sax Allemande, formed in
1996, has set out to prove the instrument’s elegance
in a wide variety of repertoire. Blending soprano, alto
and bass saxophones, the group’s discography so far
includes arrangements of opera and ballet numbers, a
rendition of the Goldberg Variations, and a SchubertKagel project juxtaposing two seemingly disparate
musical worlds. The group recently won support from
the Siemens Foundation for a work it commissioned
from the Lithuanian composer Vykintas Baltakas. Sax
Allemande also has to its credit two consecutive Echo

the two string quartets by Sunleif Rasmussen, a native
of the Nordic Faroe Islands. Other albums include works
by Danes Anders Koppel and Paul von Klenau. Earlier
this season, Sjælland made an appearance at the ORF

Classical:NEXT video showcases are a new presentation
format which complements the live showcases. The
20-minute videos show recent projects of musicians,
ensembles or larger productions via live footage,
interviews or documentaries about the artistic content
and context.
The young violinist Tianwa Yang has been turning heads
towards her precocious career. This season includes
debut performances with ensembles such as the
Cleveland Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic and the
Deutsche Radio Philharmonie. A native of Beijing, she
recorded the Paganini caprices at the age of thirteen.
Her first Naxos album of works by Sarasate with the
Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra and Ernest Martínez
Izquierdo received the Pizzicato Supersonic Award
last year. Further upcoming releases include the solo
sonatas of Eugène Ysaÿe, Wolfgang Rihm’s Works for
violin and piano, Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, Manen’s
violin concerto and the remaining albums for an eightdisc set of Sarasate works. Yang is the recipient of the

The video showases are thus an ideal opportunity
to present large ensembles or staged productions
such as operas. At the same time, this format is
designed to enable artists, ensembles or productions
to present themselves when traveling or scheduling
issues make a live appearance impossible. Moreover,
the video showases are an appropriate way to present
work in progress to the professional community at
Classical:NEXT – be it a large, complex or unfinished
production. By combining the audio-visual element
with the onsite presence of one or several represen
tatives, the video showases allow ensembles and
productions, who would otherwise not be able to
perform, to make a professional and informative
impression at Classical:NEXT.

The video showases offer music distributors such
as concert promoters, labels and journalists a unique
opportunity to experience many performances in a
short amount of time. This format allows the gist of a
complex project to be grasped quickly and personal
contacts can be collected to deepen the exchange
afterwards.

A broad spectrum of presentations awaits our
delegates. Stylistically, they range from jazz and baroque
improvisations to modern electronic approaches. Some
presentations describe concerts in a special setting e.g.
pitch black, such as “Augustin Maurs – SOLO Bach Suites
Exhibited”. There will be sketches and documentations
of projects as well as videos that are art in themselves,
and some video showases that show that these two
aspects are not mutually exclusive.
All Classical:NEXT video showcases will be
screened at Gasteig:

SOLO – Bach Suites Exhibited, a performance installation
by cellist and composer Augustin Maurs, creates a
new listening context for Bach’s cello suites: they are
performed in pitch dark. This is unusual on more than
one level, as the six movements for unaccompanied
soloist are rarely performed all at once. Maurs, first
exposed to the world of Bach’s suites at age six through
recordings of Pablo Casals, hopes to distill the musical
experience to a purely acoustic one, a concept of
invisible sound. “Bach in the dark is an alternative to
the way classical music is otherwise visualized and
marketed,” he explains. Maurs has entered collaborations
with composers such as Mauricio Kagel and Helmut
Lachenmann, the choreographer Sasha Waltz and the
stage director Christoph Schlingensief.

Three video portraits open a view onto the composers
Jörg Widmann, Oliver Schneller, and Samir OdehTamimi. The works of Widmann have become
increasingly prominent in Germany and beyond.
The Bavarian State Opera premieres his opera Babylon
next season. He has been in residence with institutions
such as the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival,
and the Cleveland Orchestra. Schneller, described as
“a revelation” in Le Monde for sound worlds that probe
the relationship between computer music and classical
instrumentation, has been performed by groups such
as Ensemble Modern and the Tanglewood Music Center
Orchestra. Finally, the Palestinian-Israeli composer
Odeh-Tamimi synthesizes European idioms with his
native Arabic roots and has received commissions from
Deutschlandfunk, the Donaueschingen Festival and
Musica Viva.

The Ensemble Capilla Flamenca has embarked on a
series of projects to illustrate the cross-relevance of
Franco-Flemish polyphonic chant and Renaissance
instrumentalism with everyday life. The group has
worked together with artists such as the choreographer
Sidi Cherkaoui and the contemporary music ensemble
Het Collectief, weaving together 14th century ars nova
music with the sounds of Karlheinz Stockhausen.
These documentary clips present the group in various
formations and settings, giving a new spin on the
transparent, celestial textures of their music. Whether
recording Heinrich Isaac’s “Ich muss dich lassen” in a
historic Belgian church or singing music by Alexander
Agricola in a montage against mundane scenes such
as a city street car, Capilla Flamenca explores new
possibilities for creating emotional resonance.

Introduction and Allegro
The Israeli Chamber Project, founded four seasons ago
by young musicians based in New York, Berlin and Tel
Aviv, combines performance, education and outreach
into a single mission. The ensemble has toured cities
and remote towns throughout Israel with master
classes and concerts in the hope of making chamber
music more accessible. In turn, they hope to bring
something of its native musical culture abroad. ICP
has commissioned works from Israeli composers such
as Jonathan Keren and Amit Gilutz, also giving preconcert lectures to explain the effects used in a given
contemporary work. “Classical music is a high form of
art,” explains Artistic Director Tibi Cziger. “And if you
have no knowledge it will be much harder to enjoy.”
This season sees the release of the group’s first album
and its Carnegie Hall debut.

From John Cage to emerging composers such as
Carolyn Sparey, the Scottish ensemble Red Note has
dedicated itself to exploring innovative possibilities
for contemporary music performance while attracting
new audiences. Last fall, the group performed Philip
Glass’ music drama 1000 Airplanes on the Roof in a
hangar beneath a Concorde. “Red Note‘s nine-piece
ensemble took care to recreate a classic 1980s Glassian
sound,” reported The Guardian. “But it was the use of
space that stole the show.” This season has included an
experimental performance-installation in collaboration
with Glasgow-based German artist Torsten Lauschmann
and a tour of the Hebridean islands in free concerts of
global music as well as master classes. Red Note has
also formed educational partnerships with the Royal
Conservatoire of Scotland and Glasgow University.

The ”Classical Next Level“ festival presents a nighttime program in Munich‘s clubs.
Thursday 14:00
Vortragssaal der Bibliothek
High culture meets club culture: Classical Next Level is an
alternative and interactive concert experience. Classical
Next Level presents contemporary classical music in a
contemporary context and new surroundings, breaking
the boundaries between classical and club music.
The project is under the patronage of Dr. Hans-Georg
Küppers, Head of Municipal Department of Arts and
Culture, Munich.
While jazz grooves may seem an unlikely match
for the viola da gamba, the Ring Ensemble has
bridged the gap between two musical traditions that
share a common impulse for structured improvisation.
Bringing original baroque instruments together with
double bass, keyboard and percussion, the young
musicians create original compositions based on
improvisation to fixed motives, blending baroque
technique with free, modern jazz. The chamber music
ensemble has been known to just as easily foray into
hip hop and Latin American rhythms, collaborating
with the German rapper Flowin‘ Immo and the modern
dancer Antonio Ramos. They have also taken on more
traditional projects, such as rearranging the “Hut of
baba yaga” from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
The ensemble has performed throughout Germany,
so far releasing two albums and a live DVD from
Dresden.

For this unusual format, Munich‘s leading electronic
music clubs – Bob Beaman and Harry Klein – have
joined forces with the renowned event series Klassik
im Club.
Klassik im Club is performed in a relaxed club setting
rather than a standard concert hall and attracts both the
established classical audience as well as the diverse and
loyal guests of its collaborating club venues. A mixed
public that builds a bridge between two musical worlds.
The Classical Next Level festival is proud to present
two fully loaded nights. The program is framed by
a DJ set that features eclectic classical records, well
selected and mixed by subtle transitions. Video and light
artists enhance the aural and visual experience. Unlike
traditional concerts, the artists speak to the audience
about their music. The artists effortlessly blur the
boundaries between classical and club music with
their performances. On 31 May, Minas Borboudakis
plays his own works for piano and electronics at Bob
Beaman. On the same evening the composer Carl
Oesterhelt will present pieces composed especially

The second festival night will be held at Harry
Klein on 1 June. Musicians from the Münchener
Kammerorchester (David Schultheiss, violin; Kosuke
Yoshikawa, violin; Kelvin Hawthorne, viola; Bridget
MacRae, cello) will perform works by Tom Johnson,
Arvo Pärt and Philip Glass followed by a second
performance by the percussion duo Double Drums.
Not only for the artist but also for the audience,
Classical Next Level shows the potential for the
evolution of music!

Jazz riffs, symphonic e-music, minimalism, sampling,
or ambient sounds, there‘s nothing the Munich native
Carlo Oesterhelt isn’t afraid to try. “There are few
people who make classical music without classical
structures,” he says of his compositions. The drummer,
keyboardist and composer runs the gamut from house
to contemporary classical music, collaborating with
German pop bands such as FSK and The Merricks while
producing a wide-ranging discography. His sixth and
most recent album Requiem explores a neo-Romantic
chamber idiom, while his debut This is Carlo Fashion
creates a series of electro-pop miniatures – a kind of
“recorded diary“, in his words. At Classical:NEXT, he
appears with an unnamed quartet of piano, violin,
bass clarinet, and metallophone in music for theater
productions and radio plays.

Pianist Maria Nguyen-Nhu a.k.a. DJ Dan-Thanh occupies
the growing interface between classical music and club
vibes, remixing everything from Philip Glass to J.S. Bach
while maintaining active as a soloist. Nguyen-Nhu, born
in Witten, Germany, to Vietnamese parents, hopes to
liberate classical music from its stuffy image and attract
a younger audience by casting the likes of Händel and
Mozart in a more contemporary framework. She is
the founder and artistic director of the Munich-based
event series Klassik im Club, as well as artistic director
of Classical Next Level , which similarly brings classical
music to clubs alongside DJ and VJ events. During
Nguyen-Nhu’s piano studies at the Real Conservatorio

the Spanish Ministry of Culture. She also holds a degree
in music journalism.

Double Drums, founded in 2004 by Alexander Glöggler
and Philipp Jungk, combines wild percussion acts
with entertaining music and video effects. Their sound
battery can include snare drums and marimbas as
easily as electric drills, ladders and buckets. Winner of
the 2010 “Kunstförderpreis” from the Bavarian Ministry
of Science, Research and Art, the group has appeared
on German television stations such as ZDF and CCTV.
Tours with the Li Biao Percussion Group has brought
the duo to concert halls throughout China including
the Peking National Centre of Performing Arts and the
Xinghai Concert Hall in Ghuangzhou. Double Drums
offers creative workshops to school children as well as
the visually-impaired in Bavaria. Its debut album Alpha
was praised by the Süddeutsche Zeitung for “a rhythmic
melodic sound cosmos of irresistable conciseness.”

The Munich Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1950, has
created a strong community around its commitment
to new music. “It is possible to see long lines when
today’s music is performed,” reported the Frankfurter
Allgemeine. “Not everywhere, but here.” In 2008, the
ensemble received the “Neues Hören” prize for its
innovations in audience development. The ensemble
holds a Nachtmusik series at the Pinakothek Museum,
offers local workshops and has established a partner
ship with the Puchheimer Youth Chamber Orchestra,
commissioning repertoire from a wide range of
composers including Jörg Widmann, Wolfgang Rihm,
and Marc Andre. The ensemble has released albums
with its home label ECM records as well as Deutsche
Grammophon and Sony Classical. At Classical:NEXT,
the orchestra’s string quartet will perform works by

In 1987, a budget classical record label was started in
Hong Kong by Klaus Heymann, a German businessman
who loved classical music. Swiftly, it gained a world wide
reputation for reliable new digital recordings of the classics
at a remarkably low price. Despite opposition from the
classical record establishment, it grew at an amazing pace,
and soon expanded into opera, early music, contemporary music and
specialist repertoire so that it became appreciated by specialist collectors
as well as the general music lover. It is now the leading provider of
classical music and as an innovator in digital delivery.
This fascinating book explains how it happened, how a one-time tennis coach in Frankfurt became a classical
recording mogul in Hong Kong and how, at the age of 75, he still holds the reins as firmly as ever.
