This project encompasses a building of the HTW Chur, a technical
college in the industrial quarter of Chur in Switzerland. The basic
idea is an interior hall lighted from above. It can be flexibly used
in different spatial constellations for exhibitions and lectures.
Two longitudinal wings are connected with this inner hall. An
innovative cladding of the façade made of copper refers to the
industrial character of the surroundings (text from website

Hotel Castell in Zuoz is spectacularly situated, offering stunning
views of the Engadin Valley. In the hotel's second phase of
rigorous modernization, UNStudio has realized a new apartment
building with 14 luxury dwellings, as well as newly designed half
of the rooms in the existing hotel. An extensive renovation of the
basement was also part of the design. In the remodeling of this
basement, the traditional Hamam design has been reinterpreted
creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. Areas of
movement and rest are arranged fluently around cylindrical
rooms washed with differently coloured lights.

The house with atelier for musician Linard Bardill occupies the
site of a former barn in the old centre of Scharans. To get a
planning permission for constructing the new building in the
protected historical villagescape, the volume of the old barn had
to be rebuilt. For an atelier where he can work properly, Linard
Bardill did not even need a third of the footprint of the old
stable. The missing volume is surrounded by a red concrete wall
covered with a myriad of ornaments. This walled room in the
random geometry of the old barn receives an unexpected
monumentality in this clustered surrounding by a gigantic
elliptical opening in the roof (text from website architect).

To emphasize the strong slope, this school and community centre
in Mastrils is situated at a right angle to the topography. The
levels are shifted with every floor. Inside and outside the
building, cascade-like staircases follow the slope. This structure
allows the building to house a school, a kindergarten, a
multi-purpose hall, an apartment and the municipal

Aside from a glazed roof, this church is enveloped, inside and
out, by alternating runs and blocks of grey Riveo granite and
white Peccia marble—both native to the region. The modern
marble and granite Church of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the
Baptist), designed by Ticinese architect Mario Botta (born 1943)
is the main attraction for the little village of Mogno. The church
was erected between 1994 and 1996 on the site of its 350-year
old predecessor, which was levelled by an avalanche in 1986.
This catastrophe also claimed several of the homes in the village,
although luckily no-one was injured in this event. (text from

Protective housing for the remains of the foundations of three
Roman Buildings (which one of those only a corner is visible). This
protective casing for the archaeological finds was conceived as a
kind of abstract reconstruction of the Roman volumes: a
lightweight framework for walls made of timer lamella which
admit light and air exactly follows the Roman outer walls, thus
producing a package-like effect which give a visible form to
location of the Roman buildings in today's city landscape.

The local Radio e Televisiun Ramantscha (RTR) is the main
occupant of this mighty six-storey angled structure, which
completes a larger architectural quadrangle at the entrance to
Chur's old city centre. What is remarkable is that despite its
expressive and incisive form, the building steps back and puts
itself and its presentation at the service of the urban space. For
the observant viewer the almost banal looking window grid has a
few surprises in store. It is made of concrete, poured in one piece
and subsequently bush-hammered, which is to say rough-hewn
with a hammer and chisel - a process that exposes the concrete's
main constituent, in this case Rhine gravel. The monolithic effect
of the façade has its significance: instead of a stuck-on 'outer
skin' it becomes a massive, five-storey-high, load-bearing
structure, resting on only three supports towards the square and
street. This static tour de force turns the heftily protruding mass
into a light-footed elephant.

plaque near the door of the concrete atelier extension which
reminds people that this is Peter Zumthor's family home and to
respect his privacy.

This Zumthor church in a small village located in the Mountains is
“a cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: the
geometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic and
elusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of the
building on a steep slope.”The church has a wooden construction
and the façade is made with wooden shingles, wooden snips,
similar to the locally build houses. The building is very carefully
detailed even on places you would normally not come (like behind
the concrete stairs of the entrance). The setting is wonderful.

It's about a km tough climbing for the car. In San Benedigt it is

Shortly before his death, architect Rudolf Olgiati donated his
collection of cultural assets to the municipality of Flims on the
condition that 'Das Gelbe Haus' (The Yellow House) in the heart
of Flims was rebuilt according to his liking. Before all, it had to
be "painted white from top to bottom". In 1997, his son, Valerio
Olgiati, was comissioned by the municipality to redesign the

The school extension was made by addition of 2 new volumes
(entirely made of local wood) and open spaces with them
connected. Each building faces a different direction according
their individual functions (educate school building, community

relation with the surroundings: the topography, local materials
and related construction methods, etc... persists in the building
logic.

Architect Gion A. Caminada lives and works in the village of
Cons, 1 km from Vrin. He is known for his traditional approach to
architecture; traditional in the sense of using mainly wood as his
material and using the skills and techniques of local carpenters.
And yet, his architecture surprises through its great innovations
and lovely details. In Vrin, he implemented many projects, among
them a municipal house, a multi-purpose hall, a morgue, a
slaughterhouse with sheds, a bus stop, several detached houses
and a telephone booth.

This exclusive wine estate is a family run business, situated at the
edge of gently sloping vineyards. The extension to the vineyard
exists out of 3 simple buildings that form a small courtyard. 2
existing single storey buildings have been completed by a new
structure. The basement has 8 mushroom-columns, and forms an
extension to the fermentation cellar, which is half sunk in the
ground. At courtyard level is a hall where the grapes are pressed,
and at the top are the rooms for tasting wines. It's a pragmatic,
yet aesthetically pleasing building. The concrete skeleton frame
is filled in with bricks which are turned and have open vertical
joints. Together with the ETH Zurich these wall elements were
assembled by industrial robots. The open-jointed brickwork gives
the facade an image of stacked grapes. It provides sun shading
and ensured an almost constant temperature for an optimal
fermentation process. Transparent polycarbonate sheeting
provides protection against wind and moisture.

Disentis Cloister Girls Dormitory

This project is adjacent to the Benedictine Cloister in Disentis
and is home to the girls who board at the school. Having the
lowest cost proposal, Gion A. Caminada won the project after a
competition. The project is particularly interesting as every floor
within the five-storey building has direct outdoor access. By
integrating the design so well into the terrain, Caminada
eliminated the need for a secondary means of escape.
Consequently, there is one central spine containing the stairs,
services and a lift for disabled access. The stairs make a quarter
turn between levels, so each floor plan is twisted 90' compared to
the floor below. Within this sculptural core are 'snuggle corners' heated copper plates for the girls to curl up in and chat. The girls
move from the ground floor towards the top level with seniority,
as they move "from caterpillars, to pupae, to full butterflies".

Paspels school is a reinforced concrete monolith. The architect
did not use right angles for the outside, so although at first
glance the exterior geometry seems simple, closer study reveals a
chain-like reaction of slight distortions that shroud the building in
an air of strangeness. Inside, however each classroom on the first
and second floors has two right-angled sides that make up the
walls of cruciform access corridors. In sum, the school can be
interpreted as an exercise in the phenomenology of perception.
