he Daytona Pier
A LOOK TO
THE PAST
AND FUTURE
During World War II
the “Ocean Pier” was
required to blacken the
windows to shield it’s lights from the prying eyes
of enemy seamen, because German submarines
prowled off our coast every night. During this
era, the pier was actually a casino. The joint was
jumping as residents scrambled along in the
darkness to reach the pier.
When gambling was outlawed the pier became
a popular bar and dance hall. Over the years it
has served many groups and for many uses such
as a restaurant, a teen night club, an amusement
center and even a theater. Fishing was always its
daytime purpose. But there was also a period
when helicopter tours were an everyday sight.
It has been hammered by numerous storms
and hurricanes throughout the years, but it
always has been repaired and rebuilt. Now in
2005, grandiose plans are being developed to
restore some of that old charm. Five million
dollars is budgeted to be spent. There is even talk
of building a second pier, side by side featuring a
huge Ferris wheel and other carnival style rides
plus a new restaurant. We are excited to have
such a landmark restored and improved. We will
keep you informed as to its progress.
Happy holiday greetings go out to all our
friends around the world. You, our friends and
guests, have blessed us with your patronage at the
Sun Viking Lodge over the past 35 years. We most
gratefully appreciate your loyalty and have truly
enjoyed extending our southern hospitality to you.
May 2006 hold many blessings for you and
those you love. May peace, joy and brotherhood
fill our world. We hope to visit with all of you
again and as always, we warmly welcome you
back to the Sun Viking Lodge.

T
hirty-Five Years of Hospitality! Coming Events
IN DA YTONA
“Welcome to the Sun Viking Lodge!” We’ve been saying that for 35 years now and it
remains as genuine as the day we opened our doors. Since 1971 we have been pleased to
welcome many of you back again and again over the years and we have watched your families grow
and change. We’ve grown and changed a bit too!
On April 1, 1971 (the joke’s always been - April Fool’s Day!), Barbara & Gary Brown purchased
the “Oceanfront Villas” at 2411 South Atlantic Ave. In 1979, the 11 cottages were removed and the
40-room lodge was built and the “Sun Viking Lodge” was born. The 51-room highrise was opened in
1987, adding many oceanfront accommodations and additional amenities. Over the years, four
rental homes were purchased and renovated on adjacent Milton Road, completing our “Unique
Family Resort. We know our success is because of you, our valued guests. Your returning visits are
the cornerstone of our business and the reason we enjoy hospitality so much. Our commitment
remains the same - to provide you with comfortable accommodations and family favorite amenities.
Please join in our Anniversary Celebration. As a Thank You, mention this article and you’ll receive a
special gift upon arrival.

Yvonne Stroder
Dedicated and skilled employees are the heart of any business, and this
is especially true at the Sun Viking Lodge. In an industry that has a traditionally high
turnover rate for employees, we can be proud of the large number who have been
with us for more than 5 years and some for more than 30 years. As a token of our
gratitude, employees and their guests were treated to a special appreciation dinner on
November 15, 2005. The Sun Viking Lodge recognizes these valuable employees by
offering them their choice of gifts when they reach significant milestones in their
careers. This year, six of our employees are celebrating notable anniversaries.
YVONNE STRODER – 30 YEARS! Housekeeping – our second longest
employee in the company. A great big friendly smile is Yvonne’s trademark - always
smiling and willing to work, keeping our guest rooms spotless. Yvonne selected a
large color TV.
LeVonne Wheeler
DONNA SHADLE – 15 YEARS! Bookkeeper and Human Resources – Donna
counts all the pennies and pays all the bills. Keeping track of employee’s records is
her specialty. Donna chose a large color TV.
LeVONNE WHEELER – 15 YEARS! Pool Attendant – LeVonne keeps the pools
and sundecks clean and is our good will ambassador - she should have been in
public relations! LeVonne has selected a gift certificate for a digital camera.
Donna Shadle
ART LATNO – 10 YEARS! Front Desk – Art is one of our night owls working
the evening shift who handles a number of tasks inside and outside of our office,
always willing to do a variety of jobs. Art decided on a gift certificate from Best Buy.
Art Latno
RON VOSTREJS – 10 YEARS! Maintenance Supervisor – Ron oversees the
department responsible for keeping all the rooms, pools and property in the best
possible condition. When something stops working, everyone calls Ron for help. Ron
has selected a gift certificate for a computer.
BRYCE FRANCIS – 5 YEARS! Pool Attendant – When Bryce is not hunting or
fishing, he helps keep our pools and sundecks clean and spotless. Bryce chose a
microwave oven.

Hurricanes!
Now with the hurricane season behind
us, we can take a sigh of relief. Daytona did
well this year avoiding all storms and we are
happy to say, all our repairs are done. Many
motels have been or will be torn down for new
condominiums, giving Daytona Beach a brand
new look!
