HOLIDAY 2005 A N e w s l e t t e r f o r t h e G u e s t s o f t h e S U N V I K I N G L O D G E • D a y t o n a B e a c h S h o re s , F l o r i d a T he Daytona Pier A LOOK TO THE PAST AND FUTURE During World War II the “Ocean Pier” was required to blacken the windows to shield it’s lights from the prying eyes of enemy seamen, because German submarines prowled off our coast every night. During this era, the pier was actually a casino. The joint was jumping as residents scrambled along in the darkness to reach the pier. When gambling was outlawed the pier became a popular bar and dance hall. Over the years it has served many groups and for many uses such as a restaurant, a teen night club, an amusement center and even a theater. Fishing was always its daytime purpose. But there was also a period when helicopter tours were an everyday sight. It has been hammered by numerous storms and hurricanes throughout the years, but it always has been repaired and rebuilt. Now in 2005, grandiose plans are being developed to restore some of that old charm. Five million dollars is budgeted to be spent. There is even talk of building a second pier, side by side featuring a huge Ferris wheel and other carnival style rides plus a new restaurant. We are excited to have such a landmark restored and improved. We will keep you informed as to its progress. Happy holiday greetings go out to all our friends around the world. You, our friends and guests, have blessed us with your patronage at the Sun Viking Lodge over the past 35 years. T hirty-Five Years of Hospitality! Coming Events IN DA YTONA “Welcome to the Sun Viking Lodge!” We’ve been saying that for 35 years now and it remains as genuine as the day we opened our doors. Since 1971 we have been pleased to welcome many of you back again and again over the years and we have watched your families grow and change. We’ve grown and changed a bit too! On April 1, 1971 (the joke’s always been - April Fool’s Day!), Barbara & Gary Brown purchased the “Oceanfront Villas” at 2411 South Atlantic Ave. In 1979, the 11 cottages were removed and the 40-room lodge was built and the “Sun Viking Lodge” was born. The 51-room highrise was opened in 1987, adding many oceanfront accommodations and additional amenities. Over the years, four rental homes were purchased and renovated on adjacent Milton Road, completing our “Unique Family Resort. We know our success is because of you, our valued guests. Your returning visits are the cornerstone of our business and the reason we enjoy hospitality so much. Our commitment remains the same - to provide you with comfortable accommodations and family favorite amenities. Please join in our Anniversary Celebration.
