ince 1985, the Orange
Coast College Foundation
has built a legacy of
providing support for programs and
projects that benefit our students.
I am particularly grateful to the
generous donors acknowledged
in this report. Their continuing gifts
over the last 25 years have benefited
our students through scholarships,
support of the College’s performing and visual arts, assistance for
the Harry & Grace Steele Children’s Center, funding for OCC athletic
teams, gifts to the college’s nationally renowned School of Sailing &
Seamanship, and a myriad of college programs and projects.
As we look ahead to the next few years, the Foundation is slated to
begin construction on the Planetarium at OCC, a one-of-a-kind learning
destination that will serve the campus and surrounding communities.
Additionally, through funds already raised, we will be expanding the
School of Sailing & Seamanship’s Marine Training Program, constructing
a new entrance for the Wendell Pickens Baseball Field, and continuing
to support student services and programs.
Again, we are grateful for your support, and we look forward to all
the wonderful opportunities you create for the students of Orange
Coast College.

he Orange Coast College Foundation supports the college by encouraging gifts of time, treasure
and talent from alumni, campus stakeholders, and community members. Since its founding in
1985, the Orange Coast College Foundation has received over $63 million that has been split
almost equally between cash donations and in-kind gifts of property, boats and equipment. As of May
2011, the Foundation had cash assets of over $13.5 million.
The OCC Foundation dedicates its fundraising efforts toward supporting students at Orange Coast
College. These efforts include current and future students as well as reaching out to the community
for mutually beneficial programs. In addition to the more than $9.6 million in scholarships awarded to
6,500 students, the donors of the OCC Foundation have provided a breadth and depth of contributions
supporting students and the surrounding community across the curriculum spectrum: allied health, athletic
fields, library, computer centers, and on the waterfront. These generous donations reflect the vast array of
opportunities available at the Orange Coast College campus.

Future: A Look Ahead
T
he Orange Coast College Foundation boasts a legacy of successful
capital campaigns to fund facilities and buildings that serve students.
Over the past 25 years, projects have included the Harry and Grace
Steele Children’s Center, the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, the renovation
of the Robert B. Moore Theatre, and the Nautical Library and classrooms
at the OCC School of Sailing & Seamanship. The need for updated and
upgraded facilities remains, and the Foundation is committed to meeting
these needs through our current Capital Campaigns:
$10 million to build a new, state-of-the-art Planetarium on campus for
students and stargazers of all ages.

Legacy of Kindness:
Maruja Baldwin
W
hen Maruja Baldwin moved into her Lido
Channel home in the 1970s, she got to
know her “neighbors” at the Orange Coast
College Sailing & Rowing Center. The OCC crew
team was building its program and needed to replace
outdated wooden shells.
She also established a $1 million charitable remainder trust for the benefit
of the Men’s Crew. Upon her death in 1998, the trust’s principal came to
the Orange Coast College Foundation, where the earnings continue to
support the program.

Winning: OCC Crew
O
CC’s Men’s and Women’s Collegiate Crew programs, located
on Newport Bay, originated with two military quonset huts on
a sand lot with classes taught on the lawn. Today, the publicly
accessible waterfront campus produces some of the top athletes in the
nation. In fact, Coast crews compete only with four-year colleges and
universities, achieving a winning average of 80%.
The OCC Men’s rowing program, for example, became the first collegiate
crew to be invited to the Peoples’ Republic of China, and more than
a dozen times competed in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in
England. David Grant, a coach of the Men’s Crew, served as a coach
for the U.S. Men’s Olympic Rowing Team.

In addition to serving on the Foundation’s Board
of Directors for six years, Maruja provided a
major leadership donation to the campaign
to renovate the Robert B. Moore Theatre and
funded multiple student scholarships.

Maruja responded, and her initial gift sparked
an ongoing love for students, coaches, and
alumni. The OCC oarsmen would hang
banners in her honor and sing happy birthday
to her from the sidewalk below her balcony.
Many became her friends for life.

2010 saw the completion of the new School Age Classroom
Building, which was funded by $900,000 in contributions raised
through the OCC Foundation. This goal was reached through
the assistance of major gifts from the ASOCC, Harry and Grace
Steele Foundation, Pacific Mutual Foundation, and a generous
anonymous contributor in the community.

1998
ince its founding over 40 years ago, the children’s center
on the campus of Orange Coast College has served
nearly 7,500 students and parents. The center provides
affordable and comprehensive child development services to the
children of OCC students. More than 170 children enroll each
semester. Fees are set by the State of California on a sliding scale
based on income and ability to pay. In 1995, the Foundation
raised $1.5 million for a new facility. To ensure a balanced learning
environment, the center features a garden, learning labs, a bike
path around the perimeter, and a barn that houses chickens,
goats, and sheep.

Spirit
of
Adventure: Alaska Eagle
S
tudents discover the spirit of adventure every time the Alaska Eagle sets sail. The ultimate
hands-on learning experience, OCC’s floating classroom builds skills and knowledge in
an intense setting.
Under the OCC flag, the Alaska Eagle has logged 500,000 miles, reaching ports in French
Polynesia, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and this year, a historic 18,000-mile voyage from Newport
Beach, rounding Cape Horn, and back up through the Panama Canal. Alaska Eagle is certified
by the U.S. Coast Guard as a sailing school vessel on “all oceans” routes.
2000
She started her career as “Flyer,” instantly famous for winning the 1978 Whitbread Round the
World Race. Neil Bergt generously donated the renamed Alaska Eagle to Orange Coast College
in 1982. For the past 26 years, the vessel has provided a unique and challenging training platform
from the far reaches of the world to its berth at the OCC Sailing & Rowing Center. All upkeep and
expenses are fully funded by private donations, fees, and boat donations.

I
n the fall of 2003, Orange Coast College joined with Orangewood Children’s Foundation to
support college-bound students exiting foster care, emancipated youth, or others missing
critical family living. The program is dedicated to assisting these students with educational and
interpersonal skills, as well as counseling needed to transfer to a four-year university or pursue
vocational education. Sam Ghafari (pictured) is a current scholar who is pursuing his life goals
with the help and support of this unique program. Now starting his second year at OCC, Sam is
working on becoming either a medical doctor or a researcher in neurobiology.
2002
Funded through individual, corporate, and community foundation donations, the OCC Foundation
has sponsored more than 200 students. The program is especially rewarding to the Foundation
because of the hands-on involvement in the students’ experience at the College. The office
provides access to a computer and work areas for homework and studying, as well as a dose of
inspiration in the form of advice about classes and long-term educational planning.

The publicly accessible waterfront campus is devoted
to practical instruction in sailing, marine safety,
seamanship, and vocational maritime studies. It also
serves as the traditional “home base” and regatta
site for the OCC Men’s and Women’s Collegiate
Sailing teams.

Unlike the College, the School of Sailing &
Seamanship relies on no public funding. Course fees
and other income make up about 70% of its annual
$1.3 million budget. The remaining 30% comes
from private gifts such as boat donations, marine
equipment, books, and cash or securities. Over
the past 25 years, the Foundation has raised nearly
$30 million in support of the program.

T
he Robert B. Moore Theatre opened its doors in 1956 and quickly became the cultural
center for Orange County’s burgeoning “Orange Coast.” The theatre has served as a
focal point for student productions, community presentations, and campus-wide lectures
and special events. When the beloved theatre needed to be updated and renovated in the late
1980s, the OCC Foundation helped raise over $1 million. Renowned architect Richard Neutra
designed the theatre, and therefore, the improvements needed to keep within the original design
and character. By 1993, the renovation was complete with new air conditioning, reconfigured
hallway, enhanced acoustics, improved seating, and modernized lighting.

he Orange Coast College Foundation is privileged to have worked with over 20,000
generous donors and awarded $9.6 million in direct student scholarships over the last
25 years.
With a diverse student population, the breadth and depth of scholarships offered by the OCC
Foundation match the College’s program offerings. There are over 400 individual scholarships
created to serve students attending Orange Coast College. These scholarships cover academic
achievement, leadership, community service, career preparation, and nearly everything in
between.
In addition, the word “scholarship” is more than an individual award to the Foundation. There are
scholarships for renting textbooks on a two-hour basis at the Library, purchasing materials to
enroll in labs, or providing bus passes and meals.

The College had already started
building a tradition of entrepreneurial philanthropy under
the leadership of Dave Grant, Sharon Donoff, and others.
Together, and with the continuing support of volunteer board
members, community volunteers, faculty, staff and, most
importantly, thousands of generous donors, we have raised
over $60 million to support Orange Coast College. The OCC
Foundation has helped change the lives of thousands of
students through scholarships, provided support for Orange County foster youth through the
Guardian Scholars program, changed the face of the College through the construction of the
Harry & Grace Steele Children’s Center and the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, supported the
renovation of the Robert B. Moore Theatre, supported OCC’s nationally recognized Intercollegiate
Rowing & Sailing Center, and helped revitalize the face of the entire campus through the OCC
Foundation’s support in partnership with Measure C.
As I reflect on a quarter century at Orange Coast College, I am enormously grateful to the hundreds
of donors and volunteers listed in this report whose generosity have made these achievements
possible. I am honored to have been led, managed, inspired, hired, promoted, tolerated, and
at times, chastised by my presidents – Dr. Don Bronsard, Dave Grant, Jim McIlwain, Margaret
Gratton, Gene Farrell, Bob Dees, Denise Whittaker, and Dr. Dennis Harkins. And finally, none of

the Orange Coast College Foundation. In 1986, I was fortunate
enough to be hired into an opportunity of a lifetime – the first full-time
executive director of the foundation for
one of America’s greatest community
