Volume 25 Number 2 March-April 2016 The Bayport-Blue Point Library is the community’s portal to life-long learning and is dedicated to promoting knowledge, fostering creativity and bettering lives. Special Events Legendary Women of Long Island Thursday, March 10, 7-8:30pm During the glory days of Long Island’s Gold Coast, all of society was ruled by an elite group of glamorous women. They were the first American superstars as their lives, loves, and scandals played out on the pages of newspapers all over the country. Women like Alva Vanderbilt, Mrs. Clarence Mackay, Barbara Hutton, and the Countess of Bismarck, took the lead at sought after social events, and everyone wanted to be and dress just like them. Others like Zelda Fitzgerald, Winifred Bird, Ann Woodward, and Gertrude Whitney, are remembered for the sensational stories that surround them. Join historian and author Monica Randall for an entertaining program on these colorful social icons of their day. BPA604 Adult Programs Program registration for Bayport-Blue Point library patrons begins on Wednesday, February 24, at 10am. Registration is required for all programs listed unless otherwise noted. Patrons can register online, by phone, or in person. Patrons who register for programs that require fees have one week to come in and pay for the program before their spot is released. Any fees must be paid for by check. Except for driver safety programs, all checks must be made out to the Library. Program registration for non-residents will begin on Tuesday, March 1. Aboard Pope Francis’s Plane Monday, March 14, 7-8:30pm Local resident Bart Jones is Newsday’s religion writer and was selected from among hundreds of journalists worldwide to be aboard Pope Francis’s plane for his historic Cuba-US trip in September 2015. Jones traveled from Rome to Havana to the U.S. and back to Rome with the pope, chronicling the trip. He was at the pope’s Mass in Havana, inside the Oval Office briefly when Obama met with the pontiff, and at Madison Square Garden for Francis’s Mass. Join us for this very special program as Jones tells the inside story of traveling with Pope Francis as part of the Vatican Press Corps. BPA617 Monday, April 18, 7-8:30pm John Spoltore returns to go into detail about the “big four” camera settings: white balance, ISO, shutter speed & aperture. Once you master the “big four” camera settings, you will master creating digital images! It’s recommended that you bring your camera and instruction manual to class. BPA413 Ask Karl Photography Series Monday, March 7, 7-8:30pm Paint Night Adobe Lightroom is an affordable and powerful software program for storing and editing your digital photos. Wildlife photographer Michael Busch will introduce you to the basics of Lightroom and provide you with tips and tricks on how to enhance and edit your photos. BPA410 Understanding Your Digital SLR Monday, April 4, 7-8:30pm This course is designed for owners of digital SLR cameras (single lens reflective cameras that allow the user to change camera lenses, not point and shoot fixed lens cameras). Photographer John Spoltore will cover many camera functions such as auto focus, shutter speeds, shooting modes and more. It is important that you have a working knowledge of your camera and how to adjust its settings. Please bring your camera and instruction manual to class. BPA411 Digital Camera Menu Settings Monday, April 11, 7-8:30pm All digital cameras have menus or buttons to assist you. John Spoltore will demonstrate the locations, settings and functions as found on and within your digital camera. BPA412 Monday, March 28, 6:30-8pm Join cookbook author Margaret M. Johnson for a delightful tour of the Emerald Isle that includes a PowerPoint presentation, recipes from her new cookbook, and tips for traveling to Ireland. March 28 marks the 100th anniversary of Dublin’s “Easter Rising,” and Ms. Johnson will speak on this event as well during her lecture. Tea and Irish sweets will be served. Ms. Johnson’s cookbooks will be available for sale and signing. Fee: $5 payable by check only. Fee: $10 payable by check only. BPA395 Grow More with Less Monday, March 21, 7-8:30pm Horticulture expert Vincent A. Simeone will cover the topics in his book Grow More with Less during this lecture. Mr. Simeone will show you how to garden using less water, less work, and less money. He’ll explain why we should plant for the long term, how to make the best plant selections possible, how to manage invasive species, how to make the most of your lawn, and much more. BPA624 The Wonders of Watercolor Thursday, March 24, 6-8:30pm Enjoy a few relaxing hours of water coloring with artist Victoria Beckert. Wednesday, March 30, 7-8:30pm Senior prevention specialist for the Suffolk County Health Department Gail Feldman will speak on the prevalence of heroine usage on Long Island. On the menu will be a kimchi salad, rice with mixed vegetables, honey marinated beef, braised soy bean curd, and sweet potato noodles with mixed vegetables. The Great Italian Songbook, performed by singer/ guitarist Dave Anthony Setteducati and Quartetto Ducati, features the wonderful music of Italy sung in the original Italian. Don’t worry if you can’t speak “Italiano” – many of the songs featured have been hits on American radio. Come and enjoy some of the most famous melodies of all time. Gibralter Jazz March 20, 2016 Featuring Richie Naef and Phyllis Novin. The sound is “JazzaBilly”, a retro, but rockin blend of Jazz, Standards and R&B. “Phyillis’s powerful, intricate vocals & Richie’s hot guitar styling’s make for a wild ride.” The program draws from Big Bands, Broadway and Soloists; from Keely Smith & Louie Prima, Etta James, Dina Washington, Ella, Ellington and Arlen to name a few. It’s a duet with the sound of a full band…..Welcome to Gibralter Jazz. The Oboe Through Time April 3, 2016 Featuring Frederick Katzenberg on oboe and Gary Klein on piano, this performance will include the pastoral Handel Fitzwilliam Oboe Sonata, the mysterious Andriessen Ballade which is reminiscent of The Planets, the classic Mozart Adagio, and the first half of the amazing Koechlin Quatorze Pieces. Join us for a captivating exploration of oboe music from the rich sounds of the baroque and romantic periods, to the mysterious, fascinating works of the mid-20th century. Side by Side: Hammerstein & Sondheim April 17, 2016 Hammerstein and Sondheim are two of the greatest writers of the American musical. This program will include songs from some of their greatest shows, including Show Boat, South Pacific, Oklahoma, Carousel, The King and I, West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Follies, A Little Night Music and more. Jean and Bill will describe the lives of these remarkable men, their teacher-student relationship, and how they came to be two of the supreme innovators in American musical theater history. The Language of Pasta: From Agnolotti to Ziti Thursday, April 7, 7-8:30pm Unlike most dietary staples, pasta comes in hundreds of shapes, each one bearing a name that tells a story of the region from which it originated. Did you ever wonder what the words spaghetti, linguine, manicotti, and lasagna actually mean? In this lighthearted, informative talk, Dr. Gioacchino Balducci will explore pasta from a historical, linguistic, and cultural perspective. Dr. Balducci is a professor in the Department of European Languages, Literature and Culture at Stony Brook University, where he teaches courses in Italian and Italian cinema. BPA914 Knitting & Crocheting Wednesday, April 13, 7-8:30pm Knitting and crocheting expert Joan Jewhurst will assist and advise patrons on current and contemplated projects, as well as provide instruction to beginners. March 14 ~ The Secret of Roan Inish (PG) 103 min Starring: Jeni Courtney, Eileen Colgan, Mick Lally Plot: 10-year-old Fiona is sent to live with her grandparents in a small fishing village in Donegal, Ireland. She soon learns the local legend that an ancestor of hers married a Selkie - a seal who can turn into a human. March 21 ~ Love & Mercy (PG-13) 121 min Starring: John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks Plot: In the 1960s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. March 28 ~ A Good Year (PG-13) 117 min Starring: Russell Crowe, Abbie Cornish, Albert Finney Plot: A British investment broker inherits his uncle’s chateau and vineyard in Provence, where he spent much of his childhood. He discovers a new laid-back lifestyle as he tries to renovate the estate to be sold. April 4 ~ The Intern (PG-13) 121 min Starring: Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo Plot: 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin. April 11 ~ Steve Jobs (R) 122 min Starring: Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen Plot: Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution, to paint a portrait of the man at its epicenter. The story unfolds backstage at three iconic product launches, ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac. April 18 ~ A Bridge of Spies (PG-13) 141 min Starring: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Alan Alda Plot: During the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers. April 25 ~ Learning to Drive (R) 90 min Starring: Patricia Clarkson, Ben Kingsley, Grace Gummer Plot: As her marriage dissolves, a Manhattan writer takes driving lessons from a Sikh instructor with marriage troubles of his own. The purpose of Teen Tech Week is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of digital media, especially the nonprint resources offered through libraries, such as e-books, e-readers, databases, audiobooks, and social media. BPY635 Authors Unlimited Saturday, April 16 St. Joseph College, Patchogue This free event is brought to you by the public libraries of Suffolk County and St. Joseph’s College. The mission of Authors Unlimited is to celebrate reading by connecting teens and authors. Teens in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to apply to become an Authors Unlimited volunteer. As a volunteer, you will be paired with an author and will stay with that author throughout the day. Garden Cleanup Monday, April 11, 4-5pm Spring is arriving and that means it is time to get outside and garden! Please register for this program. BPY201 From The Children’s REGISTRATION PROCEDURES: REGISTRATION FOR CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS BEGINS ON SATURDAY, MARCH 5th AT 11:00 AM. FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE AND TO ACCOMMODATE BUSY SCHEDULES THE LIBRARY NOW OFFERS SEVERAL REGISTRATION OPTIONS: ONLINE, WALK IN, CALL IN AND PRE-REGISTRATION. Program space is limited and preference is given to children who are Bayport-Blue Point Library district residents. All children must have their own library card and a password to register online. You may come into the library to register or register by phone. Please have your child’s library card available. For families that will be away, registration forms will be available on March 2nd. They will be entered on the day of registration after 1:00pm. Caregivers please call to register non-district resident children who will then be placed in programs according to availability. The Children’s Services Department strives to provide fun and educational programs throughout the year which promote literacy and lifelong learning for children and their families. More and more children are signing up for library programs. To help us better serve you, please plan to attend all programs your child is registered for or call in advance if your child is not able to join us. Whenever possible the library will schedule additional programs to alleviate waiting lists. It is our hope that through programming we can share our appreciation of books with the children in our community, inspire them to love books and help them discover the joy of reading. Photos may be taken at our Library programs for publicity purposes. Please let us know if you do not want photos taken of your child. Many different foods and materials are used in our programs.
