Over 98% of members rejoin the NGCOA Canada each year. This is an exceptionally high retention rate, especially for a young association. Creating value for your membership dollar is the first focus of the NGCOA Canada, and it shows. Club Car, Inc. has just joined as a Platinum Partner with the NGCOA Canada, offering, among other benefits, a rebate of 50% of the cost of membership with the NGCOA Canada member courses for each year that a minimum of 10 new Club Cars are purchased or leased. Now in its fourth year, the Golf Business Canada Conference & Trade Show, owned and operated by the NGCOA Canada, continues to sell out both exhibit space and delegate capacity well in advance of the event. GOLF BUSINESS CANADA Summer 2004 Over 10,000 families participated across Canada in the first annual Take-A-Kid-To-TheCourse-Week in 2003. With over 230 NGCOA member courses offering special promotions and a minimum of one round of free golf to juniors under the age of 16, the event exceeded expected participation and was considered a great success. This year’s event will take place throughout the week of July 5-11. The NGCOA Canada Compensation & Benefits Report was published for the first time in 2003, and is the only Canadian benchmark study of its kind, combining over 18 key golf course staff position salary charts into one centralized document. Do you know what to pay your staff in 2004? 53 Across Canada News THE NGCOA CANADA CHAPTERS PRESENT Atlantic Canada Quebec Ontario Eastern ON/Outaouais In cooperation with the New Brunswick Golf Association and Atlantic Golf Superintendent’s Association, we were successful in having a potential pesticide By-Law averted in Fredericton, NB. *Please Health Canada (Pest note Management Regulatory Agency) have advised they will be conducting inspections of Atlantic Canada courses this season. Welcome our new members: Kanawaki Golf and Country Club, Club de Golf Le Blainvillier, Club de Golf Rosemère, Club de Golf Royal Bromont, Club de Golf Métropolitain, Club de Golf Les Bosquets, Club de Golf de la Presqu’île, Club de Golf Horizons 2000, GGGolf (Corporate Member), Caddy Systems (Corporate Member). The Assessment Review Board (ARB) has scheduled hearings for 2003 tax year appeals around the province. The majority appear to be on hold pending results of the hearings for tax years 2001 and 2002 - please comply with all conditions outlined in hearing notices to ensure your appeal remains active. Failure to comply will probably result in your appeal being dropped. The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is proceeding on the 2001 and 2002 appeals on a representative case basis. The ARB is meeting June 11 to approve our joint recommendation of cases and set dates for the next steps of production of evidence, discovery and hearing date. There has been NO DATE scheduled for 2001/2002 production of evidence. Please call the Central Ontario Chapter Office if your 2003 appeal includes a date for production of evidence that precedes any date published on our website. The Ministry of Finance is pre-disposed after our presentation to assist golf providing we have a sound alternative that can be practically implemented. Lobby your MPP to ensure support for any measure to mitigate the property tax impact on golf courses. The 10th Annual Ottawa Golf and Travel Show was held March 12 - 14th, and was regarded as another successful event, with another increase in show attendance. The 2005 Ottawa Golf and Travel Show will be March 18 to 20th - contact Steve Meabry to receive the “Early Booking Option” forms. A written request to the Ministers of Finance in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland asking for a rebate to course owners on fuel taxes has been turned down. The request has been resubmitted, with consideration noting use of marked/coloured fuel. Requesting the support of your local MLA could be beneficial. Contact Dave McCafferty for a copy of this correspondence. Nova Scotia courses are experiencing substantial increases in property tax assessments. Research, with the support of other NGCOA Chapters, is ongoing. If you are experiencing this situation, contact Dave McCafferty. The chapter will offer assistance to golf course owners in Prince Edward Island on the Government announcement that green fees and memberships will be subject to Provincial Sales Taxes. The Quebec board has approved a Quebec-specific fundraising initiative, which involves a golf card to be sold to golfers in Quebec, with revenues reinvested to the chapter. The card will be on sale in late November for use in the 2005 golf season. Thank you Gary Ready, GolfPEI and Kate Moore, Michigan Golf Course Owners Association for your valuable contributions. The Golfmax Demo Day was held on April 1st at Club de Golf Métropolitain in east Montreal. Thank you to the staff and owners Richard Farley and Mr. Dillilo for hosting our event. The Quebec Chapter Golfmax tournament will be held on Tuesday, September 14th at The Falcon Golf Club in Hudson, Quebec. Elections will be held during the morning meeting to nominate new Quebec Chapter Advisory Board members. Any interested candidates can forward their names to Justine Freund at [email protected]. The Golfmax Demo Day at The Links at Montague in Dartmouth was a fabulous turnout of members and suppliers. Presentations were made by Jim Ritchie (Golfmax Insurance), Russ Hooper (Club Car) and Jeffrey Ayres (M&S Distributors). Comments and suggestions on the recent Halifax Golf & Travel Show would be greatly appreciated, as we review the show and discuss changes for 2005. As our major fundraising initiative, your Chapter Board is committed to making this event more successful in coming years. The location of the Annual Meeting & Golfmax Invitational Golf Tournament has not been set. Anyone wishing to host this event should contact Dave McCafferty. 54 Networking with Golfmax Suppliers at the Atlantic Canada Demo Day The 2004 Golfer’s Red Book has been popular and almost 750 coupons have improved the value of the book, although the price has remained static. Chapter members are reminded to become vendors of this publication. The proceeds from the sale of this publication are a significant source of funding for your Chapter. The freshly printed 2004 Destination Planning Brochure and its partner, the Golf Map, are now in circulation, and a review is ongoing to discuss design, layout and financial viability of both of these initiatives into the future. The plan for the 2005 Eastern Ontario Golf Outaouais Campaign will be available at the Summer Chapter Meeting. Dates and locations for the Summer Chapter Meeting and Golfmax Invitational Golf Tournament will be announced soon. The Toronto City by-law severely restricting the use of pesticides on golf courses has gone into effect although enforcement will not be undertaken until next year. Many Ontario municipalities are proceeding with their own discussions, pending the outcome of an appeal by Crop Life Canada (manufacturers of pesticides) on their loss of the legal suit against the City. The Ministry of the Environment has held discussions with users of water about the implementation of Ontario’s plan to charge for water. The amount of money needed to operate the infrastructure to ensure “Source Protection” is unsure, but pressure is ongoing to make sure services are provided for renewals and new applications for Permits to Take Water. We are also watching closely any costs which may amount to additional tax dollars generated for general provincial revenues. You or your superintendent should be monitoring local Conservation Authorities for their lead and direction of “Source Protection” plans in your area. The Manitoba Chapter Advisory Board will focus on new membership within their new 3-year strategic plan, targeting to double the membership in 3 years. The Chapter is also part of the Mid-Canada Golf and Travel Show and will continue to lead and cooperate with the Allied Golf Associations within the province. *Angus Glen Golf Club factoid: Rated by Score Magazine as the #1 Best Service at a Public Course - every year since 1998, and Best Public Course, Clubhouse and Half Way House Meal, 2003. The Spring Meeting and Golfmax Demo Day was held at Breezy Bend clubhouse providing an excellent meeting space coupled with a fantastic lunch. Over 30 attendees representing 18 golf clubs meant almost 50% of the membership was represented. Keynote speaker Bruce Hunt, Manitoba Liquor Control Commission; spoke on liquor licenses, promotional opportunities for golf courses and what to watch for in dealing with those that have been drinking. The Alberta Advisory Board determined to split the Alberta Golfmax Demo Day with locations in Edmonton and Calgary. The results were successful with attendance of over 105 attendees. Keynote speaker, Richard Monette, spoke and his book, “The Gift” is available for our golf courses to promote and sell within their pro shop. Thank you to hosts Lakeshore Golf Course in Edmonton and Willows Park Golf & CC. Thanks to Glenway Country Club (Gary Lester and staff) for hosting our winter chapter meeting, covering all issues facing our region for 2004. A collective marketing approach to golf in Central Ontario was enthusiastically supported, with 18 members participating in the Play Golf ONTARIO pavilion at the Toronto Golf & Travel Show and 23 facilities opening their doors to free golf in our Spring into Golf promotion. The Board of Trade Country Club again generously hosted the Golfmax Demo Day. Educational seminars, an outline of tourism opportunities and updates from our national staff were highlights of the popular kick-off to the new season. The chapter’s Winnipeg Golf Calendars for 2004 are now being sold. The highlight coupon is a free round of golf at Rat River Golf Course. Sales to now have nearly tripled over last year. The next calendar will be printed in August of 2004 and available September. The 2004 Fall Meeting and Golfmax Tournament will be September 13 at The Links of Quarry Oaks Golf & CC in Steinbach, Manitoba. Katherine Nelson Southwestern ON Regional Director Saskatchewan (905) 934-0841 [email protected] The Golf Saskatchewan 2004 book, a joint venture with the Lung Association of Saskatchewan, will raise awareness of golf within the province and generate funds for the Lung Association and the chapter. The book, originally targeted to have 150 pages, now numbers 256 pages and features many of the NGCOA members. Glen Bosecke MB, SK, AB, BC Regional Director (780) 499-9876 [email protected] Spring business meeting in Ottawa at the Eastern Ontario/Outaouais Golfmax Demo Day GOLF BUSINESS CANADA Hitting the links after the Spring Meeting and Golfmax Demo Day in BC GOLF BUSINESS CANADA Summer 2004 The Chapter Board continues to assist the SAMA committee members to structure a new methodology for property tax assessment for SK golf courses. Ron Erikson, chapter president, made a clear statement regarding our need for involvement within the process. We were successful in hopefully placing a golf delegate on the Commercial Advisory Committee for SAMA. Thanks John Nuefeld for continuance of this important concern. The AB Golfers Guide has been printed for 2004. Revenues will return to the Alberta Chapter. Golf courses should think to advertise to drive their own regional golf publication. The Alberta Golfmax Tournament will be held on September 20, at the Links of Gleneagles Golf & CC. Bus service from Edmonton to Calgary will make transportation easy and enjoyable. Look for further details in the near future. British Columbia The Vancouver Island Golf Show marks the beginning of the chapter involvement to showcase our members and is the first step in a “Grow the Game” focus which includes both National and chapter campaigns. The BC Chapter changed the single Spring Meeting and Demo Day to a series of smaller regional events. Four separate meetings focused on our Golfmax suppliers - each supplier was introduced and presented their 2004 programs. Thank you to hosts Duncan Meadows G & CC, Mayfair Lakes G & CC, Salmon Arm Golf Course and Riverside Golf Resort. Keynote speaker, Kris Jonasson spoke on participation rates across Canada and focused in on BC’s numbers and areas of concern. The BC Golfers Guide has been printed for 2004. Guides are distributed through a network of locations, and with revenues returning to the BC Chapter, many of our golf courses could advertise to drive their own regional golf publication. 55 Industry News NGCOA United States News New Web Seminars offered by the NGCOA NGCOA e-Learning presented by Golf Business magazine invites you to participate in its inaugural live Web Seminar! United States Allied golf industry organizations join the PGA of America in major effort to increase adult and family participation The NGCOA Canada has been awarded the exclusive distribution rights to Fantasy Golf Cards in Canada, and orders are already coming in to supply courses and tournaments with a unique and profitable way to offer something a little different at golf and specialty events. Fantasy Golf Cards let you ‘scratch off’ and play a round of golf in a few seconds to arrive at a ‘score’ at the end of 9 or 18 ‘holes’, and coordinators of the cards are free to determine the price of each card, the prizes and awards to be offered and even place their own sponsors on the cards at the time of ordering to absorb the cost of the cards! Money can even be made at the outset by securing multiple sponsors to advertise on the cards, which can be sold, given out, or mailed with your participant’s information package to make sure they come out to your events to compete for ‘low’ and ‘high’ score. The possibilities are endless, as the ordering parties – tournament convenors, golf course management, charity organizations are in control of all aspects of their own promotions, price-points and distribution, and the amount of money made is up to you. programs targeting the adult population of various segments, including families, couples, women, and business professionals. (ACSSC). Audubon International will continue to assist the ACSSC and the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) in promoting environmental stewardship throughout the golf industry in Canada, and will also continue to work with other interested Canadian partners. “We simply felt that with our larger staff size and experience, the speed and quality of service to program members could improve as a result of this change,” states Kevin A. From July 5-11, 2004, NGCOA Member courses are opening their doors and welcoming families out to the course in celebration of the 2004 TAKE-A-KID-TO-THE-COURSE-WEEK. A cross-Canada look at what’s happening during the 2nd annual Take-A-Kid-To-The-Course-Week Participating courses as of May 18, 2004 New Brunswick NGCOA Canada member courses will again offer a minimum of one round of free golf to every child, under the age of 16, who is accompanied by an adult, and once again an on-course marketing toolkit containing posters, banners, ballots and ballot boxes, etc. has been delivered for individual course advertising and promotions, and a dedicated national marketing blitz has been developed for all media across the country. Last year over 10,000 families and 230 member courses got on board for this fantastic event, with great results! Although the minimum offer of a free round of golf for the junior is required for participation, NGCOA Canada members across Canada are offering more than the minimum and getting creative in the process! The Numbers Game Salmon Arm Golf Club is offering complimentary junior golf for up to three playing juniors with one paid adult in the same group, free practice balls (2for1 adult/child) at certain times, a free one-hour clinic on Sunday, July 11, and complimentary junior clubs (if needed) all week. “Last year, the Take-A-Kid-To-The-CourseWeek was huge success on our Executive course. During a course tour one day, I had the privilege to see five consecutive groups of parents and kids playing golf. There was a lot of laughing and all players seemed to really enjoy the day together. I can’t wait to do it again this year.” Jeff Ciecko, General Manager / Director of Golf of Salmon Arm Golf Club, BC. Size doesn’t matter! Archie’s Family Golf Centre is truly a family course, and last year had a great turnout for their BBQ / golf tournament. This year, the course is offering a “Big Person Little Person” Charity Tournament for junior diabetes on Saturday, July 10th. 64 torch and make the game affordable and fun for the family. We are extremely excited to get the kids out with parents and adults to see the enjoyment on their faces.” Jason Pritchard, CPGA Head Professional, Muskoka Highlands Golf Club, Bracebridge, ON. Bring a buddy! Grande Cache Golf & Country Club is hosting the ‘Buddy Golf Tournament’, a parent-child tournament with prizes to augment their offer of 1/2 price adult green fees for the accompanying adult, free range balls and free junior club rentals all week! “Because our event went over so well last year, we decided to get our annual charity organization involved to combine events. The TakeA-Kid event ties in so well with our facility We look forward to this every year!” Carol Ann Campbell, co-owner, Archie’s Family Golf Centre, Cornwall, ON. We like Mike! Fort William Country Club in Thunder Bay is tossing in the hat, and a free hot dog & pop, as part of their multi-faceted Take-A-Kid offers. The course will be giving away free Mike Weir/KIA Canada golf hats, free range balls after 5pm, free food and drinks and a free 1/2 hour lesson each day with their pro. “When this information came to us, we thought it was a great opportunity to do what we already think is necessary. Kids are the future of the game, and so this is the perfect time to do something and sign up kids and parents at times when the course is not full, and it supports our junior program also, which we are very proud of. And who knows? Maybe we will be able to boast the next Mike Weir!” Bill French, General Manager, Fort William Country Club, Thunder Bay, ON. Par for the course The Links of Montague par 3 course is no stranger to junior golf, and during the week is offering free range balls for juniors and free use of the Pitch & Putt area for families, capping off the week with a rousing rendition of their weekly Family Day Sundays, a staple at the course. Junior golf clinics, part of the mobile Future Links clinics, will also be offered. “We invite all participants throughout the week back to the course to play in a wrap-up tournament and BBQ. Family foursomes all come together to compete and show each other what they have learned throughout the week. That, and a seminar on golf course rules and etiquette really get them set for the game. We look forward to this event each year.” Karl Peetoom, Operations Manager, The Links of Montague, Dartmouth, NS. School Days Along with their Elementary School Program, all juniors are invited to come play the course accompanied by a parent between 12pm and 2pm, seven days a week for $1/hole. During this weeklong event, Muskoka’s three CPGA pros will be available ‘on-demand’ for coaching and a dedicated pro will be free all day long on both Saturday and Sunday to help kids out for free. “The kids that we are teaching at the school level are all raw beginners who have never picked up a club. The accessibility issues are there, and we feel we want to take up this Summer 2004 GOLF BUSINESS CANADA “As a spin-off from our fall Buddy Golf Tournament, we decided to mirror this large event with a smaller, preliminary one as part of the Take-a-Kid week. We have a great junior program here and really look forward to seeing local kids and families take to the course to see who can drive the furthest!” Brigitte Zeller, Manager, Grande Cache Golf & Country Club, Grande Cache, AB. Test your skills… Netley Creek Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg is offering free junior club rentals, free golf clinics, discounts off pro shop merchandise and junior golfers can register at the course for the provincial Junior Golf Skills Contest taking place in August. “Last year was the first year and we really enjoyed it.
