NRA Disnguished Expert - Anthony Shaw
General Membership November 6, 2013 8:00 PM Volume 67 Official Publica on of the Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress November 2013 Number 11 NRA Dis nguished Expert ‐ Anthony Shaw The DSC Jr. Rifle Team proudly announces our newest Dis nguished Expert, Anthony Shaw. This pres gious award is a culmina on of many hours of serious shoo ng where precise scores are needed to make the grade. Shoo ng over 200 targets with scores no less than eights, nines and tens is no easy task. Now, add in four different shoo ng posions and it becomes a grueling feat of marksmanship to say the least. Anthony is a 15 yr. old teen who resides with his mom, step dad, and li le sister. This young man came to our organiza on about two years ago from the Mul -Lakes Conserva on Club. Coming to compete and prac ce with our team is another challenge as Anthony lives in South Lyon, Mich. He is a 10th grader at South Lyons High School and keeps himself busy when not shoo ng by playing video games along with his peers. Anthony has plans to join the military as an MP, later a ending college to obtain a degree in Law Enforcement which would allow him to apply to the FBI, CSI, etc. Mr. Shaw was Top Shot at Boy Scout Summer Camp, one of our DSC Turkey Shoot winners, and took first place in division/age group in 3 official outdoor rifle matches. He actually earned his Dis nguished Expert while he was 14 yrs. old. Anthony is a very shy individual but speaks with authority behind his rifle. When asked why he likes to shoot, Anthony replied, "Because I like shoo ng in compe ons and small bore is cheaper than shoo ng high power. Also, my step-dad (Dave Buckley) used to be on the DSC Jr.Rifle team." Club Officer Elec on 2013 As chairman for the elec on commi ee at our last General membership mee ng in September, I presented those individuals that had been nominated prior to the mee ng and opened up the floor for nomina ons from the general membership. Despite Mr. Delaney’s strong and sage encouragement, no further nomina ons were made from the floor. Nomina ons were then closed and acceptance forms were delivered to all the nominees. Most of those acceptance forms will be rolling in as I write this. Several brave and dedicated individuals have volunteered to become leaders of our club. Some of these mo vated individuals are running for the first me while other are hoping to con nue their commitment to the DSC as a returning member of the board or trustee. Again just for reference, there are 6 board posi ons up for elec on this year and one trustee seat. All director terms are for two years and the trustee is for three years. Any D.S.C. vo ng member who has been a member for at least two years by Sep. 4th and whose membership is in good standing is eligible to run for office. So don’t forget, even if you didn’t run this year, or if you just didn’t have the me this year, or didn’t have enough seniority this year, there is ALWAYS NEXT YEAR! Please take no ce of all the great things that are happening around our club and consider becoming a bigger part of it and throw your hat in the ring and become a member of the board, an officer or a trustee. We have such a wonderful wealth of talent in so many areas and professions, please consider Mr. Delaney encouragement, and help your club by example and leadership. And even if you can’t become a member of the board, an officer or trustee, PLEASE COME OUT AND VOTE! These dedicated members put a great deal of me, effort and thought into running for a seat and would love nothing more than to have everyone come out to see the presenta ons at the November General Membership mee ng and then come back with an informed and enthusias c vote in December. The elec on starts Monday Nov. 18, 2013. All vo ng is done at the DSC Office. Members can vote during normal office hours. Addi onally the DSC Office will be open Saturday November 30th, 2013 from 10am to 2pm. Polls close at General Membership mee ng on December 4th, 2013 at 8 p.m. You must be in the office to cast your vote prior to 8 pm. If a member would like, they may vote by absentee ballot. A sample ballot, with the slate of candidates, will be printed in the November and December P & K and posted on the DSC website. Individuals, committees contact Ellen in the clubhouse at 586-739-3501. November 2013 Plaid & Khaki‐3 Cowboy Ac on By Jim Estes The cowboys were busy pu ng on a variety of matches last month. The first match was a cowboy match won by J.J. Longley, the second match was a Service rifle match won by Jim Estes and the third match was a Wild Bunch match won by Kentucky Dri er. Congratula ons to all for a fine performance. In November the cowboys will host a twilight match on November 9th and a cowboy match on November 17th. Registra on starts at 4:30 pm for the twilight match and 8:30 am for the cowboy match. Come out and watch one of our matches. Ge ng started in Cowboy – Third installment Cowboy ac on shooters need a pistol caliber rifle. There are several to choose from. The most famous are the ones made by Winchester, and the one needed for some of the classes such as fron er cartridge is the model 1866. First chambered in .44 rim fire today it is available in all the modern calibers popular for cowboy ac on shoo ng such as 38 special and 45 colt. The rifle is known as the “Yellow Boy” because the receiver is made of bronze and comes from the factory polished to a bright yellow. Original rifles are too valuable to fire so reproducons are used for shoo ng. Next is the model 1873 originally chambered in 44WCF (44-40) and now available in many calibers this is the most popular rifle for cowboy ac on shoo ng. Rifles are available in barrel lengths from 24 to 28 inches. For a quicker handling firearm some cowboys use the saddle ring carbine which has barrel length of 18 to 20 inches and slightly shorter stocks. Known at the “The Gun That Won The West”, Winchester repea ng rifles were very popular with se lers heading west for both protec on and hun ng to feed the family. The final rifle in the Winchester line up is the model 1892. The strongest ac on of the three models this rifle came along to late in history to win the west but was s ll a very popular rifle un l lever ac on rifles fell out of favor to the bolt ac on rifle made popular by the world wars. The larger rifles such as 1876, 86, 94 and 1895 are not used for cowboy ac on shoo ng because they don’t fire pistol caliber cartridges. Most of the Winchester reproduc ons are made outside the USA. If you want a rifle made at home use a Marlin or a Henry. Marlin makes the model 1894 cowboy in Kentucky and New York and is available in cowboy ac on calibers. Henry makes the Big Boy in cowboy calibers. This is a very good quality reasonably priced rifle made in Bayonne, NJ. Colt couldn’t be le out of the rifle market so in 1884 Colt introduced a pump ac on rifle called the Lightning. This rifle came in three frame sizes to accommodate calibers ranging from .22 rim fire to 50-95 express. Faster than Winchester’s lever ac on rifles this rifle is gaining popularity with cowboy ac on shooters. Currently the rifles are being produced by Uber and Pedersoli. Cowboy ac on shoo ng is a fun fast moving shoo ng sport. Come out and watch us one day. November 2013 Plaid & Khaki‐7 Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress Women of Aim are holding their NOVEMBER BAKE SALE November General Membership Meeting November 6, 2013 Goodies Galore Please support our efforts Most items only $1 Proceeds go to the DSC Kids’ Christmas Party November 2013 Plaid & Khaki‐8 November 2013 Plaid & Khaki‐9 Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress General Membership Monthly Meeting Date: 10-2-2013 Called to Order: 8:00pm Clubhouse Building Pledge of Allegiance: D. Burnett Conservation Pledge: J. Delaney President’s Report: (Mr. Savo was unable to attend Report was given by W. Saylor) Life members and Past Presidents were recognized. • With fall just around the corner, there are many activities to participate in. The Campground manager is gone and we are looking for a replacement. The Campground is looking great primarily due to individual hard work. • During the electrical upgrade we installed 3,000 feet of primary and 11,000 feet of secondary cable. • We have had to scrap the manager’s residence due to disrepair. • Everybody has to work together to get things done both at the Campground and the Dequindre Rd. property. Without everybody working together, we might as well pack our bags and go home. Secretary’s Report: (R. Hegelman) The September GM minutes, and the approved August BOD minutes are on the table, and in the book behind the bar. Treasurers Report: (T. Doudna) I have the unfortunate task of reporting that we are in the red for the month and for the year. This is a milestone I have not seen since I have become the DSC Treasurer. This is due to a lot of factors. We paid all of our property taxes; we paid off the last of the Campground Electrical project bills. My bottom line is we really need to watch expenses. We are doing a good job of bringing money in, our income is about $700K, but our expenses are $750K. A copy of the financials is in the book behind the bar. 1st Vice President’s Report: (B. Dilaura) Nothing to report. 2nd. Vice President Report: (J. Rhodes) I promised to find a way to bring all the RO’s together in the Club. Hopefully to unify them and offer them some return for the time they give the Club for being RO’s. We have come up with the Safety SOP’s and they have been adopted by the Safety Committee and will be forwarded to the SOP Committee for their review and them we will make them available for everybody to read and comment on. They will then have to be approved by the BOD. • As far as incident reports go it has been a great year with very few safety related incident reports and I would like to keep it that way. We are moving into Fall and Open Sight In Season. Please keep your eyes open for any safety issues. Make sure you have your winter salt, etc. Trustees Report: (E. Silarski) The Budgets for the Committees for 2014 will be out within a week. They are based on a 3 year average. The Committees will have to have them back to us by December. No changes will be made to them. Any comments and suggested changes will have to be made to the Trustees. (B. Saylor) By averaging these over a 3 year period it makes it easier on the Trustees, the Committees and Bonnie. If this works out well, we will that go to a 4 year average and then to a 5 year average. Chairman’s Report: (C. Salo) At Monday’s BOD meeting the Board approved the revised Constitution, Bylaws, and the Club SOP’s. They are posted in the Website under the Members Only section. The changes are minor changes mainly on when budgets and the calendar have to be turned in and a couple of things on Committee responsibilities. Please when you have a chance, read them. Operations Manager: (B. Palmer) After many months of searching for someone to run the Kids Christmas Party, I am pleased to announce that Ellen Studer has been nominated by her husband, Dennis Studer and she has agreed to run it on December 14th. • We also are looking for someone to head up the P&K. (B. Saylor) Mr. Saylor awarded Honorary Memberships to the Shelby Fire Department. Darin Geyer accepted them for the department. Member of the month: (B. Savo) The member of the month for September is Dean Burnett. Committee Reports: Work Hours: (M. Schany) The up to date work hours have been posted. Make sure when entering work hours please be sure to post the start and the ending time. Women of Aim: (B. Butler) The Monday evening Pistol Range is closed from now until May. • Our RTBV Class is October 29th. • We are having a Bake Sale here in November to benefit the Kid’s Christmas Party Website: (K. Peters) Please get your articles and pictures into Emil. Emil has created a page for successful hunters. We not only need the pictures, we need the # of points, when, where, time of day, smiling hunters, kids, etc. Sporting Clays: (Paul Koehn) I want to thank Bill DiLaura for hanging our AED storage box. • Starting Oct. 2nd, our last board goes out at 5pm and on Nov. 1st it will go out at 4pm because of it getting dark early. • On October 9th @ 7pm we will have the Committee meeting in the Clubhouse. • If you need work hours, see Al or Gloria. Skeet & Trap: (M. Dzieciolowski) On September 8th we had our SCTP shoot with 45 shooting 12ga. and 27 shooting 20ga. We threw 4,650 targets that day so the Club made out real god. • On May 12th, 2014 we will another SCTP shoot and we are expecting 300 people for that event. • We had 15 participants in the Club Skeet Championship, last Sunday and Andrew Bielman won for the 2nd time. Rifle: (D. Carbery) We had over 20 riflemen help at the Open House for the setup, event and cleanup afterword, both on the rifle range and here in the Clubhouse. • The heat is back on at the rifle range building. Now that the roof is done, heat is now available. • Last month we had the Garand/Springfield match with 22 shooters present. Larry Frey came in 1st with 279 points and the top Junior was Brandon Hauck with 228 points. • Open Sight In starts in 2 days and members are encouraged to come out early because the longer you wait the longer the lines are going to be. For Open Sight In, the escorted guest rate goes away and everybody pays the Open Sight in rate. • The various Rifle Leagues are finished for the year, and the Rifle Banquet is on December 7th. P&K: (B. Saylor) We would like someone up to take over the P&K. We really would appreciate your support. Pistol: (D. Philp) PPC is shooting on Wednesday nights and Bullseye is shooting on Thursday nights. We will be moving indoors over the next couple weeks as the weather deteriorates. • I’d like to thank those that came out and helped at our work bee last weekend. The Basement Range is looking very good and we have a ceiling over the backstop again. We have new bumpers. The Pistol Committee is meeting on Monday night, come on out and join us. • The NRA Range Officer Class is on November 10th. Anybody wanting to be a Club RO must take this class. (D. Canapini) The CPL practices are again starting. The BP Pistol League starts on the 4th Sunday of the month. (D. Duey) The last .22 Steel Match of the year is on October 27th, weather permitting. Membership and Show: (D. Duey) As usual the NMO is on the 3rd Sunday of the month. I still need attendance from the committee reps at this orientation. • I announced earlier that I am rewriting the NMO book because it has not been updated since 2009. I would like to thank the following committees that sent in revised pages for that book: WOA, Shotgun, Pistol, Cowboy, Black Powder and Archery have responded. I still need responses from Rifle, Camping, Education, Junior Shotgun, Sporting Clays, and Website. November 2013 Plaid & Khaki‐10 Life Membership: (J. Delaney) Our next meeting in 12/1. • A study was done of the Youth Deer Hunt for the year 2012. The purpose was to determine the factors resulting in the continuation of hunting by juniors. Mr. Delaney covered the findings of the study. • I am still trying to get and NRA Instructor class going. The cost is $300 for Members and $400 for non-Members. • (B. Saylor) We have ordered 100 DSC Calendars for next year. They will cost $5ea. Education: (J. McDaniels) Some classes are only taught once per year. Look at the schedule and register early as they fill up fast. • The NRA RSO class is on November 10th @ 9am. • Junior Rifle and Pistol have started up. (B. Saylor) Junior Shotgun starts on October 20th, at noon will be the beginners and at 2pm will be higher class shooters for skeet. We will meet in the Shotgun building. (J. McDaniels) We have had juniors get college scholarships and some have been accepted into the military academies because of their shooting ability. Cowboy Action: (J. Estes) We have 2 matches, a regular Cowboy match won by Joe Lupi, and a Bolt Action Service Rife match won by me. • October 3rd, we are having a Wild Bunch Match, on the 19th a silhouette match, on the 20th we are having another Cowboy match and a Chili Cook-off judged by Bonnie and the Canapini’s. • The Wednesday practices are done for the year, on 11/2 the Sunday practices will run from 10-2pm. Conservation: (B. Martin) I will be going out to the Campground to review the weeds in the swimming area, as I have to complete the DEQ aquacide permit for this year. While I am out there I will have to start the process for next year. They have changed the process for applying for the permit. • I will be getting w/Bonnie as we have to start planning the Dequindre Rd. cleanup. This match was sanc oned by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. (CMP) The weather was cloudy, but clear and 22 eager shooters came out to shoot their M1 Garand rifles and/or their Springfield bolt guns. Jim Rhodes ran the match and Chuck Barba and Rick Hegelman were the range officers. This was a 30 round match consis ng of 10 rounds prone slow fire, 10 rounds prone rapid fire and 10 rounds off hand slow fire. The match was shot at 200 yards. For the first me the DSC issued 40 rounds of 1967 -68 Lake City Match .30 ammo to each shooter. The shooters were delighted with this ultra-high quality ammo. When the dust se led, Larry Frey won first place with a score of 279 3x, second was Raffi Dermanueliam with a score of 277 5x and third place was won by Mike Lucas with a score of 279 8x. All three were awarded a Silver Medal. Larry and Raffi used M1 Garand rifles and Mike Lucas used a Springfield M1903-A3 bolt ac on rifle. We received numerous compliments on how the Match was run and we expect the number of shooters to grow in the future as word gets around. November 2013 Plaid & Khaki‐17 THE PHEASANTS 101 EXPERIENCE BY COLTON GAMRAT The DSC pheasant hunt was loads of fun. The first day we had to take a short class. Five people were there, my li le brother, Clay, Gavin and Austen who primarily shoot shotgun and a friend Joey Hoover who is also on the DSC junior rifle team with Clay and me. The class had basic safety informa on and ended with a bit of shoo ng. The next morning my brother and I woke up around 5:30 we drove with my mom and dad to Trapper Jim's hunting preserve. It was an hour and a half drive. We arrived at 8:30 am. When I stepped out of our truck there was a clubhouse building with a huge hickory tree out front along with a few picnic tables. I went to go pull the door open and it didn't go. I laughed at myself and pushed it in. When I went inside I realized the building was fairly old and there was lots of animal mounts throughout the room. When everyone arrived we went to a small shooting range and took a few practice shots at some clay targets. After that we drove to the field. When we got to the field our instructors explained what we were going to do. Once explaining was over we lined up and walked into the field. The terrain wasn't too bad. The first 3 birds I couldn't get a shot at because I was at the far end and in a fairly bad position. By the time we were finished with our first hunt we had a total of 5 pheasants and one of them was mine. After a short break the instructors put out 6 more birds. Just before we went back out the instructors explained to us that we were the ones to make the decisions this time. We had to decide as a group who was going to stand where and where we were going to hunt in the field. I was in a good position and was able to shoot at 4 pheasants. When we walked back from the field we took lots of pictures. After picking off the million burrs and tag-alongs we went back to the clubhouse and ate sloppy joes. Then the hunting stories began. We shot 11 pheasant in all. But it was really weird because one of us shot 5 birds, another shot 4 birds, two of us said they shot 3 pheasant and the last person said they bagged 2. It was kinda funny how our stories kept changing. But, us 5 juniors told great stories, ate lunch and had and awesome experience. And again I want to give a huge thanks to all the instructors, the dog handler (whose name I can’t remember) and his dogs for devoting so much of their weekend to spend with us 5 kids. THE HUNT BY CLAYTON GAMRAT There were 5 hunters and we were going pheasant hunting. It was early about 9 o'clock. We got in a row and walked the field. Personally I thought it was an awesome experience. Every once in a while a bird would flush and bang!!! We bagged them one by one. We shot 11 pheasant total. At the end we calculated one person shot 5, another one of us shot 3 birds, someone else said the got 2 and two of us got 3 each. We all looked at each other and said “That can't be right!"… we all had so much fun. And in the end we all got equal amount of pheasant. I also want to thank all the men who devoted all their time to teach us safety and take us out in the field.
