We have been tinkering with a design for
a simple, chorded zither for a long time.
Inspired by a Chambered Nautilus encountered on one of his tropical adventures, Jerry
awoke in the middle of the night with the
idea of crossing the strings. And it worked!!

The Chord Harp is perfect for sing-a-longs around the
campfire or at family gatherings. You can learn to accompany yourself as you sing simple folk songs without having
to learn complicated fingering patterns. Each group of
strings is tuned to make a chord. The chords are laid out
in such a way that you can play hundreds of familiar songs

If you have access to some woodworking tools, you’ll be
successful building our Pre-Cut Chord Harp Kit. We
provide easy to follow, step by step instructions with plenty of illustrations to guide you through the project from

Building the pre-cut kit is a very rewarding experience. The Voyageur Harp kit brings together all of the lessons we have learned in
over 35 years of designing harp kits. You can assemble this harp in
about 20-30 hours using mostly hand tools. A router is helpful for
rounding corners, but an electric hand sander would do the job as
well. Building this kit represents a real cost savings and you will end
up with a performance quality harp.

The pre-cut kit is a 15-20 hour project that has been greatly
simplified because of our easy bolt-together neck configuration. The body can be assembled using mostly hand tools
although a router (optional) does speed up the project.
We offer the Smartwood in-the-white as well. This configuration means the body has been assembled by us. You
will apply the finish, bolt the neck together, and install the
hardware.
This is our only harp we offer finished but unstrung. Order
this version and all you will have to do is bolt the neck together and install the strings.

People appreciate the classic design and visual appeal of the
Regency Harp. It looks quite regal because of the large platform at the bottom. Despite the heft of this harp, it is supremely balanced so as to feel almost weightless while playing.
Many harpists tell us that this model is one of the best sounding folk harps on the market today.
Building this harp from our pre-cut kit is an immensely rewarding experience. Your friends simply won’t believe that you
could build such an exquisite musical instrument.
Expect to spend at least 40 hours assembling this kit. You’ll
want a large work table, a few clamps, an electric hand drill,
and power sander along with the normal supply of hand tools.
As with all of our kits, you will need to supply the wood
working glue and a varnish. (see page 29 for our finish kit)
Pre-cut kit
The kit went together with only one or two “memorable
moments”. The results are better than ever I could have
dreamed. When I played it the first time in our church,
the audio technician exclaimed, “You bought one with
the amplifier and speaker already inside!” No, it’s just
a Regency with full natural sound.

Our Gothic Harp represents what
most people imagine when they think
of a harp. It has classic lines, elegant
curves, and a warm, mellow tone. Nylon strings throughout make this harp
incredibly soothing and easy to play.
Building the pre-cut kit is more challenging than others due to the curves
built into the soundboard and back.
You’ll want an extra pair of hands to help
install these pieces. You will also want
a large work table, a half dozen clamps,
electric drill, power sander, and a jig-saw,
along with normal household tools.
We have been building this model for
over 25 years and it has proved to be
our most stable harp, requiring less
tuning than any other model. The
stability comes from a combination
of lower string tension and the slight
curve built into the soundboard and
back piece.
Harp is shown with optional levers. Any Musicmakers harp can be fully outfitted with sharping levers.

I built my harp with absolutely no woodworking experience.
I didn’t understand at the time what a meaningful project it
would be, but it has been a very powerful part of my life as a
harpist to learn to play on an instrument I built. Thank you

without re-tuning, they will only play in one key.
Sharping levers are added to harps so you can
quickly change keys without re-tuning the harp.
Every Musicmakers harp can be completely outfitted with sharping levers. If you are able to successfully build one of our harps from a kit, you have
the skills to install these levers. We provide excellent
installation instructions for each brand. The Universal levers are the easiest to install but the Loveland
Levers aren’t much more difficult and offer a more
refined look.

The Mountain Dulcimer is a true piece
of American Folk Art. The instrument
comes to us from the southern Appalachian Mountains which is where it gets
its other common name, the Appalachian
Dulcimer. Its long history and continued
popularity are due to the fact that the
instrument is relatively easy to build and
simple to play. The sound is pure, sweet,
and as simple as the pastoral pleasures
these instruments evoke.

Folks have been making these by hand here in America since the 19th century. Musicmakers has made it easy for you to join this rich tradition with
two different syles of mountain dulcimers. The hourglass style is a more
traditional shape and the teardrop style is slightly easier to build.
Expect to spend between 20-30 hours building from our pre-cut kit. Adding some decorative inlay banding (page 27) around the edge is great way
to customize this project. You’ll need a router if you want to do that.

What is Strumbly?
Simply put, Strumbly is the easiest
fretted musical instrument you will ever play.
Our pre-cut kit is about a 10-15 hour project. You’ll
glue the frame to the neck which is greatly simplified
thanks to the slots cut into the heel. Glue on the front
and back and then trim and sand. The fret-slots are
pre cut and the holes for the tuners are pre-drilled.
Sand, decorate, apply some varnish, string it up and
start strumming! Download the assembly instructions
for a detailed preview of the assembly process.

Micah is not quite five. He was able to help with the sanding, screwing the
neck to the box (after I drilled the holes), holding one end of the strings
taut while I tied the knots, threading the strings through the holes in the
tuning pins, and turning the tuning key. It was his choice to mount the
neck on the bottom of the box so he can open the secret compartment more
easily. I glued on the toothpicks, broke off the ends and applied the handrubbed (tung oil) finish.

Scratch Builder’s Supplies
VARNISH
Wipe-on gel urethane is simply the best! No drips, no brushes to
clean up, great looks, excellent protective coating in 5 easy steps:
1) Sand the wood smooth with 180 grit sandpaper.
2) Wipe on first coat of gel varnish to seal the wood, let dry fully.
3) Sand the dried varnish baby-smooth with 600 grit sandpaper.

4) Wipe on 2nd coat of gel varnish, let dry.
5) Repeat steps 3 & 4 until it looks professional, the more coats, the better!

For the past 16 years I have watched Jerry share his joy and creativity with countless souls. He’s been
helping people build musical instruments for a long time now and decided the time was right to retire.
My wife, Stephanie, and I are thrilled and honored to take on the role of ownership and to continue the
work Jerry began 37 years ago.
My background couldn’t be better suited to Musicmakers. I enjoy playing an eclectic array of music on
guitar and mandolin and I am a complete nerd about lutherie and woodworking. Ask me about how to
sharpen a chisel or about bracing patterns on guitars and I’m likely to talk your ear off. I have a background in science education and a passion for teaching and lifelong learning. Basically, if you drew a
venn diagram of my passions, Musicmakers would be right there in the middle.
Stephanie has a social services background and has spent the last 15 years working with battered
women and homeless mothers. She will be helping out part time in the office as well as continuing
to work part time as a family coach. She is excited to get involved in Musicmakers and is particularly
interested in the music therapy aspect of what we do.
I couldn’t do this alone and I’m thankful I don’t have to. We have an amazing team here at Musicmakers. Cody, Mikaela, Matt, and Sharon keep the front office humming while Zach, Tim, and I make the
sawdust fly. And Jerry isn’t ready to leave quite yet. He’ll still be working his wonders 3 days a week.
We have something wonderful at Musicmakers. The experience of building and playing musical instruments is something worth sharing with the world and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do so.
