Take this!” The Legend of Zelda 14 Dear friends, clients and prospects, It wouldn’t be unfair to label this edition of the Pinyin News Magazine as a special geek issue. If you have read our previous newsletters and are now thinking “could it possibly get any worse?”, then let us assure you that indeed it can. For this is a newsletter full of trolls, video games and Formula One. There is, however, some method in the madness. For the sake of variation, this issue’s spotlight feature is centered on an artist rather than a designer. John Bauer is one of Sweden’s best-known and most beloved painters. He became known for his portrayals of creatures from Scandinavian folklore in general and trolls in particular. As summer is upon us, we have also decided to devote a few pages to another topic full of nostalgia, namely video games. Indeed, as it is common knowledge that the Beijing summer – along with winter and the other seasons – is an ideal time to stay indoors, we offer a quick introduction and some useful recommendations. Finally, we wish to take this newsletter as an opportunity to commemorate Ayrton Senna, the Formula One champion who tragically lost his life on May 1st twenty years ago. Senna, whose skills, passion and determination are a constant source of inspiration to us here at Pinyin, also appears on the cover of this issue which we would like to dedicate to his memory. Let the sport commence! The Pinyin Team 20 28 40 42 6 Artist spotlight: John Bauer John Bauer is Sweden’s foremost fairytale artist and probably the person who has had the biggest influence on the way the country’s population envision nature. Pinyin Studio wishes to salute Mr. Bauer, an adult man who spent his life drawing trolls. And more. The huldra and the magic herb Princess Tuvstarr by the tarn B orn in 1882, John Bauer grew up in Jönköping, on the southern tip of Lake Vättern in Sweden. A dreamer by nature, Bauer doesn’t appear to have been overly interested in schoolwork. He rather spent his time outdoors or drawing and he was already a very promising artist, as evidenced by the caricatures he drew of his teachers. At the tender age of 16, Bauer moved to Stockholm to pursue artistic studies. It was an insecure and self-doubting young man who, with the economic support of his parents, moved to the capital to try his luck. Fortunately, Bauer’s doubts – which, it seems, would return to haunt him throughout his entire life – were ill founded. He was frequently hired as an illustrator for various papers and in the year 1900, after two years of preparations, he was admitted to the Swedish Academy of Arts. Studying at the prestigious school, however, proved to be a frustrating experience. The Academy was very traditional and historical painting was viewed as the ideal at the time. Bauer, who wanted to go his own way, considered dropping out but eventually decided to stay. One positive result of his decision was the romantic relationship between Bauer and one of the school’s female students, Esther Ellqvist, whom he married in December 1906. In the spring of 1908, the young couple embarked on an almost two year long journey to Italy, a trip which would have great importance for Bauer’s artistic development. Upon returning to Sweden, the Bauers settled in a house outside of the city of Gränna, at the south of Lake Vättern. The house, known as Villa Björkudden, became the pair’s home for several years and it was here that their son, Bengt, was born in 1915. Clearly, John Bauer felt very at ease in the idyllic and quiet surroundings of southern Lake Vättern. He spent hours walking the deep and virtually untouched forests and sometimes explored the clear lakes by canoe. A Forest Archetype The period from 1907 to 1915 was a very creative one for Bauer and also one during which he created many of the works for which he is best known. His success is closely linked to the creation of the children’s fairytale collection Among Gnomes and Trolls (Bland tomtar och troll) for which Bauer provided the illustrations. As its name suggests, this collection of stories – which is published annually to this very day – focuses heavily on Swedish folklore and features mythical creatures such as elves, giants and trolls. Bauer would provide the illustrations for Among Gnomes and Trolls for several years. For the first three years, Bauer’s style was still developing and he borrowed impressions and ideas from other artists. Still, his work quickly became very appreciated and intimately linked with the publication. The importance of Bauer’s illustrations became very clear in 1911 when, following a disagreement, the publisher hired another artist and sales declined as a result. Fortunately, Bauer returned to provide the illustrations for the following four editions. His art reached new highs as he was freer in his choice of motifs and was allowed to make his drawing more independent from the stories they illustrated. The illustrations created for Among Gnomes and Trolls would prove to 8 have a lasting impact on the imagery generations of Swedes associate with the forest and the fictional creatures that were once thought to inhabit it. Bauer had in fact created an archetypical representation of Scandinavian nature. This would of course not have been possible had it not been for the quality of Bauer’s work. The illustrations carry a strong sense of mood and have an immediate impact on the beholder. The paintings possess a riveting quality which may partly stem from the sense of mystery they carry as well as the often quite unsafe scenes they depict, thus adding a drop of apprehension to the sense of wonder. An example of one of these strong scenes can be found in the illustration “Trollörten” from 1915. The illustration shows the huldra (skogsrået) giving a magical herb to the young protagonist of the story. The huldra is grotesque in appearance with her big nose, long, hairy arms, immense and crooked hands and big feet. She towers above the boy in a contorted pose, kindly extending the herb to him. Around them, the forest stands thick and dark – Bauer always remained very reserved in his use of color, generally favoring a gloomy palette to reinforce the air of natural mystery. for him to break away from the stagnation he felt had gripped him. 1915 proved to be the last year for which he provided illustrations for Among Gnomes and Troll, but he would return to the forest and the trolls in later paintings. The forest provides the décor for many of Bauer’s illustrations. While the forest clearly holds great importance, Bauer depicted it in an increasingly stylized and less realistic manner. The tree trunks are seen as straight pillars and the forest floor and boulders of the background are generally drawn in a not so detailed fashion, heightening the impression of being immerged in a vast and endless wood. The illustration of Princess Tuvstarr by the tarn, Mother’s Love for instance, contains several of these characteristics. As many of Bauer’s paintings, it is one of opposites: the light figure of the girl stands out against the subdued colors of the forest and the water, the details of the foreground stand out from the vague lines of the backdrop and the straight, austere lines of the trees contrast with the curls and soft curbs of hair, roots and boulders in a moment of stillness and melancholy. Just as with the boy and the huldra in “Trollörten”, human boys and princesses are often used to contrast with and thus highlight the grimness of the trolls. The brownish trolls usually wear earth-colored clothing, adopt hunched postures and parade large noses and ears. Their small eyes – another characteristic of Bauer’s trolls – hint at the fact that they are generally goodIllustration from The Boy and the Trolls hearted creatures who are more dumb than malicious. Tyr and Fenrir, illustration from Fädernas gudasaga New Directions Bauer also encountered difficulties in his private life. His marriage with Esther grew increasingly unstable. She was not as enthused as her husband about life at Villa Björkudden, where she felt isolated, and wished to move to Stockholm. The couple decided to move and, with the financial aid of John Bauer’s father, had a house built outside of the capital. Bauer thought of this as a potential new start but the move to the new house in 1918 would in fact lead to the peril of the small family. Distrusting transportation by train, Bauer concluded it was safer to move his family to Stockholm by boat. This, however, soon would reveal itself to be a tragic miscalculation as the ferry carrying the Bauer family capsized in a storm, dragging all on board with it into the murky waters of Lake Vättern. Although his life and career were cut short, John Bauer’s name has remained famous in Sweden as his illustrations enjoy enduring popularity. By setting the epitome of the Nordic forests and folklore creatures, Bauer has shaped the childhoods and minds of generations. Through this exploit he has cemented himself as one of Sweden’s greatest artists. Clearly, none of this would have been possible had Bauer not had the strength and courage to overcome convention and self-doubt and venture deep into the naïve theme of the fairytale woods. In spite of the success, it seems as if Bauer was in need of a change towards the mid 1910’s. He felt pressured by demands and expectations and described himself as empty and tired. Moreover, he felt his family was not enjoying the material benefits he had hoped for and in letters from this period he often appeared downcast and melancholic. Self-doubt once again harried him. His attention increasingly turned to new subjects and styles. He worked on murals and theater sets and drew inspiration from the modernist movement. Bauer’s changes and experimentations were a way Trolls 10 PINYIN STUDIO BELATED CELEBRATIONS Early in 2014, Pinyin Studio organized a small event in celebration of the company’s first two years of activity. The event took the form of a cocktail party during which work by the Pinyin Studio photographers was exhibited. It was hosted at the Joy Palace gallery in Beijing. The event was attended by many of Pinyin Studio’s clients and friends, who were given the opportunity to have their portrait taken as a souvenir of the evening. The portraits were sent out by email and some of them were also used to create a memento poster. RECENT WORK BY PINYIN STUDIO CLUB FRANCE VI Pinyin Studio recently developed a new visual identity for Club France, an organization under the French Embassy aiming to encourage Chinese students to study in France. Pinyin Studio has met Mr. Wang Qian of the Yaqu Academy of Photography in Beijing to discuss the evolution of photography in China.. FOCUS ON THE VIEW THE YAQU ACADEMY AND PHOTOGRAPHY IN CHINA T he Yaqu Academy of Photography was set up in 2011 with the explicit aim of teaching pure and serious photography. It seems as if the idea quickly found its target because, since its creation, over 3000 students of all ages, ranging from only 6 years to 87 years old, have enrolled at the Academy. Photo by Yaqu Student Photo by Yaqu Student Zhang Ke Mr. Wang Qian is the president and headmaster of the school. With almost ten years of working experience as a professional photographer as well as three years of photography teaching experience under his belt, it is hard to imagine a person better suited for the task.Yet, photography wasn’t always his main passion. THE DIGITAL CAMERA WAS KEY A key to the rise of hobby photography, says Mr. Wang, was the popularization of the digital camera. It was this step of technical evolution which, almost over night, allowed photography to become a popular hobby and thus created the precondition for the establishment of the Yaqu school. The digital camera, explains Mr. Wang, has turned photography into a new outlet for people’s creativity. “I actually dreamt of working as a zoologist when I was a child”, he confesses when we meet him at the school’s modern facilities in the Guo Mao area. Photo by Yaqu Student Zhao Da Ling Photo by Yaqu Student Jin Xiu Mei Photo by Yaqu Student Bai Hong Wei Having put his childhood dreams aside, Mr. Wang first came into contact with photography when he started working in a friend’s photo studio. The job consisted in developing films and allowed him to accumulate working experience very quickly. When he found a job in the IT industry, photography instead became Mr. Wang’s leisure. It was only a few years later that he realized the increased potential of photography as a hobby and decided to share his knowledge with others. Photo by Yaqu Student “Chinese people’s spiritual needs are thriving”, he explains, “and China has a good environment which is suited for the growth of photography. Before, many were obsessed with painting and calligraphy but these are activities which can only really be enjoyed after a long time of studying and mastering the skills. Whereas photography, especially after the digital camera, let’s everybody experience the fun with relatively few technical requirements.” 16 Photo by Yaqu Student Zhu Heng Photo by Yaqu Student Pan Hai The ease of use of the modern equipment has also shifted the weight from technical skills to creativity. In the past, photography students – just like carpenters, bricklayers or students of any other traditional, skill-based work – needed to study together with their teachers for a long time just to acquire the necessary technical skills. Learning photography in this way usually meant the students would have excellent technical knowledge but lack creativity. In other words, this form of training created many photography craftsmen, but very few photography masters. THE PHOTO BOOM IN CHINA The changes that the photography industry has gone through are of course also linked to official policy.Things really began to change with the open door policy of the late 1970’s, and then again during the 1990’s when photographic studios from Hong Kong and Taiwan began to enter the Chinese mainland. This would have a great impact on the industry, both in terms of the photography itself as well as in terms of marketing and management. Suddenly, photographic studios started popping up everywhere and it seemed the nearest photo studio was never more than a few meters away. What’s equally surprising is that they all seemed to be flourishing. Rapidly, photography developed into a real industry in China, including equipment, personal training, enterprise consulting and franchising. As a consequence, the number of people with an interest in photography has increased dramatically and the boundaries between professional photography and leisure photography have begun to become blurred. Just like driving, photography has moved from being an exclusive career reserved for a few to becoming a basic life skill for all. This, however, does not necessarily mean that the number of professional photographers has increased, as illustrated by Yaqu’s students. Through their hard work, many of the students are able to join the ranks of the very best but still very few of them take up photography as a profession. THE VIEW REMAINS ESSENTIAL Photo by Yaqu Student Pan Hai Photo by Yaqu Student Fang Hai Qing Photo by Yaqu Student Jin Xiu Mei In a world where photography has become so ubiquitous, photographers, more than ever, have to stand out through their vision and style. “This is the hardest to learn and also what we strive to teach our students”, explains Mr. Wang. . “We want them to learn to see the world in a new way and to express their attitude, viewpoints and perspective through the photos.” So, ultimately, photography is the art of seeing and the equipment only a means to an end. This is also the reason why good photographers can still make their mark. Or, as Mr. Wang puts it: Photo by Yaqu Student Fang Xiao Yan “It is easy to imitate others, but it is hard to be unique yourself. Just like it’s easy to have fun with photography, but it is hard to choose it as your life vocation.” Photo by Yaqu Student Yin Jian Ping Photo by Yaqu Student Wang Yuan Cheng Photo by Yaqu Student Zhu Heng Jennifer Lawrence h GET YOUR COPY TODAY! õYµ(ĈÕf®i)Vµ«ÕýóđGJ*ÜêÕfĺÊAmerican HustleÕĥÍc¤J ®qJohn Hiscockć= Jennifer LawrenceĮçďW»=»éèoģWâud ĩgÄ?WćÙĹJ!L375}"U21BonoĸJ"g 33a_gă°eª@čoĸ'«±WĥÍc ¤Jîĸ2͵ÅIÆWf®ĸ&Ę'23vWfÃM ò,ÙðÇN(Ĉg;¦mijĵÂáĠ|Ùg ÕɾË4`IJ»ĸ GVcke^Y"<[x<[pd-DU &#b9rnJK@nT2Jl3 T)m" Ę"°wR£gÕ«ÑAmerican HustleĸÊ ĂĚ70 ĸFBIñJ¯÷ÕĖ*ĸJù<¶ìÕT$ā MĸgğÕfC60ī%ġħĸ.Eô¸ONČXÕ ċĥ_¹ÕĶtĄÿ7'T$āMN'íTAāĬB5 §nMĸĉĊÕĥıķĔ10íĥĪĭ©í TĸÒÕbºĸ35KĸZïÕēz\Þ Ę°Ď3ÇÕUdĸĘĞ=»'ÀnÕ9ĸ¢§ +Ïå³ÕäÓ ÑÐDavid O.RussellrÃĸ1>VÑSilver Linings üðy²Ĝĸ !{·ù½}q PlaybookrĕJennifer LawrenceĸĘýóĀgöe ª@cĸVÝ#T$āMIrving RosenfeldĸAmy AdamsÃÕfCĸBradley CooperĴÃJ¨Õ LawrenceĘýó-7^NÛßĸ8Ù×üRãĸ FBI MĸLawrence:ÃÜêĸěĸ-*ÕRosenfeldÕk s/g~¬ğ¼3Js]m"%X$J*F> lĸRosalynĘýóĀg=»ĥÍc¤JĸùL 3J/A; $JA;>gþĤĝ eª@ÚJ[gĐàæĐęøúĸ¥ĢĨÕİĦĸb J>?u86:Z3J>kSFn>J `ÕDĴĸćą|Ù¿PÕ«ÁûHį oJ-I\ LawrencećĝĹ9k{.EjfH%(kR` Jmi~1iCz,KVJ|koxJo hĸ°Õĸg]ÎÕxjĸ&°ëaØĸSgė RosalynTt4kBJN"%XkSJqMi Ēĸ ÚĝĆi)´hÕ]Îg gÌÕìĸĘĀ vDavid O .Russellĸ0J&J|= y Ęýó´pĀ¡FNQÈ POnJQw = W+4&Q' 48 | PARKSON SPRING ÔÖ METALLIC »ºIwQ FLORAL ¡o5£Kd¸ ºIX ¨Á¡o§MÄ* 4eMYY$¬ªLH »ºI!¢C¹´Äl«FB[ 1°ºI¿/3@N'µ 27P_W¿/ynTDP vO?>>·x,Ä«ac µ27P_W3@ ijÄ£p hkmU6 z§©:³5£H¯GS `o8g¾f¦"%Ä¡o5£ 9];ÅÀ#£p\b \&GĶ³)5sJ¡ÄÀ à DPÄuW£A R.-EW0t?qIJ ®½±r¼W8|~¤ZV }{¥<l+^(E ÄU@= Design and layout: Pinyin Studio Copywriting: PinyinTouch Photography: Pinyin Studio | 49 1 1 2 2014 SPRING ISSUE 2 1. During his all too short career, Senna established himself as a man of unmatched passion, speed and charisma. Pinyin Studio wishes to commemorate the man who is widely considered the greatest Formula 1 driver who ever lived. 21.03.1960 AYRTON SENNA 01.05.1994 A yrton Senna was a man completely dedicated to his job, a job which also happened to be his passion. It showed in his hard work and the hours he spent trying to improve his cars or himself. It also showed in his vivid emotions in times of success or hardship. Perhaps even more visibly however, it showed in his pace. From the mid 80’s to the time of his death in 1994, Senna was the fastest man alive and known for his sensational quickness during qualifications, which allowed him to score more pole positions than anyone had ever done before him. There is a sense of justice when the driver who wins a race also happens to be the fastest and, although he would have deserved to win more, Senna did enjoy many victories. During his ten-year Formula 1 career, the charismatic Brazilian won three world championships and 41 races, which, at that time, made him the man with the second most wins in F1 history. These results did not always come easy though. As he didn’t always have the best car, Senna had to surpass his rivals by sheer talent and often excelled in difficult, rainy conditions when the difference between cars was reduced. This is particularly impressive given that he came into Formula 1 at a very competitive period; from the very start of his career, he raced against world champions such as Nelson Piquet, Niki Lauda, Keke Rosberg, and Nigel Mansell and during later years, he raced young future champions such as Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen. Most notably, however, Senna competed against Frenchman Alain Prost, a man often described as his nemesis. Prost and Senna drove as team mates at McLaren during 1988 and 1989 until their quickly deteriorating relationship spurred Prost to leave the team. The tough competition from Prost certainly cost Senna many victories but was also a strong source of motivation. For instance, when Prost signed with the all-conquering Williams team for the 1993 season – and introduced a clause in his contract preventing the team from also signing with Senna – the Brazilian was infuriated and vowed to do all in his power to beat the Frenchman in spite of having a car that logically shouldn’t stand a chance. He achieved some of his best drives that year. In fact, the entire ‘93 season is a great example of how far one can reach by virtue of talent and determination. That year, at the European grand Prix at Donington Park, Senna accomplished what is often considered to be one of the best laps ever driven in the history of motor racing. Having dropped down one position at the start, Senna managed to move from fifth to first position in just one lap, overtaking the vastly superior Williams cars of Hill and archrival Prost in the process before going on to score a triumphant win. Senna even managed to take the lead in the championship standings during the beginning of the season. He was later caught up and eventually finished second behind Prost but although this may seem as a disappointment, it was in fact a true exploit. Indeed, by the end of the season, Senna hadn’t just accomplished some breathtaking races with an underpowered machine but he had also proved that he could challenge through consistency as well as through pure speed. Because he spent many years in uncompetitive cars and died at the peak of his career, Senna doesn’t hold as many records as he ought to. His record of 65 Pole Positions, which had once looked truly indomitable, was broken by Michael Schumacher in 2006. It is worth noting, however, that Schumacher had participated in 233 Grand Prix events by the time he broke the record, compared to Senna’s 162 entries. This is also one of the reasons why Senna is still held in such high esteem: given his extraordinary talent, there is little doubt that he would have kept on out-qualifying his competitors and won several more championships had he not died in ‘94. With this in mind, it is hardly surprising that Senna’s name usually tops the lists when journalists, team bosses or F1 drivers vote to elect the greatest drivers of all time. As much as his speed and his results, however, what has made Senna an ever relevant source of inspiration is his passion and commitment. He would often go into lengthy explanations about a race or about what he thought was just, completely convinced of the seriousness of the matter. Though he also had a sense of humour and sometimes mused about life outside of F1, his solemnity when discussing racing made it clear that for him it was much more than just a profession or a sport – it was his life. His strong sense of belief also surfaced in his approach to religion and in his commitment to helping underprivileged children. The latter is one of the reasons why many young Brazilians still know Senna’s name. Based on Senna’s expressed desire to help in a more organized manner rather than simply through donations, the Senna Foundation was created in his memory after his death. The non-profit organization strives to bring better education to children in Brazil and still stands as an extraordinary monument over a prodigious driver and a great man. He would probably have taken his mediocre Toleman to victory if it hadn’t. Monaco 1988 During the qualifications, Senna showcased his superior speed by scoring pole position with a time 1.4 seconds quicker than the second fastest driver, his teammate Alain Prost. Senna described the experience as driving on another level of consciousness. Portugal 1985 Driving for Lotus, Senna scored his first Grand Prix victory at the Estoril circuit in Portugal. Starting from pole position for the first time, Senna lapped all cars but one during the race. Great Britain 1988 After having overtaken the Ferraris in front of him, Senna scored another triumphant victory in the pouring rain. Spain 1986 Senna defended his lead against the pursuing Nigel Mansell and won by just 0.014 seconds. Japan 1988 Senna knew he would clinch his first World Championship by winning the race but stalled on the grid. He was fourteenth when he finally joined the race and began his ascension through the field. Twenty-seven laps later, he overtook his rival for the title, Prost, and pulled away to score his eighth win of the season and claim the title. 24 MEMORABLE RACING MOMENTS Japan 1989 After a season marred by unreliability problems, Senna had to win the race to retain the chance to defend his title. Senna and Prost collided as the Brazilian tried to overtake the championship-leading Frenchman. Prost retired but Senna rejoined the race and, through some furious driving, managed to take the lead and win the race. Only then, when the victory had been secured, was he disqualified for having cut a chicane when rejoining. An infamous conclusion to an epic race. Europe 1993 Senna’s drive at the European Grand Prix of 1993 – which was held at Donington Park in the UK – is widely regarded as one of the best ever. The first lap saw Senna overtake four competitors before eventually lapping the entire field except for one car and finishing over a minute ahead of the runner-up. Brazil 1991 Senna had always dreamt of winning his home Grand Prix, yet the victory had always eluded him. In 1991, Senna was leading the race when experiencing transmission problems. Determined not to fail, he still pushed ahead and scored an incredible win with a car stuck in 6th gear. The McLaren MP4/4 This is the car in which Senna won his first World Championship in 1988, scoring 8 victories and 13 pole positions in the process. The car was so dominant, it allowed the team to win 15 races and score 15 pole positions over the course of the season’s 16 races. Because of the supremacy of the MP 4/4, the season quickly developed into a thrilling duel between the team’s two very talented but also very different drivers, Senna and Prost. Belgium 1992 Frenchman Eric Comas suffered a violent crash during the Friday qualifying sessions of the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix. Arriving first on the scene of the accident, Senna immediately stopped his car and ran onto the track to help the Frenchman while other cars were passing just inches away. In the Sunday’s race, Senna “only” finished 5th because of a poor tire choice but his driving was nevertheless spectacular. The Lotus 97T This fast but unreliable car, which Senna drove during the 1985 season, is in our opinion one of the most beautiful to ever have gone around a circuit. It gave the Brazilian 7 pole positions and 2 victories. Today the presence of the games can be felt everywhere: exhibitions about them are arranged in prestigious museums, lyrics of pop songs reference them, famous orchestras play tunes composed for them, movies base themselves on them and famous actors line up to voice them. As a form of story telling, some have already described video games as the novels of the new generations. Admittedly, the games 1983 NINTENDO NES have a long way to go before there will be a Nobel prize dedicated to them because too many developers still seem unable to avoid the appeal of the puerile, macho or kitsch, but nevertheless it’s hard to refute these claims all together. Thanks to this, GoldenEye was both one of the most entertaining and one of the most convivial games of its time. If the player preferred to play alone (or had no friends), the solo mode provided an equally thrilling experience based on the storyline of the James Bond movie of the same name. It is also worth noting that GoldenEye is one of very few licensed, movie-based videogames to have been well received by critics and players alike. Nintendo 64 The Nintendo 64 did not only impress through its 3D graphics, it also made it possible for as many as four players to play at the same time. Even more importantly, the 64 is the home platform for some of the most acclaimed games ever made and this more than compensates for the fact that there were comparatively few games to choose from. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time It is easy to understand why many consider Ocarina of Time to be the greatest videogame ever made. It takes the sense of space and openness of the previous Zelda games to new levels and allows the player to explore the vast world of Hyrule and its long list of quests. Equally importantly though is the game’s gripping storyline: the plot takes place in two different time periods and both the narration and the gameplay are made more interesting as the protagonist gets to toggle between present and past. Some may say that not having played Ocarina of Time is as bad as not having read The Great Gatsby or Heart of Darkness. We don’t agree; it’s actually much, much worse. 09 Xbox The Xbox marked the beginning of Microsofts venture into the world of consoles. While it never became as popular as the Playstation 2, it was still a success with approximately 16 million units sold in the US and 24 million unites sold worldwide. More importantly, the Xbox introduced the online gaming service Xbox Live which, among other things, allowed players to play together online and download games. Mario Kart 64 While building on its successful Super Nintendo predecessor, Mario Kart 64 boasts better graphics, more varied tracks and the ability to have four players competing at the same time. The goal is simple: get around the track quicker than the other racers by using any means at your disposal, including hurling target-seeking turtle shells at your opponents. While we may recognize the driving style from the streets of Beijing, we are still waiting for science to develop those turtle shells. revolution at the time. The game really stood out through the variety of possible movements, which meant the interactions with the environments were almost infinite. Furthermore, the game’s use of lights and shadows was a novelty at the time, especially because it had a real influence on the way the game was played. Graphically, the game was also stunning; even many years after its release it would remain the most beautiful game available on Xbox. In Splinter Cell, the Metal Gear series found a challenger able to make its Snake look a bit less solid. Favorite Games Beyond Good And Evil A commercial flop but well received by critics, Beyond Good and Evil sends the player on a quest to stop an alien invasion and overturn a dictatorship. The idealistic story combined with the game’s mix of action, sneaking and puzzle-solving made it one of the best of its time. What’s more, it also deserves bonus points for its smart female protagonist; gone (or at least almost gone) are the days when girls just sat around waiting for some chubby plumber to come rescue them. Halo: Combat Evolved Microsoft set out to rule the world of console gaming with this one franchise and, to a certain extent, succeeded. At the time, nobody had ever seen a game recreate the PC experience like Halo. It was massive, beautiful and breathtaking, causing PC gamers to grumble out of jealousy. The AI created for Halo: Combat Evolved was more advanced than anything that had been created up until that time. Enemies were so smart, it felt like they were actually thinking for themselves and made the replay value nearly endless. Moreover, Combat Evolved had an extensive vehicular combat system that could have been a game in on its own. People had never seen anything like this on a console before. Splinter Cell Based on a Tom Clancy’s scenario, the game follows hero Sam Fisher as he travels around the world to counter a powerful terrorist organization. It was made to be the “Metal Gear killer”, and although it didn’t quite achieve that goal, it did still represent a small technical The PS3 along with the Xbox 360, has completely redefined what people think about gaming in terms of online accessibility and functionality. The era when everything you played on a console was burned onto a disc is now over. Online systems like the PlayStation Network have introduced the ability to buy and play complete games without having to leave your couch, not to mention the advent of downloadable content that can expand games exponentially. 32 Favorite Games GTA V GTA V takes the now familiar GTA concept to new heights. The player is free to hijack cars and complete other missions in a virtual world that has never been more open, accessible or graphically stunning. What is more, the game is played through several characters and this makes it both faster and more tactical. Last of Us The game takes place twenty years after a pandemic that radically transformed civilization. Infected humans run amok and survivors kill one another for sustenance and weapons – literally whatever they can get their hands on. The Last of Us is a masterful tale of two individuals who are both authentic and flawed. It creates one of the most memorable video game experiences ever played and it is believed by certain critics to be the best game to come out in the last ten years. God of War III Set in the realm of brutal Greek mythology, God of War III is a single-player game which allows players to take on the role of an ex-Spartan warrior, Kratos, as he scales through the intimidating heights of Mt. Olympus and the dark depths of Hell to seek revenge on those who have betrayed him. God of War III is the last episode of the franchise finishing the story of Kratos. It is considered to be one of the best games of the beat them all genre. As the first high-definition game console ever introduced, the Xbox 360 represents a milestone in videogame hardware history. It represents a first-time shift in standalone platforms to crisp, clean, high-definition graphics with advanced shading and physics effects. While these features were long-since a staple of PC gaming, they had never before been seen in the console market. Additionally, the Xbox 360 was also the first console to hit the market with an integrated wireless controller system. Although wireless controller solutions were present in previous game systems, wireless connectivity could only be achieved through external dongle attachments. Fable II When it feels like the realities of everyday life are overwhelming you, you may take comfort in the fact that there is at least a game where you are in total control of your destiny and of the way others perceive you.Throughout Fable II, the player faces choices which will influence the outcome of the game as well as his or her physical appearance and social status. With a large number of side quests available and a capacity to absorb you for hours, there is a significant risk, however, that this game will have an impact on your social standing in real life too. And not for the better. Gears of War Gears of War blends tactical action with survival horror and thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing story of humankind’s epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. Gears of War cuts straight to the chase and its innovative controls are so intuitive that you’re fighting at full speed before you even realize it. Mass Effect II The game takes place within the Milky Way galaxy during the 22nd century, where humanity is threatened by an insectoid species known as the Collectors. The player assumes the role of Commandant Shepard, an elite human soldier who must construct and gain the loyalty of a diverse team in order to defeat the enemy in a suicide mission. With the use of a completed saved games from its predecessor, the player can impact the story of the game in numerous ways. Critics praised multiple aspects of the game, including its interactive storytelling, characterization, and combat. The game received numerous year-end awards, including Game of the Year at the 14th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, and Best Game at the 2011 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. Realizing the market was filling up with consoles vying to be the most powerful, Nintendo decided to fight back by changing the rules of the game. Instead of trying to compete on power, the Japanese company created the Wii, a machine completely different from its competitors. Most notably, it had movement sensitive controllers which changed the way the games were played: instead of simply using their hands, the players could now be required to aim at things on the screen or to perform movements involving the whole body. This also allowed Nintendo to broaden its target to include those who weren’t seen as typical gamers, such as more senior people or people looking for a different way to get some exercise. This is also reflected in the Wii’s sales figures and, as of 2013, the Wii had sold more units worldwide than its main rivals the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. Favorite Games The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess This game was originally conceived for the Gamecube, but was perfectly adapted for the Wii. Twilight Princess is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the saga. Some fans may consider the game to be too close to the earlier Ocarina of Time, but others would surely have complained had the game been too different. Nevertheless, Twilight Princess was the perfect response to the fans of its predecessor, The Wind Waker, with a realistic style and an ambiance close to heroic fantasy. Okami It’s essentially a game about a dog on a quest that involves feeding small animals, making trees blossom and fighting enemies with the aid of a magical calligraphy brush. There is something very refreshing about that. Wii Sports The main thing about the Wii was that it required the player to move about much more than any other console and the very basic Wii sports really showcases this. The game epitomizes what the Wii experience is about: the graphics may be simpler and the gameplay somewhat naïve, but it’s a great way to have fun with your friends during a coffee break at work. And it’s great exercise for those of us who never indulge in, say, tennis or boxing (or any other sport for that matter) in real life. 34 Favorite Games with no gaps in them. It sounds easy, it sounds simple and it might even sound… boring. Yes, that’s what it might sound like but you would be dead wrong to believe it. Tetris is not only a never ending challenge but it’s also as gripping and addictive as Pringles chips, hard drugs and gambling combined together. Fortunately it’s much safer than these other options though. sold worldwide. One of the main reasons why the PlayStation 2 was (and still is) so great is its game library composed of well over 3500 games. Many great game series were continued or started on the PlayStation 2 and many of these were also released exclusively for it. Most of these still hold up extremely well, making the advances achieved by later consoles look quite insignificant. Favorite Games 05 Nintendo Game Boy Many players probably look back on their Game Boy days as a period of mixed feelings similar to those associated with a sibling. There were days when this handheld device could drive you crazy: there weren’t any colors, many of the games were simply impossible to finish and the screen, which wasn’t backlit, forced the player to search and fight for light like a seedling on an Amazonian forest floor. In fact, even with the best of lighting conditions, visibility often remained an issue as you had to struggle to distinguish what was what on the murky screen. In the end though, the Game Boy had more than enough redeeming features to compensate for these sources of frustration. Even before it became endowed with a color screen, it had the power to save you from boredom anywhere (or at least where there was a lamp) and with more than a thousand games to choose from, even the pickiest of players could be sure to find something to suit his or her taste. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening: The adventure begins with the game’s protagonist, Link, being shipwrecked and stranded on the mysterious Koholint Island. In order to leave the island, Link must collect eight instruments hidden in different dungeons and guarded by nightmarish creatures. Part of the game’s greatness comes from this mix of adventure, action and puzzle solving. Equally important though are the game’s more tacit elements. Thanks to its compelling script and design, Link’s Awakening is full of poetry, vigor and quiet melancholy which are efficiently highlighted by the strong soundtrack. Tetris: An introduction to this classic game seems almost superfluous but, just in case you spent the last thirty years in hibernation or in jail, no worries, it’s so simple you’ll catch up in no time! Simply put, the player needs to manipulate blocks of different shapes falling from the top of the screen as to form horizontal lines Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 The player must help Wario, an antagonist of an earlier Super Mario game, to accumulate wealth in order to buy a castle. Just as the objective is very different compared to other games of the Mario franchise, so is also the means by which it is achieved. Wario makes his way through the levels with brute force, tackling enemies and augmenting his abilities with different helmets. It’s a fun crash course in genuine selfishness. The PlayStation 2 built on the success of the first PlayStation (with which it was backwards compatible) but eventually went on to surpass its predecessor and become the best selling console ever made with over 155 million units GTA 3 Five years after the release of the first GTA game, the game’s producer, Rockstar Games, decided to create a sort of remake in 3D. The result, GTA 3, was a game which kept the immorality of its predecessor but added a much stronger and more immersive scenario, inspired by the movies of Tarantino and Scorsese. In all honesty though, stealing cars, killing people and wrecking havoc in the city soon proved to be the game’s most compelling aspect for many players. While this may seem quite troubling, there is some comfort in the thought that these people found a harmless output for their frustrations. And given what a huge commercial success GTA 3 was, it seems fair to say that the game helped avoid countless calamities and maybe even a revolution or two. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Set in the 1960’s, decades before its predecessors, Metal Gear Solid 3 let’s the player slip into the skin of the agent Naked Snake (later known by the bombastic, and somewhat silly, code name Big Boss), the father of the series’ usual main character, Solid Snake. The change of main character is not the only thing to set the series’ third installment: the player now has to manage without the sophisticated radar that normally tracks the position of enemy soldiers and, equally exhilarating, the game setting has moved from stale bunkers and corridors to colorful outdoor locations. Moreover, while sneaking and stealth remain key, the player is able to counter-attack if exposed, bringing more choice and variation to the gameplay. Being a prequel, Snake Eater also benefits greatly from not having to worry too much about the plots of the earlier games of the series, and this makes a significant difference in a game series known for its convoluted storyline. Shadow of the Colossus In order to bring a girl back from the dead, the game’s protagonist, Wander, sets out on a quest to find and kill sixteen powerful and often gigantic colossi. Instead of following clues or advice given in some stilted dialogue, the player finds his opponents guided by a ray of light emanating from Wander’s sword. As you ride across the grandiose landscapes and bring down the rather harmless colossi one by one, you soon realize that Shadow of the Colossus is an epic game that is not only full of beauty but also of melancholy. As a console of the so-called “fifth generation of gaming”, the Sony PlayStation would be competing against the more powerful Nintendo 64. Still, the PlayStation games usually felt more realistic and mature than the games of its main rival, which by comparison would be perceived as childish and colorful adventures. It seemed the PlayStation was for (young) adults whereas the Nintendo was for kids. The fact that the PlayStation didn’t use cartridges but CDs (which were cheaper and allowed for 36 ogy, but also the gameplay and all its related parts. The battles are a perfect mix of oldschool Active Time Battles and the new, functional idea of Materia, enabling you to create all kinds of crazy magical combos. The in-game cinematics, combat system, story, mini games and various other aspects of Final Fantasy VII were all nothing short of magnificent. more storage space) also contributed to this impression and made the console feel more modern. As it turns out, Sony’s decisions were not only avant-garde but also commercially sound: the PlayStation not only outsold the Nintendo 64 but it also instigated the transition towards CD-based consoles and revealed the importance of the adult gamer market. Favorite Games This essentially meant the developers had to use their spare time, working long extra hours to create the game. As it turns out, it definitely was worth it: Mega Man 2 is not only considered to be the best of the Mega Man series but also one of the best games ever released on NES. Favorite Games Driver Most people think GTA 3 was the first 3D car pursuit game in an open world and, unfortunately, this is completely wrong. The game that would more justly deserve this distinction is in fact called Driver and was created by the game developer Reflections in 1998. The game revolves around Tanner, an infiltrated cop in a drug cartel, and his missions leading him to different cities which are totally open for the player to explore in 3D perspective. Together with a sharp and intuitive gameplay, this meant the game was nothing short of impressive. However, the success of the GTA series – and the fact that the first GTA game (a horrible and unplayable 2D game) had already been released one year prior to Driver – meant the game sadly doesn’t enjoy the place it deserves in the history books of gaming. Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid, which was released in 1998, is often lauded not only as one of the very best PlayStation games but as one of the best games of all time. The game, which popularized the stealth genre, follows the protagonist, Solid Snake, as he infiltrates a military base and, eventually, thwarts the schemes of the terrorist group that has seized it. Given that it’s a game based on stealth, it isn’t very surprising that the sneaking is rewarding on its own. However, just in case you’re not much of a sneaky person, you may be glad to learn that the game is spiced up by tense boss fights and a captivating plot. Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII has achieved almost godlike adoration. As millions of gamers’ first Role Playing Game (RPG), it comes complete with the only defense you can’t break – nostalgia. This heated affection (and contrary hatred) has made VII into something it’s not, namely “the best RPG of all time.” Still, in spite of its handful of flaws, there is simply no denying the overwhelming quality of not just the technol- In a time when microwave ovens were believed to give you cancer and the back of a milk car ton was one of the most efficient ways to spread a message, the Nintendo Enter tainment System reignited the market for videogames and ushered in an era of growth which lasts to the present day. One key component of the console’s success was its user-friendliness. Keyboards and floppy disk drives were rejected in favor of car tridge game packs and simple controllers. Moreover, Nintendo worked to gain consumer confidence by avoiding exaggerating the technical or visual qualities of the games as well as by implementing strict control of the games’ quality and content. Given the simplicity of the console and the strict policy of censoring profanity, sexual, religious, or political content in games, it is hardly a surprise that the NES was primarily marketed to children. While some may be tempted to denounce such a strategy on moral grounds, it is wor th remembering that this decision created a generation of gamers, who, as they grew up, would bring videogames into the mainstream of society and ensure that the NES imagery attained iconic status in the process. Seen from this perspective, all subsequent videogames and consoles owe a large par t of their existence to the NES. Darkwing Duck Yes, there are NES games which are more iconic and which hold far greater importance (e.g. Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, just to name two obvious examples) but the fact remains that Darkwing Duck is a tremendously entertaining game which can be played over and over with as much pleasure every time. In the style of Mega Man, the game lets the player choose the order of the levels, which take us to rooftops, jungles, a luxurious yacht and even the sewers. These varied levels, together with the strong gameplay and memorable bosses, ensure Darkwing Duck is always equally exciting. Mega Man 2 The story behind the making of Mega Man 2 is one of those inspiring tales of rogue product development. As the first Mega Man hadn’t been very successful, the game’s developer, Capcom, only allowed the development team to create a sequel on the condition that they did so while also working on other projects. Super Mario Bros. 3 The third installment of the Super Mario Bros series once again sees Mario on a mission to stop the evil Bowser. This time, however, it’s more fun than ever before as the game improves on the graphics of its predecessors and introduces a range of new items and abilities. Moreover, the game also introduces new characters – most notably the wicked Koopalings, which were all named after famous Western singers or composers such as Roy Orbison and Ludwig van Beethoven – which would reappear in later games. When the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was launched in the early Nineties, it was a huge improvement over its predecessor, the NES. It would probably be fair to say that the Super Nintendo was less significant in that it mainly continued what the NES had started; however, it did so in such a superb way. Many of the game series from the NES had been carried over to the Super Nintendo and the radiant graphics boasted by these made the older versions obsolete. Even after the release of the more powerful PlayStation, the Super Nintendo was still able to stand its ground thanks to its library of high quality games such as Super Mario World, Street Fighter II or Donkey Kong Country. The latter also had the merits of helping to usher in 3D graphics and proved that the SNES could challenge early PlayStation games in terms of graphics. In spite of being over twenty years old, a great number of the Super Nintendo games still remain a pleasure to play. In fact, we would claim that the Super Nintendo is the most timeless console ever built and it is this quality that earns it the number one spot on our list and, indeed, in our hearts. Favorite Games The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past There are many reasons why all kinds of people agree that this is one of the best games ever made. Some people enjoy the story and the puzzle solving while some may emphasize how it introduced the concept of parallel worlds into the Zelda series. There are even those who go on about the grapple hook, which appears in the game, and what a great weapon it is. In the end though, all that matters is that A Link to the Past is a game that has the guaranteed ability to keep you happily occupied for hours. 38 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time No matter if you were a big fan of the heroes in a half shell or if you couldn’t stand their pizza munching faces, you are still likely to enjoy Turtles in Time. Each turtle has its own strengths and weaknesses, choose your favorite, invite a friend (or don’t, it’s their loss) and throw yourself into a swashbuckling adventure that will take you from the prehistoric landscapes of the dinosaurs and all the way to the space stations of the future and then back again to the present (or, well, to be more specific, 1992). The gameplay is simple but still a delight. Only two buttons and the directional pad are really involved but the player is still able to perform a large range of movements by combining them. There is no need to ask for more and it’s probably in realization of this that the game’s protagonists decide to return to ’92 rather than stay in the future. Yoshi’s Island One of the main strengths of Yoshi’s Island is the game’s graphic style. Released after the introduction of 3D graphics, the game opted for a cartoonish, childlike look with decors that looked as if they had been drawn with crayons and felt-pens. This choice in favor of offering something different rather than competing on novelty is one of the reasons why the game still looks fresh compared to the 3D innovators of the time (such as Donkey Kong Country). And of course the game is also a pleasure to play. The fact that the protagonist dinosaur gets ahead by producing and throwing eggs made of swallowed enemies is not only very innovative but also, when you think of it, a little bit… repulsive. 40 1 The videogame character Donkey Kong has an odd name considering that he’s an ape. Why is he called “Donkey”? This gives the viewers the opportunity to discover Darkplace Hospital, a sinister place where nothing has been the same since the gates of hell were opened in its cafeteria. With its vintage looks and cheap special effects, Darkplace may at first glance seem to be a horrible horror wreckage from the Eighties but the fact that it was created in 2004 gives a good hint of its true, humoristic nature. Hello Ladies Created by: Stephen Merchant, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky Starring: Stephen Merchant, Christine Woods and Nate Torrence Stephen Merchant has created yet another brilliant comedy series based on failure and humiliation. Hello Ladies may share more than one common trait with Extras, the TV show Merchant created with Ricky Gervais in 2005, but then again if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Movie: Grand Budapest Hotel Directed by Wes Anderson Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, Adrien Brody, Jeff Goldblum In Wes Anderson’s latest opus, we are introduced to the charismatic and gentle concierge of the eponymous resort, Monsieur Gustave H, and the lobby boy Zero. When one of the hotel’s frequent guests dies, the pair is thrown into an adventure that involves a stolen painting, a frame-up, a trip to jail, a secret society of concierges and fascist militants. In spite of being Anderson’s perhaps most melancholic film, The Grand Budapest Hotel is also one of his funniest as it abounds with the typical dialogue, quirky jokes and odd situations that we have come to associate with the director. The result is a movie that will keep you transfixed until the end as Wes Anderson climbs to the heights of Fantastic Mr. Fox and delivers one of the very best cinema experiences of the year. 44 SIZZLING HOT PLATE The Conservatory of International Style and Cultural Arts 北 京 天 爱 艺 术 培 训 ABOUT CISCA The Conservatory of International Style and Cultural Arts (CISCA) was founded in 2009 by Creative Director, International Fashion Designer, Choreographer and Ballerina Flora Zeta Cheong-Leen (Dr. h.c.).
