CHOCOWINITY EMS ANNUAL FUND-RAISER Good Citizen Award
Bonus Xtra Edition Published by the Cypress Landing Homeowners Association D EC 20 13 Good Citizen Award Goes to the Veltkamp Family The Veltkamp Family (from left): Jeff, Sally, Ryan, and Tyler, receiving their award from Rich Richman (at right). (Not present: Zachary) This year one of the Cypress Landing residents' award nominees—the Veltkamp family—was definitely deserving, but just didn’t seem to fit the pattern for any of our annual awards. So the Homeowners Association (HOA) Board decided to add a new award… the Good Citizen Award. This award is intended to recognize a Cypress Landing resident or family who loves the community and finds many ways to express this love without seeking recognition or compensation. The recipient will be known to be a good neighbor, often offering help to neighbors and others in the community, especially those who may not be able to help themselves. The recipient may voluntarily assist with recovery from natural disasters and storms or assist in preparations for community activities. The recipient seeks out ways to make Cypress Landing a better place in which to live. These good deeds are performed without fanfare as a natural part of the recipient’s daily life. Orofino, Chocowinity Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Winter holiday time is here, and it is time for the annual Chocowinity Emergency Medical Services (EMS) fund-raiser. Last year’s event raised money for the purchase of a much needed upgrade to the cardiac monitor that is used on the second ambulance. On behalf of the EMS squad, we thank you for your generous donations. During the past year, Chocowinity EMS responded to over 75 calls for assistance to the residents of Cypress Landing. This year’s goal is to procure a battery-operated stretcher for the second ambulance similar to the one that is shown in the picture. This stretcher will allow easier transport of patients in and out of the ambulance. A normal stretcher can weigh up to 80 pounds without the patient on it, taxing the backs of many an EMT. The Chocowinity EMS squad is also looking to upgrade the radios and pagers, which we were unable to do last year. These are a vital tool in patient care. During the past year, Chocowinity EMS responded to over 75 calls for assistance to the residents of Cypress Landing. L to R: Joshua Ingram, EMT-I; Samantha Moore, EMT-I; and Dana Hunnewell, EMT-P and Captain of Chocowinity EMS. Please send/bring your check, payable to Chocowinity EMS, to the Cypress Landing HOA office, 100 Marina Drive, Chocowinity, NC 27817. We thank you in advance for your generous donations and help in securing equipment that will not only benefit the residents of Cypress Landing, but all of the residents of Beaufort County. Page 2 — The Landing / Bonus Xtra Edition / December 2013 Good Citizen Award Goes to The Veltkamp Family (contd from page 1) The following is from Rich Richman's November presentation and the wording from the nomination that was submitted to the HOA Board by a Cypress Landing resident: About three years ago, the Veltkamp family moved to Cypress Landing. They became the neighbors you always hoped would move in next door. They are friendly, respectful, and ALWAYS looking for ways to help. Over the past three years, they have repeatedly offered their assistance to individuals, committees, and neighbors. Their sons have become the “muscle” in helping to decorate, and un-decorate, the Bay Club at Christmas. In addition, they are always available to decorate the community entrances for the holidays by hanging wreaths, swags, and other decorations. During Hurricane Irene, the entire family spent days helping neighbors remove fallen trees and storm debris. They then made it their mission to search out and find elderly families and widows who especially needed help in removing storm debris, limbs, and trees. Somehow, they also found time to help clean up the golf course. They would not accept any money for their efforts. Over the past several years, two of their neighborhood families have had major health issues, plus one neighbor lost her spouse. The entire family jumped right in, making meals, helping out at these neighbors’ homes, driving to doctor appointments, and even riding in the ambulance in the middle of the night. The boys took care of lawns, dog sat, and trimmed shrubs. Despite the mother’s objection, one neighbor insisted on paying the boys for her yard work. All of the funds collected went to a special “Happy Birthday,” for this neighbor, complete with birthday greetings drawn in chalk on her driveway, and an estimated 15 dozen rose bouquets. The family is very unassuming. They only want to help others and make Cypress Landing a great place to live, while expecting nothing in return. As the parents tell their sons, “It’s just being a good neighbor.” They are all fine examples of what the Good Citizen Award stands for, and Board of Directors is proud to present this new award to the Veltkamp Family: Jeff & Sally and their three sons, Zack, Tyler, and Ryan, who live at 307 Neuse Drive. An Interview with Robert Passanisi, one of Merrill's Mauraders in WWII In 1943, 3,000 men answered President Franklin D. Roosevelt's call for volunteers to go on a dangerous, secret mission to Burma to disrupt Japanese supply lines. Only 200 of these Army rangers returned home. Known as “Merrill’s Marauders” marched through 1,000 miles of Burmese jungle to fulfill their mission. Robert Passanisi, who happens to be Cypress Landing Resident Joanne Broderick's 89-year-old uncle, was one of Merrill's Maurader's in World War II, and CBS recently interviewed him. Scott Moody was recently presented with a plaque in appreciation of his 10 years of service to Cypress Landing as Facilities Manager. The plaque, presented by Mark Eakes at the November Homeowners Association Meeting, said "In Appreciation for Service and Dedication to the Cypress Landing Homeowners Association." A very appreciative Moody said, "I want to thank the Cypress Landing community for giving me an opportunity to serve fo the past 10 years. A very smart person once said, “Find something you love to do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” This is how I’ve felt about my time at Cypress Landing (excluding water leaks!). I must acknowledge the residents & volunteers who have made my job very interesting and a joy to accomplish. A special thank you to the Board for my award and the generosity of all within Cypress Landing. You are who make this a very special place – to live and to work. Thank you.
