In response to increased demand and a commitment to the community, Dr. Scott Sheftel and his team opened the new office of HealthySkin Dermatology, which has been in practice in Southern Arizona for over 17 years. It has been serving the Green Valley community for over five years, initially seeing patients through Carondelet facilities. The new office, located at 18855 S. La Canada Drive in Sahuarita, is a 2,600 square foot stateof-the-art facility offering medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. The nine medical dermatology providers who staff this office offer full body skin exams and specialize in skin diseases involving the hair, body and nails. “We noticed several years ago an increase in patients from the Sahuarita and Green Valley area who were choosing to commute to central Tucson to receive their dermatological care. We realized that we could better serve this area if we had a physical office to take care of the patients that have been with us for many years,” comments Sheftel. HealthySkin also specializes in skin cancer and treats all skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema, both teenage and adult acne as well as other skin problems. The office also offers cosmetic services, such as facial peels and cosmetic injectables. The Sahuarita office compliments the main office in Tucson which offers comprehensive skin care services. The Tucson office also offers Mohs surgery and brachytherapy radiation treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers as well as lasers for skin care services. “HealthySkin Dermatology” Continued on Page 4 Dr. Sheftel of HealthySkin Dermatology Local Teacher Receives Milken Educator Award Walden Grove High School Teacher, Christopher Laughland, was recently honored as a recipient of the Milken Educator Award. The award is part of a national program founded by the Milken Family Foundation, which “rewards and inspires excellence in the world of education by honoring top educators around the country with $25,000 unrestricted awards.” This very special presentation took place at an assembly at the high school on Wednesday, January 8th. Arizona State Superintendent John Huppenthal and other officials and representatives from the Arizona Department of Education were present at the assembly; which most teachers, students and guests thought was designed to celebrate the young school’s academic progress. Skin cancer is very easily treated if caught early, but it can be very serious if left unaddressed. Our goal is to expand our Sahuarita clinic to offer a full range of skin services offering comprehensive medical skin care. I get tremendous satisfaction and gratification working with patients of all ages to treat and manage their skin conditions.” The HealthySkin staff has enjoyed working in the Sahuarita and Green Valley communities. Thomas Brett Davis, PA-C, reflects, “I love going to Sahuarita. The patients are all really kind and they have that down-home feeling. They remind me of the kind of folks I grew up around. ” Dr. Sheftel and the HealthySkin Dermatology staff HealthySkin has been providing medical and cosmetic dermatology services to Tucson and its surrounding communities for over 17 years. The first office opened in 1996 in Central Tucson. It has grown to five locations throughout Southern Arizona including: Tucson, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, Willcox and Globe. It was in 1885 when the recognition of President George Washington first became annual celebration. The holiday was originally established in 1799, after his death. Because George Washington was viewed as a significant person in American history, George Washington’s actual birthday, February 22 became a day of remembrance. However, the day was moved in 1971 as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This was an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Not only is George Washington’s birthday in February, but Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan and William Henry were born in the month of February. There are some states who celebrate each individual President but President’s Day is now viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. Presidents, past and present. President’s Day is still known as “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. If you are one who gets to have the day off, remember why you’re having a free day! Amongst his fellow teachers, peers, and students, this announcement caught Laughland by complete surprise. As he stepped forward to receive his award and a giant check for $25,000, he was met with a standing ovation by all in attendance. Greeted by school board members and Walden Grove principal, Teresa Hill, Laughland struggled to find words to describe how he was feeling. He later commented on the award and its significance to him saying, “Obviously the money’s great, but getting recognition for this and just reinforcing what I do for a living is priceless.” Renowned for its national recognition and prestigious network of past recipients, the award brings with it many benefits in addition to the financial reward. It targets early to mid-career teachers, principals, and other educators, and celebrates their previous accomplishments and vast potential for the future. After starting his teaching career in Phoenix in 2006, he returned home to Indianapolis, where he remained for four years before returning to Arizona and joining the team at Walden Grove. As student council advisor and baseball coach for Walden Grove, Laughland’s commitment to the school and its growing student body extends well beyond the classroom. Sahuarita Unified School District Superintendent, Dr. Manny Valenzuela, said of Laughland, “This prestigious national award is a recognition of Mr. Laughland’s tireless commitment, innovative practices, and genuine concern for the good of students. He is an amazing ambassador for the teaching profession and our community.” Milken Educator Award Winner Mr. Laughland with students Tubac Festival of the Arts The 55th annual Tubac Festival of the Arts, Arizona’s longest running festival, will be held on February 5 – 9, 2014 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day; admission is free. The Sahuarita Times February 2014 11 BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT FINANCIAL FOCUS Tips on Choosing – and Using – a Tax Preparer When you first started out in your adult life, things were probably pretty simple: no house, no spouse, no kids, few investments. So, when it came time to do your taxes, you might have gotten along just fine by using Form 1040EZ - which, as the name suggests, is pretty darn easy to use. Fast forward a few years, however, and here you are today: family, mortgage, 401(k), IRA, stocks, bonds, debts, charitable contributions. Now, when you sit down to do your taxes, they’re looking a lot more like your high school trigonometry. If that’s the case, it might be time for you to get some help. However, anyone can claim to be a “tax preparer.” How can you find the one that’s right for you? Here are a few tips: •Check Credentials While your brother-in-law, your barber and your daughter’s friend who is really good in math all may be able to do your taxes, none of them are going to be as familiar with tax laws as a CPA, a tax attorney or an “enrolled agent” (an individual licensed by the U.S. Treasury Department to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service). So, before you hand over your tax returns to someone, ask about his or her credentials and experience. If your taxes are too complicated for you to handle, you need a professional. •Get References Ask your friends, relatives and co-workers who they use for their taxes, and if they’re satisfied with this person. •Avoid Preparers who Promise “Big Refunds” No reputable tax preparer can guarantee you a big refund - or any refund - before looking at your taxes. Stay away from these people. Also, avoid tax preparers who base their fee on a percentage of the amount of the refund. While refunds are nice, you don’t want one that might invite serious questions, or an audit, from the IRS. Get Organized Once you have chosen a professional to do your taxes, what can you expect? Can you just toss a shoebox full of receipts, investment statements and pay stubs at your preparer and then wait for your return? It’s not that easy. Even if you use a tax preparer, you’re going to have to do some work, too. Try to be as organized as possible with your documentation. For example, you may want one envelope devoted solely to investment information, one to earnings, one to charitable gifts, one to other deductions, and so on. The more organized you are, the easier it will be for your tax professional to complete your return in the most favorable manner possible. However, don’t assume that what you’re giving to your preparer is sufficient. If you have sold shares of stock, make sure you’ve got the cost-basis of those shares available. If this information is not printed on your statements, call your investment professional to get it. Here’s one final tip: See your tax preparer as soon as possible. Once the tax season gets into late March, you’ll find few people anywhere as harassed and harried as tax preparers - so give them the time they need to help you. WANTING TO SEND YOUR KIDS TO COLLEGE? The Sahuarita Times February 2014 13 Pulse Creating Life by Design – A Women’s Conference There comes a time in life where the choice to downsize, let go of the old, clear out what is no longer needed becomes a point of choice. It is a natural part of evolution; we stop collecting stuff and begin to settle into what is real – our heart’s desires, bucket lists, relationships, inner values, dreams and our next contribution. By saying YES to yourself, you can mine and uncover the more authentic self that is buried underneath the roles, identities, belief systems and relationships. Life by Design” is all about living more consciously and at choice. Learn four steps to create a better life by accepting your true identity, living from vision and intuition, using powerful words and standing in your own authority. Discover your ability to create a life of joy, abundance and love by using positive words of creation with awareness and power. Find out how to use the fear that stops you from truly experiencing life to develop the courage to be or have or do anything you desire. Would you like to experience more choice in what’s “happening” in your life? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed at life’s circumstances and wonder how you can change them? Perhaps, you’ve noticed that many people watch circumstances control their lives and respond powerlessly as if life is happening “to” them. There is another way. “Creating “Creating Life by Design – A Women’s Conference” will be facilitated by Dr. Janette Freeman author of “Why Did This Happen to Me Again?” and co-author with Dr. Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra and Terry Cole Whittaker of “Wake Up and Live the Life You Love – In Spirit.” Having attended the Oneness University in Southern India several times, she was initiated as an Oneness Facilitator then Oneness Trainer. She is trained in NeuroLinguistic Programming, an Access Bars Facilitator and skilled in powerful transformational methodologies. Dr. Janette learned universal and powerful life-changing lessons on her recent year-long journey thought parts of Central America, SE Asia and India. Your life path is determined by the choices you make; you can take the journey alone or take with the help of other women. Expanding Your Horizons Registration for Expanding Your Horizons, a nationwide conference to encourage young ladies to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). will begin the first week in February at the area’s public and private schools. Although it is designed primarily for sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls and their parents, it is gender inclusive. The conference will be held Saturday, March 8 at Sahuarita Middle School from 8:30 am to 12:30 am. Cost is $5 per student. Scholarships are available. After a successful EYH conference in 2013, the Green Valley branch of the American Association of University Women is once again co-sponsoring the event with the able assistance of Women in Science and Engineering (W.I.S.E.) at the University of Arizona. Through hands-on workshops led by professional women and U of A interns who are in STEM careers, the students will conduct experiments that are both fun and informative and will learn the educational requirements for the careers. On March 8 some of the fields they will explore are the science of beauty, hovercrafting, astronomy, chemistry, meteorology and many more exciting STEM careers traditionally held by men. Students and parents will attend a kick off presentation by keynoter Deanna L. Lewis of the U of A, a graduate associate in the College of Public Health and facilitator for the STEM Institute 2011-12. Her topic is STEM Equity. The students will then go to two workshops of their choice. During that time their parents will attend a session on financial aid for college and how to help their students decide on the right college prep courses. After last year’s EYH conference, Superintendant Valenzuela said, “We are so blessed to have the support of the community that gives so much to help enrich the education of our young people and help them in the process of goal setting and planning for their own futures.” Trico Electric Cooperative Annual Meeting Saturday, March 29, 2014 Casino Del Sol Ballroom 5655 West Valencia Road, Tucson, AZ 85757 8:30am Registration 10am Meeting Meghan Walton, Sahuarita Middle School; Elizabeth McGibbon, Continental School; Erin Jordan and Jacqueline Righetti watch as the meteorologist experiments with combining hot air, ice cubes and a balloon.
