enforcement veteran John Noland to lead the
Sahuarita Police Department, replacing Chief
John Harris, who retired in Sept. 2014.

the Awards Ceremony is at 10:30 am.
“We have an excellent community for athletic
events,” says Michelle Moreno, campus director
of Rancho Sahuarita. “Triathlons in particular
are well suited to Rancho Sahuarita because we
have beautiful and safe areas for the cycling and
running legs, and obviously Sahuarita Lake is
unmatched in the area for triathlon swimming.”
According to Moreno, food trucks will be on-site
at Club Rancho Sahuarita for hungry spectators.

Be Snake-Wise this Spring and Summer
As you are all aware, the days are getting longer and
warmer and with warm weather comes rattlesnakes.
Rattlesnakes are most active during the months of
April through October, when the temperature is
between 70° and 90°F; at this time of year, be on
the lookout for them during the day. However, as
the temperatures get warmer, many rattlesnakes
become nocturnal. As the chances of a snake
encounter increases, it’s a good idea to get to know
this creature and how to stay safe if you ever come
across one.

What to do if bitten by a rattlesnake:
Do remain calm.
Do remove jewelry and watches from affected area.
Do keep limb at level below the heart.
Do decrease activity.
Do get to medical facility ASAP.
What NOT to do if bitten by a rattlesnake:
Do NOT apply ice
Do NOT use a tourniquet or constriction band
Do NOT administer alcohol or drugs
Do NOT try and capture or kill the snake.
Rattlesnake bites all receive the same anti-venom.

Sahuarita in 2010. At the time,
the Sahuarita Lake Triathlon
was a qualifier in the “Best of the
U.S.” triathlon events. Before the
last triathlon in 2010, Sahuarita
Lake had hosted triathlons for
nearly ten years, beginning with
the “Rancho Sahuarita Triathlon”
back in 2002.

Farmer’s Market Comes to Sahuarita Road
Founded in 1919 Paris immediately after the
cessation of hostilities in World War I, the
American Legion is largest wartime veteran’s
service organization in America. The mission
of the American Legion is to promote and
sponsor scholarships and veterans help programs,
mentoring youth, and promoting patriotism and
devotion to veterans. Currently there are over
14,000 American Legion posts worldwide.
American Legion Post 109, located in Corona,
AZ south of I-10 and north of East Sahuarita
Rd. received their charter in January of 1979 and
currently boasts 800 legion members, over 200
Sons of the American Legion, over 300 American
Legion Auxiliary members, and one of the largest
American Legion Riders organizations in Arizona.
In addition to helping veterans, Post 109 is always
looking for ways to help their community. Post
leader Commander Abner Garris was recently
approached by community member Juliana Verke
with the idea of creating a Post 109 sponsored
farmers market that would feature local vendors
and products.
“American Legion Post 109 has always been a great
supporter of events for the community, not just
for Legion members,” said Commander Garris.
“This partnership between the Post and Ms. Verke
has created a promising new opportunity for our
community.”
On February 13th, American Legion Post 109
held their first farmers market, which became an
instant success. A large part of that success was due
to the diversity of vendors and products available,
with over 40 vendors selling products that ranged
from fresh produce, hand made jewelry, home
furnishings, breads, coffees and much more.
When asked how the idea of a farmers market fits
in with the larger mission statement and beliefs
of the American Legion, Commander Garris
said, “In many ways, it is very helpful to bring
our community together to understand who we
are and what we have accomplished. Also, a small
portion of the proceeds from the farmers market
are provided to Post 109 which are in turn used to
assist veterans in our community. This assistance
has helped our membership families, our local
schools, the Jr. ROTC
program, and other
organizations that need
our support to grow as a
community.”

While the idea of
an American Legion
sponsored farmers market might not be completely
unique, Post 109 is the only post in the area that
is currently offering a market of this size to the
community. However, as a testament to the impact
and community benefit of Post 109’s market, other
posts are starting similar markets. As Charles
Caleb Colton once said, “imitation is the sincerest
form of flattery.”
When asked if there was one message about
American Legion Post 109’s farmers market that
he would like people to know, Commander Garris
said, “This market is for our community. Bringing
our neighbors out and meeting each other while
at the same time having an opportunity to further
small businesses based in our very own community.
As directed to all American Legion members in
our Constitution, “inculcate a sense of individual
obligation to the community”, we feel that it is our
obligation to further our community and children
for the future.”

Be Prepared for Those RMDs
You might not think that 70½ represents any
particular milestone. But when you do reach this
age, you will have to make some decisions that
affect an important aspect of your life — your
retirement income.
Here’s the background: Once you turn 70 ½, you
will need to start taking withdrawals from your
401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement
plan and from your traditional IRA (but not
your Roth IRA). Actually, you will need to
begin these withdrawals — known as “required
minimum distributions” (RMDs) — by April 1 of
the following year and continue taking them by
December 31 each year after that.
These RMDs are calculated by dividing your
account balance at the end of the previous year
by your life expectancy, as determined by IRS
mortality tables. If your spouse is your sole
beneficiary and is more than 10 years younger
than you, you’d use a separate table. Don’t worry
too much about the number crunching, though
— your financial advisor generally can do the
calculations for you.
What you should concern yourself with, however,
are the first two words of RMD: “required” and
“minimum.” These words mean what they say.
If you don’t take
withdrawals, or if you
withdraw less than
you should, you could
face a 50 percent
penalty tax on the
difference between
what you withdrew
and what you should
have withdrawn —
and then you’ll still
have to take out the
required
amount
and pay taxes on the
taxable portions of
those withdrawals.
So it’s a very good
idea to take your
withdrawals
on
time — and without
“shortchanging”
yourself.
Of course, you can
certainly take more
than the required
minimum amount —
but should you? The
answer depends on
whether you need
the money. But even
if you have to take
larger-than-minimum
withdrawals, you’ll
want to be careful not to take out more than you
need — because if you “over-withdraw” year after
year, you run the risk of outliving your resources.
That’s why it’s so important, during the early
years of your retirement, to establish a sustainable
withdrawal rate for your retirement accounts.
Your withdrawal rate will depend on a variety
of factors, such as your other sources of income
— Social Security, earnings from employment,
savings, etc.— your lifestyle choices, your estimated
longevity, and so on. In any case, once you have
arrived at an appropriate withdrawal rate, you’ll
need to stick to that rate unless your circumstances
change.
If you have multiple
IRAs, you’ll also face
another
decision,
because, once you’ve
calculated your total
RMDs for the year, from
all your IRAs, you can
take that amount from
one or more of them.
Depending on the
investment mix of these
individual IRAs, you
may find it beneficial
to take the money
from one account and leave the others intact, to
potentially grow further. (If you have multiple
401(k)s, though, you will likely need to calculate
and withdraw the separate RMDs for each plan.)
Other issues are also involved with RMDs, so,
when the time approaches, consult with your tax
and financial advisors. By studying all your options
before you begin taking these withdrawals, you
should be able to maximize their benefits.

Directions:
Ingredients:
Preheat oven to 375 and grease a bundt pan. Pour in the 2 cans of pie filling.
2 cans apple pie filling
2 cups Bisquick
½ cup sugar
1 cup butter, melted
½ cup chopped pecans
Sprinkle the Bisquick on top of filling. Sprinkle sugar on top of Bisquick. Pour melted
butter over sugar. Sprinkle chopped pecans on top of the butter.
Bake for 40-45 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.
White Bean Caesar Salad Dressing
Directions:
Ingredients:
In a blender, combine bean puree, olive oil, lemon juice, parmesan cheese, pepper, anchovy
paste, and garlic until blended smooth.
1 cup of white bean puree (canned beans and the
liquid pureed in a food processor)
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
¼ cup lemon juice
¼ cup parmesan cheese, grated
½ teaspoon black pepper
1-2 teaspoon anchovy paste
2 teaspoons garlic, minced
½ cup water
If needed, add water to thin out. Refrigerate until used.
