Newsletter of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society STJS is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of traditional jazz music. 106 K Street, Suite #1 • Sacramento, CA 95814 • (916) 444-2004 • www.sacjazz.org VOLUME 45 • NO. 7 AUGUST 2013 August 11: Jazz Campers and their “Professors” J azz Camp! So many of us look forward to this time of year because it’s become such a sharing-and-caring family under Camp Director Bill Dendle and Shelley Burns, and all the devoted faculty. STJS Trad. Jazz Camp is about more than just teaching kids to play jazz. It’s a wonderful, magical phenomenon, and we get to participate by coming to the Aug. 11 Jazz Sunday and cheering for all the Youth Jazz Camp bands. At 2:00 pm, a bunch of The Professors will take the stage, including: Bria Skonberg on trumpet, Terry Myers on reeds, Greg Varlotta on trombone (and tap!), and Curtis Brengle on piano. Bria, Terry and Greg have teamed up for years as part of The Professors, and while Curtis is a relative newcomer to The Professors, he and Greg Varlotta have been part of the Side Street Strutters, so there will be great comaraderie as they play your favorite trad and swing tunes. PUBLISHING And All That Jazz is published monthly, except January, by the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society: 106 K Street, Suite #1; Sacramento, CA 95814. by Vivian Abraham STJS EXEC. DIRECTOR <[email protected]> J uly of 2013 will certainly be one of the saddest months in quite a while for me because I lost one of my dearest friends, Hal Needham. I had the honor and priviledge of serving on our STJS Board of Directors with Hal for several years. He not only served the term he was elected to serve, Hal again stepped up to the plate to serve our Society when his successor’s job required him to leave the area. In fact, I cannot remember a time when Hal ever refused to do anything he could for the good of the Society. He and his beloved wife, Joan, also were very involved with Jazz Camp, and with many Jubilee functions; I have so many wonderful memories of their contributions and the good times we had working together. many laughs early on when he would hang 10 pictures, only to return a day or so later and 6 had fallen off the wall. He finally did find the solution, and had only this year’s pictures left to hang. I will so miss him popping his head into my office door with that wonderful smile to announce he was back to finish the job. Yes, dear friend, you will be missed by every one of us who have known you to be the kindest and gentlest person we have been blessed to know. [See page 11 for info regarding a “Celebration of Life” for Hal in Sept.] We have lost so many of our acquaintances and friends lately—which I guess we learn to accept as we age—but when the loss is so sudden and unexpected, it leaves one reeling. Hal had been working with me on a project in the office, hanging all of the Jubilee Hall of Fame pictures on one entire wall. We had I have been somewhat under the weather—where in the heck did this expression come from anyway?—so I do not have a comprehensive report of how our Festival did for you. I can tell you that the Festival was very successful, and of course, you know as members you are always welcome (cont. next page) NOTE: The Needham Family requests (in lieu of flowers, cards, etc.), that donations be made in Hal’s name to the STJS Youth Trad. Jazz Camp through the STJS Foundation. SUMMARY The Sac. Trad. Jazz Society is a non-profit organization established under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code for the purpose of educating the public and members on matters concerning the preservation and promotion of traditional jazz music and the study and play of musical instruments associated with traditional jazz music. “JAZZ SUNDAY” Monthly “Jazz Sunday” typically occurs on the 2nd Sunday, at the Dante Club: 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sac., CA. This official meeting is open to all STJS members and to the general public. ADMISSION Admission to “Jazz Sunday” is by donation of $8 for members, $12 for non-members. Persons under 12 are admitted free. Youth 12-20 (members) $5, youth 12-20 (non-members) $7. We especially encourage attendance by music students in our jam sets. GOLD CARD AUDITIONS Auditions are held twice a year: Mar. & Oct., 11 am prior to “Jazz Sunday.” Applications are available from the Gold Card Coordinator, to be completed one month before the audition. For info: 444-2004. In the Months Ahead 2nd Sunday OPEN at 11:30 am MUSIC from 12 noon to 5:00 pm DIRECTIONS to the DANTE CLUB: 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sacramento, 95825 Between Howe & Fulton Avenues, on south side of street. August 2013 Jazz Sunday solutions F or months (or years) there has been complaints about two problems in the Gold Card Room at Jazz Sunday. #1 The escalation of the Vocal Set from one set to two, and #2 The awarding of Gold Cards to instrumentalists of questionable skills. The complaints have been discussed at the Music Committee several times, but without the input from the membership. It is time to get this out in the open, and decide what is best for Jazz Sunday—but only one at a time. Therefore, there will be a special meeting of the Music Committee on Monday night, September 16 at 7 pm to discuss the Vocal Sets. We are going to obtain a larger venue for this meeting. We will notify you about this as soon as we can. This meeting is open to any member of STJS who has a complaint—AND a possible solution. If you cannot attend the meeting, please write to me in care of the STJS Office at 106 “K” Street, Suite 1; Sacramento, CA 95814. All letters will be read. They must include: — Your complaint — Possible solution(s) — Your signature I expect all those attending to have nice manners, patience, and an open mind to listen to other possible solutions, as well as an attitude of compromise. The goal here is: whatever makes Jazz Sunday better. Charlie Gehlbach – Chair, STJS Music Committee (cont. from page 2) to learn in detail how we did financially, etc. We always welcome your call or a visit to our office. In closing, I do not want to forget to address the irrate messages I received about my mistake in stating that perhaps we had the largest crowd ever at our new Turntable on the Green venue on Sunday night of our Festival. Of course, 3rd & Jazz was our largest venue many years ago, so excuse my lapse in memory. I guess my excitement about having 3100 people in the new venue (a first in many years) got the best of me. I am glad to learn, however, that a few of you do read what I write. Till next time. 2 August 2013 President’s Message by Tom Duff STJS PRESIDENT <[email protected]> A s most of you are aware, the STJS Trad. Jazz Camp runs at this time of year. The Adult camp started on July 28th and went through August 2nd. The youth camp then started on Aug. 3rd and concludes Aug 11th. I want to congratulate all the campers (adult and youth) that have completed this program. A big thanks to Camp Director Bill Dendle, who always recruits a great faculty as trainers and coaches. The Camp will be followed by a concert at the Dante Club that should not be missed. Beginning at 11:30 am (earlier than usual), it starts first with the Youth Camp Concert, and then our star instructors and several of the counselors and “Professors” take the stage at 2:00 pm. These folks are the future of this organization, so please come out and support them at the Aug. 11th Jazz Sunday. It’s already the middle of summer, and soon the 1st annual Hot Jazz Jubilee in Rancho Cordova will occur. Please see the full-page ad on page 5. Although this event is not an official STJS offering, the Society is supporting it by providing much of our equipment to help make this a success. Ken McMurray, who is running Hot Jazz, has committed to a sizable donation to STJS if this festival takes off. Ken, I look forward to your success and a large check. A few days ago, we were notified that Hal Needham had passed away. I knew Hal personally, and he was a great friend of the Jazz Society. Hal was very upbeat and always had something positive to say. Over the years, Hal did much for the Society. Hal, you will be missed. [See pg. 11 for info regarding a “Celebration of Life” for Hal Needham on Sept. 22nd.] The STJS is looking for a few good board members. We currently have two vacancies for Musician Board Members. If you are interested in serving on the STJS Board of Directors, please send a note to me via email at Thomas.Duff@comcast. net. Thank You for your consideration. STJS, as you know, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is run only by the events we present, and by donations and dues from our members. Thank You for your support. We will continue to provide events and talent for your enjoyment, and will continue to ask for tax deductible donations. The end of the year will be here before we know it, so think of us when you are doing your tax planning. Remember: you can sponsor a band, venue, golf cart, or whatever at the 2014 Sac. Music Festival. You can also sponsor any of our other programs. Again, Thank You for all your contributions. 2 Cover story (cont.) trumpeter/vocalist/composer Bria Skonberg is “poised to be one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation.” She has earned a 2013 Jazz Journalists’ Association nomination for “Up and Coming Jazz Artist of the Year” and is included in DOWNBEAT Magazine’s Rising Star Critics‘ Poll for 2013. Bria got her start as a professional big band singer at age sixteen doubling on trumpet and has since performed as a bandleader and guest artist all over North America, Europe, China, and Japan. Since arriving in New York three years ago, she has appeared in concert halls and clubs such as Symphony Space, Birdland, and The Iridium among the likes of Nicholas Payton, Anat Cohen, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Scott Robinson. She has been featured on Wycliffe Gordon’s projects, recording on the Louis Armstrong tribute, Hello Pops, performing a Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie at Dizzy’s Jazz Club in New York and as a member of his big band. Bria focuses on innovating while honoring tradition: She has studied with Warren Vach, experimented with fuzz pedals, and presented a gig fusing jazz and stand-up comedy. Best known for her knowledge of classic jazz and pursuit of worldwide adventure, she is creating a style all her own rooted in swampy New Orleans grooves, featuring world percussion and contemporary soul influenced vocals. Her debut American release, So Is the Day, peaked at #7 on the US National jazz charts and features an all-star ensemble including John Pizzarelli, Victor Goines and Wycliffe Gordon. Released on Random Act Records, 10% of all proceeds go to support the Jazz Foundation of America. She currently tours the world, headlining major clubs and festivals as well as programming music education workshops for all ages. On Aug. 25th, she’ll be part of a NEW event: the New York Hot Jazz Festival. She is an active volunteer at the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona, Queens. Visit: BriaSkonberg.com Terry Myers – Fans of the Mammoth Jazz Jubilee love the Terry Myers Big Band, and of course, all the fans of Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band love and appreciate Terry as the band’s outstanding reed man. Terry will be onboard with Bill Allred’s band for the “Ultimate Jazz Cruise” (JazzFestatSea.com) in late Nov./ early Dec. 2013, along with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, the Vach Brothers Jazz Sextet, and Yve Evans. Born in Richland, Iowa and receiving his B.S. from Drake University and his M.S. from the University of Missouri, Terry Myers has played in numerous jazz festivals, including North Sea (Holland), Cork (Ireland), Birmingham (England), Copenhagen (Denmark), Sacramento, Sun Valley, Clearwater, Jacksonville, Maui, Medford (Oregon), Sun Fest (West Palm Beach), Elkhart (Indiana), Milwaukee, Bern (Switzerland), Bix Festival (Iowa) and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Terry’s dynamic career has enabled him to appear with such talented players as Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (Buddy Morrow), Bob Haggart, Milt Hinton, Warren Vach, Kenny Davern, Peter Appleyard, Bill and John Allred, Billy Butterfield, Wild Bill Davison, Rosemary Clooney, Vince Giordano, and others. Terry is now living in Maitland Florida where he freelances in the Central Florida region where he has performed with Bob Hope, the Temptations, Tommy Tune, Ray Charles, Regis Philbin and Kathy Lee Gifford, and Wayne Newton. Terry has had feature dates with his sixteen-piece big band at Busch Gardens and Cypress Gardens, and has contracted for the Les Elgart and Billy May Orchestras, as well as appearing with the Florida Symphony in a tribute to Harry James. Visit: TerryMyersOrchestra.com Greg Varlotta – Greg and Curtis were both in Sacramento last May when the Side Street Strutters performed a high-energy show at the Crest Theatre. Greg began studying trumpet under his fathers direction in Lockport, Illinois at the age of 5 and received his music degree in trumpet performance from Arizona State Univ. He has performed with numerous symphony orchestras, brass quintets, jazz ensembles, and is the recipient of the prestigious Arion Trumpet Award. In addition to his accomplishments on trumpet and trombone, this multi-talented performer also enjoys playing bass, guitar, banjo, piano, tuba, singing and tap dancing. Greg has a strong interest in music technology and enjoys working with computers, programming synthesizers, composing and arranging music. In 2006, Greg completed a 21-year tour of duty as a staff musician with The Side Street Strutters at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. He currently resides in Phoenix, AZ and has toured with the Brian Setzer band, “E Street Band” guitarist Niles Lofgren, and continues to tour with the Side Street Strutters. He has created a new system of notation for tap dancing called “FootNotes™”, which he published in April of 2009. Students can learn tap as a musical instrument, and enjoy all the benefits that reading music offers. View his instructional videos at TapDanceNow.com Curtis Brengle – Curtis started playing classical piano at the age of nine. He studied privately through elementary, junior high, high school and college, as well as playing in the jazz and concert bands, singing in the choirs, and participating in competitions. Curtis graduated cum laude from the Cornish Institute in the Seattle area with a B.F.A. in piano performance. At Cornish, he studied with Gary Peacock, Julian Priester, Art Lande and James Knapp among others. While in Seattle, Curtis arranged music for the Muzak Corp., played many club dates and recorded many local commercials. Curtis relocated to the Los Angeles area in 1989 and since played with and/or recorded with many artists including Sheena Easton, Englebert Humperdinck (musical director), Ray Charles, Pointer Sisters, Denice Williams, Chaka Khan, Rick Braun, and Jeff Golub to name a few. Other credits include many recordings for the Yamaha Corp., Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO), Freaky Friday (Disney), ESPN Football (Jeff Koz), and a host of other national and local commercials. He is the pianist with the Side Street Strutters. 2 August 2013 ad val! r T ti w es e F n z z Ja Pleasemailthisformwithcheckmadepayableto: HOTJazz Jubilee,5150FairOaksBlvd.101-#206 Carmichael,CA95608 Phonecontact:916-822-2210 Please return our/my confirmation to: Name: Address: City State Zip Code Telephone # Circle Card Type: Visa 2013 • RANCHO CORDOVA, CA 1 st I naugural JubIlee LABoR dAY WEEKEnd Aug. 30th - Sept. 2nd, 2013 MarriottHotel~RanchoCordova,CA Highway 50 & Sunrise Blvd. 6 VEnUES • 14 BAndS • 120 SETS • ALL AT onE HoTEL! When asked what they thought of their new group, Garrett said, “Awesome,” and Jackson said he really liked the connection they had with each other on stage. By “The Cricket” [who is NOT the AATJ editor] I ’m inviting you to walk in someone else’s shoes—well, stylish slippers—for a bit: a classy-but-zany former juvenile probation officer and vaudeville master of ceremonies, willing to throw herself into whatever is playing when she walks in. Enthusiastic and polished—and nervous about the assignment! Wow, who knew? Big Mama Sue Kroninger did such a terrific job for us on Jazz Sunday, it is hard to imagine she had the least qualms, but that’s what she confessed to. Billed as Big Mama Sue’s Parade of Bands, the Main Stage was as varied as band-getter Kristy Reed could make it, starting with a new group that named itself “In the Swing of It.” Nolan Cyr was large-and-in-charge of Breanna Rodgers, Sarah Pearlman, Matt Seno, Emma Simpson and Jacob Swerdlow. A band with a clear vision, having a lot of fun. With a significant cheering section seated at the back of the room, we had clarinetist Scott Seno, trumpet players Garrett Seno and Jackson Levin, drummer Leah Carroll, bassist Matt Knau and t-bone players Lindsay Russell and Justin Hub- JULY 14, 2013: BIG MAMA SUE GCR Dir. Paula Dula Tony Bellacera Hardly had to ask what Kirsten and Dion Rodgers thought of the group, what with their daughter playing clarinet and all. And Emma Simpson’s parents, Bill and Anna, couldn’t have looked more proud. Mama Sue introduced the Crescent Katz by saying she recognized juvenile delinquents when she saw them (remember I told you she was a probation officer in a former life?), but that didn’t keep her from sitting-in. Of course, she also sat-in for sets in the Gold Card Room AND the Tailgate, so the woman is obviously not too picky—and we love that about her! Brandon Au, Jeff Kreis, Greg Sabin, Priscilla Ornelas and Patrick Skiffington welcomed her with open arms. Set 3 was a complete change of pace. Vocalist Rachel Jackson’s quintet included her husband, Brett, on drums, with Shelley Denny on bass and Jimmy Spero on guitar, along with Bill Bua on sax. Golly, she’s smooth. That is not the first word that comes to mind when you mention FreeBadge Serenaders; Greg Sabin, Patrick Skiffington, and Priscilla Ornelas (subbing for Zachary Proteau) are such a blast! Their act is a mix of chuckles and guffaws, and really, really good music; prob- Crescent Katz Jeff Kreis Justin Au (sub for Brandon) TGR Dir. Jane Reinmuth Larry Sikorski Dorit Benjamini Priscilla Ornelas T Jackson Keith Williams Terry Allwein Ruthie McDaniel Gwenetta Brooks Jim Roberson Wally Hawkins August 2013 ably reminded Mama Sue of her vaudeville beginnings. And Greg, good job on the raffle-reading! (I wish my notes were clear enough to tell you which of the above corrupted “Cakewalking Babies from Home” to “Rome” and “Rhone” and …?) Ken Meyers, Alan Ginter and Jim Roberson made up the rhythm section for the Jazz Divos, three wildly diverse male vocalists—Larry Sikorski, Wally Hawkins and Keith Williams. Appreciated by the audience and so energized at performing, it took them an hour to wind down afterwards! Way to go, guys! Svetlana Colby and her daughter, Elena Colby, were there to hear their friend, Larry. Marian Pollock enjoyed the Divos, even though husband George had other obligations for the day. Rich and Cathy Chiverton said this was their first Jazz Sunday—Cathy won a free pass at the Music Festival! Welcome. Connie Backers, on the other hand, didn’t get to Jubilee at all! She was at the May meeting, and then developed such bad bursitis in her hip, she is just now back in circulation. She and Bob Renison were vocalists on Tailgate Set 2. Trumpet duties were shared by Ken Champion and Eric Treadwell. Larry Tyrell was the trombonist, Tom Carpenter and Duncan McElman were the reed section, and Rich O’Day, Dave Sieber and Tony Bellacera were the rhythm section. I hear Rachel Jackson Bill Bua that Bob Renison also plays drums when called upon. His wife Mary was on hand, too. Aforementioned Tom Carpenter played bass on TG 1! Again, who knew? Bill Sharp, Bob Gonzalez, Dick Lockwood, Frank Lindskoog, Mark Kramer, Carl Warmdahl and Bev Ludlow filled out the roster. Jay Paulus and Bob Noren were the trombone section on TG 3, with Charlie Gehlbach, Parker Weiss, Billie Menz, Travis Maslin on bass, Jack Scott and Bev Ludlow. Particularly honored to have Buddy Harpham in the house! The legendary Sacramento band leader (whom I am informed is over 90 and still working!), said that his wife, Dolores Impenna Harpham, came to see her friend, Billie Menz, but they hadn’t found her yet. That’s because Billie was playing right then, and couldn’t be seen over the top of the piano. Seeing Buddy reminded us to tell you that one of his former band members, Tim Lawrence, died recently. He was owner of Tim’s Music, and also played with John Skinner’s Orchestra. Olivia Flournoy, Carl Kaiser and Breanna Rodgers were on TG 4, with the rhythm team of John and Nick Cocuzzi and Dave Sieber. Harry Duvall and Jane Reinmuth were the vocalists. Parker Weiss’ sister, Alex, is a member of the Sacramento Children’s Chorus, which made a ten-day tour of China as part of the Chorus’ 20th Anniversary Celebration. There were about 35 students, plus chaperones, parents, siblings. The California Legislature officially sponsored the tour, and Channel 3 had streaming video of the event. What a lifetime memory! Want to know who won the “traveled the farthest” prize? It wasn’t Alex. The winner’s name is Aga Agnieska, and she came with a group of students from Eastern Europe in 2006, sightseeing and working in the Dante Club kitchen. She repeated, this time as a waitress, in 2010. Now she’s a bone fide doctor, and is here just on vacation, visiting friend Jeff Roseman, Dante Club General Manager, who sponsored the original student group back in 2006. Angela Martinez didn’t come nearly as far, although she IS a student. She is taking an elective music class at Delta College, and her instructor, Lisa Vutts, assigned her class to attend and write about a musical event—that’s us! Angela’s friend, Horge Arellano, was there in support. They were enjoying the Gold Card Room sets, which started with Champion and O’Day, who were joined by Gene Mondro, Mike Melnikov and Dan Lobay. GC 2 had Gehlbach, Paulus, Lockwood/Noren, Lindskoog, Kramer, Warmdahl and Eddi Benjamini. Oh, and Big Mama Sue! The Vocal Set foursome of Meyers, Ginter, Roberson and Hull then took the stage. The set included Gary Woods singing “The Very Thought of You.” Jeanette Hall said she heard “Old Man Time” on The Phil Harris Show on Old Time Radio. Jackie Clauson sang “Don’t Get Around Much Any More” for her family: son Terry and his wife, Corrie; her granddaughter, Elyssa Clauson, and boyfriend Jake Williams; her ex-sister-in-law, Sue Lomurno; and her “S.O.,” Richard Lehmann. Wow! Bev Kennedy beseeched “Don’t Go to Strangers,” and Jullie Gallaher sang “On the Sunnyside of the Street.” T Jackson sang “Something in the Air Between Us,” probably the first time ever performed at STJS; and Harry Duvall said “Why Did I Choose You?” was written by his roommate in New York (Michael Leonard!). Dan Whitney added a little touch of Country with “On the Road Again.” That wasn’t all the vocals by any means, but we are on to GC 4, which Bill Au pulled together, and which included Justin Au, Tom Carpenter, Scotty Harper and Tony Bellacera. Set 5 was a special set, with Terry Allwein on guitar, Tom Webb on drums and Ruthie McDaniel (and Gwenetta Brooks) on vocals. Lots of laughter among these friends. 10 Dr. Sigrid Lenert has practiced Internal Medicine in Sacramento for many years; she and friend Mel Lyons were enjoying the Parade of Bands. Frank Melendez and wife Nell Devine were hosting Frank’s daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Bud Carson. “Sugar” Willie Erickson said he’s glad to be back in operation—been in bad shape for the better part of a year, having trouble playing piano, although we’ve enjoyed his tuba in the interval. And did I tell you the reason Vince Bartels didn’t make it to June Jazz Sunday? He put his hand where he shouldn’t have (he’s in construction, for Pete’s sake, what did you think I meant?), and got a spider bite! Painfully sorry, Vince. We’ve received word that Bev Gunter has had a very rapid onset of dementia and is in a nursing home in Galt. Contact her step-daughter (Bill Gunter’s daughter), Christine Gillett, at [email protected] for contact info. This is sad news. The general public may not have known Bev, but every Jubilee volunteer, bar none, knows “The Parking Bitch” (a nickname she cherished). Hal Needham, STJS supporter, leader of the Black Tuesday Jazz Band and most importantly, husband of Joan, has gone to be with her again. The family will have a celebration of Hal’s life on Sept. 22 at the Dante Club (noon to 4-ish). We also learned of the death of Richard Leupp, Gold Card trombonist for many years, and dancer Len Lamb—R.I.P. Some up news: We have heard that Lenny Pollacchi is doing really well after a 7-1/2 hour heart surgery. We’re glad for the good news. And Pat Blucher is home-again-home-again after an annoying hospital stay. She’ll have “and Friends” at Straw Hat Pizza Sept. 18. See page 12 for Straw Hat schedule. The Best of the Best, four standouts from the Jazz Camp Faculty, plus Youth Camp Bands, will be on Main Stage on August 11 starting at 11:30 am. And—this is so cool—the Subway over the fence from the Dante Club tracked us down and made an offer we can’t refuse: Pick up a flyer in the Lobby (or take from page 6 of this “AATJ”), present it to Subway when you pick up lunch (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and they will donate 10% to TNT, The New Traditionalists! Same deal on Sept. 8 (and if we’re really, really good, maybe on into the future). The San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society is sponsoring Art Bregante’s Dance Band at the Thornton Avenue Elks Lodge, Sun., Aug. 4, noon to 5. www.SanJoaquinDixielandJazz.org Fog City Jazz Band will be the featured guest at the Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society on August 18, noon to 5, at the Clarion Inn on Sisk Road. Their July 21 guest band was Port City, which I mention so I can tell you that band members Bill Reinhart and Steve Drivon were in one of the pictures in the Huell Howser tribute at the State Fair! (cont. next page) August 2013 Not looking their solemn and restrained Port City best (more their Washboard Wizards personas), which is probably why I was able to recognize them. Posted at midtownstomp.com on July 22, 2013 Midtown Stomp is excited to announce that we are about to begin a new chapter in our history of bringing social partner dancing to Sacramento. We started at the YWCA over eight-and-a-half years ago. Two years later, we outgrew the space and moved to the Eastern Star Ballroom. For the last couple of years, we have been searching for a new, permanent home that we can call our own. We have enjoyed our time at Confucius Hall, but soon we will be moving to our new home. WE WILL BE PURCHASING SPOTLIGHT DANCE & FITNESS IN WEST SACRAMENTO on Aug. 1st. We believe that this is a marriage between two great dance families. We both have a long history of providing the best possible classes and great dance experiences. We are committed to ensuring that everything that you love about both Midtown Stomp and Spotlight remains the same and that you’ll have many more great opportunities as a result of this marriage. We are sure that everyone has many questions! We will attempt to answer them all below. If you have more questions, visit www.midtownstomp.com and fill out the form on the Contact page. 916-221-1500. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: How does this change effect Midtown Stomp? Midtown Stomp has primarily only been able to offer dancing on Friday nights, and we have only focused on swing. With our own full-time location, the possibilities are endless. We are also gaining many new instructors in the merger who are experts in many different styles of dance. We will be able to offer more classes, more workshops, more nights of dancing, and many more dance opportunities. 14 Is the new location easy to get to? What about parking? What about Spotlight’s Friday night dances? Spotlight is very close to the highway. From most locations, travel time to Spotlight is exactly the same as travel time to Confucius Hall. If it is a couple of miles further for you, we are confident that the abundant free parking will more than make up for it. Once we move Midtown Stomp’s Friday night swing dance, we’ll have to reschedule Spotlight’s Friday night ballroom dances to a new night. Many people have given us their preferences and we’d love to hear what night you like best. We will be surveying both Spotlight and Midtown Stomp customers in the weeks to come. What about the name? What about Spotlight’s staff? We have several ideas but want to take our time to make sure that we make the right choice. Honoring the legacies of both Spotlight and Midtown Stomp is extremely important to us. In the meantime, swing dancing will be called “Midtown Stomp,” and the location and ballroom classes and dances will be referred to as “Spotlight,” or “Spotlight Dance and Fitness.” Spotlight’s staff are incredible people including awesome instructors, receptionists, and behind the scenes people who help make Spotlight great. We are excited to have all of them as part of our future, and they are looking forward to meeting all of you! Will Midtown Stomp move? Yes! After we have a chance to get settled and give the place a facelift, we will move Midtown Stomp’s Friday Night Swing Dance to the new location. We have a five year lease, so this will be our longterm home. What about Gwen Burton of Spotlight? Gwen has been the heart and soul of Spotlight for almost 13 years. This marriage will allow Gwen to concentrate on the things she loves the most: her family and teaching dance. She will still be around the studio inspiring, instructing, creating, and bringing great energy to all of us. She will also continue to provide the Professional Ballroom Dance Instructor Training and offer her expertise to the Sprit In Motion Dance Company, and to all of our students. Are you planning a remodel? We are working on the final plans with the building owner. The plan will include a larger main room, a stage, more lighting options, tables and chairs, and a fresh look. We are going to be sure it’s a place that all of our dancers look forward to spending a fun night out dancing and learning. Will Spotlight be closed during the remodel? The remodel will take a couple of weeks. After talking to the contractors, we don’t anticipate that we’ll have to cancel any classes or dances during this time. On the slight chance we’ll need to close for a couple of days, we’ll be sure to let everyone know ASAP. We will not move Midtown Stomp’s Friday night dances until after the remodel is complete. As a Midtown Stomp swing dancer, how can I learn ballroom dances? We will have great membership opportunities that will allow you to learn the dances that you’ve always wanted to try, take private lessons, and come out social dancing. If you just love swing dancing on Friday nights, everyone will still be able to come out, pay at the door, and enjoy dancing. Will we need to stop dancing at midnight? While we will still advertise the dance ending at midnight, we won’t have to stop because just because clock strikes 12. We’ll hold the lease on the building, and we can go as late as we want. This will make for some absolutely epic nights!
