Senior Class of 2010 Pages 2-3 Volume 15 | Number 1 | July 2011 Texas Road Trip Page 6 Sports Action Pages 10-11 School news, information and events Amazing things! Each year as we publish our end of year review, we have the opportunity to reflect upon the accomplishments of our students, staff, volunteers, donors, and Board of Directors affirming that education is truly a partnership. Within these pages you will find evidence of accomplishments of each of these groups. From the athletic accomplishments of student athletes to talented student artists and Thespians to academic excellence, Fairhill students have proven once more to be exceptional. We hope you will view this publication as a report on your investment in Fairhill today and the Fairhill of tomorrow. We are pleased to recognize the very generous gifts we received this year as well as the many volunteer hours donated to help Fairhill achieve its mission of providing a quality education for students with learning differences. We would like to publicly thank some of our leaders. Linda and Rick Baldelli started the school year chairing another outstanding Fairhill Golf Tournament. We had another successful Annual Fund Drive which supports our operating budget with the help of Cathryn and John St. Wrba, and Carolyn Cheatum, Jenny Kimbrell and Vicki McCandless chaired another exciting fun filled Auction/Gala. Katie Lange and the Parent Council Board coordinated a dedicated group of Fairhill parents in a myriad of volunteer activities. We would also like to thank our Board of Directors for their continuing guidance, wisdom, and support. As you read this newsletter you will see the amazing things the Fairhill Community has accomplished. Jane Sego Executive Director Garrett and Cathryn St. Wrba show increased participation in the Annual Fund Drive “Fly with the Falcons 2010-2011” Thank you for flying with the Falcons this year during our annual fund drive. The annual fund is the key to keeping Fairhill on the cutting edge of new technology and teaching tools, fine arts and sports programs, and staff training. For the third consecutive year the generosity of Fairhill supporters has set a new record of $112,000.00! On behalf of the students, staff, and parents, we want to say THANK YOU! If you have not made your contribution this year, the drive continues through August 31st. John and Cathryn St. Wrba Parent Campaign Chairs Parent’s Corner “Fairhill focuses on abilities not disabilities.” “Teachers work together as a team.” “The quality of education is impressive.” “An education at Fairhill is the best decision we ever made.” Fairhill School and Diagnostic Assessment Center | 16150 Preston Road | Dallas, Texas 75248 | Phone 972.233.1026 | Fax 972.233.8205 | www.fairhill.org Fairhill Senior Class of 2011 Annual Cap and Gown Ceremony Senior Class of 2011 Back row from left: Megan Marshall, Cory Free, Taylor Proffer, John McLaughlin, Collin Gibson, Ari Disraeli, Miles Lyon, Caleb McCandless, Bennett Updegraff, David Bails, Ross Lovell, Kyle Brannon, Daniel Harper, Alex Sauer, Catherine Dabrowski, Tiana Bermudez, Erica Dallas, Tina Vint, Anne Lightner, Torie Shelton, and Sabah Dhanani On May 20, 2011, Fairhill Seniors, family members, and upper school students attended the annual cap and gown ceremony. Smart Boards and Responders With donations from families and foundations, including Mable Peters Caruth Fund of Communities Foundation of Texas, Mary Carter Crowley Family Fund of Communities Foundation of Texas, W.K. Gordon, Jr. Foundation, Westerman Foundation and Mr. and Mrs. Kee Kimbrell, Fairhill embarked on a new road in technology with the purchase of Smart Boards and Smart Responders. The new wall sized computers perform teaching tasks for all subjects and grade levels. The students and teachers enjoy the interactive curriculum that can be presented. Responders are used increasingly on college campuses. College students purchase one along with a text book for interactive learning at the college level. The responders are not just a fun diversion; they are tools our students need to prepare for college! Fairhill Golf Tournament and All Star Gala Raise $50,000 for Technology. Yearbook The commitment and generosity of Fairhill parents, staff, board members, alumni and friends made the 11th Annual Golf Tournament and All Star Gala very successful events. Co-chairs of the golf tourney were Linda and Rick Baldelli. Ridgeview Ranch Golf Club provided the perfect setting for teams made up of second graders through grandparents and friends. After an afternoon of stiff competiton, a hamburger cookout, awards ceremony and raffle prizes made for a grand finale! The Fairhill All Star Gala was held March 5 at the Westin Park Central Hotel. Second Place Winners from the Lower School Division in the 11th Annual Golf Tourney: Billy and Bill Pearson and Eliot and Michael Raffkind. On a crisp sunny day in January, the National Art Honor Society students jumped on the school bus for a quick trip down Preston Road to tour the world renowned Rachofsky House. Both the Rachofsky House and the Getty Art Museum in Los Angeles were designed by the noted architect Richard Meir. The art shown was from the collection of Mr. Howard Rachofsky and was the modern conceptual art of today. The students were given an in depth tour by the curator Thomas Fulmer. This close up look at modern art gave the students a wonderful contrast of current trends with the art of previous decades. Educational Travels 8th and 9th graders arrived in Washington during the Cherry Blossom Festival. A trip to NASA provided an opportunity to learn about space missions. Annie McRae, Kristi Clark, Jessie Champ and Keaten Olson learned more about the space program during their tour. Texas Road Trip Each spring seventh graders participate in the Texas Road Trip. The group enjoyed stops at Washington on the Brazos, San Jacinto, Battleship Texas and NASA before traveling to San Antonio. Making their way back to Dallas, students explored Natural Bridge Caverns and toured the Capitol in Austin. Outdoor School Fairhill’s fifth and sixth graders look forward all year to their off-campus learning experience at the Outdoor School of Texas, located near Marble Falls. Teamwork and nature studies are the focus of the three day event. Students learn cooperation skills as they work in teams studying animal habitats and habits as well as conservation techniques. Jessica Rickerby and Isabella Serrano identified birds native to Texas. 8th and 9th Graders Explore Washington, D.C. Fairhill eighth and ninth graders enjoyed the many historical sights and sounds of the Washington, D.C. area in a planned five-day American History learning excursion. A few stops included tours of the White House, the U.S. Capitol building, war memorials, presidential memorials, and Arlington National Cemetery. The group traveled outside D.C. to tour Mount Vernon, Monticello, and the University of Virginia. Student Council Attends LEAD in Chicago Members of the Fairhill Student Council attended the National Association of Student Council’s LEAD Conference in Chicago. (LEAD) Leadership Experience and Development conference offers national-level leadership training in areas of team building, fundraising, and community service projects. His career has included thirty years with National Geographic and Life magazines. His most well known series is the “Faces of Ground Zero–Portraits of the Heroes of September 11th”. Marea Downey, former Fairhill parent and volunteer, arranged for Mr. McNally to visit. Students from Spanish II, III, and IV performed Macbeto. The play was performed for parents, Fairhill staff and Upper School students. Over 40 Spanish students participated in the annual Spanish play. This year’s production was Macbeto – an Enchilada Western. This new twist on the classic Shakespearean play, adapted by Spanish teacher Lissa Dallas, was set in the Old West of Spain with the cast portraying cowboys and Indians. The lead character, Macbeto, played by Miles Lyon, took over as the new sheriff in town from the ill-fated Dunquino, played by Neil Rickoff. Macbeto and his ambitious, scheming wife, doña Macbeto, played by Erica Dallas, saw their evil plot unravel just as the chief Indian, Tecate, played by Caleb McCandless, predicted. The mainly English speaking audience was kept entertained and informed by the music and PowerPoint that set up each scene. The Spanish play concept sparked the interest of local media. The Dallas Morning News, NBC Channel 5 and CW 33 all did features and interviews regarding this event. Lower School Spring Performance Hooray for Hollywood/Fairhill Third graders Hayden Strong, Tanner Puckett, Michael Raffkind and Luke Bookout performed Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz”. Amber received congratulations from Ms. Sego and Mrs. Finnell. Prom Miles Lyon and his grandmother Ruth Ann Jewel worked together to complete a math puzzle on Grandparents’ Day. In the fall of 2010, the Fairhill Mom’s Book Club read World War II themed books. To support their reading, the Book Club went on a field trip to the Dallas Holocaust Museum. The moms benefitted from the fact-filled tour by a museum guide and a lecture by a Holocaust survivor. Fairhill Juniors, Seniors and their dates danced the night away at the Roaring Twenties Prom. The DJ led the group in dances and activities. Many attendees played casino games to win great prizes and had caricatures drawn. Lindsey Williams, Stephanie Sims and Caleb McCandless seemed very pleased with winnings at the casino table. Hats Off To Our Parents I’ve enjoyed serving as the President of the Fairhill Parent Council this past year. Once again we’ve tried to offer events that enhance you and your child’s experience at Fairhill. Former Falcons In August, we had our first annual Kickoff Party at Hawaiian Falls in Garland. We had about 150 attend and hope that it provided a way for new students and families to feel welcome to the school and returning students and families get to see each other to socialize. We are planning another event for the fall and hope to see many of you there. In the spring we had a crowd turn out for a tour of Cowboy Stadium and we provided a reprieve from testing week by having the Kona Ice Company come one day after school. This year we had wonderful speakers for our Parent Ed program. One of the most well attended events was in March when Tam Warner Minton came to talk about “Preparing Your Child for College and Choosing the Best Fit” when selecting a college to ensure their success. We provided parents with the Michael Raffkind used all his strength on the bungee pull inflatable activity during Field Day. opportunity to attend a screening of “Race to Nowhere”, a documentary that addressed schools, parents and students being pushed to over perform. It provided a great deal of food for thought at our household and hope it did the same for others. Art Schuster completed his second year at Richland College and plans to major in engineering. Ben Revell is in the United States Coast Guard. Mary Macaluso completed her Masters Degree in Public Administration in December. She is working at the San Francisco Department of Public Health as a senior disaster preparedness planner. Mary and David Haupert were married June 25, 2011. The wedding was held on the UC Berkley campus. Raymond Jackson is attending Northlake College and is involved in extracurricular activities while maintaining a high grade point average. Class of 2005 Fairhill families enjoyed a “behind the scenes” tour of Cowboy Stadium. Class of 1998 Lauren Badura, Kaden Collins, Homer Smith, Christian Hensley and Lauren Minnis stopped for a photo during the fun-filled afternoon. Emily Gilles married Clint Atwood at Ashton Gardens in Corinth, Texas on April 17, 2011. Several Fairhill alumni attended the wedding. Emily is Sales Manager and Conference Services Manager for the Hilton Bella Harbor Hotel in Rockwall. David Lowe is presently stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He is scheduled to go to Sergeant’s Leadership School and Air Assault School in the fall. Finally, I want to thank my fellow board members, Ruth Willoughby, and all of the parents that helped plan and volunteer at the activities during the school year, without all of you they would not have taken place. We are always open to your suggestions. Let me know your thoughts at [email protected]. Have a great summer break! Nick Lange and Chris Fogarty gave thumbs up for the Kona Ice Party! Class of 2009 Class of 2004 In addition, our Parent Council Board worked closely with Ruth Willoughby to improve our school lunch program. We sent out surveys to the students, did a lot of research and talked to other schools to find other options. We are excited to announce that Marshall’s Catering will be providing our meals everyday next year.
