Syttende Mai (May 17th) is the most festive day of
the year in Norway. They remember 1814 and WWII
– freedom is precious. Therefore, let us really celebrate
on May 17 and Kringen Klub. Wear your bunad or Norwegian Sweaters. The dinner will be fantastic. Bring a friend or guest!
Our first priority is membership here in Kringen Lodge 4-25. “Each
One – Get One” Please give us support in our endeavor. Currently, we are
70 members behind Seattle. This is our opportunity to be Number One in
the order of Sons of Norway!
As you know, Kringen Lodge is the host for the District Four 100th
Anniversary Convention June 19 – 21, 2014. Your committee is working
very hard to provide programing befitting our first 100 years. Presently we
have 125 delegates registered of which our lodge has 27 delegates. Alberta
and Saskatchewan in Canada, Montana and North Dakota constitute our
district, established in Devils Lake, North Dakota, in 1914. We will need
your support, and want your help. We will need baked goods for the coffee
breaks, as well as volunteers for various duties during the convention.
Entertainment and a special dinner will be at Kringen Klub on June
20. The Einar Olav Larsen trio from Verdal, Trondelag, Norway will be
in concert and for your dancing pleasure. We welcome all members and
guests.
Our June issue of the Posten will contain all the scheduling for the
convention. Together, we can make it all happen!

KRINGEN POSTEN - MAY 2014
Cultural Corner
Can you identify a
Norwegian surname
when you see it?
The topic of our upcoming Cultural Program on Tuesday evening, May 6th at 6:45 p.m. is “Bring
your Norwegian genealogy Research Questions Session” – and we will help you find answers to those
puzzling questions that we often encounter when we are researching our Norwegian “roots.” There are many people with Scandinavian “roots” in the United States today. The most recent
estimates, from 2010 reveal that 1,516,126 Americans claim Danish ancestry, there are 4,347,703
Americans of Swedish ancestry and 4,642,526 claim Norwegian ancestry. The number of Americans
with Norwegian ancestry was then only a little less than the population of Norway in 2010 which then
was 4,858,200. North Dakota is the state with the highest percentage of Norwegian Americans, a whopping
30.8%, while Minnesota is the state with the highest number of citizens of Norwegian ancestry. In
2009, 868,361 Minnesotans were of Norwegian descent. Some people find it difficult to distinguish between the Scandinavian countries because their
cultures and languages are quite similar. Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are so similar that they
are mutually understandable. It was particularly interesting for me to attend meetings in which the
Scandinavian speakers from these three countries used their own native tongue in their presentations
or discussions and everyone understood each other!
Norwegians are the ethnic group with the most surnames that are taken from the names of the
farms. Almost 70% of all Norwegians have a surname that is a farm name. Norwegian surnames from
farm names are easy to recognize. They end in –rud, -heim (-hjem), -stad, -haug, -by, -land, -dal and
other elements describing natural form natural earth formations. Ole Evinrude (Evenrud), inventor
of the outboard motor, immigrated to Wisconsin as a child. My mother’s maiden name was Hovland. Hov was the name of a pre-Christian temple in Norway and the farm on which that hov stood is
named Hovland. The name Halbakken is easily translated. It means “a half of a hill” so that was probably the original size of that farm. The name Sletten refers to the topography of the farm – was slette, located on level ground. Or the farm name Bakken – it was on a hill; Lillehaugen = little hill; Stordahl
= big valley, Fjelstad = mountain place, Hoyem = high home; Vik = bay; Stendal or Stendahl = stony
valley; Vesledahl = little valley; Jordheim = earth or (fertile) ground home; Engen = meadow; Moen
= moor or heath; Skogen = woods and on and on! Those are just a few examples of the derivation of
Norwegian names. In addition, many Norwegian-related names are patronymic, - the father’s first name, plus –son or
–datter (daughter), i.e. Larson or Nelsdatter, etc. This was the primary naming system in Norway prior
to about 1900. The majority of the people did not have a permanent surname, but used their patronymic name plus the name of the farm on which they lived to differentiate their name from someone
else with that same name. But, if the person moved from that farm to another, he/she could not take
the name of the “birth farm” with them to their new location. My Anderson surname stems from my
great-grandfather, Anders, so his son, my grandfather took the surname Anderson when he emigrated
to America. In Norway, the family lived on the Ødemark farm. Ødemark means deserted or desolate
place, i.e. wilderness, so my grandfather decided to use his patronymic name. Many of the Norwegian
names that begin with Øde, i.e. Ødemark or Ødegaard perhaps date back to the period after the Black
Death in the 1350s. More than half of the people in Norway died during that terrible epidemic so
many farms were left deserted when all of the occupants died. Several centuries later when the population rose and the people moved back unto those farms, there were no records of what those farms had
been named so they were called Ødegaard or Ødemark – deserted farm or deserted place and those
names continued through history. So, my surname is Anderson, - not deserted or desolate place! We will talk more about Norwegian genealogy at our May Cultural Night meeting. Please bring
your Norwegian genealogical questions to that Cultural meeting on Tuesday evening, May 6th at 6:45
p.m. and we will suggest sources that will help you answer your genealogy questions. Verlyn D. Anderson, Cultural Director, April 15, 2014
Kringen Lesering – Book Discussion Group
Lesering, Kringen Lodge’s Book Discussion Group, will meet on Monday noon, May 12 in the
Lounge to discuss The Land of Dreams by Vidar Sundstøl. The Publisher’s Weekly writes “Norwegian
crime novelist Sundstøl’s stellar psychological thriller, the first in his Minnesota Trilogy, stunningly evokes
the North Shore of Lake Superior and its people.” This is a very interesting mystery novel. Our Lesering
does not meet during the summer months, but if you want to read ahead, our September selection is The
Book Thief by Markus Zusak and our October selection is And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Husseini. Copies of these books are available for sale at Zandbroz Variety, 420 Broadway. You can also check them
out from local public and university libraries. We have a limited number of copies at our Kringen Library
that you can check out for a short period of time. All Kringen members are encouraged to join our Lesering. We are always on the look-out for the names of books that we should consider reading and discussing
in the future. Please let us know the names of your favorite contemporary books, KRINGEN POSTEN - MAY 2014
