Montefiore Board of Management and Executive
The Home is managed and administered by an elected Board of Management. All Board members act in
a voluntary capacity and oversee all facets of the Home’s administration, with the support of a number
of different committees. The Board is responsible for the continuing financial viability of the Home.
Today, the Board faces the challenge of the demanding economic environment, a growth in the number of elderly
people in our community, and the need to provide appropriate care for the ever-increasing number of people
with dementia.
This climate has strengthened the Board’s resolve to continue developing and promoting best practice in all aspects
of aged care, constantly reviewing and improving the services we provide to ensure that the elderly in our community
receive the care and quality of life they deserve.

WHO’S WHO AT THE HOME
5
President’s Report 2011-12
David Freeman AM
Montefiore is experiencing
growing recognition, both
locally and internationally
for our relentless pursuit of
best practice in care delivery.
As I reflect on another hectic and highly successful year, it is difficult not
to be impressed by the achievements of the Home over the past few years.
Within this report it is a pleasure to highlight some of our achievements which include:
•
The construction of a world-class aged care campus at Randwick comprising 276
residential care rooms. The project represented the largest single capital works
development ever undertaken by the Australian Jewish community. The Randwick
campus has been an undeniable success. It not only provides a high standard of
accommodation and care which has been embraced by the community, but it also
proved to be a prudent financial investment. The valuation of the Randwick campus
in 2008, undertaken by respected firm Colliers International, was $50m more
than it cost to build, including the land value.
•
The provision of a high standard of care and accommodation which is recognised
both within Australia and internationally as being amongst the best in the world.
•
The maintenance of full occupancy at the Hunters Hill campus during the
Randwick commissioning phase. This was an extraordinary achievement given the
large number of beds that became available at Randwick and the significant
proportion of the Jewish Community that live in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.
•
The continual upgrading and refurbishment of the Home’s building stock to ensure
accommodation across all campuses, remains at a high standard and
comparable with modern facilities.
•
The development of a sustainable financial model that utilises income from full fee
paying Residents to cross-subsidise those with lesser means. This enables the
Home to care for a large proportion of financially disadvantaged Residents and to
cover both its operating costs and capital refurbishment expenses.
•
The introduction of a HomeCare service to support older persons living in the
community, which has grown to meet the increasing need for these services.
Executive Board of Management:
Treasurer Tom Mautner,
President David Freeman AM,
Secretary Max Kahn and
Vice-President Gary Inberg.

SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE JEWISH HOME ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012
The fact that the Home has been able to deliver these
achievements within a financially sustainable model, as
outlined in the Treasurer’s Report, and continues to
provide world-class accommodation and care services
without any reliance on the financial support from the
Jewish Communal Appeal (JCA), is simply astonishing.
Our ability to achieve this outcome is clearly enhanced
by the level of financial support we receive directly from
the community by way of bequests and donations and
we remain extremely grateful for the level of support
we receive.
With regard to the immediate past year, there have
been many highlights on which to report. In addition to
the numerous achievements relating to care and service
delivery, which are covered in detail in the CEO’s report,
here is a selection of some of the other highlights of
the year:
Dedication of the Nerichow Special
Care Unit, Hunters Hill
In December 2011, I had the privilege of presiding over
the dedication ceremony of the Nerichow Special Care
Unit at Hunters Hill, named in honour of the Late
Henriette (Hennie) Nerichow, a dear friend of the Home
and generous benefactor.
The dedication ceremony followed the completion of a
major refurbishment of this facility and the result is
unquestionably one of the most impressive and well
equipped Special Care Units in Australia.
It was extremely rewarding to see the tangible benefit a
bequest can have on the Quality of Life of people in our
care. I’d also like to acknowledge the contribution of the
Fete Committee which allocated proceeds from three
consecutive fetes towards this worthwhile project.
JCA Tours Montefiore Campuses
Earlier in the year we were delighted that the President
of the JCA, Mr Peter Philippsohn OAM, along with JCA
CEO, Ian Sandler, and Chairpersons of the various
JCA Executive Committees accepted our invitation to
tour our facilities.
The Montefiore Home is the largest constituent member
of the JCA and the largest provider of aged services to
the elderly in our community. Given that the Home
receives very little financial support from the JCA, the
Home believes it is important for executive members of
the JCA to fully appreciate the breadth, complexity and
essential nature of the services we provide, as well as
the vast difference between the quality of the Home’s
aged care facilities and the typical facilities operated by
commercial for profit providers. It was also important
to point out our capital requirements as we look to
expand services in order to meet the future needs of
an ageing population.
Whilst the Home operates within a sustainable financial
model whereby it is able to cover its operational
expenses as well as being able to fund the ongoing
refurbishment and upgrading of building stock and
infrastructure, what is missing is a mechanism for
funding future expansion, which will require significant
investment in new building work.
Under current JCA guidelines, Capital Appeals are
permitted every seven years, which simply doesn’t
provide the Home with the capacity to accumulate
sufficient funds to undertake large scale residential
aged care construction.
The fact that the Home receives little funding from the
JCA is by no means a criticism, simply a consequence
of the competing demands other organisations place on

the JCA in order to remain viable and to support the
various programs they deliver.
In my report last year I commented on our ongoing
pursuit of best practice and our close collaboration with
the University of NSW to establish a clinical research
chair on behalf of the Home.
As an advocate for the aged members in our community,
the Home feels it has an obligation to highlight the
needs of the elderly to the JCA and raise it as a priority.
It remains to be seen whether there is a solution to this
issue, but at least the tour by representatives of the
JCA is a step in the right direction.
Whilst the project was announced at the University’s
Dean’s lecture a year ago, the official launch of the
Montefiore Chair of Healthy Brain Ageing occurred
in October this year at a gala function held at
Leighton Hall in the grounds of the University’s
Randwick campus.
Supporting Palliative Care
I am delighted to advise that the research position is
to be held by the esteemed Scientia Professor Henry
Brodaty AO, with the objective of identifying better
practice in terms of dementia care and behavioural
management, and to enable this research to be
transferred, in a practical sense, to the delivery of
care services by our organisation.
Towards the end of 2011, the Home embarked on a
special project which involved the construction of a
Palliative Care Family Room within the Nursing Home
area of its Hunters Hill campus. A generous grant from
the Department of Health and Ageing was combined
with additional capital approved by the Montefiore
Board. I am delighted to advise that the project was
completed in February 2012.
The aim of the project was to create a room where the
family of a palliating Resident could support their loved
one at this very difficult time. This could be done in a
relaxed, private and spiritually supportive environment
where they can meet privately with the members of the
care team, social workers and others.
The room is fitted out with comfortable lounges, pull out
sofa beds for overnight stays, TV, DVDs, music, books,
etc. It also has its own kitchenette and bathroom and
the room itself is located only a short distance from any
part of the Nursing Home.
8
Official launch of Montefiore Chair of
Healthy Brain Ageing
The position is predominantly funded by a grant from
the Thomas Foundation and supported by the Montefiore
Home. I am extremely grateful to the Thomas Foundation
for recognising the benefit a research position such
as this can have to the delivery of care services to
people suffering from dementia and other cognitive
impairment. I encourage members of the community
to contact our Foundation and discuss ways to support
this worthwhile position.

With thanks
The Home is a vibrant and successful organisation and
there are many people that contribute to its success.
Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to thank everyone within
the confines of this report, but I would like to single out
a few individuals and groups for special mention.
Firstly, I’d like to thank our vibrant group of volunteers
who contribute so much to the wellbeing of our
Residents. I’d also like to specially mention our Ladies’
Committee, ably headed by Co-Presidents Annette
Joseph and Cathy Shapiro, for their efforts in raising
much appreciated funds for the Home.
During the year we conducted the Home’s 88th Annual
Fete and I would like to pay special tribute to Roy Cohen
and his fete committee for their efforts. After seven
years in the role as Fete Convenor, Roy has decided to
step down from the role and on behalf of the Home and
all of its Residents, I would like to sincerely thank Roy
for his significant contribution. I would also like to take
this opportunity to welcome Alma Goldman and Sylvia
Kohn as Co-Convenors of the Home’s upcoming fete
and I wish them every success in the role.
Our core business is providing care to the elderly so I
would like to acknowledge the contribution of our
outstanding nursing and support staff who, on a daily
basis, give quality care to our Residents. I’d also like to
acknowledge the efforts of our Executive Care Managers
and the managers of the various departments for their
commitment and professionalism.
I’d like to specially mention our CEO, Robert Orie, and
his Leadership Team whose hard work and expertise
allows the Home to be a leader in aged care and
achieve excellence.
Challah baking, a regular Resident activity. L-R: Randwick RAO,
Dana Alexander-Avtova, Randwick Resident Harold Leibowitz
and volunteer, Lana Levin.
The Home operates with a dedicated and cohesive
Board of Management and I would like to take the
opportunity to thank my Executive, Gary Inberg, Max
Kahn and Tom Mautner along with our fellow Board
members for their professionalism and loyalty.
Finally, thanks to the community – our Members,
Benefactors, Bequestors, Life Governors and Supporters
who enable us to continue to provide world-class
accommodation and care for the elderly in our community.
The Home benefits from a richness of Jewish Culture
and tradition and this is in no small way due to the
efforts of our wonderful Rabbi and Rebbetzen David
and Vicky Rogut.

CEO Annual Report 2011-12
Robert Orie
Earlier in the year I celebrated
ten years as Chief Executive
Officer of the Montefiore
Home and whilst over this
period I have reported on
many achievements and
milestones, I am delighted to
report that the past year has
been equally successful as we
continued to strive for even
higher standards of excellence
and service delivery.
What truly sets us apart from other aged care providers is the quality and
depth of the services we deliver to both the Residents’ accommodated in
any one of our outstanding campuses as well as the growing number of
clients accessing outreach services through our HomeCare division.
Whilst we have always taken enormous pride in the calibre of the clinical and nursing
services we provide, it is the inclusion of a broad range of services, such as
physiotherapy, social work, diversional and creative therapy, as well as our exceptional
Religious and Cultural program and enhanced catering and dining experience, that
makes a material difference to the Quality of Life of the older persons in our care.
Add to this the myriad of activities, entertainment and special events available for
Residents to enjoy and you start to get a feel for the rich tapestry of services the
Montefiore Home provides.
The quality and depth of these services is unmatched by any other aged care
provider and the fact that we can provide these services to all members of the
community, irrespective of whether they have the capacity to pay full fees or are
subsidised by the Home, is really quite remarkable.
Lifestyle – our vision
Montefiore has always placed emphasis on the social and psychological wellbeing of
our Residents. This continued throughout the year with a variety of activities, including
ever popular theme nights, couples’ nights and special events such as Melbourne Cup
Day. Our intergenerational and life history programs also add value to Residents’ lives.

Following on from the Volunteer department’s Better Practice award and presentation at the ACSAA Conference, BUPA visited the
Home to learn more about our Volunteer program. L-R: CEO, Robert Orie, Volunteer Manager, Hazel Stein, BUPA Representatives
Emillie McKenna, Jennifer Taylor and Kate Sellick, Volunteer and Community Relations Coordinator, Jane Silverman and Director of
Foundation, Roni Faktor.
All religious holidays and cultural traditions are
celebrated and historic landmarks, such as Yom
Ha’atzmaut, Yom Hazikaron, Kristallnacht, Remembrance
Day and Anzac Day, have been observed this year, as
they are every year.
Woollahra celebrates its 20th birthday
In October last year, the Montefiore Home at Woollahra
celebrated its 20th birthday, which marked the occasion
of its acquisition by Montefiore in October 1991. At the
time it was a ten-bed residence for new mothers
operated by mothercraft foundation Karitane. Since
acquiring the site, Montefiore has transformed the
facility into boutique-style accommodation with 50
Residents living in elegant and homely surroundings.
Montefiore Vice President, Gary Inberg, told the crowd
gathered for the birthday celebration that Woollahra
Manor had come a long way and that Residents are
able to enjoy the highest standards of care, tranquillity
and a quality lifestyle, surrounded by caring staff, friends
and family, in a secure and relaxing Jewish environment.
Montefiore President, David Freeman AM, paid special
tribute to the role of the late Hal Goldstein AM OBE in
initiating and driving the acquisition and development of
the Home.
Maintaining an unblemished record for
quality care
During the year the Hunters Hill, Woollahra and
Maroubra campuses underwent a full accreditation
review audit by the Aged Care Standards and
Accreditation Agency. The Randwick campus is due for
a full review audit in 2013.
I am delighted to advise that Montefiore upheld its
unblemished accreditation record with all of the
campuses successfully maintaining their accreditation
status by gaining outstanding results in all of the
Commonwealth standards.
The team of assessors involved in the site audits were
very impressed with the quality of care services
provided and the support available to relatives and staff.
It is worth acknowledging that our Maroubra facility,
which focuses on the wider community, continues to
perform exceptionally well and exceeds all expectations
in regard to Government standards and the delivery
of care.

More Awards for outstanding services
Every year the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation
Agency, through their Better Practice Awards,
recognise outstanding projects, initiatives or programs
that act as exemplars for other aged care homes to
aspire to. We have previously received a Better
Practice Award for our Holocaust Awareness Training
Program and our Volunteer Program.
I am delighted to advise that this year we received a
further two Better Practice Awards, this time relating
to our Advance Care Planning Program and our
Religious, Spiritual and Cultural Life Program. This
honour is the result of the hard work and dedication of
all staff at the Home and I would particularly like to
acknowledge the efforts of our Manager of Professional
Services, Jeannine Lew and the social work team as
well as our Spiritual Dean, Rabbi Rogut, Spiritual and
Cultural Manager, Lynda Dave, and our Lifestyle and
Cultural Co-Ordinators, Sami Shalom and Ludmila
Norilov, for overseeing and contributing to the
respective programs.
Montefiore ranked amongst the best in
the World
Having been the recipient of numerous awards for
excellence in service delivery, Montefiore has gained a
reputation as being amongst the finest and most
respected aged care organisations in Australia.
This has led to international interest which has seen
many foreign government health and aged care
representatives, as well as overseas aged care
organisations, visit Montefiore and tour its facilities. In
addition to gaining a better understanding of our care
services and Quality of Life program, international
visitors are particularly keen to visit the Randwick
campus which, as Montefiore’s newest facility, includes
design elements and a standard of accommodation that
are unequalled within Australia and considered to be
amongst the best in the world.
12
Randwick Resident, Tommy Tycho and L-R: Jennifer Hoy,
David Campbell, Sandro Constantino, Alexandre Oguey and

Montefiore recently hosted a visit from Dr Karima Velji,
Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Executive of
Baycrest, an internationally renowned Jewish aged and
health care organisation located in Toronto, Canada and
widely regarded as amongst the finest aged care
providers in the world.
Baycrest has actively sought to partner internationally
with other aged care providers considered to be
leaders in the field of aged care, which meet their
stringent standards of care delivery and attention to the
provision of Quality of Life for older persons. The
purpose of the partnership is to share knowledge and
to benchmark quality activities and outcomes amongst
the finest aged care providers in the world.
It therefore comes as a great honour to be invited by
Baycrest to join this elite group whereby Montefiore will
have an opportunity to contribute internationally to the
enhancement of aged care services.
During her visit to the Randwick campus, Dr Velji was
particularly impressed by our attention to the Quality of
Life of our Residents. Perhaps her thoughts were best
summed up when she said, ‘It was a pleasure to
witness your great organisation. It is so obvious that
you have built a stellar place of care.’
We look forward to our collaboration with Baycrest and
the tangible benefits this may bring to the care of older
persons everywhere.
With Thanks
We currently employ over 900 staff members and the
success of the past year is very much due to the
commitment and efforts of this wonderful group of
people. On behalf of the Residents, Board and the
entire management team, I thank you all for your
contribution during the year.
Our volunteers are also a valuable part of our workforce
and I thank them for donating their time and skills to
enhance the Quality of Life of our Residents.

Additionally, those people in the community who support
us through bequests, donations and memberships – you
have my deepest gratitude.
I would like to pay a special tribute to my Leadership
Team, the Executive Care Managers and all the
Departmental Managers who are entrusted with the
important task of overseeing the day to day operations
of the Home. Your efforts are truly appreciated.
During the year, we said an emotional farewell to
Hunters Hill Hostel Executive Care Manager, Bernadette
Young, the Home’s longest serving staff member. After
nearly 40 years of outstanding service to the Home and
our Residents, Bernadette decided to retire. Bernadette’s
commitment to the wellbeing of the Residents as well
as her support and passion for the Home is truly
inspirational and I thank her for her efforts.
On a personal note, I would like to take this opportunity
to thank the Board and, particularly, the Home’s President,
David Freeman AM, and the other members of the
Executive, for their support and guidance during the year.

Finally, I’d like to sincerely thank my Executive Assistant,
Lynn Mele, for her dedication and tireless commitment.
Your Generosity
With the Home now at full occupancy, we must look to the future in order to meet the ever-increasing
demand for accommodation and quality care for the aged members of our community. Since we do not
receive any Government funding for capital works and building developments, we depend on gifts,
endowments and bequests from our generous supporters for new projects and without the bequests we
have received over the years we could not have built the remarkable facilities that are Home to our
Residents. ‘I encourage potential donors to seriously consider assisting the Home when making their will’
urges President David Freeman AM.
To organise appropriate acknowledgement, or for further information, please contact President,

All calls will be held in the strictest confidence.
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT
13
Treasurer’s Annual Report
2011-12
Tom Mautner
As Treasurer of the
Montefiore Home and Chair
of its Finance Committee,
one of my key responsibilities
is to oversee the financial
performance of the Home
and to ensure it operates
within an affordable and
financially sustainable model.
A key component of financial sustainability is achieving the right balance
between providing care and its affordability. This is especially challenging
in the current economic environment where we are experiencing
historically low interest rates, which significantly impacts on the income
that can be generated from the refundable accommodation bonds held
on behalf of Residents.
The Home is fortunate to have a highly experienced senior management team who
seek to ensure that every dollar of expenditure is utilised efficiently to maximise the
Quality of Life of the Residents in our care. It is the Board’s responsibility to ultimately
determine the standard of care that the Home provides, responding to community
expectations whilst taking into account affordability over the long term.
The Home is truly fortunate to receive the ongoing support of the community by way
of donations and bequests that help support its benevolent and charitable endeavours.
Comprehensive Income for the Year
As you can see from the Summary of Comprehensive Income included with this
report, the Home had a very pleasing consolidated net profit of $7.4 million for the
year before depreciation and other adjustments. It is important to note that this
result includes income from all sources, including around $8 million from bequests
and a further $1.7 million from donations received during the year.
Government subsidies remain the largest single income source and contributed
$32.7million or 40.3% of total revenue. This was closely followed by income from
Resident fees, including bond periodic payments and retention, totalling $24.8 million
or 30.6% of total revenue. Investment income, the majority of which represents
income generated from the investment of accommodation bonds in interest bearing
deposits with the major banks, contributed $12.6 million or 15.5% of total revenue.
In addition to the bequests and donations mentioned above, which totalled $9.7million,
total fundraising income amounted to $10.15 million or 12.5% of total revenue.
In terms of expenditure, the provision of aged care services is extremely labour
intensive. Approximately 76% of the Home’s entire operating expenditure relates to
the wages paid to our staff. This figure is consistent across the industry and reflects
the nature of our business. To ensure we are able to attract and retain the best staff
possible, we offer our staff terms and conditions of employment that are highly
competitive, whilst at the same time being financially affordable.
Providing for Capital Refurbishment
You will note that the accounts provide $7.9 million as a provision for depreciation. It
has been suggested that the Home should set aside the full amount of this provision
in order to accumulate sufficient capital to replace buildings within the time frames
dictated by the relevant accounting standard. This would require the Home to set
aside $7.9 million per year based on the current provision for depreciation and would
result in a significant reduction in care and services provided by the Home.
The Board has given this matter consideration and concluded that the current capital
allocation of around $3-$4 million per year for upgrading and refurbishment, in
addition to the $2.5 million allocated to general maintenance and replacements, was
sufficient to maintain the Home’s building stock at contemporary standards and that
it could not justify setting aside more than this at the expense of the provision of care
and services. This allocation for capital refurbishment is well within the Home’s usual
cash operating surplus.
14
SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE JEWISH HOME ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012
Hunters Hill Residents, Morris and Anne Platus.
As part of the Home’s budget process, the Board takes
into consideration its projected capital works program,
which extends over a five year period, to ensure it is
being financially responsible and able to meet its capital
needs. It is prudent financial management that has
enabled the Home to routinely refurbish and upgrade
the Hunters Hill and Woollahra facilities so that they
remain at the forefront of high quality residential aged
care. Whilst the Randwick facility is still relatively new, it
also forms part of the capital works program.
Rabbi Rogut OAM and Rebbetzin Vicky Rogut admire the
Resident’s art work at the Monte exhibition.
Funding New Building Work
As noted in the President’s report, whilst the Home
operates within a financially sustainable model which
allows it to fund its operating and capital refurbishment
requirements, it will require substantial additional
financial support from the community in order to embark
on future new building projects, such as the ninety-bed
dementia specific facility currently approved by the NSW
Department of Planning for construction on the site of
the Randwick campus. I encourage you to support this
worthwhile project as we work towards delivering this
essential facility for the benefit of the community.
Statement of Financial Position
The Home’s Statement of Financial Position (Balance
Sheet) remains exceptionally strong with net assets of
more than $297 million. The Home has no external
debt apart from the refundable accommodation bonds
and interest free loans held on behalf of Residents and
which represents 94% of its total liabilities. This is a
remarkable achievement and probably unique amongst
other communal organisations.
In addition to its investment portfolio, which represents
about 12.4% of total assets, the majority of the Home’s
liquid assets are invested with major banks on term
deposit. All investments are closely monitored and finetuned to mitigate the effect of the current low interest
rates, however, the Home is determined to maintain a
sensible balance between its cash and financial assets
through the interest rate cycle.
Randwick Residents, Muli Chester and Cato Klein enjoy the
Maria Venuti concert.
The high level of liquidity represented by cash and
cash equivalent deposits ensures that the Home can
comfortably refund accommodation bonds as and
when necessary.
With Thanks
On behalf of the Executive and the Board, I would like to
thank our benefactors, volunteers, Ladies’ Committee,
Fete Committee and other supporters of the Home for
their efforts and continued support.
I would also like to welcome the Home’s new Director
of Corporate Services, Andrew Kew, and to extend
my appreciation and thanks to him and the members
of the Finance Department for their assistance during
the year.

The Montefiore Foundation
Roni Faktor, Director of Foundation
For the past 8 years the
Foundation programs and
initiatives have been
designed to maximise
awareness and support of
the Home from the wider
community, including our
Benefactors, Members,
Volunteers, Residents and
their Families
The past year has been a thriving and successful time for the Foundation,
and we are keenly aware that none of this could have been achieved
without our Benefactors, Life Governors, Members and Volunteers. It is
only through your ongoing generosity and invaluable commitment that
Montefiore is able to provide the frail aged in our community with such
exceptional standards of care and enhanced Quality of Life. The Foundation
team is extremely grateful for all of your support and looks forward to
continuing our relationships over the coming years.
We are motivated by your kindness and are committed to doing all we can to
acknowledge and encourage your generosity. Each member of our team seeks to
provide the highest calibre of donor, benefactor and volunteer services to ensure
your experience with us is always pleasant and professional. It is a privilege for us
to continue to be so closely involved with you, the community.
Since its inception more than 120 years ago, Montefiore’s driving mission has been
to provide the highest levels of aged care to our community. The Foundation was
established in 1988 to provide the Home with the additional financial support
necessary to provide this care, including for the financially disadvantaged, by building
relationships with the broader community and maximising stakeholder support.
Today, the Foundation encompasses Montefiore’s Community Development, Donor
Relations, Bequests, Memberships, Volunteers and Marketing and Communication
programs. Our professional and enthusiastic team works hard to develop and deliver
ongoing success and advancement in all of these crucial areas.
Some of the key initiatives achieved during the past year include:
• Maximising sources of income through donations, bequests, equipment donations,
simcha donations and naming rights, as well as membership acquisition and retention.
Bequests have a major role in establishing and maintaining the remarkable facilities
we offer our Residents and we are committed to demonstrating our gratitude.
• Encouraging Life Governorship as a meaningful way to demonstrate commitment
to Montefiore and the care of the frail aged in our community.
• Running a community visiting program through community visitors who establish
and maintain personal and supportive contact with benefactors to acknowledge
their ongoing involvement.
• Fostering donor relations by giving recognition to benefactors who honour the
memory of their loved ones with endowments, dedications, naming rights, financial
and equipment donations. With no government funding available for buildings and
development, we rely on the generosity of our donors to serve the growing needs
of our community.
• Implementing multi-media marketing and communications strategies to reinforce
our relationships with members and benefactors and build public awareness and
support. This includes our flagship LIFE magazine plus numerous online and
printed campaigns to inform our Residents, staff, volunteers and the community
about developments at the Home.
• Strengthening community relations with a range of initiatives involving individuals
and organisations. This includes intergenerational activities in partnership with
schools and youth groups to help younger people understand and learn from their
elders, while bringing joy and meaningful activity to the Residents.
• Promoting and managing a vibrant volunteer program. Volunteers play a key role
in supporting the Quality of Life of our Residents, through services that include
companionship, activity programs, hospital visits, transportation, discussion
groups, a Residents’ life history program and our annual Fete.

SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE JEWISH HOME ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012
A productive year, delivering on key
objectives
During the 2011/2012 financial year, we have focused
on our key objectives – to continue to position Montefiore
as a leader in aged care; to build strong relationships
with a diverse and growing range of stakeholders; and
to communicate Montefiore’s mission and vision to the
wider community and encourage their support. Our goal
for the forthcoming year is to respond to the ever
increasing needs of our ageing population by supporting
the proposed expansion of the Home and our services
in order to cater to the escalating demand.
We are grateful for the contributions of so many
individuals – our ambassadors, benefactors, donors,
volunteers and our loyal and dedicated staff. Their vision
and generosity of spirit enables the Montefiore Home to
provide and maintain outstanding levels of care.
We look forward to a year in which we will meet the
ongoing challenges of satisfying the needs of those
elderly members of the community who deserve the
very best care that we, as a community, can provide.
We formally acknowledge the passing of many dear friends
and supporters and, as always, remain most grateful for
their kind generosity and wish their loved ones long life.
“At times our own light goes out and
is rekindled by a spark from another
person. Each of us has cause to think
with deep gratitude of those who have
lighted the flame within us.”
The Ladies’ Committee
The Montefiore Ladies’ Committee continues to
raise awareness and provide valuable funds to
the Home
The Committee, headed by Co-Presidents Annette
Joseph and Cathy Shapiro, includes Treasurer Helen
Bloom, Secretary Railee Michelin, Vice President
Sandra Rosen and the committed team, Carole
Brickman, Wendy Engelander, Alma Goldman, Faye
Green, Roslyn Hart and Ruth Rosen.
At the Ladies’ Committee AGM, Co-Presidents Annette
Joseph and Cathy Shapiro reviewed the year and paid
tribute to their dedicated members for their ongoing
commitment and hard work. The Committee also
extended warm thanks to Hon. Auditor Aaron Polak and
Roni Faktor and the Foundation team for their support
and input. They also thanked President David Freeman
AM for his ongoing support.
The Ladies’ Committee achieved a total income of
$87,000 for the year ending 30 June 2012
Successful activities during the year included:
•
A trip to Bowral to see the tulips, including lunch
and afternoon tea in a magnificent country home.
•
A Trivia Night at the Double Bay Bowling Club,
attended by over 200 people and hosted by Wayne
Shapiro of Trivia Madness. Almost $10,000 was
raised for the Home, which the Committee will
channel towards the Montefiore Home Holocaust
Awareness Program.
•
La Traviata, an Opera evening at Mrs Macquarie’s
Chair, was a great success and will be repeated.
•
The monthly bridge days at Randwick and a bridge
evening at Double Bay.
•
Assisting at the annual Montefiore Fete at the ladies’
and men’s clothing stalls and the Devonshire Tea.
•
Running the Boutique at Randwick and Hunters Hill,
which continues to make a significant financial
contribution to the Home. The Committee thanked
Helen and Ken Bloom for their invaluable contribution
and assistance in stocking the Boutique.
Albert Schweitzer
President David Freeman AM extended his deep
gratitude to the Ladies’ Committee for their hard work,
dedication and enormous contribution to the Home.

THE MONTEFIORE FOUNDATION
19
The Volunteers Program
The Foundation also proudly incorporates the robust
Volunteers Program, run by Volunteer Manager, Hazel
Stein and Volunteer & Community Relations Coordinator,
Jane Silverman, and is a major contributor to the social
and emotional wellbeing of our Residents. This was
reinforced last year, when the program received the
2011 Better Practice in Aged Care award in the
Resident Lifestyle category, granted by the Aged Care
Standards and Accreditation Agency (ACSAA).
Subsequently, we were invited to present on our program
at this year’s ACSAA conference. The Home also hosted
groups from Bupa, The San, a group from Korea and
the Intergenerational Unity Association of Japan, who all
wished to learn more about our program.
Recruitment
Over the past year, application of proven strategies has
ensured the growth and effectiveness of the program.
These included skills assessments, and six mandatory
orientation sessions held for new volunteers. This year,
we extended our volunteer service to support Residents
at Camelot Nursing Home. The volunteer program now
operates across all four campuses.
The number of volunteers from July 2011 to June 2012
stands as follows:
•
110 new adult volunteers and 51 new student
volunteers
•
550 active volunteers
•
Total hours contributed across all campuses: 31,135
Recognition and Retention
Recognising each volunteer’s dedication encourages
long term commitment and enhances the day-to-day
enjoyment of their role.
A popular new initiative this year was a monthly birthday
lunch held in the Hostel dining rooms at Randwick and
Hunters Hill for volunteers who celebrated their
birthdays during that particular month.
Each year we celebrate National Volunteers’ Week with
a program that includes training, socialising and
entertainment. This year’s workshop explored the use
of laughter as positive therapy. The 2011 Thank You
Volunteers function took the form of a harbour cruise,
where we were presented with the trophy and certificate
for the Better Practice Award in Aged Care. We also
maintain ongoing relationships with volunteers through
all our Montefiore publications.
A further initiative was an online survey, designed to
obtain feedback on how volunteers react to their roles,
enabling us to respond to their needs, and fine tune our
planning for the year ahead.
Ongoing training helps volunteers enhance their skills. In
addition to mandatory orientation, specific new workshops
were run on hospital visiting and training for boutique
duties. New staff members are now briefed about the
role of the volunteers at staff orientation sessions.
20
Residents, Eva and Oswald Grable with volunteer, Judy Moss.
Volunteer-supported activities
The range of activities in which volunteers play a vital
role is ever expanding. This year, we ramped up our
highly productive knitting program, establishing a new
group at Monte Terrace, and have donated knitted
garments to Jewish House. Additionally, a new flower
arranging group started at Hunters Hill this year. New
therapeutic programs include a volunteer massage
therapist for Nursing Home Residents and hand
massages at Woollahra.
The Life History program continues to be popular and
valuable for Residents, their families and the volunteers.
They not only record the life stories, but also provide
companionship and friendship.
In a Community Service role, we support participants in
the Duke of Edinburgh Award program, and provide
fieldwork placements for tertiary students.
Young volunteers continue to assist culminating in the
success of a new candle lighting service for Nursing
Home Residents. A final new initiative is an informative
address by a 2nd generation Holocaust survivor
volunteer, to schools and students.
“The value of a man resides in what
he gives and not in what he is
capable of receiving.”
Albert Einstein
We thank the Foundation, Board and Management for
their consistent and generous support.
To our valued volunteers – a sincere thanks for
bringing honour to the program.

Club Monte
President, David Freeman AM, Director of Client and

Montefiore HomeCare 2012
Montefiore HomeCare is an initiative of the Montefiore
Home that provides individual solutions to support aged
people both in the wider community and within their
own homes. Run by Shafina Maneck, HomeCare
Manager and Danielle Wakerman, HomeCare
Coordinator, the past year has been one of the most
successful years to date. Many new services have been
launched to assist our clients to continue living in their
own homes for as long as they feel comfortable and
safe. We also provide support to Residents of the
Montefiore Home in the form of relocation services,
companionship and community access.
At Montefiore HomeCare we strive to be at the
forefront of providing best practice in service delivery.
Our services are professional, dedicated and based on
the best current evidence and research. With this
objective in mind, some of the highlights of the past
year have included:
•
Attending the National Community Care Conference
in Adelaide, which showcased some of the world
leaders in community aged care sharing their
research and experience.
•
Attending the Community Care Management
course. This is an intensive six day comprehensive
training, highly recommended for staff working in the
aged care community setting.
•
Attending the Information Technology in Aged Care
Conference to source a system that is highly
effective and consistent with our philosophy of care
that will allow client care to be holistically managed.
With all of the exciting new initiatives in HomeCare we
have also launched a Facebook business page, and built
good relationships with local General Practitioners and
hospital discharge planners to ensure we are always in
contact with relevant parties associated with our clients.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the
amazing team at Montefiore for their ongoing support
with this much needed service in our community.
In the last year the Day Centre at Hunters Hill, Club
Monte, has extended its programs with the intention
being to lift the spirits of the participants and give them
a more positive experience. We concentrated on three
main areas:
1. The Art Therapy Program, which strove to provide
our members with the opportunity for meaningful
artistic expression without pressure that went
beyond our normal craft activities.
2. The Well-Being Therapy Program, which included
working with and informing members on subjects
such as pain and stress relief, eating for health,
and skin care.
3. The Music, Movement and Dance Therapy Program.
This was an extension of our exercise program and
normal musical entertainment.
All sessions were very well received and these new
challenges have had a stimulating and uplifting effect on
our members. We look forward to continuing our work
and as a result of the very positive feedback from our
members, have extended the scope of our programs in
the upcoming year.
Burger Centre
This year saw the celebration of The Burger Centre’s 21st
Birthday, at a time when the numbers of people attending
programs are at an all-time high. Highlights include:
•
A range of programs for older people such as
entertainers, speakers, theme days and outings run
by an experienced professional team of staff.
•
Support services for families of loved ones who are
living with memory loss and dementia. The addition
of a social worker has enabled more support to be
provided and a series of Ageing and Memory loss
information evenings has recently commenced.
•
The Positive Ageing program that runs Hydro-cise,
Tai Chi and Strength and Balance classes and
attracts a wide range of individuals.
The Centre looks forward to another successful year
ahead with a focus on dementia and collaborations with
Montefiore and the new CHeBA, and on a broader level,
encouraging the community to take an active role in
their ageing.
THE MONTEFIORE FOUNDATION
21
Religious and Spiritual Life
at Monte
The Religious Department
ensures that all Residents
can participate in
meaningful religious and
spiritual experiences.
The work of our Religious Affairs Department is fully integrated in the
Montefiore Homes – from the Kashrut of the Home and Synagogue services,
to the activities that are offered on a daily basis.
The Department strives to offer Residents meaningful religious and spiritual
experiences.
Shabbat
Our Shabbat program is a unique experience for our Residents, and includes:
• Female Residents individually lighting Shabbat candles (including our Special Care
Residents);
• Our Shabbat Trolley brings the Shabbat experience to those who are incapacitated;
• Kiddush on Shabbat/Festivals is recited in each area. This includes a mini service
in Special Care Units;
• Residents are given Aliyot and special call-ups in Shule – observing Yahrtzeits,
special celebrations, etc.
• Various Jewish pre- and primary school students share Shabbat with our Residents
each Friday. A student and Resident are chosen as the “Imma” (mother) and
“Abba” (father) and together they light the candles and say the prayers. This
intergenerational experience is special for both the children and our Residents.
• Close to 50 Residents light their own candles on a Friday night. Volunteers and
school students assist with the Candle Lighting program.
Jewish Festivals
Each Jewish festival is celebrated to the full through services and activities. Purim is a
time to dress up and have fun; Sukkot saw beautifully decorated Sukkot being utilised
for shiurim, family teas and just sitting and having a cup of coffee. Pesach saw almost
1,000 Residents and their families enjoying 1st and 2nd night sedarim, and the same
for Rosh Hashanah dinners; Yom Hashoah and Kristallnacht were commemorated
appropriately and with a dignified short service; Simchat Torah was celebrated with
festive functions, which allowed even our immobile Residents to be wheeled around
the “bima”’ carrying the Sifrei Torah.
Zikaron
The Zikaron Services continue to offer Monte Staff and Residents an opportunity to
mourn and farewell Residents who have passed away. Many families have also used
this service as an opportunity to write a letter of thanks, which is read at the service.
Minyanim
The Religious Department is now informed when Residents are very ill or nearing the end
of life. This allows Rabbi Rogut to offer early support to the family during this very difficult
time. In fact, more families than ever this year have requested to hold their Minyanim at
Montefiore – acknowledging not only the important place the Home represents for their
loved ones, but also the relationship that is forged between Resident and Resident and
between Resident and staff. The choice to hold the Minyan at Montefiore means that, as
well as the family, Residents and staff also have the opportunity to attend.
Better Practice Award
A Better Practice Award was awarded to Montefiore for our Spiritual, Religious and Cultural
Program. Better Practice Awards are given to those high quality programs and initiatives
which can be an example to other Aged Care Facilities. A presentation of the Spiritual,
Religious and Cultural Program will be made at the Better Practice Conference in 2013.
Montefiore’s multi-disciplinary team model of care means that Religious Department staff
are consulted and involved in many aspects of a Resident’s care, as well as the general
running and operation of the Home.

SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE JEWISH HOME ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012
The 88th Annual Fete
The Montefiore Annual Fete
brings our community
together in a spirit of
commitment and goodwill.
One of our most consistent
fundraising events, the Fete
makes a regular, significant
contribution to the Home.
The Fete continues to be one of Montefiore’s biggest community events
and 2011 was no exception.
2011 marked the 88th year of the Fete, and the event was a testament to volunteer
energy and commitment. Armies of volunteers converged on Hunters Hill in the days
leading up to ‘Fete day’, while the organisers and stall holders put hours of work into
making sure the event was a success. Supporters of all ages came along to enjoy a
fabulous day of fun.
The Fete is the longest running and best attended communal event in the Sydney
Jewish Community. More than 100 volunteers manned a variety of stalls that
included menswear, ladies’ wear, handbags, books, cosmetics, jewellery, glassware,
children’s toys, food and drinks, tombola and portobello stalls.
The event attracts young and old from around Sydney, and is recognised as an
integral part of the local Hunters Hill community. It is a perfect example of communal
and intergenerational sharing and interaction.
Fete organiser Roy Cohen paid tribute to the generosity of Fete sponsors and donors.
He praised and thanked his committee and the volunteers who worked tirelessly,
both before the event and after, as well as Masada College students for their
significant participation.
We are approaching our 89th Fete in 2012, and after seven years in the role of
Fete Convenor, we have regretfully accepted the resignation of Roy Cohen from this
role. Roy and his family have been significantly linked to the Montefiore Home and the
Fete for three generations, including 33 years as a stallholder. We are most grateful
to Roy, his committee and all the volunteers who helped raise funds for the
refurbishment of the Hunters Hill Special Care Unit. The funds generated by the 89th
and future Fetes, will continue to help support improvement of our facilities.
Although Roy was able to organise the Fete on his own last year, going forward, we feel
that it is only fair for a team to take over this mammoth task. We are fortunate that Roy
will be available to work alongside the new team this year to assist with the transition.
We are thrilled to announce the new Fete committee for 2012. Our new Fete
Convenors are dedicated volunteers, Alma Goldman and Sylvia Kohn, who are joined
by committee members and volunteers, Maurice Kiss and Sam Zweig. We wish
the new committee the best of luck and look forward to keeping you updated on
their achievements.

Members and Life Governors
Our members and Life Governors, currently more than
2000 in number – share our commitment to enhancing
the quality of life of the aged in our community. Their
interest, support and dedication to the Home is greatly
valued by the Residents, the Board of Management and
staff of the Home.
This list represents a cross section of the Jewish community
and is, in the words of former NSW Governor Gordon Samuels,
’tangible evidence of the fact that the Home occupies a
special place in the hearts of the Jewish people of this city
and state’.
Membership of the Home extends a range of benefits to
those who subscribe for a fee of only $45 per year. Members

You are invited to become a
MontefioreLifeGovernor
Life Governorship represents a deep commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the frail aged
in our community.
With your support Montefiore can continue to provide an exceptional standard of service
and care, while embracing the richness of Jewish culture and tradition.

MontefioreLifeGovernor
The generosity and vision of Life Governors enables us to provide the highest level of care for the elderly in our
community regardless of their financial situation.
More than 30% of our 740 Residents are financially disadvantaged and unable to cover all or part of their
cost of care. This results in a shortfall of approximately $25,000 per Resident, per year.
In addition, one in three of our Residents is a Holocaust Survivor, with their own complex and unique care
needs. In order to best support our Residents and their families we have developed an integrated training and
care program for our staff which equips them with the necessary skills to address these needs.
As a community, we are faced with a dramatic increase in the ageing population and a significant rise in the
incidence of dementia; within the Jewish community there are five new cases of dementia diagnosed every week.
Demographic evidence shows that the number of aged people requiring our care will at least double over the
next ten to twenty years.
Montefiore’s residential campuses are currently operating at full capacity and have growing waiting lists. We do not
receive any Government funding for vital Capital Works and the Government funding for care that we do receive only
partially covers the operating costs of the Home, which are currently more than $58 million per annum. Without
your support we cannot fulfil the future demands of our community for specialised accommodation and care.
Please complete the Acceptance below, or alternatively contact us on the details below for more information.

Montefiore Bequestors
Over the years we have gratefully received numerous generous bequests and it is the foresight
and generosity of these bequestors which have enabled us to continue to provide excellent
levels of care and accommmodation for the elderly in our community regardless of their
financial situation.
Making a bequest to Montefiore is a powerful way to make a lasting difference to the lives of future generations. The
aged population is predicted to double by 2050 and as Montefiore is already at full capacity with growing waiting lists,
we urgently need to expand in order to meet this escalating demand. We are grateful to the following people for their
generosity to the aged Jewish community.
