Chapter 2:
Installing the TriGeo SIM appliance
Introduction
The TriGeo Security Information Manager (or TriGeo SIM) system is based on software
modules called Agents, and on the management of these Agents and their information.
Agents are installed on each appropriate workstation, server, and network device (where
applicable). Agents communicate the logging data from each device’s security products to a
Manager. These security products include anti-virus software, network-based intrusion
detection systems, and logs from operating systems and firewalls.
Agents collect each product's security-related event data, normalize this data, and then pass the
normalized data on to the Manager, which is a secure point for the management of Agents. All
data received from the Agents are processed by the Manager's policy engine; and when needed,
the Manager initiates appropriate action.
These actions can include notification of a problem via the TriGeo Console, email, or pager;
blocking an IP address; shutting down or rebooting a workstation; and passing the alerts on to
the TriGeo database for future analysis and reporting with the Reports application.
You can configure security policies based on the alerts retrieved from the security products that
are installed on the Agents and the network. The TriGeo Console provides a dedicated,
comprehensive, graphical interface that eases the configuration and management of the TriGeo
system.
This book explains the procedures for installing the TriGeo Security Information Manager
appliance, TriGeo InDepth appliance (sold separately), the TriGeo Console and TriGeo Reports
modules, and the Agents.
11
Installing the TriGeo SIM appliance
Installation sequence
TriGeo pre-configures and installs the Manager software on the SIM appliance(s), as
appropriate for the size of the installation. Each of your SIMs is licensed to control and connect
to a given number of Agents based on the size of your organization, the total number of desired
Agents, and your potential for future expansion.
TriGeo then sends the SIM to you with these instructions for installation. You are responsible
for physically installing the SIM and connecting it into your network.
To install the TriGeo system in the correct sequence:
1. Install the TriGeo SIM appliance and connect it to your network, as described in this chapter.
2. If you have purchased a TriGeo InDepth appliance, install it next, before you install
anything else. See “Installing the TriGeo InDepth appliance” on page 17.
3. Install the TriGeo Console and TriGeo Reports on any workstations that require access to
the Manager and Agents. The TriGeo Console is normally installed on the system
administrator’s, the network administrator’s, or the network security administrator's
workstation.
You can then use the TriGeo Console to perform nearly all of the configuration and
management of the TriGeo system. See “Installing the TriGeo SIM Console” on page 21 for
more information.
Note: Installing the TriGeo Console is a straightforward process, much like
installing any other piece of software. If you have problems during
installation, the installation process is addressed in TriGeo’s online training
sessions.
4. Finally, install TriGeo’s Agent software on all appropriate network nodes. The Agent
software monitors the network security products on each machine (such as intrusion
detection systems, anti-virus software, and the operating system) for potential securityrelated alerts.
In order to use these network security products with your TriGeo SIM, you must properly
configure the Agent software so that it becomes integrated with each product. For more
information, see the TriGeo SIM Product Integration Manual.

Installing the TriGeo SIM appliance
Installing the TriGeo SIM
Before you begin
Before installing the TriGeo Security Information Manager (SIM), it is highly recommended
that you have fully-functioning internal domain name resolution services (DNS) on the internal
network. Without DNS, the TriGeo SIM may not be able to resolve internal hostnames to IP
addresses, and any installed TriGeo Agents and Consoles be unable to resolve the SIM’s
hostname. The TriGeo system generally functions without full internal DNS; however each
Agent must have a unique DNS name. Currently, WINS is not supported as an alternative to
using DNS.
Installing the appliances
1. Remove the TriGeo Security Information Manager (SIM) appliance from any packaging.
2. Choose a secure location for the SIM. Normally, the SIM is located in a datacenter or server
room that is well protected.
3. Plug the SIM into a safe power outlet, preferably one that is surge protected with battery
backup.
4. Plug the SIM’s management port into the network. On a system with several network ports,
this is usually the primary port, marked with a 1.
5. If you purchased multiple TriGeo appliances, such as a TriGeo SIM Level 4 or TriGeo
InDepth, connect their additional network ports to each other appropriately.
• First, connect the TriGeo SIM appliances to each other using the next available port.
• Then, connect the TriGeo InDepth appliance to your TriGeo SIM appliance using the
next available port. For more information on the InDepth installation process, see
“Installing the TriGeo InDepth appliance” on page 17.
6. If you desire network-based IDS coverage with Snort, you can use the SIM’s additional
network ports. Plug each additional port into the appropriate network segment. Then
configure any accompanying switches to properly redistribute network traffic to the SIM.
13
Installing the TriGeo SIM appliance
Before you power the appliance
Your TriGeo SIM most likely arrived preconfigured with the appropriate network settings. The
first step in this section is only provided in the event that you need to reconfigure the network
settings before placing the appliance on your network.
1. Before you power the TriGeo SIM and proceed with its configuration, answer the following
questions:
• Are you going to assign the TriGeo SIM a static IP address, or have a DHCP server
assign the address? If you choose to allow a DHCP server to assign the address, it is
recommended that you reserve a reasonable lease so the IP address does not change.
• If you are using DHCP, does your DHCP server assign DNS addresses?
• If you are using a static IP address, you will need to know the IP address you wish to
assign to the SIM, and the subnet mask of the network.
• For a static IP address and for a DHCP server that does not assign DNS, you will need
to know DNS addresses for your network.
• Are you going to access the SIM remotely (via SSH) or are you going to use a keyboard
and monitor for access?
2. If you are going to use a keyboard and monitor to directly access and configure the SIM,
make sure they are plugged in before powering the SIM appliance.
3. After you are prepared with the above information, turn the SIM appliance’s power on.
Configuring the TriGeo SIM appliance
Your TriGeo SIM most likely arrived preconfigured with the appropriate network settings. This
section is only provided in the event that you need to reconfigure the network settings before
placing the SIM appliance on your network.
1. After the SIM is fully powered, you can begin configuring the network parameters. To
proceed with network configuration, see the chapter called “Using the Manager Network
Appliance” in the TriGeo SIM User Guide. In particular, see the netconfig command in
chapter’s “appliance menu commands” section.
2. After you configure the network, verify that DNS is functioning before you proceed with
configuring or installing any Agents. Your operating system should have the necessary tools
for verification, including nslookup or dig, or you can rely on your DNS server's database
for this information.
14
Installing the TriGeo SIM appliance
3. Apply your TriGeo SIM appliance license. This license is available on the TriGeo Customer
Portal. To apply it, use the CMC manager menu’s licenseupgrade command. For more
information, see the chapter called “Using the Manager Network Appliance” in the TriGeo
SIM User Guide. In particular, see the licenseupgrade command in chapter’s “manager
menu commands” section.
15
Chapter 3:
Installing the TriGeo InDepth appliance
Introduction
TriGeo InDepth is an add-on appliance and plug-in application that are sold separately. If
purchased, each TriGeo SIM has its own dedicated InDepth appliance that is mounted in a rack
with the SIM. The InDepth appliance stores all of the original log file source data that passes
through a particular TriGeo SIM. The log data is stored in its entirety, in real time, as it originally
occurs from each host (network device) and source (application or tool) that is monitored by the
SIM.
TriGeo pre-configures and installs the InDepth software on the InDepth appliance. Your
InDepth appliance is licensed to receive a certain amount of data per day based on the size of
your organization and potential for future expansion.
TriGeo then sends the InDepth appliance to you with these instructions for installation. You are
responsible for physically installing the appliance and connecting it into your network.
Note: Install and configure the InDepth appliance immediately after you install
and configure the TriGeo SIM appliance, and before you install anything
else.
Installing the TriGeo InDepth appliance
