General Comments on Nutrition and the use of Liquid Products
The comment is often made that if we have balanced and properly supplemented feed we should have no need for extra nutrients
applied via the water. This is not an unreasonable statement and the technology of premix manufacture and feed formulation is very
advanced and produces good results. As a premix manufacturer ourselves we spend a lot of time keeping up with the latest in poultry
nutrition.
However, the following points I do feel explain why we can achieve an improvement when extra nutrients are applied.
1.
Birds will quite frequently reduce intake when placed under stress – thus no matter how good the feed is, if it is not
eaten performance will suffer. However, birds under stress will almost always continue to drink.
2.
Day old chicks are still using up Yolk sac for nutrients – they tend to scatter more feed than they eat – but again they will
always drink.
3.
At specific parts of the cycle there may be a positive effect from giving birds specific nutrients – these may only be of
economic relevance for a few days. Thus whilst it would be uneconomic to fortify the feed on a constant basis with these,
relatively expensive nutrients, there is a real economic benefit in supplementing nutrients through the water at the required
periods.

We can easily use specific liquid blends to supplement the birds’ diets at specific periods – it would be impractical to make a
special feed for a short period of time, mill management and farm management could not handle such 'specials'.
Liver Metabolism and Water Supplementation
In our experience, we have found that attention to the nutritional aspects of liver metabolism has paid off substantial dividends in terms
of Breeder and Broiler performance.
Breeders
These birds are reared to a restricted weight and then need to produce a substantial egg mass. Egg production places huge demands on
the liver in terms of fat metabolism. We therefore have developed programmes to help the liver at these times of maximum stress.
‘Hepatobooster’ is formulated to maximise liver health and also to assist fat metabolism and turnover.
The following is a normal usage schedule for ‘Hepatobooster’:
Broiler Breeders
Day 1-3
Add 1 litre per 1000 litres drinking water over 3 days 70 litres/1000 birds
= 0.1 litre approx/1000
Weeks 25 to 28
3 days per week. 0.3 ml per bird per day for the 3 days.
3 weeks x 0.3 x 3 = 0.9 x 3 = 2.7 ml per bird = 2.7 litres /1000
Weeks 39 to 42
3 days per week. 0.3 ml per bird per day for the 3 days. 3 weeks x 0.3 x 3
= 0.9 x 3 = 2.7 ml per bird = 2.7 litres /1000
Weeks 52 to 54
3 days per week. 0.3 ml per bird per day for the 3 days. 3 weeks x 0.3 x 3
= 0.9 x 3 = 2.7 ml per bird = 2.7 litres/1000
Total Consumption:
Each 1,000 breeder hens:

Rationale Behind the Breeder Programme
Day old to 3 days:
• Here we take a chick which has been living in the egg for 3 weeks. Its total nutrients have come from the egg yolk. It is a fat
metaboliser. We take it and try to convert it to a starch metaboliser in one day! Clearly this places huge stress on the liver.
Birds at this age drink far more than they eat as they finish off the yolk sac. ‘Hepatobooster’ is of great assistance here.
Up to and around peak production Weeks 25 to 28:
• Laying is commencing, egg yolk is very high in fat. Breeder feed is not very high in fat. The liver is working very hard to achieve
maximum egg mass output. Again this places stress on the liver and may result in impaired production, increased mortality or
a reduction in egg quality from a nutritional quality aspect.
• The Liver is the organ responsible for processing any toxins present in the body – an example would be mycotoxins which can
be very harmful to hatchability and overall bird health.
Weeks 38 to 42 and every 10 weeks after:
• Production has peaked but egg production is still pressurising the liver. We must help the bird to keep Liver metabolism at a
maximum to maintain egg output and quality of egg content.
• A healthy Liver processes any toxins present.
Broiler Programme
Although the period is much shorter never the less the pressure on the liver remains intense. Our normal programme for
Hepatobooster in commercial broilers is as follows:
Commercial broilers
Day 1-3
add 1 litres per 1000 litres drinking water over 3 days = 70 litres drinking water per 1000 birds
= 0.1 litre approx.
Day 10 to 12 (feed change)
Add 1 litre per 1000 litres water. 3 days - total water consumption = 285 litres/1000 birds
= 0.285 litres of Hepatobooster
Day 20, 21, 22 (feed change)
Add 1 litres per 1000 litres water. 3 days – total water consumption = 546 litres/1000 birds
= 0.546 litres of Hepatobooster
Total Hepatobooster per 1000 birds is 0.1+0.285+0.546 = 0.931
Rationale behind the Broiler programme
Days 1 to 3
• As with the breeders: these birds are converting from fat metabolises to starch digesters. We should help them with this
stress.
Day 10 to 12
• This is the first feed change. The birds are going from a low fat diet to a higher fat diet.
• Frequently feed intake will stall for a few hours up to a day – in a 35 day life a half day is a long time.
• Hepatobooster aids the liver in fat metabolism while also providing a soluble energy source to help the transition
period.
Day 20, 21, 22 - Feed change
• At this stage birds are moving onto a higher density feed, substantial increases in fat levels. Again intake can stall and
the liver is under pressure to metabolise higher fat levels. Hepatobooster helps maintain feed intake and provides soluble
energy for the transition. Also by aiding feed digestion at this time we see an improvement in litter quality.

Feeding instructions:

times of stress, eg. feed change, birds being moved
and as birds grow.
The use of Maxi Min Forte can support bone strength,
thus if broilers are intended to be grown to heavier
weights, a period of 3 days treatment at day 14 and
again at day 21 will help bone structural strength.
Note: For older hens 2-3 days treatment at week 50
and 55 will help reduce losses from bone breakages.

Broiler Chicks
Day 1 to Day 3 - include in clean drinking water at 1 litre per
1000 litres of water.
At this stage of a birds life it is changing from being a fat
metaboliser to a largely starch metaboliser. Chicks go from living
on the yolk inside the egg and then absorbing the remaining
contents of the yolk sac for the first days of life and changing to a
largely cereal based diet relatively low in fat. This is a severe
metabolic shock and normally results in low feed consumption
for the first few days, however water is consumed at this time.
The use of Hepatobooster for these days supports liver function
and helps birds to start eating. All intake improvements help
overall crop performace.
Composition: Sorbitol, Rosemary
Change of Feeds:
Use for 3 days when changing feeds. It is normal to change
broiler feeds at approx day 14 and day 21. In both cases it is from
a lower fat to a higher fat diet – this again puts pressure on the
birds metabolism and especially the liver. Disturbances to feed
intake can occur at these times.
Layers and breeder hen intake target is 0.2ml per day.
Where ambient temperature is in the range of 20-26˚C
mix at a rate of 1 litre per 1,000 litres of clean drinking
water and feed for 3-5 days. Where environmental
temperatures are higher adjust mixing rate to allow for
increased water intake. This can maintain production.
Typically Hepatobooster is given at weeks 50 and 55 of lay
and again a week 60 depending on how long it is planned to
keep the flock in production.
