Circles - Casa Allegra Community Services
August 2005 Vol 10. No. 2 www.casaallegra.org 415.499.1116x115 1975 30 2005 C ircles is the theme of our 30th Anniversary Celebration. Everywhere we look Casa Allegra Community Services is filled with interdependent, intertwined, overlapping circles. Two young women began this adventure with 5 children with significant disabilities. The circles began with Missy, Michael, Janette, Tom and Lisa who all went to school together. Eileen and Chris knew each one of these children prior to opening CACS. They had been students of Eileen’s sister, Mary, who was Chris’ mentor. As we grew, we found Nick, who had gone to school with the other children, and Nicki, the younger brother of a friend. Steven, Scott, Julia, Eileen, Michael, and their active families crossed paths, intersected circles and advocated non stop for their children. Then there were Richard, Caroline, and Bob who knew each other when they were institutionalized. Dusty, Jonathan, Kim, Jesus, Elijah, Caitlin, Scarlett, Gavin, Megan, Krystal and Brian have known each other since childhood and continue to share their friendships daily as young adults. Lisa was the director of our first community based day service who became good friends with one of the directors, Alison. Alison married one of the founder’s brothers, Tim, who was the brother-in-law to our administrative assistant Debbie. Through those circles, Joe, Donna, Don, Kevin, Manetta, and Robin all became part of several circles of friends and community. Golden Gate Regional Center and word of mouth connected many circles and we found Jamie, Mike, Cathy, Rigo, Kevin, Andy, Mia, Jared, Larry, Marina, Joelle, Estelle, Alesa and Stephan. So the circles grow and connect and overlap. It is amazing that something as simple as a circle can represent so much and become so integral to the quality of one’s life. ~ Chris Bonfiglio, CACS Executive Director Marin Designer Showcase Benefits CACS C asa Allegra Community Services is delighted to be among this year’s Heart Tug recipients selected by The Auxiliary of The Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin (CVNL). Calendar Chevy's Day: Weds. 9/14 Marin Designer Showcase: 9/27-10/15 CACS Guest Staffing: Tues. 10/11 30th Anniversary Gala: Sat. 10/1 Parent Meeting: Thurs. 10/27 Guest Speaker, Tim Pidgeon Carlos Lopez Creative Writing Class College of Marin, Spring 2005 An Artist's Life by Caitlin Lannon A are. Dedicated to Carlos s parents receiving support from Casa Allegra Community Services for our son Michael, we know how fortunate we We have had many people come and go as support staff. Some that really cared and others who cared but felt it was just a job. I mentioned fortunate, that does not even begin to describe how Michael and our family feel about Carlos Lopez. Carlos has been Michael’s support staff for over five years. He believes in making a difference. It is not just a job to Carlos. His support comes from his heart. He is generous and kind and always patient. His dedication is to be honored. There has never been a problem that Carlos did not resolve with dignity and respect. He has taught me to have patience. At times I need to be reminded and Carlos is always there to support Mom too. Thank you Carlos for your friendship. You truly make a difference. With Gratitude, The Bruciati Family I was happy when I started college, Felt it with my heart and with my spirit. Now I want to take more classes. It’s in my dreams. I love to paint flowers and rainbows in the summer. Painting tulips I relax and feel good. I listen to my heart I keep my spirit free. Writing Is like water and coffee, It flows. Casa Allegra Day Program and the Human Race by Scarlett Murphy I go to Casa Allegra every day from 8 am to 3 pm, sometimes even on Saturdays or Sundays. I help Daniel Reichling, our program director, with the recycling project. We recycle old cell phones, ink cartridges and toner. I go to companies that need their recyclables picked up. When I am all done I go bowling, or for a walk in the park, or to the library. Saturday, May 7th was a major fundraising event for Casa Allegra. Last year we raised $25,000 for our program alone. People walk, run, or just hang out. We met at 7:30 a.m. at Marin Civic Center. Clients, staff and parents walked 3 miles around the duck pond. After the race there are always games and food. It was all over by noon. We had fun. Peter and Jane Murphy and a group of their dear friends conceived the first tournament in 2003. This year the tournament field swelled to 21 teams representing friends of board members, friends of clients, friends of friends. Ralph Salivimini, President of the Marin Bocce League and owner of Marin Cheese Co generously donated a fabulous selection of cheeses for an hors d’oeuvre table. The Bruciati family, Jeanette, Ron and CACS client Michael attended their first bocce tournament and were delighted to see Ralph, a friend of Jeanette’s brother, Joe Sanchez, a regular CACS supporter who is also in the cheese business. Ralph also knew first time bocce player, Chantal Griffin, neighborhood buddy of development director Jane Scurich. Chantal once owned the 6th Ave Cheese Shop and is a friend of both Joe and Ralph. And so the circles of friendship and support continue – people who know people who know people who believe in caring and coming together to have a good time and support a cause in which they believe. And quite a tournament it was! The winners round was never more than one point apart in scoring. The final victory was won at 5 pm, long after most players had departed. Congratulations to Tom & Stevie Serleth and Phil & Francine Lynch for victory and perseverance and to 2nd place team Angelo & Elaine Devincenzi, Tom & Mimi Bonge and Ed & Doris Basko. We are so grateful to our many sponsors, donors and volunteers who helped to make this day a success. Derek Romano designed our delightful invitation. NCL members Julie & Olivia Schreader, Sarah and Grace Greiner, Sally and Madeleine Bannon and guest NCLer Jack Bannon, all were great help with the tournament. Clipped Wings member Jan White volunteered to help with raffle and drink ticket sales. Marin Catholic volunteers Chandley McKinnon and Joey Morlock and Boy Scouts, Peter Shatara, Brendan Laing and Erik Rademacher staffed the event from start to finish. Our generous Court Sponsors for the day were: Budget Blinds, Pamela A. Brewer & Associates, Daniel Murphy of Morgan Stanley, Golden State Lumber, Inc, Reliance Electrical Services, Law Offices of Leland, Parachini, Steinberg, Matzger & Melnick, LLP, Frank Howard Allen, Farley Law Offices, Gear Up, San Francisco Shutter Company, George & Linda Vaio and Tim’s Treads. The days leading up to the big race were filled with cloudy skies and drizzle to downpour. But Saturday, May 7 dawned as picture perfect Marin in May! And dawn it was as our booth crew arrived! Our booth was fabulous! Lynn Holbrook assembled a six foot tall anniversary candle to celebrate our 30th. At 6am volunteers Joyce Thornton and Jane & Mike Scurich were on hand to assist Lynn and her son, CACS day program member Jonathan, assemble the candle and anchor it in the wind. Our table of mini anniversary cupcakes to be dressed with personal frosting options was very popular. Throughout the race, the booth was staffed with energetic volunteers, sharing the CACS spirit with all visitors. Thank you to Clipped Wings members Carolyn Mueller, Susan Fordyce and Joyce Thornton for helping board members Jacki Anderson, Gretchen McMenimen and Anne Newman staff our booth. Thanks to the National Charity League (NCL) folks who supported our clients through the race course, staffed our booth and set such a warm and friendly tone to the picnic; helping, serving, cleaning, and befriending – we are so fortunate to have their support! NCL volunteers: Carly and Tracy Schlocker, Katie and Margie Rogers, Laura and Lauren Mogannam, Claire and Cyndy Poulos, Pam and Sandra Joyce, Natalie and Colette Urroz, Kathy and Kim Gallagher, Jana and Jillian Corey , Jan and Megan Bishop, Cindy Galloway, Katie Fisher, Lisa and Illana Rabin, Natalie Urroz, Emily Wondelleck, Rusty and Delta Williams, Joan and Soroya Gray, Marissa and Anna Boucher, Kimberely Killian and coordinator Nancy Masters. Thank you also to the Marin Catholic volunteers: Len Biss, Stephen Simon and Peter Thalman for supporting our clients. Thank you to Janice Waunigatunga, a special friend to CACS, who collected money on our behalf and supported Lisa Jay in the race. And a very special thank you to Alison Falvey who shopped, cooked, planned and facilitated the fabulous end of the race picnic for all our clients, staff, friends, family and volunteers. Everyone looked fabulous in the 30 year anniversary tee shirts sponsored by: Golden State Lumber, Dan Murphy/ Morgan Stanley, Leland Parachini, Pamela Brewer & Associates, Reliance Electric and Budget Blinds. Patti Anderson of Gear Up donated much of her time and expertise to insure our tee shirts were “just right.” Marshall Arts did a great job printing our shirts and waived some charges for us as Human Race participants. Michael Birch, supported by Robert Cardenas and Cathy Adams supported by NCL member, Lisa and Illana Rabin, both received $100 awards for their wheelchair race. Thank you to our donors, our participants and our fabulous volunteers for yet another great Human Race! August 2005 T he parent meeting on March 10 included a presentation by Brent Kato.
