Introduction
Welcome to the NACS 2010 Auction
Welcome to the North American
Clivia Society’s public online
auction! We encourage all to
register, view the catalog, and bid.
In the online catalog you will find a
variety of Clivia related auction
items.
All of the items in this year’s auction
have been donated by NACS
members. The proceeds from the
auction will go to support the
NACS’s sponsorship of the 2011
International Clivia Show and
Symposium at Longwood Gardens
scheduled for March 19 and 20,
2011. This is an important project worthy of the support of all Clivia collectors.
The auction for all items will be open Saturday, October 16, 2010 12:15 am PDT and close Sunday,
October 24, 2010 6:00 pm PDT.
Thank you donors.
Some Important Details:
Seeds/Seedlings. The NACS and its donors have taken reasonable precautions to insure seeds and
plants which have not yet bloomed are genetically as advertised. However, bidders should remember
that stray pollen can enter in any natural process. No genetic guarantee can be provided in these cases.
Currency. All bids shall be made in United Stated dollars.
Membership. Non-NACS members can bid. Membership is not required to be a successful bidder.
Payment: We will accept payment via check, money order, or PayPal account:
[email protected]. You will receive an invoice if you are the successful bidder via
email.
Shipping. Each item lists a fixed, domestic, bare root, USPS Priority Mail shipping and handling charge
which will be added to the successful bid. International shipping, phytosanitary certificates, or
expedited shipping is available for an extra/actual cost.
Thank You
Thank you in advance for your support in making this year's auction a brilliant success!

Auction Items
001 Yellow/Green Throat Seedling
This item is a selfed Clivia miniata
seedling of a soft pastel orange with
a yellow and green throat. The
seedling has four leaves, with one
damaged. On the parent plant the
green lasted all the way through the
bloom’s life, but did lighten. The
parent was purchased at the 2009
NACS Show and was from Rancho.
The parent’s most recent flowering
had 18 perfect shaped, beautiful
blossoms. Photos are of the seedling
(Photo 1) and parent (Photo 2). The
auction item is the seedling only.
Shipping: A $5 fixed shipping and
handling fee for domestic, bare root,
USPS Priority Mail will be added to
the successful bid. International
shipping, phytosanitary certificates,
or expedited shipping is available at
an extra/actual cost.

002 (Delphine x Doris) x Belgium Green Throat Seedling
This Clivia miniata seedling (Photo 1)
is a cross of two great parents. The
pod parent originally raised by Kevin
Atkins is a cross of Conway’s Jean
Delphine with Doris. Jean Delphine
is described by Koopowitz in Clivias
as “…among the most distinctive of
the Conway clivias with unusually
rich, dark, brownish orange-red
flowers.” Doris is described as “…a
nice, dark, orange-red from Conway.
Doris is another clone that darkens
as the flower matures.” The pollen
parent was a Dirk Lotten Belgium
with a green throat as shown in the
flower picture (Photo 2). This
auction item is for the seedling only.

004 Full Umbel Seedling
This item is a two leaf Clivia miniata
seedling (Photo 1) with both parents
having a nice shaped full umbel. The
pod parent is a Comstock’s light
yellow shown in the second photo.
The umbel has 22 blossoms. The
pollen parent is a #4 Red with 35
blossoms, as shown in the orangered photo (Photo 3).

005 Five Lily Wang Chinese Seedlings
This item is one lot of five
Lily Wang Chinese seedlings.
They are from a mixed batch
but appear at this stage of
growth to be dwarf. There is
some minor leaf damage on
a few leaves, but the plants
are otherwise healthy. The
bases are slightly pigmented,
so the flowers will probably
be some shade of orange.
However, given the wide
variety in Chinese seedlings
there may be something
special in the batch.
Shipping: A $5 fixed
shipping and handling fee for domestic, bare root, USPS Priority Mail will be added to the successful bid.
International shipping, phytosanitary certificates, or expedited shipping is available at an extra/actual
cost.

006 TK Yellow with Green Throat
Offset
This auction item is a 6 leaf offset from the
donor’s TK Yellow with Green Throat, originally
bred by Toshio Koike. Photo 1 is the actual plant.
The longest leaf of the offset is 14 inches. Photo
2 is the offset’s mother and a Hirao for color
comparison. The mother is a seed strain and is
one of the nicest examples many have seen, as
shown in Photo 2. TK Yellow is a Group 2 Yellow.
The auction item does not include the plants in

Shipping: A $5 fixed shipping and handling fee
for domestic, bare root, USPS Priority Mail will be
ded to the successful bid. International shipping,

008 1828 Nobilis Hand Colored Engraving
This item is an original 1828 hand colored engraving of a Clivia
nobilis. The engraving is from Volume 8 of the Botanical
Register, consisting of “Exotic plants cultivated in British
Gardens with the history and mode of treatment.” The
engraving’s artist is Sydenham Edward. The Botanical Register
was printed between 1820 and 1828 by James Ridgway.
Included with the engraving in this auction item are the three
pages of text that accompanied it. The print is folded as it was
in the book. It has some discolorations as can be seen in the
photos. The paper has a browner color to it than shown in the
photos. If mounted and framed this item would be a very
elegant addition to any Clivia collector’s home or office. The
engraving is a lovely piece of Clivia history.
Shipping: A $5 fixed shipping and handling fee for domestic
USPS Priority Mail will be added to the successful bid.
International shipping or expedited shipping is available at an
extra/actual cost.

010 Conway’s Sunrise Sunset
This auction item is an almost blooming sized,
Sunrise Sunset variety of Clivia miniata, first bred by
Dave Conway. The plant has 12 leaves with two
more on the way. The longest leaf is approximately
16 inches long. Photo 1 shows the actual plant up
for auction. Photo 2 shows a typical Sunrise Sunset
bloom. Sunrise Sunset is a great addition to any
Clivia collection. In Clivias, Harold Koopowitz says
the following: “When the flowers open they are
almost all yellow with just a hint of peach. As they
mature, they acquire a deep flush of peach. If a
plant has two or more umbels of different ages they
can look like different clones; thus the name Sunrise
Sunset.”

011 Chinese Variegated Clivia Miniata
The original mother Chinese
Variegated Clivia miniata
came to the donors
approximately 10 years ago
and was labeled as Jensi.
Each offset that has
developed from the original
mother plant carries a
different variegated leaf
pattern. The two offsets each
from the mother plant
maintained in the donor’s
possession are totally
different in leaf pattern. The
auction item plant, an offset
of the just described mother,
is quite an interesting
variegated Clivia and may be a Chimera. The flowers are orange. The auction item plant is shown in the
photo.
Shipping: A $10 fixed shipping and handling fee for domestic, bare root, USPS Priority Mail will be
added to the successful bid. International shipping, phytosanitary certificates, or expedited shipping is
available at an extra/actual cost. This plant will be shipped from Montana. Depending on weather
conditions and the timing of payments, etc., shipping may need to be delayed until warmer weather in
the spring.

almost blooming sized cross
of two well known red Clivia
miniatas, Flame x Doris.
Photo 1 is a recent photo of
the auction item. Both
parents are described and
shown in photographs in
Koopowitz’s “Clivias”. Some
excerpts:
“Flame: …This is a large
plant that is quite
vigorous, and as the
name suggests, it is
among the redder
flowers available. It is a
re-bloomer, and a large
clump often throws additional umbels during the summer and fall. The umbel carries about twentyfive flowers in a 9-inch diameter umbel….This plant is much in demand as a breeding plant but is
partially self-sterile.“
“Doris: This is a nice, dark, orange-red from Conway. ‘Doris’ is another clone that darkens as the
flower matures….The umbel is made up of a nice, tight cluster of about twenty flowers. It is among
the better reds available and is recommended for those who are serious about breeding for dark
colors.”

103 Comstock’s Noble Inventions – 2 seeds
Two seeds are offered from
"Noble Inventions", the
winner of Best of Show for
Non-Flowering Plants in 2010
of the NACS Show at the
Huntington Botanical
Gardens in California. It is an
interspecific cross done with
a C. miniata akebono from
Japan crossed with a C.
nobilis. This cross was done
in 1998. Although slow at
first, this plant now is
growing quite vigorously. The
donor particularly likes the C.
nobilis influence which has given the leaves a heavy substance which holds the variegation well with no
burning. And from nobilis, the matte texture displays the variegation well with no competing glare that a
glossy leaf would give. The seeds are self pollinated. The photo is from the parent.

104 Yellow Flowered Interspecific
This auction item is a yellow
flowered interspecific which
is an offspring of “Juliette”.
“Juliette” is described in
Koopowitz’s book “Clivias”
as:
Clivia [Minicyrt Group]
’Juliette’
Perhaps the most
intriguing of Comstock’s
clivias from Minicyrt
breedings is the
advanced hybrid, which
is several generation from the species. This
cultivar illustrates the wonderful color patterns
that can be produced. The slightly curved
flowers are a rich orange-red with the sepals
only slightly darker than the petals. Most of the
flower’s throat is a similar color, but the flaring
edges of the petals are highlighted and brushed
with pale pink tones that make the rim of the
flower seem to glow.
A picture of “Juliette” appears on page 314 of
“Clivias”.
This auction item interspecific is a delicately shaped,
slender flower that stands fairly erect. Photo 1 was
taken a few days past the flowers’ prime where it
suffered through a sudden heat wave. This is the
plant’s second flowering. The plant is eight years old
so appears to have a small stature, a desirable trait
in interspecifics. This auction item should be good
for more breeding of delicately shaped, yellow
interspecifics.

105 Ruby Division
This auction item is a division from “Ruby”, a very
good red C. miniata. The color is exceptional and
really stands out with sunlight backlighting it. Each
floret is not particularly large, but the umbel is nicely
arranged and has a high floret count. A unique
quality of the florets is a slight pucker in the middle
of each tepal. The plant is large and robust. It is
believed that red anthocyanin pigments are best
developed with UV light frequencies as are contained
in normal sunlight. These UV frequencies are filtered
out by some greenhouse coverings. So if you want to
get the best red color, the donor recommends
blooming “Ruby” in a shady outdoor setting.

106 Large Brown-Eyed Girl Division
A very large division of
"Brown-Eyed Girl"
developed by Doug
McGavin. It's one of the
original, named bronzes in
California in the class of
Conway's "Jean Delphine".
Harold Koopowitz describes
"Brown-Eyed Girl" on page
213, 217 of his book "Clivias"
although the donor thinks
the plant blooms much
better than his description.
The reddish-orange florets
have a green throat with the
green extending into the
red-orange tips, combining
to give the characteristic
"bronze" color. And because older florets turn a
pronounced red color, there are many colors
happening in this umbel. The bronze color is
frequently passed to its offspring.
This particular division is very large and possesses
both a flower stalk with red berries ready to harvest
from 4/09, plus a flower stalk with berries formed
during the past flowering in 4/10. All were self
pollinated.
A note from the donor: “I always wondered why
Doug called this plant ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’ when I
would have thought ‘Green-Eyed Girl’ would be
better considering its green center. Last year, I
learned Doug was color-blind in the red/green range.
I didn't say anything more.”
