President’s Message
By: Doris Brownlie
I hope you are all becoming excited about visiting
the beautiful city of Calgary next May. Our members there are busy preparing an entertaining
schedule for us to enjoy beginning with a trip on
Tuesday, May 10th and ending with an Awards
dinner on Saturday, May 14 th.
During the Fall conventions I have had the opportunity to meet and
sign up many new members from that friendly country to the
South. I sincerely hope that many will obtain their passports and
attend a Canadian convention.
As soon as you receive this magazine there are several things that
you can do.
• Register by using the middle pages of this magazine. You can
pull them out and fill them in, or just make a photocopy directly
from the magazine and use that.
• Don’t forget to apply for the judging school, and to make, and
have your affiliate make a donation for Show awards.
• If donating other than on the form please note that Jim Toms
has resigned from this position, so please send cheques made
out to African Violet Society of Canada Awards to Norma
Kunzel, who is now our new Awards Chair.
• Reserve your room at the hotel.
• Reserve your transportation if you need it.
• Look through the show schedule and start to prepare some
plants to enter. Reserve your Design classes early to avoid disappointment.
• Apply to judge or clerk.
• Look forward all Winter to meeting with old friends with this
common addiction and to making new ones.
Please take care of each other and of your beautiful African violets. Happy growing!

Editor’s Notes
By: Sayeh Beheshti
[email protected]
I hope that you have had a wonderful start to
2016 and that it promises to be a fantastic year
for you and your family.
As I write these words mid-January, I have to
admit that this is not the issue I had planned. I
had envisioned an issue equally divided between the 2016 Convention and African violet propagation. Well…… it turns out that
the members of the Stampede City African Violet Society had other plans and they filled this issue with all the information you need
for the wonderful convention they have planned for you.
I cannot apologize for the tardiness of this issue since it was completely out of my control. What I do know is that in order to participate in the wonderful upcoming convention, you must now spring
into action to not only register for the convention, but also the hotel, judging school as well as the tours and programmes.
It was just two years ago that my own club, Toronto AVS, was
busy preparing for the 2014 convention. Now that the pressure is
off, I will use this opportunity to give you some information about
what to expect and how you can make your own participation
more rewarding.
Be sure to register for the convention as soon as possible. Knowing how many people to expect is critical in planning everything
from presentation room layouts to renting a bus for the tours.
The contract that the host club has written with the hotel is usually
contingent on meeting a certain number of meals, so signing up
for those is critical in defraying costs. In our own convention, we
ended up paying a penalty since we did not have enough people
4
Chatter
January - March 2016
signing up for meals. I must also add that the meals are also some
of the best moments of the convention, since it gives you a chance
to see everyone, and nothing brings people together like sharing a
meal. The menu looks amazing, so it’s truly a win-win situation.
I also do hope that you consider donating awards money, auction
items or gifts for the goodie bags. Consider it a belated gift exchange with a hundred of your violet buddies!
One last thought is that I hope you also take the challenge of taking at least one show plant with you. Traveling with plants can be
daunting, but seeing them in the show is very rewarding and
makes the effort all so worthwhile.
The next issue of Chatter will go back to the regular format with the
promised theme of propagation. Thanks to the amazing contributors I have the privilege of working with, all the content is ready,
but now I can add even more.
I have used the inner cover pages to include pictures of the 2012
and 2014 AVSC conventions and remind you of the wonderful
times to be had by all at an AVSC convention.
So, sit back, grab a coffee and begin dreaming of the warm days
you will spend with your friends in Calgary, surrounded by beautiful
violets. Let the planning begin!

Do you feel frustrated in growing
these plants well? Do you feel like
throwing out your pot of long scraggly rhizomatous gesneriads with
only a few flowers at the tips? What
do I do with the pot now that the top
growth has died back? And do I really have to TOUCH those wormylooking rhizomes???
Growing the rhizomatous Gesneriad genera successfully can be a
challenge for both new and experienced growers alike! In this
presentation/ workshop, Bill will discuss all aspects of growing these interesting gesneriads from initial starting and propagating to the cultural requirements of the various genera as well as
tips for producing beautiful show specimens.
You will learn to be more comfortable in handling these “worms”
and hopefully will be motivated to grow even more varieties.
Please bring your questions and problem experiences as well.

seasoned panel of growers, who represent a vast range of
knowledge and wisdom in the horticultural realm.
This will be an exciting time of
open sharing, and even if you
don’t have a question of your
own, you can always learn
from others, who may ask a
question that might just be
something you had been
thinking about for a long time.

(after the judging is completed).
6. Plants may be purchased any time for Design Division exhibits, but must be disease and insect free.

by April 30, 2016 in order to facilitate anyone on the waiting list.
10.All design entries will be checked by the Classification Committee (or passing judge) to ensure that they
conform to the schedule.
11.Design set-up starts Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 1:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Cut blossoms may be added to designs on the day of the judging. Exhibitors and materials must be out of the show area by 8:30 am

What Being a Show Chair is All About
By: Julie Thompson
Foxboro, ON
Based on contributing material by Beverley Williams
Beverley Williams has written a Show
Chairman Manual and that material has
been incorporated throughout this article.
Bev, as well as Doris Brownlie, has been
the Show Chair several times and was a
great resource for me when I took it on last
year to help keep me on track. The following is written based on the show happening
at the end of March or beginning of April.
Being the Show Chair is a big responsibility
that can be daunting, very interesting, and somewhat exciting all
at the same time. Yes, I did say exciting, but it’s still true. I took on
the role of Show Chair for the first time last year. I was Show
Chair for two shows that were taking place at the same time
alongside each other which was an even bigger task than just a
single show! It was bigger in the sense that many things were
done twice since there were two separate shows for which to prepare.
There are many things that need to be done in preparation for
your club’s show. The Show Chair is responsible for the entire
show overall and needs to be sure all things required are done.
This is by delegating a good portion of it to others to do. Your job
as Show Chair is to be sure all jobs needing to be done are completed. Keep a copy of anything you do together in a file.
Once you’ve said yes you’ll be the Show Chair the work begins.
The following is an outline and guide to what to do and when.

September - December
Organize committees to handle the various tasks to be done.
Some of these are, Awards Chair, entries person, classification,
publicity, show plant sales (if you have a sales area), Judges and
Clerks Chair, photography (if you choose), and placement. If any
of these require a budget get that set aside as soon as possible.
Check the club’s ribbons and rosettes supply and order any that
are needed. This includes any sponsored awards.
One of the first things to do is have a show theme chosen. This
should be done in September at the first meeting, or as soon as
possible.
Once you have the theme the schedule can be written. Usually
someone who has experience in the design classes is asked to
write the design schedule. Another individual is asked to write the
horticultural schedule. This should be someone who is familiar
with the classes and rules a show requires, and anything special
to your own show. Once both parts are written they need to be
given back to the Show Chair to be consolidated and proofread.
Once the schedule is completed, two copies need to be sent
to societies and clubs you are
affiliated with and will be including classes specific to them for
approval no later than two
months prior to the show date..
In my case, it was AVSA,
AVSC, and NYSAVS. Include a
letter with them asking for any
rosettes needed and include
the rosettes cost as well. Keep
a copy of the letter. I send this
by the end of December for a
show at the end of March. The
schedule needs to be approved
before being given out to anyone.

Write and send a notice of the
show to AVSA, AVSC, and The
Gesneriad Society to be listed
on their events page. Check the
publication deadlines.

January - February
As soon as the schedule has been approved, send it to your newsletter editor to distribute to the members along with the newsletter.
You want to get it out as soon as you can, especially for the designers so they can get started on it. Include an entry form along with
the schedule. Make sure the Judge’s Chairman has a copy of the
schedule as they need to give it to the judges who are judging the
show.
At the meetings keep members updated on the progress of the
show, and any changes that happen.
Check with the committee chairmen on their progress and solve
any problems that may come up.
Check that all the show supplies are available and purchase anything needing to be replenished. Such supplies can be paperclips to
pin on the ribbons, table cloths or coverings, class dividers for the
table etc.
Prepare the class cards for
the show from the finished,
and approved, schedule.
Print and keep them together.
Prepare the “Award Winner”
cards from the approved
schedule. Be sure to print two
sets, one for the judges to
work from and the other one
for the exhibitor; this one is
placed next to their exhibit.
The Show Chair writes the
exhibitor cards and places
them after judging and prior
to the show opening.

Prepare any advertising flyers to hand out with the
shows information.
Any show needs volunteers
to help on the set up day and
also when it’s open to the
public, to be security for the
show, help with the sales table, etc. Asking for volunteers
for the various areas needed

should be addressed over two meetings prior to the show. What I
do is write up a list of the areas needed, with it broken into time
frames, and pass the list around for people to sign up.

March
Give the newsletter editor any needed reminders about the show.
Be sure to write thank you cards to those who have helped put on
the show, in particular the different chairmen. I also write a thank
you article for the club’s newsletter.
Be at the show right at the beginning to oversee and handle anything that comes up. The Show Chair is usually the first one in the
show room and the last one out.
Once the show is over be sure to mail any show reports to AVSA,
AVSC, NYSAVS, and return any paperwork promptly.
The above is all necessary to be done but the timing is a template
as it can vary depending on when the show itself is being held.
Remember that the Show Chair has the total responsibility for the
preparation of the show, but the work can be shared. It’s a team
effort. I say that so you’ll know you can do it too.
