Hackney’s netball squad celebrate their improved performance in this year’s London Youth Games
HUNDREDS of young athletes
took centre stage at this
year’s London Youth Games
with Hackney putting in its
best performance ever.
The borough was represented
by more than 400 eager
competitors and came in the
top 20 for the first time, against
32 other London boroughs.
Hackney jumped seven
places to 16th overall, after
finishing 23rd last year, with
18 teams from the borough
finishing in the top 10 for
their individual events.
Hackney landed team medals
in the weightlifting, girls’
basketball, and adapted
rowing team events. Individual
medals were also won by 34
young athletes in disciplines
including disability athletics
and kayaking.

ACKNEY’S
parks are the
place to be
this summer if
you want to mark the
final countdown to the
London 2012 Games
in style.
On 27 July there will
be exactly one year to go
until the Olympic opening
ceremony. To mark the
milestone there will be
a Parks for Life event in
Haggerston Park on 24
July, featuring a traditional
H
sports day with egg and
spoon races, long jump
and time trials. Other
highlights include live
music, healthy eating stalls,
face-painting and a play
zone for young children.
Then Hackney One
Carnival returns on 7
August, along with a Parks
for Life festival in Clissold
Park. The carnival brings
together performers from
across the borough as part
of the Cultural Olympiad
to celebrate arts and
culture alongside sports in
the run up to the Games.
Now in its fourth year,
the carnival parade kicks
off at 12noon in Ridley
Road and works its way
north up the A10 to Stoke
Newington Church Street,
before arriving in Clissold
Park at 2pm. There will be
live music, dancing and fun
activities until 6pm.
Last year more than
8,000 people enjoyed the
event, which is organised
by the Council’s 2012
Unit alongside local
carnival groups. Mayor of
Hackney, Jules Pipe, said:
“With just one year to go
until the 2012 Games,
Hackney One Carnival is
a great way for residents
to come out and celebrate
our role as a host borough
and to get involved in a
community event.”
Parks for Life activities
run until September and
are aimed at helping
people get fit and healthy
outdoors. Cllr Jonathan

Care, and Culture, said:
“We want to encourage as
many people as possible to

Highly prized day
UNDREDS of
residents from the
Homerton area let
their hair down
at a recent fun day on
Frampton Park estate.
Organised by the
Management Executive
South Hackney (MESH)
who are the umbrella
organisation for all
the resident groups in
Homerton, the event, held
on 25 June, was filled
with lots of fun activities
for the family.
Children played on
large bouncy castles, and
were treated to sausage
rolls and refreshments,
and everyone had the
chance to enter prize draws
on the day.
The winner of a coveted
Nintendo Wii star prize
was John Williams from
Gascoyne 2 estate who
correctly guessed the
number of sweets in a jar.

Residents from the Homerton area enjoy themselves, and
scoop some prizes in the process at the fun day organised by MESH
Terry Edwards, Chair of
MESH, said: “What a great
day for Homerton residents.
People really enjoyed

from each school make it

new personal best scores
in long jump, triple jump,
javelin, shot put, discus
and running are crowned
champions.
But after several hours
of torrential rain during
this year’s final day on
7 July, it was decided the
event could not go ahead.
The final will be
rescheduled so that none
of the pupils miss out on
their chance to take part.
Because of the school
summer holidays however,
it is now likely to go ahead
in September.

events where they can get an on-the-spot check-up.
The Council’s Streetscene team, in partnership with the
police and London Cycling Campaign, will be holding
Cycle Pit Stop events on:

The finished International Broadcast Centre
Bring on the broadcasters
THE International Broadcast Centre (IBC) is now the fifth
London 2012 venue to be completed.
The IBC, along with the Main Press Centre, is in the
Hackney section of the Olympic Park, and will provide
24-hour support for journalists during the Games.
The 275m-long building will cater for over 20,000
broadcasters, photographers and print journalists –
bringing sporting action to an estimated four billion
people worldwide.
It has been designed to be as flexible as possible to
accommodate a range of potential tenants and uses after
the Games. It has been designated as employment space
with the potential to create thousands of new jobs locally.

included BBC talent scouts.
They performed an eclectic

the driving force
behind the colour
and excitement of the
2012 Paralympic Games
opening ceremony.
Jenny Sealey, Artistic
Director of groundbreaking, disabled-led
theatre company Graeae,
has been appointed Joint
Artistic Director of the
ceremony, along with
Bradley Hemmings,
Artistic Director of
Greenwich+Docklands
Festivals (GDiF).
The pair have a history
of staging shows together,
including work by deaf
and disabled artists.
Jenny has lived in
Hackney for 25 years and
worked at Graeae since
1998. She oversaw the
company’s move into a
state-of-the-art venue next
to the Geffrye Museum
in Kingsland Road in
2009 – the same year that

she received an MBE for
services to disability arts.
Jenny said: “Bradley
and I both love a good
story and create work with
a strong narrative. We
aim to bring together the
greatest deaf, disabled and
non-disabled performers to
create an aural and visual
feast that will never be
forgotten. I can’t wait to
get to work to make 2012
the greatest show ever.”
The appointment was
announced on 24 June
before a performance
at the GDiF of a Graeae
touring production, an
adaptation of Ted Hughes’
‘The Iron Man’, directed
by Jenny.
She is passionate about
finding new theatrical
voices, and Graeae shows
always fuse British Sign
Language and audio
description as an integral
part of the action.
Admitting that she can’t
imagine living anywhere
other than Hackney, she
added of the ceremony:
“The sheer diversity of this
wonderful borough means
diversity will be core to
our ethos as will equality,
quality and inclusion.”
The Paralympic opening
ceremony – set to take
place on 29 August 2012 –
traditionally starts with the
raising of the Paralympic
and host nation’s flags,
and includes an athletes’
parade and speeches. The
Games are then declared
open and oaths are taken
by representatives of
the athletes and judges.
Finally, the Paralympic
flame is used by the last
torchbearer to light the
cauldron.
Paralympic ticket
applications are open from
9 to 30 September 2011.

TEACHERS from Hackney schools were invited to BBC
Television Centre for a preview of the 2012 edition of the
BBC’s annual School Report.
The scheme has run for six years, encouraging young
people to file reports via their school websites to the BBC.
More than 800 schools contributed reports last year.
Several Hackney schools are already signed up for next
year, and Hackney Free pupils have produced a report
on their PE Teacher, Daniel Davies, who hopes to be
selected for the 2012 hurdling team.
Helen Shreeve, BBC School Report editor, said: “Hackney
young people are experts on what is happening during
2012. For example, one of the big events is the BBC
Radio 1 concert on Hackney Marshes; we want young
people to report on that.”
News day 2012 takes place on 15 March, but the
BBC wants students to report throughout the year.

Cafe contract
A FIVE-YEAR contract to run the Clissold House cafe and
Pump House kiosk in Clissold Park has been awarded.
The Council announced on 8 July that the
contract would go to Company of
Cooks, which already manages
cafes at Kenwood House,
Hyde and Greenwich
parks, and the Imperial
War Museum among
others.
Cllr Jonathan McShane,
Cabinet Member for
Health, Social Care and
Culture, said: “Clissold Park
and House are nearing the end of
a £8.9 million transformation and the
catering is an integral part of this.”
It is hoped the kiosk will be open by mid-September and
the restored house and cafe later in the autumn.

row. This is my last London Youth Games so we were very
keen on taking the trophy back – which we did! I would
recommend weightlifting because it’s a very dynamic and
unique sport. And it keeps you fit, toned and strong.”

weekend at Crystal Palace
National Sports Centre on
2 and 3 July.
The borough jumped

finished in the top 10, with
36 in the top 20.

Hackney is one of the most diverse places in

Not upsetting
the apple cart
F
OR Tom Baker,
founder of the
Field Day and
Underage festivals,
it’s almost impossible to
pick his ideal headliners.
“Radiohead would be the
obvious one, Kraftwerk,
Burial, and a Bob Dylan
acoustic set,” says the Stoke
Newington resident after a
long, deliberating pause.
Adding: “If I can have
dead people too, then it’ll
be Jimi Hendrix, Miles
Davis and Ali Farka
Touré. That would make a
fantastically eclectic set.”
Tom has been putting
on music events around
the borough and beyond
for over a decade – with
the first festival being at
Hackney City Farm in
2001. He says: “It has all
been very organic, there
was no real game plan to
make money. We started
out as very hand to mouth,
then gradually built into
something.”
His firm Eat Your
Own Ears, based in
Shacklewell Studios, E8,
showcases musicians from
independent record labels
like Domino and Rough
Trade, and cherry picks
some of the best new acts
to perform locally and
around the country.
His club and gig nights
are solely devoted to cutting
edge music, while successful
festivals like Field Day
add countryside charm –
influenced by his Somerset
background. Think electric
guitars and dub-step
alongside hay bales and
country dancing.
Tom says: “I wouldn’t
put on bands just to sell
tickets, they are always
bands I really like. I’d put
on The Temper Trap or
Florence and the Machine
with some quirky folk
act from Fife and a weird
art project to embrace
everything. Some events
make money, some lose
money, some break even,
it’s just about getting the
balance right.”
Which might go some
way towards explaining
Field Day’s development.
Now a treasure trove for
discovering some of the best
bands across the musical
spectrum, the festival’s
early years were dogged by
teething problems, bad luck
and worse weather.
Tom explains: “Field Day
has been a steep learning
curve, but the more events
you put on, the more you
improve. Last year was
amazing weather, but
we can’t control that.
Everything went really
smoothly. It’s exciting to
build an event and make
it better.”

boasts Janelle Monae
and CocknBullKid,
continues to be a big hit
with young people.
Tom says: “It’s
difficult to pick what I’m
looking forward to the
most because each day
is different. Underage
always has an amazing
atmosphere, Field Day has
an incredible line-up, and
I’m interested to see how
comedy and magic works
at The Apple Cart.”
Tom has lived in the
borough with his partner
for the past 10 years. And
being a local promoter, gig
venue Café Oto, as well
as new music venues like
Shacklewell Arms and
Vortex Jazz Bar, are always
on his radar, if not working
directly with owners.
He says: “I love it here,
and I don’t know where
else I’d live. There’s
just a really great sense
of community around
Hackney that’s quite
special; great restaurants,
new cafes, pop-up events
and exciting things
happening everywhere.”

nutrients in polluted water.

checking to see if their
home has misconnected
pipes that flow directly into

Local park wins £45k funds
A SMALL park in
Stoke Newington has
received over £45,000 in
development funding to
plan restoration work.
The two-and-a-half acre
West Hackney Recreation
Ground on Manse Road,
N16, incorporates St
Paul’s Churchyard and
Old Burial Ground. It is
hoped that, when work

Hackney estates have been
putting their green fingers
to work transforming
derelict sites into bountiful
gardens.
An empty site at
Amhurst Park estate,
N16, was transformed
last year and another
garden at Samuel Lewis
Trust, on Amhurst
Road, E8, was officially
launched in June.
Vacant Lot is a
three-year Lottery
funded project, run in
conjunction with London
housing associations,
and aimed at converting
unused areas into
communal food growing
plots for residents.

Climate Energy is a
specialist organisation that
runs a helpline, manned
by trained advisers who
can discuss energy
saving ideas with callers.
They can also give advice on the energy-saving grants
currently available to leaseholders and freeholders, as
well as how to prevent costly fuel bills.
Advisers are available Mon to Fri, from 9am to 7pm, and
on Sat, from 9am to 12pm. They can offer advice in a
number of languages and communicate with people who
are hard of hearing using a text-to-voice and voice-totext relay service.
Climate Energy staff will also be on hand to offer face-toface advice at Hackney Homes’ community events this
summer, as well as supporting Hackney Homes’ staff to
give energy advice to their residents and tenants, and
offer home visits for specialist advice on how to reduce
energy bills.

Shoreditch’s Village Underground.
The group hailing from Colombia found
success for their exuberant pan-tropical
compositions and traditional South American
folk pounded into dance music beats.
While their name, ‘Stereo Bomb’ in
English, fits in with the high-energy live
performances and at times bonkers music,
their firm grasp of melody usually keeps
them away from riotous cacophony.

Hackney school gets a respray

celebrating diversity

painted at Downsview
special school.
Sixth formers from
Clapton Girls’ Technology
College put the finishing
touches to their ‘We
are Hackney’ mural,
concluding a nine-month
business project to promote
the borough.
The students are part
of the charity Envision’s
schools programme which
supports young people to
design and deliver their
own social action projects
over the course of a year.
Calling themselves Tick
4 Change, the team won
£500 funding and raised
a further £500 to see their
project come to fruition.
They then recruited artists
from Soulful Gallery,
which specializes in graffiti
art, who helped them
design and install the mural
at the Hackney Downs
school. It features images of
local landmarks including
parks and the Rio Cinema
in Dalston.
Rashida Khanom,16,
said:“We wanted our
project to do something
for the community and
give something back.
We wanted to show that
young people care. It’s been
HACKNEY Community College (HCC) presented its latest
crop of student work at its end of year celebratory show,
HCC Summerfest.
Over 700 people attended the on-site fair of art, music,
fashion, sport, technology workshops
and award ceremonies on 6 July.
Among the activities on
offer, visitors could try
out new skills including
preparing canapés,
building brick walls
and breaking down car
engines; the college’s
championship winning
basketball team (left)
presented an exhibition
match; while prizes were
given to high achieving
students and staff; and a fashion
show (below) featured the work of
students, some of whom have been offered places at top
institutions including the London College of Fashion.
There was also the chance to find out about local services
and organisations and learn about London 2012 jobs from
Games organisers.
During the evening, HCC alumni – including awardwinning vibraphonist Orphy Robinson and saxophonist Ray
Carless – gave performances.

THE architects behind the new Lauriston Primary School
scooped three honours at the British Council for School
Environments awards.
Designed by Meadowcroft Griffin Architects, the E9
school won the Best of British Primary School Award for
excellence in design for teaching and learning; was named
joint winner for the Best of British Healthy Schools Award
for excellence in the provision of dining and outdoor play
facilities; and was commended as the Best of British Green
School Award for sustainable school of the year.
An £8.2million project to rebuild Lauriston, jointly funded
by Hackney Council and the Government, was completed
in 2010. New features include improved ventilation
and use of natural light, an all-weather area the size
of a sports hall and a façade designed by Turner Prize
nominee Liam Gillick. Lauriston was the first primary to
be rebuilt in the borough for 30 years.

Dare to be different

FASHION can be a
powerful form of identity.
But do people judge us by
the way we dress?
As you walk down the
streets of London you
might be taken aback by
the way some people dress
these days. It is human
nature for us to judge each
other on the way we dress.
Everyone has a different
reason for the way they
choose their ‘get-up’, it
might be for personal
comfort or it might be to
fit in with our mates.
Whatever the reason,
it is to do with our
individuality. Some of the
YH World team took to
the streets to find out if
we judge each other on
the way we dress.
Michelle, Gabriel
and Akeine learnt that
everybody they asked
agreed that you judge
and get judged on your
clothes when you walk
down the streets of
London. It’s a way to
express yourself and a
way to show off your
original or eccentric
persona. The number
of styles in this day
and age is unknown
and you won’t be
able to put a name
on half of them.
This is a question
we all should
consider. We
are all different – if we
weren’t the world would
be pretty boring. Do you
dare to be different?
FORMER world champion boxer Richie Woodhall (below) has
hosted a coaching clinic in Hackney.
The retired super-middleweight
also spoke to young people
at the Lion Club in Pitfield
Street, N1, about his
experiences, and
the challenges he
has faced. He said:
“The message of
my presentation is
that you have to show
dedication, determination,
perseverance and selfbelief. The theme of the talk
was boxing but the principles can
be applied to any area of life or work. The group were very
engaged and I look forward to hearing about their progress in
the future.”
The event was organised through The Social Change
Network and Fight4Change, a charity set up by Richie.
Fight4Change uses boxing and fitness activities to engage
young people and further develop them around the
education, employment and training agenda.
The Social Change Network is a London-wide initiative that
uses sport to encourage social change. Its work in Hackney
will initially focus on the Queensbridge area.

welcome to join in, even if
they can only come for one
session. The idea is that after
funding runs out, people
will have the confidence to
come back and maintain
the garden with minimal
support, and use it to meet
up with friends they have
met through the project.”
The group meets twice
a week, on Monday
afternoons and Thursday
mornings.

Your views on care charges
RESIDENTS who receive community care services from the
Council are being asked for their views on plans to change
how much they pay towards their care.
The Fairer Charging Policy consultation is aimed at people
who use services, including people who receive help at
home with preparing food or with washing; people who
attend day care centres; and those in receipt of personal
budgets. Carers, service providers, Council staff, partners
and residents are also being consulted.
The policy follows national guidance on how local
authorities should charge for non-residential care services
and how that is calculated by taking into consideration
service users’ disposable income and benefits.
Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social
Care and Culture, said: “The Council currently has one of
the lowest charging policies in London for its community
care services, but we have not reviewed our charging
policy since 2002. Our main aim is to protect those who
are unable to pay for their care and ensure that those who
can contribute towards the cost of their care do so.”
The consultation runs until 10 October. Service users
should receive information packs directly. Information
is available in a variety of formats including versions in
easy read, Braille and large print. For more details call:

promote the hospice’s
services in the borough, and
provide patient support.
So far, the Lower
Clapton resident has spent
three months befriending
patients at St Joseph’s, as
well as volunteering in the
administration department.

has completely changed my
perspective on life, talking
to people who have lived
long, full lives. When I go
home I feel like I have really
achieved something, even
if it has just been sitting
silently providing someone
with some company.”

community. They bring
knowledge, skills and
passion to their role.”

OLDER residents heard about preventative measures to
help avoid falls and improve their quality of life at Hackney
Stop Falls Network’s latest event on 29 June.
The aim was to raise awareness of the links between
eye-sight and falls by offering workshops on sensory
awareness and how to create a safer home environment.
Anstey Bligh, network co-ordinator, pointed to Age
UK research suggesting that, although many factors
contribute to falls, vision is among the most important.
She said: “Not only does reduced vision cause obvious
difficulties in spotting hazards or uneven ground, it can
affect balance, co-ordination and mobility, which can
increase the risk of falling and accelerate a reduction in
muscle strength.”
Hackney Stop Falls Network connects residents to local
services that can help them reduce the chances of
having a bad fall. The event formed part of National Falls
Awareness Week, from 20 to 24 June.

Death beds

F you want to buy
watercress in Morning
Lane these days, you
might well end up in the
local Tesco supermarket.
But over a century ago,
you would have been able
to pick your own on the
same site. The area’s fertile
soils made it an ideal place
for market gardeners to
supply the City with fresh
fruit and vegetables, and this
combined with a plentiful
supply of water also made
it a good location for
watercress beds.
John Roque’s 1745
map of Hackney shows
how rural the area was at
that time, with Hackney
Brook flowing freely above
ground amongst orchards
and pastures. There were
watercress beds at Pond
Lane (now Millfields
Road), but the most
extensive lay between
the north side of
Morning Lane and
Hackney Brook.
Watercress
production is
thought to have
taken place in
the area since
medieval times,
but in the 19th
century things began to
change. The coming of the
I
railways in the 1840s and
the culverting of the floodprone Hackney Brook were
setbacks to production, but
the industry still continued.
In his 1874 book ‘The
Wilds of London’, James
Greenwood includes a
description of a Hackney
watercress seller he met one
cold November morning.
‘That bent-backed old
fellow whom we now see
looming in the evening
twilight (and sober and
punctual man that he is, he
invitably is seen looming
at this time), is not a
picturesque object, and
his shrill harsh voice as he
shrieks “Wa-ter kree-eses”
is decidedly owlish … He is
76 next birthday, and has
been a soldier.’
When Greenwood asked
why the old man didn’t buy
his cress at the market,
he was told that it was
cheaper to get it
fresh, making as
much as three or
fourpence
difference
to a day’s
takings.
Over the
next 20
years however, the
Morning Lane beds were
decimated. It was now more
profitable to build
on land than
to farm it,
and by the
1890s many
beds were
lost under
new houses in
Chalgrove Road.
The death-knell
for what remained of the
Hackney watercress beds
came in 1903, when there
were two major outbreaks
of typhoid. Of 110 cases, 35
resulted in death. The report
of the Borough’s Medical
Officer for Health, J. King
Warry, on the progress of
the epidemic and his work
to identify the source makes
fascinating reading.
Discounting milk, ice
cream, fried fish, shellfish,
and defects in drainage as
possible culprits, Warry
pinpointed a high incidence
of watercress eaters among
the victims. He traced the
cress as having come from
beds on the
border of
Hackney
and West
Ham which
were irrigated
by the River
Lea, ‘so that
practically the
West Ham beds
are fed by almost
undiluted sewage’.
The local watercress
industry never recovered,
and the remaining beds
were eventually turned into
building plots.
Chalgrove Road was
badly bombed during
the Second World War
and housing demolished
in the 1980s. A 1997
archaeological evaluation
prior to the site being
redeveloped into a
supermarket located the
last traces of the beds and
the marshy ground in
which watercress once
grew so well.
