DESCANTS & CADENCES
The Art of Stephanie Law Signed
Signed! Recommended. A
new artist to us but one with superlative fantasy work and fine,
fine technical skills. From fairies
and beautiful fantasy women,
to--really--the most amazing
illustrations of insects such as
bees and dragonflies we have
seen. We can only compare this
side of her work to the great E.J.
Detmold, who could actually
romanticize insects with his
high level of skill at water color and capturing the exact
moment of dynamics. Law does this also, along with
excellent design and creativity. Shadowscapes, 2016.

Our Highest Recommendation. By
Thomas Negovan. By 1899, Alphonse
Mucha had experienced four years as
the most recognizable proponent of Art
Nouveau graphics and the most celebrated illustrator in Paris. The massive
output in the advertising and decorative
work earned much for Mucha’s publisher but very little for the artist himself.
So Mucha insisted upon the release
of a deeply personal work, and printed
510 copies of what he considered his
works-on-paper masterpiece, Le Pater--a female deity protecting
humankind, and a number of sophisticated occult themes.

News & Notes
This is our Christmas catalog. We’ve added eight extra pages, and on page 26
you’ll find a list of 95 of our very favorite items. These are already popular titles,
and the ones I’m proudest to be carrying; books I have given to my kids, my grandkids, my uncle, and friends; books I always recommend at shows and in my local
bookstore. This, to me, makes them perfect gift recommendations for the holidays!
Kinuko Craft went far beyond what we asked for with her bookplate for Beauty
and the Beast. We expected an unused preliminary drawing, something minor and
already done. Instead, she painted an entirely new image and she designed it specifically as a bookplate. Thank you Kinuko! It’s free, with a lovely, very gift-worthy
book that sells for just $17.99 (see above and on our cover)!
I’m closing out a few of the Collector Supplies that have proved to be very slow
sellers. See them with the other supplies on page 17. You can also find our most
recent Summer Clearance Sale on either our website home page, or on my blog,
or just look at Closeouts under each category on our home page for ALL of salepriced closeouts.
Anne and I will be doing antiquarian book shows in Pasadena Oct 1-2, Seattle
October 8-9, Houston Oct 23rd, and Boston Oct 28-30. I’m exhibit again at OAFCon (Oklahoma City), also on Oct 23-24. Links are in my Sept. 9th email, which
you can find in my online blog (Come by and say hello): budplant.blogspot.com.
There’s many wonderful items in this catalog, including new sketchbooks from San
Diego Comic-Con, some wonderful new art books (Sensuous Frazetta, Fortunino
Matania, Thomas Buchanan, Patrick J. Jones, to mention only a few). Good
hunting!
A very happy holiday season wish to you and yours from all of us here. Thank you
very sincerely for your support this year. We’ll continue to do our very best to find
the finest in comics, art and Illustration for you. ~Bud

Signed! Introduction by
W. Michael Kaluta! Highly
Recommended. This new
work deserves your attention.
Don’t just take my word for
it, here’s Michael Kaluta from
his introduction: “If one’s
first encounter were put into
words, perhaps we’d quote...
Doctor Who...‘Oh! Aren’t you a
beauty.’ There is a magic effect to THB’s portraiture...THB
applies his knowledge, his insights, and his ability to present worlds unseen to everything he creates.” PAJ, 2015.

HERE THERE BE DRAGONS
Highly Recommended. By Roger
Zelazny. Art by Vaughn Bodé. Roger
Zelazny’s only two children’s books in
affordable new hardcover editions. In a
tiny, isolated kingdom long ago and far
away, everyone believed that the world
beyond was infested with fearsome,
fire-breathing dragons and no one dared
venture forth. No one, that is, except
William. First published in a limited
edition in 1992. Grant, 2016.

Highly Recommended. By Roger
Zelazny. Art by Vaughn Bodé. When
Susi cut through the old orchard on a
fine, warm, sunny day, she met Herman,
a lonesome pterodactyl sunning himself
on a rock. So began an extraordinary
summer of friendship, adventure, discovery and . . . magic. First published in

ART OF RICHARD LUONG Signed
Recommended. By Richard Luong. “I
am extremely fortunate to have had the
opportunity to work on Cthulhu Wars.
Before the project, I had worked in
games as an illustrator and concept artist. My art didn’t garner much attention.
Cthulhu Wars launched and was a huge
success. All of a sudden people took
notice of my work and for the first time
ever, I had fans.” Krakenprint, 2016.

MISTER MIRACLE Artist’s Edition: JKMAEH. WAY UP HIGH
AMANO ILLUSTRATIONS
Highly Recommended. By Archie Goodwin. Al Williamson’s career is crammed full
of amazing accomplishments. Until seeing
this original artwork, I didn’t realize how
finely detailed this is, very much in his EC
style! This is legendary among fans. His
heroic adventure style was perfectly suited
for Star Wars--Williamson was George
Lucas’ first choice for the Star Wars newspaper comic strip, which he would later go
on to draw! IDW, 2016.
AWEAEH. HCW, 15x22, 160pg, b&w

Art by Jack Kirby. This features The
Mighty Thor, one of the early Marvel key
characters and a favorite of both Stan

that infused Kirby’s work is evident here.
Classic complete stories are included
from Journey Into Mystery #111, #117,
#118, #134, #135 and Thor Annual #2,
and more, plus a beautiful gallery section! Jack Kirby was the most important

Signed! Highly Recommended. The
third art book by award winning artist
Michael C. Hayes. Calling this a convention sketchbook doesn’t do it justice,
although Michael has certainly produced
this to offer to fans at shows he attends.
We first met him at the Spectrum show
and are hugely impressed by his talent.
In the same classical, full-blown painting
style you see from Donato Giancola,
here is fantasy--and fantasy women--brilliantly executed and with warm, rich colors and detail.

FREEHAND THE ART OF STANLEY MOUSE
Recommended. Mouse’s art
captured the 1960’s pop look and
was instrumental in linking the art scene
to the music, the other major art form of
the ‘60s generation. Best known for his
posters and album covers, Mouse created art and particularly concert posters
for the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Journey
and, of course, the Grateful Dead.

New Edition. Recommended. From
impossible staircases to tesselated
birds, Dutch artist M. C. Escher (1898-1972) crafted a unique graphic language

His work is at the same time decorative
and playful, toying constantly with optic
illusions and the limitations of sensory
perception. New edition of a 1959 classic with Escher’s commentary.

His drawings and paintings of the artist Soey Milk.
Signed and limited, 1470. Recommended. A beautifully painted,
oversized collection of increasingly
erotic images of William’s “muse,” artist
Soey Milk. Here she poses for gentle
portraits, complex illustrative tableaux,

with other girls and hints of bondage
and domination/submission. It’s one

As I mention in my description of Thomas’s fine book (FACES FIGURES FANTASIES
The Art of Thomas Haller, page 3), we just met recently. He did this portrait of me at the
San Diego ComicCon 2016. Here’s some more about him, with a wonderful portrait of
our mutual friend Kinuko Y. Craft. He writes:
“Since Kinuko Craft is special to you too, I’m also attaching a cover portrait of her that I created with Kinuko and
Mahlon’s blessings. I bought her early book from you
several years ago with an autographed card, so this is a
nice circle.”

SEX AND HORROR The Art of
Alessandro Biffignandi
Recommended. Between the late
1960s and the late 1980s, Italy went
crazy for “sexy fumetti,” a home-grown
genre of adult comics with a unique
brand of twisted humor, violence, and
up-front sexuality. One of the most
talented and prolific of the cover artists
at Edifumetto--the foremost Italian
producer of adult comics during this period--was Alessandro
Biffignandi, whose work featured horror, fantasy, and sci-fi
elements alongside plenty of naked female flesh.

The Artist’s Sketch Pad
Recommended. A popular sub-genre
of pin-up calendars was this “artist’s

of the same lady. Light, fun, classic

Recommended. Once you get past the
oft-seen Elvgren on the cover, this actually offers a fun journey through other

sketchbook pages, a tanned Hawaiian
gal, and more stylish cheesecake from
the heyday of the pin-up calendar, circa
the 1950s. Tushita.

settings, with classic hair styles and,
occasionally, nylons or lingerie. We like

Our Highest Recommendation. By Mark Schultz. This is
Mark’s new, heavily illustrated
novella--yes, a science fiction
adventure--that explores the
border between what we want to
believe is true and the reality that
we’d prefer to keep concealed.
From a crime-fiction framework,
it opens up into a breathtaking
journey through cryptic history, cautionary science-fiction and
a speculative vision of the deep future! Flesk, 2015.

war. Ultimately, the Earthmen awoke to
discover themselves conquered by Mars.

Rudy Palais, Bob Powell, John Giunta, Howard

comics created by Harvey in the early 1950s came
close to rivaling EC’s own titles. This is the very
beginnings of their horror line. Here is “Launched

From the very beginning, even before
