Crafters Corner Need a lightweight, tiered display for your table? Try a set of pet steps. These easy to assemble steps can hold up to 70 pounds, collapse down completely for storage, are quick to clean and can be set up in minutes! Cover with a pretty fleece blanket and you are ready to display anything from baked goods to jewelry, towels, soaps or candles. We suggest the set from Amazon.com (top two pictures, approx $29, search under “Doggy Steps.”) Some sets offer 4 steps. Also available from PetSmart.com item# 3523560 $25. For a larger display, use two sets of pet steps. Place the pet steps 2-3’ feet apart. For an 8’ display, use 3 each 8’x6” boards, for a 6’ display use 3 each 6’x6” boards. Place the boards across the steps to make an adjustable length display (center picture.) Cover as needed. For an additional festive touch, drape with white holiday lights. As an added bonus, the area under the steps makes a handy place to store extra supplies. Doggy Steps are also a lifesaver for older pets! We use them for both our cats and dogs. Another option is the pet step from Harriet Carter (bottom picture). This style does not lend as well to placing a board across the steps, but it does convert into a ramp, which is great for displaying a wide variety of items, especially jewelry, clothing and towels. $39.95 + s/h. Losing sales because you can’t accept credit cards? Here are two easy, painless and quick ways to start accepting credit cards - today! Easy to enroll and easy to get started. No credit check required! www.ProPay.com www.Square.com Holiday Bazaar Guides Newsletter - Fall 2012 Page 3 Business Checklist Are you making or losing money on your sales? Pricing your products is a tricky thing. You want to be competitive, yet still make money. A good rule of thumb is to set your price at about two and a half times the cost to make the item. Check other vendors. Is this price significantly over what others are charging for a similar product? If so, you will need to drop your price to make sales. How do you do this and still make money? To keep with the two and half times rule, you will need to drop your cost of making the item. Right now, we will look at straight materials costs only. We will address pricing for your time and effort in the next issue. Start by making a list of all the materials and costs needed to make each product. Divide the total costs by the number of items you can make from the materials. This will give you a rough idea of the cost/item. Here is a rough example: Cat Toy #1 - purchasing materials from local stores See the next page for Strategies to Drop Your Cost Per Product! (if you ship an item in, be sure to include shipping costs) Fleece Batting Thread Catnip (2 oz) $4.99/yd $2.99 $1.29 $2.99 Total: $12.26 Number of cat toys made: 10. Cost per toy = $12.26/10 = $1.23 each Target sales price: $3.07 (Total x 2.5) Market wants: $2.56 to make fast sales. Your costs are ABOVE what the market wants. You need to drop your cost per toy by: $.50-$.55/each Cat Toy #1 - purchasing in wholesale and bulk. Fleece - Buy wholesale. Drops cost per yard to $2.99+$.50/yard for shipping= $3.49/yard Batting - Buy on sale: $1.99 Thread - Buy wholesale: $.79 Catnip - Buy in bulk. Drops cost to $1.29 per 2 oz New Total: $7.56 Number of cat toys made: 10. Cost per toy = $7.56/10 = $.75 each Target sales price: $1.89 (Total x 2.5) Market wants: $2.56 to make fast sales. ** Your target price is now BELOW what the market wants! This allows for an EXTRA profit potential! Now you can offer discounts such as: Cat Toys - $2.75/ea or 2 for $5. Or, $2.50/ea or 10 for $20. You could also make a whole lot of cat toys and sell them for $1.99/ea as stocking stuffers. Helpful Hint: When purchasing from companies you have not done business with before, be sure to ask for samples to check for quality. Try placing a couple of small orders to make sure they deliver as promised and ship what was ordered. Always check to make sure the company has a USA phone number and address. Protect yourself - open a free business checking account and request a VISA/MC debit card. Keep this account just for purchases over the Internet. Do not keep large amounts of money in this account. Just in case someone gets hold of these credit card numbers, at least they can’t drain your main business account. www.HolidayBazaarGuide.com © 2012, Holiday Bazaar Guides LLC. All rights reserved. Holiday Bazaar Guides Newsletter - Fall 2012 Page 3 Business Checklist Continued: Strategies to Drop Your Cost Per Product 1. Buy wholesale. In order to purchase wholesale you usually need to have a business license. Purchasing wholesale can drop your materials costs by 30-60%. 2. Buy in bulk. Many times you can get a really good price on your materials by purchasing in bulk. Search Google.com for companies that sell wholesale or in bulk. For example: if you need lots of catnip - search on Google.com using the terms “wholesale catnip,” and “bulk catnip.” Need a special type? Try searching under “wholesale catnip buds,” or “bulk catnip leaf.” 3. Bargaining. Sometimes you can cut a deal with a local store for a better price if you purchase multiple items or spend a certain dollar amount. Talk to the manager. Bargaining can work for everything from flour, sugar and paper to computers, printers, ink, buttons, ribbons and lace. Negotiate for free shipping whenever you can. This will lower your costs quite a bit. 4. Co-op. Network with other vendors to purchase as a group. This option can net wonderful deals and free shipping, while keeping the amount each person pays to a minimum. 5. Rewards Points. BEFORE making your purchases, sign up for Rewards Programs if they are offered. 6. Coupons. Search for coupons and special offers. Ask friends and family to watch also. 7. Newsletters. Sign up for mailing lists and newsletters as they often include valuable coupons and offers. Sign up BEFORE purchasing so you can use the discounts right away and learn about upcoming sales. 8. Shop Around. Check multiple locations before making purchases to be sure you are getting the best prices. Take advantage of member discounts whenever possible. In Search of Tranquility! Holiday Stress: Keep sane during the holiday season! Hectic holiday schedules can make finding time to relax a challenging, if not impossible, proposition. While you need breaks from a busy workload, running off to Hawaii on a weekly basis is not generally practical. Here are some quick ideas to help you find a sense of balance in your daily life. Take time out for yourself... easier said than done? Try this method: set aside 15-20 minutes during the day to be alone in a quiet area where you can close your eyes and totally relax. Find a quiet room or area where you can turn off your phone, the TV and radio and disconnect completely from the activity if your office or home. Not only will this give you a mental break from the activities around you, it will also give you a break from the constant noise of ringing phones, conversations and such. This also gives your eyes a much needed break from working at a computer or other projects. Keeping the break short also allows overstressed people to relax without feeling guilty - after all, it is only 15-20 minutes! My favorite - go out to your car for a 20 minute cat-nap. You will find that these short breaks can do wonders for helping you make it through the day! Afterwards, you will feel more energetic and tend to be more productive. Note: when relaxing with your eyes closed you might want to set an alarm clock (in case you fall asleep). Too edgy to relax well? Try this: consider taking a rejuvenating walk and take time to really look at nature around you. Even a parking lot holds a wonder of living, growing Holiday Bazaar Guides Newsletter - Fall 2012 Page 4 Show Updates * Additions * Changes Please Note: Don’t miss out on your free event listing in our printed guides!
