Clayton overcame East Malvern in a rain soaked performance at Dunlop Reserve. The Clays failed to register a goal in the second half but were able to restrict East Malvern to only 1 major en route to a 10 point win. The victory keeps Clayton in touch with the top 5. Matthew Bennett was among the best for Clayton. St Kilda City enjoyed a comfortable win against Highett at the Peanut Farm in round 13. Their midfield was too much for the Doggies who were only able to manage 1 major after half time. The win was crucial for the Saints as they are now only percentage behind 5th placed Cheltenham. Gary Johnstone was the best for the Saints. East Brighton avenged last year’s late season loss to Heatherton with an easy win at Ross St Reserve. The Vamps were simply too good as they held the Tonners goalless all day in a team effort. The 48 point victory puts the Vamps into the top 3 for the first time since round 4 and within striking distance of a top 2 finish. Dean Francis was at his best with 4 goals. St Pauls held off a fast finishing Chelsea Heights to keep a strong hold on top spot 4 | SFL RECORD 2013 / Jason Barbin of the division 1 ladder. The Doggies set up the victory with a 5 goal to nil second quarter. With Nigel Carmody leading the way for the Dogs, they were able hang on despite the Heighters winning the last quarter. Callum Cathcart kicked 3 for St Pauls. for 2013. Last time these two teams met the Doggies won in triple figures. Unless East Malvern put in a better defensive performance the margin could blow out again. Dingley held on to their top 2 spot on the ladder with a 15 point over Cheltenham at Souter Reserve. The Dingoes led at every change to record their 11th win of the season. The loss puts the pressure back on the Rosellas as they hold on to 5th place only by percentage. Darren Andrews put in a great game down back holding Cheltenham gun forward Chris Graham goalless. East Brighton will look to solidify their top 2 spot while maintaining pressure on Dingley when they take on St Kilda City at Hurlingham Park. The Saints need a win too as they look to jump ahead of Cheltenham for the finals top 5 position. Match of the round that could go to the wire. 2 crucial ladder changing games are the highlights of round 14 as we start the final month of home and away footy. Chelsea Heights vs Heatherton Chelsea Heights take on Heatherton in what should be a one sided affair. The Heighters will look to win big as percentage will be a major factor in the final makeup of the ladder. They should get a decent boost in this game. Chelsea Heights by 50 points East Malvern vs St Pauls St Pauls take on East Malvern at Dunlop Reserve as they look to move one step closer to locking up the minor premiership St Pauls by 45 points East Brighton vs St Kilda City East Brighton by 13 points Cheltenham vs Clayton Last time Cheltenham and Clayton it was the latter that took the 4 points. This time around however the Rosellas are in better form despite a loss to Dingley last week. A win for either side could see them move a game clear in 5th spot. Will be a tight one. Cheltenham by 20 points Highett vs Dingley Highett take on Dingley as they still search for their first win of the season. It won’t come easy against the 2nd placed Dingoes who need the win to hold off the in-form Vampires and hold onto 2nd spot. Though they have lost these kinds of games in the past, don’t expect the Dingoes to take this one easy. Dingley by 39 points SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 1: Head to Head - Round 14 St.Pauls v. The Doggies powered through the 2nd leg with a turn of pace rarely seen outside of the Olympics, but with under half to go, young Archer up from the colts & swimming in his 1st top level race helped peg back the margin. At the last turn it was still neck & neck and Gilly put it a mighty effort, but we were touched out at the wall. (Do you get that it was a bit wet?) Pottsy’s crew had a nice day for some good old fashion footy. Perfect conditions leading up to the game & they started off well against a good opponent in St. Paul’s. Then the heavens opened and stayed open for the whole game! There was only a couple points CHELTENHAM So much for the warmest start to a year on record! Polar Bears and Penguins were seen frolicking on the hill at Dingley last week, such were the icy, arctic-like conditions. The constant rain and freezing wind made life tough for all sides at Souter Oval, but the Seniors effort cannot be questioned. Two fluky Dingo goals aside, there was nothing between the two teams all day, it just unfortunate that we ended up on the losing end. Massive game this week against Clayton that could well decide our fate come years end. The Reserves no doubt had the worst of the conditions if that is possible on such an ordinary day, but they also ran into an extremely well-drilled and talented Dingley outfit. The end result may not have looked overly positive, but it wasn’t through lack EAST MALVERN To say the conditions were difficult for players (and spectators) at DW Lucas Reserve last Saturday would be putting it lightly. Melbourne’s brief spring burst a couple of days earlier was quickly halted as steady rain and cold conditions set in for the afternoon. In the Reserves, East Malvern were searching for their second win of the season against traditional foes Clayton. The state of the ground ensured that it would be a scrappy game from start to finish. The Panthers started well with Ben “Ganno” Gannon booting a monster goal from the boundary line in front of the Clayton bench. Ganno’s form was one of the highlights of the day kicking every one of the Panthers’ 4 goals for the match. His 4 goals moves him to within 3 of the Reserves leading goal kickers currently led by the ageless George Gemetzis and DJ Benny Padula each with 11 goals. Despite our promising start, Clayton got on in it at half time & the boys battled hard, but couldn’t get the job done. Beetlejuice was best afield for both sides, Washo loved the soapy conditions, Bryce continued his solid comeback, Chuck battled the man flu to put in another good game and Cupit threw his 30kg bod at everything. Back to the drawing board this week. It’s now time for players to show who should be picked for the finals. The 3’s (or the “Factory” ) squared off against the Mountain Men (who like Mountain women) in what was a final 5 shaping contest. Was essentially a nil all draw at 1/4 time before the likes of Flack & Zac starting tearing the game a new one! Enter Cult Figure “The Experiment” who cleared the ball from the centre bounce & let loose a barrel from 70m that sailed through post high & caused some tent popping in the presidential trackies! Good win in the end. The Colts again showed plenty early but a of effort that saw us go down by 10 goals. Just beaten by a very good team and need to re-group for another big task this week against the Clays. poor 3rd 1/4 cost them. The Frenchman went on his goal kicking ways with another lazy 5, while Elliot & Patty showed why they’ve played a bit of senior footy already this year and Stevie Kat showed why he will in the future. Concentration seems to be our biggest opponent. In addition to Ganno, best players for the EM’s included Brad Hemphill in the ruck, Nath Moore in the middle and Harrow and Benny McIvor down back. Brad’s form over the past month has been particularly impressive so let’s hope he continues to hit the packs hard over the final five rounds. adjusted better to the conditions early, kicking 4 goals to 2 in the first half to hold an 11 point advantage at the main break. The Thirds moved into the top five with another strong win, this time over Dandenong. With more and more players starting to gel, the Chiefs are fast becoming a cohesive unit that can do some real damage come September. The big task is ensuring that we get there. Luckily for our Netballers, the wet, wintery conditions caused their match to be postponed. With just a few weeks left before the finals, make sure you get down and support them!! Although the rain eased for the Seniors, conditions were no better with both teams scrapping it out in ultimate wet-weather footy. Given the conditions, the 4 points were right there for the taking by either side. Coach Matty Carroll spoke about the importance of getting a score on the board early as there was every chance a total of 4 or 5 goals could be enough to win. Matty was right on the money but unfortunately it was Clayton who The boys rallied in the second half and put in a gutsy display of tough, contested football. Tom Delahunty was superb across the ground all day whilst Trent Hotton made the conditions look easy, providing an important target across half-forward. Matty, Crimmo and Azza were good all day in the guts while the backline continued to do their thing with Fish, Johno, Tractor and Doxey all solid. Despite holding Clayton goalless in the second half, the Panthers could only manage one more goal themselves, falling 10 points short at the final siren. However, plenty of positives can be taken from the effort into next week’s clash with top of the table St. Pauls. Next function - EMFC Trivia Night, 7pm on Saturday 17th August at the clubrooms! More details to follow - keep an eye on the wesbite and facebook. www.sfl.com.au | 13 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 1: Club Notes DINGLEY The precipitation persisted unabated all afternoon, leaving conditions unconducive to any sort of pretty football. In a slippery, muddy slog we kept our noses in front of Cheltenham all day and at the denouement a 15 point margin probably equates to something more substantial than that on a drier day. Dazza was letting nothing pass down back, Wonnacott was back to his mean best, and Luke Bartholomew provided many highlights with his trademark bursts down the middle. The male exclusion zone created by Ladies Day at the Club forced a number of those who HIGHETT Highett Bulldogs visited The Peanut Farm and firstly paid the price of $10-80 for parking as the only other offer of $4.70 for an hour does not cover a football game. Then there was more loss growing every quarter watching the scores for both Seniors & Reserves sides. The weather was atrocious and may have reached six degrees at its best, with rain most of the day. The visitor’s dugout had a “swimming pool” out the front, so St Kilda City kindly allowed us to use the Boag’s tent as our base after half time. We thank the league sponsors for providing our shelter. The good news is that Senior Coach Daniel Marshall was happy with each of his players and their effort on the day. The scores may appear to tell a different story without that feedback to players, but the top game was played in good spirit in spite of a sixty-six point deficit and our Bulldogs stayed focus and continued doing their best and were simply eaten by a better side. Well done guys! 14 | SFL RECORD 2013 usually habitate that area to gravitate towards the hill, where a modicum of shelter and Ronnie’s raging fire helped alleviate the discomfort of the drizzle. Thus the Hill Club enjoyed its best patronage of the season despite the poor weather, whilst the potato peelers’ function went down as the social success story of the year. Our trek to Highett this week affords us the opportunity to fine tune many facets of our game before enbarking on a very tough last 4 matches, all against other sides currently in the mix for finals action. The coach would dearly love to take some big scalps to boost team self-belief in the run home to September. SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 1: Club Notes SENIORS – Sponsored by Total Waste Management: Sometimes a hard fought out grinding victory is more satisfying and does more for a team’s self-belief than an easier victory. Such was the case against Chelsea Heights who always provide great opposition. Jaz Allen handled the footy cleanly and didn’t chance too many short deliveries going long on every occasion. A great duel unfolded where our own ‘Sandy’ Johnstone was all over Travis Johnstone like Talcum Baby Powder for the whole game and won the honours in a disciplined display. Christian McCarthy battled hard as did Gilbo and Nudge out of the guts. Mark Marasco again showed his value at CHB and was like a salmon swimming upstream on several occasions turning the ball back into our forward line. This week we travel to East Malvern and must continue to gather momentum as we count down to the business end of home and away season. ST KILDA CITY A huge game if at all. Highett were fired up and all credit to them they came out to play. After an arm wrestle in the first half of the game, the boys started to adapt to the wet conditions and took control in the second half. A strong performance was only marred by our inaccuracy in front of goal due to the conditions. The club faces a massive test over the next 2 weeks, as we strive to win a game against a top 4 side and cement ourselves a finals position. Destiny is in our own hands and we have shown that our best can compete against any other in the competition. The test will be in the next 2 weeks if we can do this for long enough over the 4 quarters and receive the reward we deserve. ST PAULS this week as we travel down the road to East Brighton where a win would give us a huge boost as we vie for a finals position. Seniors report by Gav – Sponsored by Elwood Community Bank: After a disappointing final quarter against St Pauls, the boys were keen to make amends and fight for a spot in the top 5 again. Terrible conditions confronted us at the Peanut Farm and I would suggest many players and supporters would not have seen the ground that wet for a number of years HEATHERTON Ray White Real Estate Reserves: A huge week for the Tunner reserves. A commitment from most players to fly the flag for the 100 year strong footy club. Last week the game was played with great spirit. Although the boys didn’t get the four points, they can hold their heads up high due to the spirit in which they played the game. With only five games to go it would be great to see the sort of commitment shown on Saturday for the rest of the year. If that were to happen some RESERVES – Sponsored by the Cushion Lounge: As the rain began to tumble down and the footy became a cake of soap, it became a game where the 2nd or 3rd man to the contest had the greatest chance of winning possession. In a hard fought contest, we had winners in on-baller Ben Carracher, 3 goals - and big James Marasco ‘Sealed’ the deal with a return to form. Bryce Hayes who relishes the wet conditions (his father was a mudder) racked up 29 possessions whilst James Fisher also chipped in with Pratty down back to help restrict the Heighters to only 2 goals. Under 19’s - Sponsored by Merkon Constructions: This was an important match for both sides trying to establish a position in the fi nals. In a tight contested fi rst half we trailed by 2 goals and couldn’t fi nd a forward target despite the efforts Reserves report by Blunners – Sponsored by The Inkerman Hotel: Wet and cold conditions meet us at wins will come the reserves way. Keep up the good work boys. Huge congratulations to Needles in playing his 150th club game. Cody Gems & Jewellery Seniors: Last week saw the club host last year’s premiers at Ross St Reserve. Conditions were more suited to water polo than football. Only one person wasn’t complaining about the conditions “ Roges”. The Warrnambool wizard relished the conditions. Unfortunately for the club, we went goalless again for the of Bob Carracher in the midfi eld. After Half time Matty Blee went into the ruck and completely dominated the hit outs which led to continuous clearances and forays forward allowing Nick Stubbings to showcase his silky skills as we slammed through 6 goals. Herby and Hollywood Muldoon provided great run through half forward as did Dyl Stewart on return at CHB. The 37 point margin was a great result. Well done boys. Again we manage to pull together a full side at the last minute which saw Spanish and Vadim line up for City. Against the pouring rain we managed to kick two goals in the first quarter. The ressies were keen to maintain our intensity and pressure in the second and we had a nice lead going into half time. After a quick dry off and some changes of socks we promised to keep pushing on in the second half. We did scoring a number of goals in the third quarter. The resssies ended up victories by about 10 goals and the song was with plenty of gusto after the game . Strong performers were Lukey B, Norbs, Cotts and Benny May. Go City! second time in three weeks. Not a great result for the club. Five games remaining for the year and expecting some huge matches to come. Players need to re-group. A huge task this week as we face Chelsea Heights. Socially – Ladies night on August 9th at the club. Live band and plenty of giveaways so get your mothers, wives, girlfriends to the club for what promises to be a great night. For more information see Dale. Tunners 1913-2013 (100 years strong) www.sfl.com.au | 15 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 1: Club Notes EAST BRIGHTON Reserves: We don’t have to bang on about the weather last week. It was very wet but what we can say is that either Heatherton drop down to Division 2 or the new rooms cannot come quick enough. The portables are an absolute disaster, particularly on a wet day. On the ground the 2’s were more determined and handled the slop better than their opponents. The rain never let up. It was a must win and the players got the job done. This week against City may well determine whether the “F” word is to be mentioned again. Seniors: Heatherton have created some upsets in the wet against East Brighton in recent times none more surprising than last year at Hurlingham Park. Form on the track during the week was poor, preparation was not ideal and the Tonners are desperate to remain in Division 1 because it’s a long way back from Division 2 so a fierce contest in shocking conditions was expected. It was important to get the jump and the team did hoping St.Pauls could do their bit at Chelsea Heights and allow the Vampires to slip into 3rd place. That won’t be permanent if the game against St Kilda City goes the wrong way. Form has been pretty good over the past month but the Saints could have pinched it last time around and have improved in recent weeks so expect it to go down to the wire. This is a real danger game. With a pretty even first half at Mordialloc, the visitors held sway by only 3 points after being down by a tad over 2 goals at quarter time. With goals like diamonds in the conditions, Oakleigh District managed 3 goals to one in the third “Premiership” quarter to hold an eight point lead at 3/4 time. Both teams managed only one goal each in the last quarter with Oakleigh District hanging on for a seven point victory and won Top Spot on the Ladder, a game ahead of Mordialloc, who cling onto second spot by percentage over the next 3 teams, all being 9 and 4. Bentleigh took on Hampton and were never in trouble, once again showing they bounce back hard from previous defeats. Hampton’s Finals dream surely is out of reach now, almost requiring a miracle to reach the top 5. With 4 of the last 5 games against teams above them on the ladder, 3 currently in the top 5, I can’t see them making up the games deficit and increasing their percentage enough to get through. South Yarra went down to Murrumbeena as expected, the weather prevented Murrumbeena from getting a healthy boost to their percentage and Murrumbeena still has concerns in that area, as 6th place Skye has a whopping percentage, if they can catch up in wins, they will leap frog Murrumbeena into the finals. Of course, if Murrumbeena manages to keep winning the percentage difference will mean “Jack”. Skye overcame Caulfield with ease at Koornang Park in another low scoring affair. Skye’s final’s dream remains well and truly alive, Caulfield can concentrate on development for Season 2014, they will need to look for some more talent if they are going to improve next year. Whatever faint finals hopes that Moorabbin held for this season were well and truly killed off by an efficient Springvale Districts side. The most one sided game of the round saw the home side never troubled. Bentleigh vs Springvale DIstricts Hopefully the weather is better this week as this shapes as the match of the round. Springvale Districts are one of the form sides over the last few weeks whereas Bentleigh has been a bit on the patchy side, dropping a few games they should have easily won. Both sides will be keen to get a “mental edge” over the other as finals approach. I think Bentleigh will reign here but there shouldn’t be much in it Skye vs Hampton If this match goes Skye’s way, they could be a great chance to jump into 5th spot, depending on Murrumbeena’s performance. Hampton won’t make the finals, but will be keen to take as many scalps as it can for the rest of the season and would love to say they killed of someone else’s finals chances. That won’t happen this week, Skye has too much at stake and should be too good here. Oakleigh District vs Caulfield Oakleigh will be keen to extract revenge on the Bears for the earlier loss at Koornang Park this season. Caulfield will be keen to win to regain the “Chops Langkau Trophy” that these teams vie for each year they play each other. If both teams win one game each against each other in a season, the winner if the Trophy goes to who wins after all the scores are added together. This means that Caulfield won by 16 points in round 5, so Oakleigh District means to win by 17 points or more, Caulfield needs to either win by any margin or lose by less than 16 points. Game on! Oakleigh to win, no prediction on who takes out the “Chops Langkau Trophy”. Moorabbin vs South Yarra South Yarra’s season doesn’t seem to be getting any better. They finally get a game against a team only 2 spots above them on the ladder and have to not only play them “away’, but have to play a team on the rebound who will be keen to take out their frustrations from last week’s loss. Moorabbin will win this game. Murrumbeena vs Mordialloc This also could rate as game of the round. Mordialloc will be keen to get back on the winning list, Murrumbeena will be keen on holding onto fifth spot on the ladder. A Murrumbeena loss combined with a Skye victory would see the first change in the make up of the five since early in the season. All that being said, this is the hardest game for me to select the winner. I can never seem to pick Murrumbeena correctly, they seem to delight in proving me wrong. I still have to go on gut feel. Gut feel tells me Mordialloc, so Murrumbeena should be happy with that, as previously stated, they love to prove me wrong! www.sfl.com.au | 17 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 2 Results: Round 13 SENIORS RESERVES TEAM P W L D F A % PTS TEAM P W L D F A % Oakleigh District 13 10 3 0 1115 890 125.28 40 Bentleigh 13 13 0 0 1574 433 363.51 PTS 52 Mordialloc 13 9 4 0 1081 641 168.64 36 Skye 13 12 1 0 1217 399 305.01 48 Bentleigh 13 9 4 0 1075 752 142.95 36 Murrumbeena 13 9 4 0 1096 688 159.30 36 Springvale Dists. 13 9 4 0 1127 929 121.31 36 Hampton 13 9 4 0 990 670 147.76 36 Murrumbeena 13 8 5 0 1147 994 115.39 32 Springvale Dists. 13 6 7 0 832 896 92.86 24 Skye 13 7 6 0 1231 779 158.02 28 Oakleigh District 13 6 7 0 864 1055 81.90 24 Hampton 13 6 7 0 862 914 94.31 24 Mordialloc 13 5 8 0 945 799 118.27 20 Moorabbin 13 4 9 0 889 1132 78.53 16 South Yarra 13 3 10 0 577 1237 46.65 12 Caulfield 13 3 10 0 750 1139 65.85 12 Moorabbin 13 2 11 0 632 1419 44.54 8 South Yarra 13 0 13 0 655 1762 37.17 0 Caulfield 13 0 13 0 327 1458 22.43 0 Division 2 Seniors Mordialloc Oakleigh District 3.1 1.0 6.3 6.0 Division 2 Reserves 7.4 9.0 8.5-53 10.0-60 Mordialloc: Goal Kickers: J. We couldn’t maintain our intensity in the second half against a quality outfit, eventually going down by around 6 goals. There are still areas for improvement including our discipline and playing to team instructions, but we still have belief that we can participate in finals. Better players were Giz, big Davo, cockroach Chris Worner, Timmsy and Woody. The ressies took on the undefeated Bentleigh outfit and were on from the start. Our intensity, work rate and head over the ball footy was outstanding all day having led for 99% of game time until Bentleigh kicked a lucky one with only seconds to go to get over the line by 2 points. SPRINGVALE DISTRICTS Vale Ray “Silver” Neal Heads up boys! If we play with this intensity over the coming weeks we will be a force to be reckoned with. Toast rucked tirelessly all day and it was great to see Pooch back on the field. Andy Sayer put in a good one as did Hammer and Shorty. 3 August – Hammers Family Day & Night Thanks to our supporters who travelled to Bentleigh to support us in atrocious conditions. The first half of the seniors match had fewer highlights than Australia’s first innings at Lord’s. Liam Mulcahy put through the only goal of the first half midway through the second term. Disappointingly, it was our only major of the match, as the Bombers fired up in the second half and kicked away to a comfortable win. MURRUMBEENA Under 19s:The boys must have seen the weather forecast as the Under 19s were short a few soldiers and started with 15. In addition, Eggy must have regretted making a comeback as he lasted 10 minutes and was off to hospital to grab three stitches! Overall, neither side could make use of the ‘best’ of the conditions in the first half but the Beena did earn a four gaol lead at half time. When the persistent rain came, the free-flowing, silky skills were left in the change rooms and kicking goals became a bonus. To the boys credit they responded to Pete’s game-plan well and Sammy Parry bagging three goals and Harls showing the forward-line how it’s done and sneaking down to kick one. Given the lack of Beena boys we appreciate Clayton playing the game in the right spirit. Ressies: In a must win game played in very ordinary conditions, the Beena struggled early and found South Yarra were up by 1 point at half time but were only able to kick 1 point for the remainder of the game. Beena ended up winning by 24 points and kicked 4 goals, 14 points. The Beena had a few big OAKLEIGH DISTRICT All at the club wish Matt Bowman a speedy recovery and will provide any support to he and his family may require. It is important that Matt’s team mates continue to support him during his recovery, and we know you will all certainly do that. All the best Matty and we look forward to seeing your smiling face soon! Senior Report: the coldest day in July for 6 years also produced our most important victory this year, getting the points over Mordialloc at their home ground. A few basic errors and overuse of the ball in the wet conditions resulted to a 13 deficit at quarter time, and Coach Chalwell demanded a more direct brand of contested football. The boys lifted kicking 5 goals to 2 to go in at half time just 3 points adrift, game on! The third quarter saw us continue to put our head over the ball and 26 | SFL RECORD 2013 Tom Siegert seemed to revel in the atrocious conditions and played his best game of the year. He had terrific support in co-captain Tim Kennedy, who was also outstanding. Adam Ballard was influential, Anthony O’Shea again terrific, Tom Heagney continued his solid form, while Dan McKinley found plenty of the footy. But overall, Skye seemed to handle the mud, rain and freezing temperatures better than we did. our only goal in the opening quarter. He was among our better players, as were Kyle Green, Dave Baude, and Benn Harris. Will Lucardie also enjoyed his best performance since returning from injury. The last time the reserves played Skye they didn’t trouble the scorers. Shane Larkins and Greeny played well in only their second game this year and Crazy was like a pig in mud and racked up the possessions. Justin Ando continued his good form and moved on to the ball after half time and was best on ground. Dave Easton also dominated in the centre and Rocket was dangerous up forward. score after the first quarter were to setup the forward line paddock which worked well & gave the boys something to celebrate along the way. The last 5 minutes of game time consisted of 20 ball ups in our defensive goal square which was indicative of the day, before the sprint to the showers to sing the song. Seniors: Thank-you to all of the loyal Beena supporters who made their way down to Sth Yarra in trying conditions. The first step on Saturday was to throw game plans & matchups in the bin, the second was to get our toughest competitors around the ball & the third was to sit back and watch 2 hours of Greco Roman Wrestling. It was hard to tell who was playing well as everyone was covered in mud, so we’ll say well done to Cory, Semmel, Fartho & Willis who were in there somewhere. Mitch got on the end of a few early & Josh Smith worked hard in the ruck all day. Our only opportunities to Sponsors: The Beena is indebted to the following 2013 loyal sponsors including a number of welcome additions: Thomson Real Estate, Chadstone Toyota, Oakleigh Lions Club, JEMCO Kitchens, Electron Flow, Adval, Attwood Newsagency, Bakers Delight, Bendigo Bank, Brew Bar, Cross Hydraulics, David Jones Pharmacy, Harjan Investigations, IGA X-Press, M-Print, National Australia Bank, Rainbow Meats, Streets Ahead, Warehouse Sales Carnegie, Zests Pizzas, Re-Creation Carnegie, GoBig Constructions, Bowen Automotive, Entice Restaurant, FPC Financial Planning Choices. most importantly continue to run hard on the wide expanses of Mordialloc, resulting in us kicking 3 goals to 1 to take a deserved 8 point lead into the final change. The last term was hard and tight, but we managed to kick away to a 15 point lead, only to see Mordialloc kick a late one and narrow the gap. But it was too little too late and the Oaks brought away an invaluable 4 points to end the round a game clear on top of the table with 5 rounds to play. rewards. BEST: Dave Babaro, Paul Gurr, Dave Slater, Matt Jolly, Jason Thexton. This Week: ODFC and Caulfield play the second leg of the Chops Langkau Trophy. The Bears have the upper hand after winning well against us in Round 5, so we need a big performance to win it back. (For those who are unaware, Chops was a fantastic player with the Oaks (League B&F Winner) and a Caulfield premiership player, and is held in the highest regard by both clubs for his playing and coaching contributions over the years.) He is also a current Caulfield assistant coach and will be on their bench on Saturday. Let’s give a good account of ourselves boys. Reserves Report: A poor opening term against a committed opposition put us behind the eight ball early and in wet conditions there was no coming back. Great to see a number of boys show concern and support for their fallen team mate (without doing anything stupid). This week is a chance to get back on the winners list, and to continue to make a run for a spot in the finals come September. It ain’t over yet. Get to training, do the work and get the This week we face ladder leaders Oakleigh District away this week – a big challenge. But we were good enough to upset them in our last meeting, and if we put in a similar effort there is no reason why we can’t repeat the dose this time round. SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 2: Club Notes MORDIALLOC Reserves This was shaping up as an 8 point game for us, a loss would make it very difficult to figure in September action, a win would put us back in the hunt for 5th spot. The boys were focused from the start and put a lot of pressure on the Oakleigh side which resulted in us having our best quarter of year kicking 6.1 to Oakleigh 0.2. Lawton, Pitura & Maguire giving us plenty of drive through the midfield with Barlow finishing it off in the forward line. From the second quarter onwards the rain was pelting down but the boys kept their composure kicking a further 2 goals to go into the half time with a 7 goal lead. side really able to impact the scoreboard the Mordi boys were still tough at it with Williams and Ardrey starting to impact the game. With the season on the line the boys responded with a further 3 goals to put the game out of Oakleighs’ reach. In was a fantastic effort with every player playing their role and keeping our season alive. Seniors: In the top of the table clash on the weekend, unfortunately the weather didn’t play its part and turned out one of the wetter days for a while. Still, it didn’t ruin what turned out to be a great contest. We managed to get the jump on Oakleigh in the first quarter kicking 4 goals to 1 and coming in with a handy lead in the wet weather. being a bit wasteful in front of goal were able to cut the lead back to within a goal at half time. The second half continued as the first half finished. Oakleigh probably played smarter football in the conditions and were able to hold on for a 7 point victory. Well done to the guys though in fighting back and lifting our heads to only concede 4 goals after this. Things didn’t really go our way but well done to Springvale. Let’s win the last 5 games lads as we know we are good enough. Well done the Walshy and Johnny P for a great Trivia night last week. Nothing but a win this week lads…. what we are trying to achieve boys and the wins will come, starting this week with South Yarra. Best players were Lincoln & Steve who battled hard all day without a rest, Chops is starting to show the boys how to impose yourself physically on the game, and Jordan had a great game with sure hands in the wet. Well done too to Lobby who showed he’s not a one trick pony and did some great ruck work. Win at all costs this week boys… THIRDS The boys played Top side Skye this week and in ordinary conditions , the boys lacked the endeavour of previous weeks to get a lesson in footy today although we only had 13 and thanks to Skye for lending us 4 players it was difficult to get much going. Keeping working hard at SOUTH YARRA The Seniors slogged their way through the mud against Murrumbeena last week in our first real hitout in those conditions this year. The boys battled hard for the entirety of the match and were rewarded with three goals in the second half, but ultimately went down by 35 points. Dan Russell being one of the standout players. The Reserves were also competitive in their match. It was a low scoring encounter again affected by the heavy conditions, but the Yarras went down by 24 points in the end. Alastair Noel was one of the best. Today we face Moorabbin in what can be seen as a good opportunity to snag our first win for the season. Go Lions! www.sfl.com.au | 27 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 2: Club Notes BENTLEIGH Bentleigh has maintained its spot in third position on the ladder after an emphatic win over Hampton. The Demons followed their win over Moorabbin last week with another win over Hampton. This week shapes as another mustwin game with the Demons taking on Springvale Districts. Both teams have nine wins and four losses and the result could go a long way to shaping the finals. This week marks milestone games for several Bentleigh players. Under 19s players Steven Galileos and Dimitri Petrakis both play their 50th games, while senior defender Paul Magnifico remains stuck on 99 games after missing last week’s game. Another player due to play his 100th match this week is defender Chris Clement. A mainstay of the Bentleigh back line, Clement’s signature is his easy going, laconic nature on the field where he can often be found laughing and joking with opposition forwards. A 2009 premiership player who recently spent a year in Western Australia, Clement is a popular member of the Bentleigh family. Bentleigh has several big events coming up and is hoping all can attend the $1000 Draw on July 27 as well as the Auction night on August 10. Ashwood and Dandenong slogged it out at Essex Heights Reserve, with the Magpies registering a thrilling comefrom-behind win. In a lowscoring contest, the Redlegs conceded just one goal for the first three quarters and held a decisive advantage at the final change. Not to be denied, the home side snapped into action and four unanswered goals in the last quarter saw them steal an unlikely seven-point victory. Josh Stanton’s dominance was one of the catalysts for Ashwood’s resurgence. There was another close finish at McDonald Reserve, with Lyndale getting the better of Black Rock. It was a classic see-sawing contest for most of the afternoon with neither side able to take control of the match. But with the game in the balance, Lyndale booted four goals to one in the final term to get up by nine points. Trevor Kumetaitis was unstoppable up forward for the winners with a six-goal haul. Over at Hallam Reserve, Mount Waverley had little trouble in its 22-point triumph over the Hawks. In a game where goals were at a premium, the Mountain Lions gained the ascendancy in the opening stanza and Hallam simply couldn’t claw their way back / Will Hunter into it. Both sides added just one goal each in a very scrappy second half. Despite conditions that hampered the big men, Mount Waverley ruckman Michael Dennis was a standout. Carrum Patterson Lakes returned to the winner’s list with a very comfortable 50-point demolition of Endeavour Hills down at Roy Dore Reserve. After a first quarter stalemate, the Lions lifted in the second and pulled away to an 18-point lead. That was as close as the Falcons got; they failed to trouble the scorers in the second half as Carrum Patterson Lakes cruised home with Adam Lihuillier leading the charge. The final game saw Doveton get the better of Sandown at Power Reserve. The Eagles faced some tough resistance in the first half and led by just two goals at the main break. But as good sides do, they found another level after half time and a five-goal final term completed the 50-point victory. Paul Dye provided the spark up forward for Doveton with three majors. With just five games remaining before finals, every win is crucial for the sides within reach of a finals berth. And round 14 is set to throw up some terrific clashes that could have some serious ramifications for those finals aspirants. The first of these games is at Mayfield Reserve between Mount Waverley and Sandown. The Cobras are still a chance of making the finals, but a loss here will be a massive blow. A win could also put them in the box seat with a couple of winnable games ahead. With so much on the line I expect a spirited performance from Sandown, but on their efforts to date I think the Mountain Lions will be too good. Lyndale current holds fifth spot by the skin of their teeth. They host Carrum Patterson Lakes at Barry Powell Reserve. The Lions are in good form and look almost assured of a maiden finals appearance. Both sides are more than capable of winning this game, but on recent form I have to tip Carrum Patterson Lakes to get the points. The sixth-placed Ashwood travels to Barry Simon Reserve to take on the winless Endeavour Hills. This is a golden opportunity for them to bridge the percentage gap between them and the Pumas and I reckon the Magpies will be ruthless and win this one easily. Black Rock faces the toughest road trip in Division 3: Doveton at Power Reserve. I have liked the look of Black Rock in recent weeks, but unfortunately the Eagles are looking almost unbeatable at the moment. Doveton to win comfortably. Lastly, Dandenong plays Hallam at Greaves Reserve. The Redlegs will be out to consolidate their spot in the five win a big win over the struggling Hawks and I reckon they will get home in a canter. Hopefully the weather is a little nicer this weekend... www.sfl.com.au | 33 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Division 3 Results: Round 13 SENIORS RESERVES TEAM P W L D F A % PTS TEAM P W L D F A % Doveton Eagles 13 13 0 0 1492 746 200.00 52 Sandown 13 12 1 0 1188 646 183.90 48 Mount Waverley 13 10 3 0 1435 887 161.78 40 Doveton Eagles 13 11 2 0 1331 728 182.83 44 C.P.L 13 9 4 0 971 845 114.91 36 Dandenong 13 10 3 0 987 640 154.22 40 Dandenong 13 8 5 0 1126 944 119.28 32 Ashwood 13 8 5 0 1029 657 156.62 32 Lyndale 13 7 6 0 1068 1029 103.79 28 C.P.L 13 8 5 0 998 937 106.51 32 Ashwood 13 7 6 0 1077 1111 96.94 28 Mount Waverley 13 6 7 0 982 979 100.31 24 Sandown 13 6 7 0 1204 952 126.47 24 Lyndale 13 5 8 0 872 889 98.09 20 Black Rock 13 4 9 0 869 1356 64.09 16 Endeavour Hills 13 3 10 0 791 1075 73.58 12 Hallam 13 1 12 0 774 1350 57.33 4 Hallam 13 2 11 0 665 1028 64.69 8 Endeavour Hills 13 0 13 0 584 1380 42.32 0 Black Rock 13 0 13 0 438 1702 25.73 0 Division 3 Seniors Ashwood Dandenong 1.3 1.0 1.4 3.5 Division 3 Reserves 1.6 4.7 5.9-39 4.8-32 Ashwood: Goal Kickers: P. Our Thirds bounced back nicely with a thumping win over South Yarra. The knife edge season for our Senior Group continues this weekend with a trip away to Mt.Waverley as we hope our boys can rise again to the occasion with a fair bit on the line. The best way to stay in touch with everything around the club is via www.sandowncobrasfc.com.au, Sandown Cobras on Facebook, @ DOVETON EAGLES The thirds took on a top side in Cerberus and weren’t disgraced. They had the best playing conditions of the day before the rain set in. Mozzie kept up his great form and was supported by Rayzor, Benny Mc and Woody. Ray also got 3 and Mitch got a couple. Then the rain came and Power Reserve turned to a mud bath! It made for some tough contested footy and our reserves were up for DANDENONG Round 13 wrap, Wet, Wet, Wet – Cold. Torrential rain late Fri and all day Saturday combined with a temperature forecast that would have seen Tasmanian’s cowering indoors, but not our players, they braved the conditions and took to fields to fly the DFC flag. The Thirds travelled to Cheltenham, where a raft of ducks floating around the northern end of the ground gave some insight to what was in store. Our Boys put in a spirited effort, but were not able to match the class of the opposition in the difficult conditions. Over to Ashwood for the Seniors and Reserves. Slick and Joker relished the conditions while Kerr, Westy and Cody were great too. Tick was the major goal kicker with 2. The seniors were up for the challenge playing against an always dangerous Sandown side. It was very even for the 1st half but the boys stepped it up in the 3rd. Led by Matty O, Bull and Hunt in the inches (50mm) of water sitting on the surface. The reserves paddled out for a low scoring affair to take the 4 points, the highlight of day was holding Ashwood goal less making Coach Woody the happiest man in the rain. The Seniors had the worst of the conditions, with the ground now totally chopped up. In an absolute slog, we went into the final quarter with handy 31 – 12 lead but then we simply stopped while Ashwood found another gear to run over the top of us in the last. Preview Round 14. Off to a great start with the ball moving quickly in conditions that certainly did not suit footy the Pumas were able to give themselves a 7 point break at the first break. The 2nd quarter was one of our worst for the year with the Jets completely outplaying us and managing to kicked 2 goals late and earn a 2 point lead at the main break. The last quarter was all Lyndale as we applied pressure all over the ground and ran and carried the ball with aggression. Late goals to Trevor Kumetaitis, Alex Bertucci & Matthew Stuart got the Pumas over the line by 9 points. The Reserves completely outplayed their opponents early getting out to a 7 goal lead at halftime but all credit to the Jets Reserves outfit they were able to get numbers around the ball in the 2nd half and make it a real hard contest with only 3 goals kicked. In the end Brenchos boys were able to win by 41 points giving them still some chance to figure in finals action. ENDEAVOUR HILLS Round 13 saw the Falcons vs CPL at Rory Dore Reserve in what was forecast for very sloppy conditions. After last weeks big win in the 2’s, signs were promising to start the day off with a close tough fought out game. After being in front at Quarter time and less than a kick behind at the main break the reserves couldn’t finish the job. Despite the 40 point loss some great performances where put forward in the likes of Ronnie Prudham getting mass amounts of footy and kicking a monster torpedo through for the 6 points looked best a field, along with Richie Masquiren also racking up the ASHWOOD SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: BARRY KENNA & Co.- For any legal advice or representation, call Barry Kenna of Barry Kenna & Co. and he and his associates will lead you down the right path to success in any legal matter. Juniors: Congratulations to our Under 9 tackers for winning the Burke Lightening Cup 2013 great job boys the future is in good hand Seniors: In conditions that were more suited to swimming than football Ashwood lined up against Dandenong in a massive game for our season. After a tight fi rst quarter with few opportunities up forward for both sides we managed a narrow lead of just 3 points. 42 | SFL RECORD 2013 Netball: The Saturday netballers were washed out in their match last weekend and still find themselves in 3rd position but only 1 win away from top spot. The next game for the ladies will be held on the 27th July when we take on 4th placed Cheltenham at noon. Saturday August 24th (Round 18): Please keep this date open as we are in the stages of organising our sponsors and past players day to be held while we take on Dandenong to win back the Peter Shannahan Memorial Trophy. Beer Pong, Jelly Shots, Drinking Games and a DJ to play your favourite tunes. Peter Shannahan Memorial Trophy: touches and looking damaging in front of goal. The Seniors took to the field and by this time the weather had truly set in. Again close all day, the scores were tight until the final term with the Lions getting a few quick scores late to stretch the lead. Nate Reid was good all day continuing his good form and putting through 2 majors along with the 3 Peake brothers and the Burke Brothers strong through out. This week Endeavour Hills are back at home to take on the Ashwood Magpies. Be sure to get down to Barry Simon and support The Falcs. In the second quarter despite having plenty of the football throughout our decision making and style of attack in some cases meant we were not able to put any sort of meaningful score on the board while a long and direct game from Dandenong saw them put on 3 goals. Things continued on in the third much as they had all day, our attacks were breaking down after not playing to the conditions in most cases and at the last change we found ourselves 3 goals in arrears. The boys were called on for a massive fi nal term effort and the early stages of the quarter seemed as though the conditions might win out. But an inspired fi nal 10 minutes saw us play dry weather like football and score 4 unanswered goals to steal a fantastic 7 point win. Stanna, Dicko, Perko and Hale Damage While still waiting on confirmation we are hopeful that former Lyndale Footballer and Shinboner of the Century Glenn Archer will be in attendance. We struggled with the wet conditions and we were unable to adjust our game to the conditions and Dandenong managed to handle the wet better than us and ran out winners by four goals. Better players for the day were: kAnglim was BOG with a solid effort in the midfi eld, The Better Godders battled hard all day, The Alpha Tribe competed very well in the ruck and around the ground, The other Kropfty pushed hard all day, Nev was prolifi c and STRONG TOM held up the defence #DoItForBirddogWoofWoof www.sfl.com.au | 43 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Under 19s: Up & About ST Pauls fought hard and grinded out a terrific win over Chelsea Heights at Beazley Reserve. The Heighters led at the main interval, but the Doggies slammed on 10 goals to three in the second half to run away with it. Tim Carracher was simply outstanding for St Pauls while big Jackson Fry was the lone hand up forward for the home side. At Beena Arena, Clayton put in one of their best performances for the year against the highly-fancied Murrumbeena. At no stage were they completely out of the contest, but Beena’s class ensured they got home by five goals. Cameron Rundell was best on for winners, while big man Jack Gavin put in a commanding performance for the Clays in spite of the tough conditions. Carrum Patterson Lakes fought / Will Hunter hard against Skye early, keeping them goalless in the opening quarter. But the Bombers lifted in front of the vocal home crowd and cruised home in the second half. Luke Bailey-Kohne was again terrific for Skye, as was Troy Jones for CPL. toss of the coin. I’m tipping Beena at home in a nail-biter. The final game was a disappointing one for finals aspirant Dingley – easily beaten by Bentleigh at the Den. Although Harry Thompson offered a lot of resistance, the Dingoes were never really in the hunt as the flag favourites put on a clinical display. Kade Heaphy-Wemyss earned himself best afield honours for Bentleigh. Hampton travels down to the Hangar to face the Bombers. The Hammers have been in good form and will be refreshed after last week’s bye, however, Skye are always tough to beat at home and I think they will get the points here. Headlining round 14 is the game of the round between Murrumbeena and St Pauls at Murrumbeena. These two sides are pretty evenly matched, and this one is really a Clayton’s draw doesn’t get much easier this week, up against Bentleigh at Bentleigh. I expect a similarly defiant performance from the Clays, but I don’t think they can topple the ladder leaders. The final game is Carrum Patterson Lakes and Dingley at Roy Dore Reserve. The Dingoes are three wins clear of sixth and a victory here will just about book them a finals berth. With that in back of their minds I think they will put in a big effort and bounce back from last week’s shocker. GET THE EDGE FOR YOUR TEAM. If there is 1 name synonymous with Dandenong Football Club, it is that of Michael Reid. He started with the club way back in 1984 in the Under-18’s, and has been here ever since, except for 1 season spent living in Perth. In that time he has racked up 499 games and is preparing to take the field this Saturday in game number 500. That he plays it against Hallam, the side he represents in the over 35’s competition, makes it all the more special. In his prime, Reid was a fleet footed wingman, being named there recently in Dandenong West’s Team of the 50 Years. He has played in back to back Reserves Premierships, and collected club and league best & fairests along the journey. At 46, his speed may have waned slightly, but his nous and desire to win the footy are still as strong as ever. You will have to go a long way to find a better bloke and clubman than Mick Reid. Always smiling and cheerful, he will be the first to welcome a new player to the club, and is down there bright and early every Saturday, marking the lines immaculately. If you had to describe ‘Reidy’ in 1 word, it’s a no brainer. Legend. The SFL community wish to acknowledge the contribution made to our league by one of our favourite whistle-blowers in Al Clement. Al joined the SFL in 1998 and has notched up 257 games including three Division 1 Grand Finals. Al has announced his retirement and will hold the ball in the air for the last time this saturday. Congratulations Al on what has been an inspirational career. www.sfl.com.au | 57 Strongest, Fittest & Fastest SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 s s s ,V\RXUFOXEORRNLQJIRUDQHGJHRQWKHRSSRVLWLRQ" 7U\WKHODWHVWLQ+LJK,QWHQVLW\)LWQHVV7UDLQLQJDQG JHWRIIWKHWUDLQLQJWUDFN 6HHKRZ\RXUFOXEVWDFNVXSDJDLQVWWKHRSSRVLWLRQ /RFNLQ\RXUFOXEV)5((WUDLQLQJVHVVLRQ YMCA Monash Fitness Centre $[[HVV&RUSRUDWH3DUN8QLW)RUVWHU5G0RXQW:DYHUOH\9,& TEPRQDVK#\PFDRUJDXWPRQDVK\PFDRUJDX 58 | SFL RECORD 2013 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Umpires Corner THERE are only a few running umpires who predate the merger of the ESCFA and the SFL back in 1992, and Neville Gardner, Alistair Clement and Peter Martin (four matches in 1988) are the only remaining umpires with ESCFA experience. “Big Al” is retiring this afternoon after umpiring his last game, and all umpires are invited to join him at Bentleigh to help him celebrate his distinguished umpiring career, which included three Div 1 Senior Grand Finals (2000, 2003 and 2008). Al commenced umpiring at the age of twelve in the ESCFA and umpired 116 games there including several grand finals with his dad Dave, who was a goalie. He then moved to the Yarra Valley and Mountain District League, where he took up field umpiring, and did so well that he was selected to trial with the VFL Development Squad. He rejoined the SFL in 1998 and has clocked up 257 games here (and 737 games in total) throughout his career. Al is a big KD Lang fan / The White Knight and once travelled 30kms on his bike just to be in a photo with her. The wet weather caused havoc with a number of matches last Saturday with many low scoring matches, and some of our younger umpires nearly suffering hypothermia. Borgie ended up prostrate in the mud during his match and the crowd gave him lots of advice about how he could extricate himself from the gluepot, while Al Clement, in his penultimate match, shortened to breaks between quarters at South Yarra and was under a hot shower by ten to four! At Skye, the football was about to sail through for a certain goal when it hit an overhanging tree branch and fell in the field of play. Play on!!!! At Dingley, Jack Francis was about to commence the Colts when the Dingley captain realised that both teams had lined up to kick towards the same goal. While Jack shivered in the middle, the Dingley players had to very quickly change ends Andrew Scott believes that he was appointed to the “Ladies Day” match at Dingley because the 180 ladies in attendance were looking for eye candy. Dream on, Andrew!! The Grand Final Appointments Night will be held from at 6.30pm on Wednesday September 18 at ‘Number Ninety’, 90 Atherton Road, Oakleigh. If you umpire during the finals, and cannot attend, you MUST provide a written apology to our President or Secretary a week prior to the event. Otherwise the cost will be deducted from your finals pays. Umpires who are not umpiring finals will need to pay the Association at least seven days before the function. Next month, we will celebrate the end of the home and away season with our “Last Supper” at the Highett RSL from 7.15pm on Thursday August 22. All umpires are invited back to Bricker Reserve this evening for free pizza and a drink, from 5.45pm onwards.
