ach year, our Annual Report gives us a chance to reflect about all the ways we have worked to meet the needs of the children in our
community.
This year, that reflection shines especially brightly. Going above and beyond a strong financial performance (page 16) and success of the
most ambitious philanthropic campaign in our history (page 18), 2012 set the stage for a whole new era of growth and innovation.

A Message from the CEO
W
hen we began 2012, we strengthened our dedication to be consistently excellent in service to our local community and selectively
distinctive at a national level in our clinical, research and education mission.
As you look over this Annual Report, I think you will share my sense of pride in the strides we have taken in accomplishing those goals.
In the research lab and at every patient’s bedside, we have taken every opportunity to look for new solutions, take action and make progress.
We will not rest because, as many of you know, when your child is hurt or sick, every moment counts.
At Rady Children’s, we believe that we have a duty – a covenant with
our community – to work smart, think more creatively, and embrace the
spirit of innovation that enables us to improve pediatric care.
Whether it is about technology, research, or where we open new
services – or how we offer one-on-one care to a family in a time of

This Report shows you some of the innovations we have celebrated during the last year. And, most importantly, what that pioneering spirit
means to the children and families in our care.
Our patients inspire us every day with their strength and courage – and their ability to find a smile. Little Anastasie Sagirah
Abboud was just 4 years old when she suffered a life-threatening head injury. In her time at the Hospital, Tasie was cared for
by five departments: Critical Care Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology and Cardiology. But Tasie was not the only
one receiving help. Her mom, Alexandra, explains:
“If there's a theme to our experience at Rady Children’s, it is one in which the needs of the whole family were met in subtle but
tangible ways. Once we knew she would survive, the uncertainty of whether Tasie would be the same child we knew and loved
before the accident was the great unspeakable monster in the room. It was watching her interact with her siblings while in the
craft room or listening to a musician sing a tune to the whole family that we caught glimpses of the old Tasie, our Tasie,
re-emerge from the little body that only two weeks before appeared alarmingly vacant.
“We will be forever grateful to the care, both past and ongoing, that Rady Children’s provides all our children.”

New Programs and Services
N
o other children’s hospital in California sees as many patients as Rady Children’s. That variety and volume help us stay sharp in every
specialty and subspecialty. It also allows us to be an engine of discovery, creating imaginative new breakthroughs and getting them to
the bedside more quickly. Ultimately, that means we are able to welcome more children and families, from the San Diego region and
beyond, through new and existing programs.
There is a common thread in all of these
innovations and achievements – an
unwavering commitment to the children
and families we serve every day.
Neuro NICU
The new Neuro NICU is focused on treating infants with neurological
issues in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the new Acute Care
Pavilion. Rady Children’s will be one of fewer than 10 NICUs in the
country with this service and the only one in Southern California.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services (CAPS)
Rady Children’s assumed operational responsibility for CAPS from UC San Diego in July; it moved to the main Hospital campus in late
February. CAPS is an acute care, 24-hour, seven-day-per-week facility focusing on crisis intervention, mental health assessments and
treatment of a wide array of mental health diagnoses.
Rady Children’s NICU in Murrieta
Just last November, an agreement between Rady Children’s and
Southwest Healthcare System opened the door for us to provide
neonatal care and expertise to the families of southwest Riverside
County at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta.
Rady Children’s at Rancho Springs Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
is an 11-bed unit outfitted with advanced instrumentation and the
latest technology to observe, monitor, stabilize or resuscitate
seriously ill newborns. Babies born at Rancho Springs and in need
of specialized care will now be able to stay close to their families.
The NICU joins Rady Children’s other outpatient services in
Murrieta, bringing the Rady Children’s experience and quality of
care to Riverside.

Motility and Mobility Program
Under the leadership of internationally renowned Dr. Neel Tipnis, the Move
It Center is one of the first programs in California to find specialized
solutions for patients with a variety of disorders, including gastrointestinal
issues, such as chronic pain and feeding intolerance.
Until now, patients had to travel either to the Midwest or the East Coast to
receive treatment for these conditions that could not be addressed by a
general gastroenterologist.
Medical West
San Diego’s first inpatient program for the treatment of eating disorders in children and adolescents, Medical West emphasizes the
importance of family involvement in recovery. The program’s unique approach and better outcomes are already attracting families from
across the country and around the world.
360 Sports Medicine
From little-league to college-level play, the new 360 Sports Medicine program is dedicated to keeping young
athletes in the game. It is the only program serving San Diego and Imperial counties to provide 360 degrees
of care – from preventing and treating injuries to helping improve the performance of young athletes.
Comprehensive, state-of-the-art care is provided by a multidisciplinary team, including sports medicine
specialists, concussion specialists, physical therapists, nutritionists and certified athletic trainers. Our team
works closely with young athletes' primary care physicians, other specialists, parents and coaches to help
them make a safe and rapid return to sports and activities.
Outpatient Procedure Center (OPC)
With the new Warren Family Surgical Center open in the new Acute Care Pavilion,
our former surgical suites have been redesigned to create this important new area.
The OPC provides services for procedures that may require anesthesia or sedation
but do not require a traditional operating room setting.

Children’s. “Providing heart transplants here
in San Diego will relieve the tremendous
burden that is placed on families who, until now, had no choice but to
travel long distances for care.”
More National Honors
In 2012, Dr. John Bradley, Infectious Disease Specialist at Rady
Children's, became one of seven experts from outside the federal
government who will join the National Biodefense Science Board, a
federal advisory committee which provides expert advice and guidance
on preventing, preparing for, and responding to adverse health effects of
public health emergencies.

Research and Technology
R
ady Children’s is dedicated to discovering treatments and cures for childhood diseases through cutting-edge research and the
development of new technologies. Our physician-scientists conduct clinical trials on the most promising treatments and one day hope to
sequence the DNA of every child who comes to us for care. Through this research, we will have a better understanding of the causes of
disease and the role of genetics and the environment. And the more we know about disease, the better we can treat it.
There are more than 170 clinical trials and 260 research projects underway at Rady Children’s in affiliation with UC San Diego School of
Medicine. New technology and equipment is being evaluated every day. Here is a sample of recent work:
Toshiba Catheterization Laboratory System
Rady Children’s Cardiology program continues to expand and improve its
services, recently installing a new Toshiba Catheterization Laboratory system
featuring better image quality and superior radiation safety. “We can do
everything with it that can be done anywhere in the world,” says Dr. John
Moore, Cardiology Division Chief and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at UC
San Diego. “As practitioners, there’s nothing better than being at a top-notch
facility. We’re very strong advocates for our patients, and we feel like this has
helped us provide better patient care.”
Autism Research
Dr. Joseph Gleeson and researchers at UC San Diego have identified
a rare, hereditary form of autism that may be treatable with
nutritional supplements. The scientists sequenced the genomes of six
children with both autism and epilepsy from three families — in each
case, the children’s parents were first cousins — and found that they
had mutations in a gene that normally prevents the breakdown of
certain amino acids.
“This might represent the first treatable form of autism,” says Dr.
Gleeson, “That is both heartening to families with autism, and also I
think revealing of the underlying mechanisms of autism.”
Dr. Gleeson is also a part of a team studying gene mutations that may
cause massive brain asymmetry, a condition frequently diagnosed in
children with severe epilepsy. This work could help lead to the
prevention of radical surgeries by treating the condition with drug
therapies.

SimBaby
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rady Children’s is among the first children’s hospitals in
the nation to purchase a “SimBaby,” an amazingly realistic doll that breathes, cries, gurgles and
can even turn blue. The technologically advanced doll can simulate a variety of medical
emergencies, including breathing difficulties and heart problems.
Huntington ’s Disease
UC San Diego School of Medicine and Rady Children's have identified two key regulatory
proteins critical to clearing away misfolded proteins that accumulate and cause the progressive,
deadly neurodegeneration of Huntington’s disease (HD). The findings explain a fundamental
aspect of how HD wreaks havoc within cells and provides “clear, therapeutic opportunities,”

Proton Therapy
Scripps Health and Rady Children’s are teaming up to provide advanced proton treatment to pediatric
cancer patients who need this highly accurate form of therapy for brain tumors. Proton beams allow for
significant sparing of normal tissue compared to X-ray therapy; their use has been shown to greatly
reduce the incidence of long-term complications in children.
Epic Electronic Medical Records
Rady Children’s has revolutionized the way we deliver health care by implementing the
technology and solutions offered by Epic systems. Electronic medical records are now available
anytime, anywhere on devices like tablets and smartphones. Every child has one medical

Volunteer Services
While we reach out the community, the community reaches right back! Our
volunteers contributed 45,810 hours this past year. That is the equivalent of a
$1,107,686 gift to Rady Children’s.
In 2012, Volunteer Services added yoga volunteers who teach classes for young
cancer patients at our Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Healing
Touch volunteers also offer their services throughout the Hospital.
The Chadwick Center for Children & Families
The Chadwick Center perfectly demonstrates Rady Children’s
dedication to being both a “home-town hospital” and an internationally
renowned pediatric medical center.
One of the Center’s many accomplishments in 2012 was providing
trauma counseling for more than 1,500 children and parents involved in child abuse, domestic violence or other forms of trauma. Each
counseling session is delivered with personalized compassionate care while being supported by proven research-based therapies.
On a broader scale, each January the Center hosts the San Diego International Conference on Child and Family Maltreatment, attracting
more than 2,000 professionals from around the world. This is the largest international event focused on the topic of on child abuse.

Center for Healthier Communities (CHC)
Rady Children’s CHC partners with organizations throughout San Diego to facilitate wellness
and advocacy programs. Its goal? To keep children from ever needing medical services at Rady
Children’s!
CHC’s 2012 success stories include:
• Expansion of the FACES for the Future program to 72 Hoover High School students,
providing hands-on experience and education about healthcare professions. The 15 graduating
seniors in 2012 all plan on continuing their education.
• The Partnership for Smoke-Free Families received the San Diego County Health and Human Services Department’s Public Health
Champion Award for facilitating a steady decrease in the percentage of pregnant women in the county who smoked at some point
during their first trimester.
• The Child Passenger Safety Program, sponsored by Kohl’s, inspected nearly 800 car seats and expanded community efforts to schools,
public health forums and health fairs.
Rethink Your Drink
Rethink Your Drink is an important initiative for both Rady
Children’s employees and our patient families, designed to educate
everyone making healthier drink choices. “Green” drinks, such as
water, 1% milk and unsweetened herbal teas, are always the best
choice for kids.
One sugar-sweetened soda a day? That is 40 pounds of sugar a
year, enough to fill this wheelbarrow!

U.S. News & World Report Honors
10 for 10 – Again!
We are pleased to report that U.S. News & World Report has
once again ranked Rady Children’s among the top children’s
hospitals in the nation in all 10 pediatric specialties it surveyed.
With more than 200 hospitals in the United States, these
rankings place Rady Children’s among the nation’s elite.
Orthopedics: #2
Pulmonology: #22
This is the highest ranking ever for Rady Children’s. Orthopedics’
overall score was 99.2 out of 100 – that’s only eight-tenths of a
percent less than the number one ranked hospital. More than 50
percent of orthopedic specialists surveyed named Rady Children’s as
one of the best.
Our Pulmonology division was the only one in the country to
achieve a perfect score for success in minimizing bloodstream,
ventilator associated pneumonia, and other infections in pediatric
ICU patients.
Urology: #9
Neurology and Neurosurgery: #27
Urology moved up four rankings from last year – breaking into the
top 10 for the first time and scoring among the top four ranked
hospitals in Urology for “success in preventing surgical
complications.”
Moving up 10 places from last year’s rankings, Neurology and
Neurosurgery achieved the highest possible score in two categories:
1) survival following surgery for disorders or procedures including
brain tumors, medically-untreatable epilepsy and head trauma and 2)
success in treating infants and children with epilepsy.
Nephrology: #17
Cardiology: #28
Nephrology made the biggest jump of all 10 specialties ranked –
moving up 12 places from last year’s ranking. The specialty
achieved the highest possible score for percentage of patients
without complications following a kidney biopsy procedure.
Improving its rankings by two places over last year, Cardiology was
ranked among the top six hospitals in the nation for survival
following moderately complex to extremely difficult heart surgery in
the past two years.
Diabetes and Endocrinology: #20
Gastroenterology: #30
Diabetes and Endocrinology outscored the top-ranked hospital
(Children’s Philadelphia) for success in preventing serious problems
in children with Type 1 diabetes and keeping blood levels in check.
Gastroenterology moved up one spot from last year’s rankings,
receiving a score of “Superior” for Overall Infection Prevention and
for success in minimizing bloodstream infections.
Neonatology: #21
Cancer: #37
In nurse-patient ratio, Neonatology ranked #1, outscoring every
other children’s hospital in the survey. It also achieved the highest
score possible for the number and variety of Advanced Clinical
Services available.
Our Cancer program received a higher than average score for
survival of patients receiving stem cell transplants at 100 days
following a bone marrow transplant and received a ranking of
“Superior” for success in minimizing bloodstream infections.

More Honors from U.S. News & World Report
For the fourth consecutive year, the Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children
at Rady Children’s was named to the Honor Roll in U.S News & World Report’s annual
Best Nursing Homes. Our Center was one of 39 nursing homes with perfect performance
ratings. With 15,500 facilities nationwide, the honor places the Bernardy Center among the
nation’s elite.
This year, the Center also moved into its new home in the Nelson Pavilion at the Hospital.
The beautifully redesigned spaces offer more amenities for these very special patients and
their families.
Most Wired
In 2012, Rady Children’s was recognized as one of the nation’s “Most Wired,”
according to the results of the 2012 Most Wired Survey released in the July issue
of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. This is in recognition of Rady
Children’s commitment to focus on expanding and adopting IT that protects
patient data and optimizes patient flow and communications.
Peak Award
In demonstration of Rady Children’s commitment to being the healthcare Employer of Choice in San Diego, the Patient Access Trainers
received the 2012 PEAK Award from the San Diego chapter of the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD). ASTD San
Diego honors organizations that exemplify Performance Excellence and Applied Knowledge. The team created easily accessed eLearning
courses to help our Patient Access Representatives properly register patients, reducing denied insurance claims and potentially preventing an
annual loss of $8 million. The courses include interactive online learning with system demonstrations, “test your knowledge questions” and
a final exam.

Financial Responsibility
Rady Children’s is dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality pediatric healthcare to our community by investing in patient care
programs, cutting-edge equipment and technology and modernizing and expanding facilities.
Operating income of $85.4 million for fiscal year 2012 was an all-time record high, with $49.4 million attributable to the provider fee
program. Total operating revenue and expenses increased by approximately 5.5 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively, in 2012. Although the
volumes in 2012 were unexpectedly lower at the start of the fiscal year, stringent expense management measures positively impacted
operating results.
Rady Children’s continues to maintain a strong credit rating and capital position, and completed a $100 million debt offering in November
2011. Additionally, due to Rady Children’s ongoing investment in Epic electronic medical record software, the Hospital and many
physicians qualified for government electronic health record incentive payments, of which Rady Children’s received $6.5 million in 2012.
We maintain our commitment to fiscal excellence and responsibility while remaining equally committed to being the safety net for the
children in our community. Last year, in fact, 56.6 percent of our patients had little or no private medical insurance. But each received
the same outstanding care.

• 60,105 emergency care visits to the Sam S. and Rose Stein Emergency Care Center.
• 39,351 urgent care visits.
• Nearly 1,100 trauma patients.
• 222,574 outpatient visits, including 57,800 visits to our orthopedics clinics.
• 21,132 surgeries, including nearly 500 heart surgeries in the Warren Family Surgical Center.
• 15,911 inpatient admissions.
• 200 newly diagnosed cancer patients and 15,000 visits to the Viterbi Outpatient Clinic
in the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
• More than 280 children evaluated in our Autism Discovery Institute.
• 1,500 children and parents involved in child abuse, domestic violence and other
forms of trauma who were provided counseling through our Chadwick Center for
Children & Families.
• 730 infants cared for at Rady Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU);
more than 480 infants at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas and
Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla; and more than 350 infants at
Palomar Medical Center.

or Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation, the most
important accomplishment of 2012 was the successful
completion of The Campaign for Rady Children’s.
Thanks to an extraordinary
outpouring of giving from
every corner of San Diego,
Rady Children’s
announced in July that this
ambitious effort to raise
$220 million to care for the sick
and injured children of San Diego by
December 2012, had reached its goal six months early.
Through the Campaign, Rady Children’s was able to
complete our Acute Care Pavilion, home to the Peckham
Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, the Warren Family
Surgical Center, the Viterbi Outpatient Clinic and Carley's Magical Gardens.
The Campaign also supported Rady Children’s efforts to provide the most comprehensive care and advanced technology, and support
discovery through research and teaching.
Over the course of the Campaign, we received more than 5.2 million gifts, from $1 to $60 million, demonstrating the wide range of support
we have from a huge cross section of our community.
Our community was so giving that the Foundation established a stretch goal to raise an additional $5 million by December 31, 2012.
We are proud to announce our final total for the Campaign for Rady Children’s is $229,034,143 – the largest fundraising campaign
in the history of Rady Children’s.

Paying it Forward
The Lee Family
S
oon after little Bennett Lee was born, his parents sensed their baby was seriously ill,
although symptoms were vague. Finally, at a 4-month checkup, an X-ray showed a loop of
intestine in front of Bennett’s heart.
The family immediately headed to Rady Children’s, where pediatric surgeon Dr. Timothy
Fairbanks determined that Bennett had been born with a hole in his diaphragm. Dr. Fairbanks
performed delicate laparoscopic surgery to move the intestine back into place and repair the
tiny diaphragm.
Three days later, Bennett was home and on his way to a full recovery.
“It was a remarkable surgery,” says Dr. David Lee, Bennett’s grandfather and a retired physician. ”It was apparent that had it been left another week or two
this could have been life-threatening. We were enormously grateful, not just to the doctor but to the nurses and support staff for the care Bennett received.”
The family has expressed its appreciation with a $50,000 gift to the Hope and Healing Fund, dedicated to Rady Children’s highest and most urgent needs.
More than half of children treated at Rady Children’s have little or no private health insurance, and the fund provides for their care during serious illness or
injury. The family wanted to help others facing a similar emergency but without the resources to take care of it.
The gift comes from grandparents Dr. and Mrs. David and Sandra Lee and Karen and Daniel Hernandez, as well as parents Kimberly and Benjamin Lee.
“Bennett is now just over a year old, and he’s a happy, healthy, delightful little boy,” Dr. Lee says. “We couldn’t be happier.”

Keeping Children Safe

D
aniel and Martha Addalee Jacobson loved children, although they were
unable to have their own. When Addalee died in 2000, Dan decided to
honor her memory with a celebration tile installed at Rady Children’s. He also
became a Legacy Circle member, making the Hospital the sole beneficiary of
his $2 million estate.
Supervising fire safety projects at Navy and Air Force
installations, his top secret clearance allowed him to
work on programs such as the Minuteman ballistic
missile system and the global network of military satellite facilities. As a
consultant, he helped create a landmark guide in earthquake disaster response.
The decision was characteristic of Dan, who devoted much of his own life to
safeguarding the lives of others. A Chicago native, in 1942 he became a
commissioned officer in the Naval Reserve, serving in the Pacific during World
War II. Following a distinguished 35-year career in the Reserve as a
professional engineer in fire protection and loss prevention, Dan worked as a
fire safety consultant.
In 2001, Dan wrote a Hospital administrator about his gift to Rady Children’s.
He and Addalee first met in Chicago but fell in love after meeting again in San
Diego in 1945. They soon married and made San Diego home, although Dan’s
work often took him away.
“I firmly believe that Children’s Hospital is performing a very significant
service in improving healthcare in our society,” he wrote, “and I feel privileged
to take part in your endeavors.”
Dan died in December, 2011. Through his generosity, his contribution to
children’s health lives on.

Outstanding Corporate Miracle Maker: Cricket Communications
Most Creative Miracle Maker: Sharla and Michael Hank
Since 2009, Cricket Communications has donated nearly
$1.4 million to Rady Children’s through their annual charity golf
tournament. Funds from these tournaments have benefited, among
others, the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders,
Developmental Services, the Orthopedic Department. Going above
and beyond in another way, Cricket Communications has
introduced new donors to the Hospital and helped them in their
fundraising efforts.
Sharla and Michael Hank help celebrate World Down Syndrome
Day in March by hosting an indoor rock climbing fundraising
event called “Climbing to New Heights for Down Syndrome.” And
they reach new heights in other creative ways, too, hosting the
“Merry All Comedy Ball,” a charity comedy show and “A Ride of
Inspiration,” a charity motorcycle ride/poker run. All told, the
Hanks have raised more than $140,000 for the Down Syndrome
Center at Rady Children's.
Outstanding Community Miracle Maker: The Sycuan Band of
the Kumeyaay Nation
Junior Miracle Maker: Patrick Ivison
Sycuan has supported the Hospital for more than 20 years, donated
more than $550,000 to support the Peckham Center for Cancer and
Blood Disorders and the Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear
Drive fund. In true community spirit, Sycuan has also been a
wonderful supporter of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary
(pages 28-29), donating venue space and auction items.
Patrick Ivison began his relationship with Rady Children’s as a
patient. Now, he is an avid supporter of Rady Children’s, lending
time to events such as AJ’s Crane, donor and staff meetings,
Radiothon, and fundraising events. He also chooses to spend his
own time visiting patients at the Hospital that are being treated for
injuries similar to his own. Patrick exemplifies the importance of
being a young leader and reminds us all that no matter the size of
the task, big or small, it can always be accomplished with
perseverance.

ady Children's Hospital Auxiliary has been making a difference in the health and well-being of children since 1953 – one full year
before the Hospital first opened its doors.
Ever since, this dedicated group of volunteers has strived to help Rady Children’s meet each new challenge. Today, more than 1,200
volunteers continue to support Rady Children’s through fundraising efforts, advocacy and education.
How You Can Get Involved
There are three fun and satisfying ways to support the Auxiliary:
Celebrate!
Make a gift to the Honoring, Remembrance and Celebration Fund to express gratitude or commemorate those people who have touched and
enriched our lives. Those being honored will have their names beautifully handwritten in the Book of Honoring or Book of Remembrance,
displayed in Rady Children’s Rose Pavilion. Celebration Tiles are tribute gifts that are also available for contributions totaling $5,000 or
more. These 8” x 8” tiles are designed by the donor and displayed in the Rose Pavilion for patients and their families to see every day.

UT Kids’ NewsDay One Dollar. One Paper. One Day.
In fiscal year 2012, this special edition of the daily paper, featuring heartwarming and
inspiring stories about our patients, raised more than $100,000 for Rady Children’s.
Last year, on October 23, thousands of volunteers again hit the streets selling more
than 42,500 papers and collecting more than $100,000 in donations. New records
were set with papers sold at more than 350 locations, including 157 San Diego
Starbucks, and more than 1,700 volunteers participating.
More than 35,000 people skated through the
holidays last year, with all proceeds benefiting
the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood
Disorders. Now in its 16th year, Rady
Children’s Fantasy on Ice has become San
Diego’s most celebrated winter tradition.

Charity Ball
It seems fitting to end this year’s Annual Report with a song! Since
1909, the Charity Ball has been an integral part of the social and
philanthropic fabric of San Diego, beginning each year with the Blue
Danube waltz.
In 2012, the 103rd Anniversary Charity Ball, Spectacular San Diego
raised more than $260,000 to benefit the Rady Children’s Trauma
Center at the Sam S. and Rose Stein Emergency Care Center.

February 16, 2013 at the Hotel del Coronado and benefited the Peckham
Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s.
