FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your commitment to making this area the best place to
live, work and grow. 2011 has been a year of success for Great Rivers
United Way. Because of our devoted volunteers, the tremendous
generosity of our donors, and the tireless efforts of our enthusiastic
staff, we continued to meet the needs of our neighbors in Houston, La
Crosse, Monroe, Trempealeau and Vernon Counties.
2012 COMPASS NOW was initiated to assess the needs of those we serve in our 5 county
region. A special thank you must be extended to Dr. Brenda Rooney and Diana
DiazGranados, who spearheaded the project. A sincere thank you must also be extended to
all partners of this project.
In 2011, we welcomed our new President, James Falvey. Under his leadership and with the
support of a dedicated Board of Directors, operational systems were enhanced, agency
partnerships were strengthened, critical community relationships were tended to, and a
new strategic planning process was initiated.
Finally, Sam Van Riper, our 2011 Campaign Chair, championed another record breaking
campaign. Thank you, Sam, for your endless energy and dedication which allows us to
achieve our mission and move closer to our vision.
As we roll into 2012, I am excited for the incoming Board Chair, Jon Trapp. Jon has been an
active United Way volunteer for almost two decades. His knowledge, understanding and
experience will help lead us through very exciting, yet anxious times. He will help address
the needs of our communities in innovative ways.
It has been a privilege to serve as the Board Chair. I look forward to continuing to support
the work of the United Way with you, as we LIVE UNITED, sharing our time, talent and
resources to meet the needs of those we serve.
Sincerely,
Sarah Havens

A MESSAGE FROM UNITED WAY’S PRESIDENT
Dear Great Rivers United Way Investor,
Thank you.
Because of your investment in our community through United Way you
are making our region a better place to live, work and play.
Through United Way’s community needs assessment, known as 2012 COMPASS NOW, and
our Partner Agency certification process, you can be certain that your investment is placed
into programs that have the greatest impact.
Your investment stay local. We have a panel of volunteers that help us allocate the money to
our partner agencies in a way that makes sure that your investment is properly given to life
changing programs. This volunteer panel consists of your friends and neighbors. This year
we had over 100 community members volunteer their time to make sure United Way
allocates money in a way that will best serve our region’s needs.
Thank you again for being such an important part of our community!
James Falvey, President

COMPASS NOW
COMPASS NOW 2012 is a review of community needs in the five-county Great Rivers Region.
The report provides valuable information and presents the results of data collected through
a community survey, focus groups, an extensive review of socio-economic indicators, and
an inventory of community resources.
The COMPASS NOW 2012 Report serves as an important resource for the community by
providing updated data to measure progress, monitor trends, and further prioritize efforts
to improve the quality of life for all residents in the Great Rivers Region. Key issues
affecting the region are identified in the areas of Health, Education, Income and
Community.

COMMUNITY SERVICES
Letter Carrier’s Food Drive
For more than 18 years, Great Rivers United
Way has partnered with Local Branch 59 of the
National Association of Letter Carriers to
conduct the largest community food drive in
our area. On May 14, more than 50 volunteers
spent an entire day loading large trucks with
food that the Letter Carrier’s picked up on
their routes. The food was weighed and sent
to seven local food pantries that serve
thousands of people in need throughout the

netting 6,000 pounds of food 18 years ago has
grown into a drive bringing in more than 100,400 pounds of food!

CAMPAIGN
Thanks to you, this has been a great year for the Great Rivers United Way’s fundraising
efforts. Sam Van Riper of Trane Company was the Campaign Chair for the 2011-2012
campaign. Many efforts were made to ensure another successful campaign season. With
more programs needing support than ever before, the need for another successful
campaign was higher than ever.
Throughout 2011, we continued to increase our visibility in outlying counties. Associated
Bank was kind enough to offer us office space in Vernon County for the second year in a
row. Our expanded efforts to increase visibility in outlying counties were aided by
significant meetings at Toro in Monroe County, and Ace Communications in Houston
County. We are continuing to set up meetings with companies and local governments in our
outlying counties to best serve our communities.
Each year our campaign begins with a Pacesetter Campaign. Pacesetter companies commit
to running a successful campaign in August, and their success motivates other companies
to do the same. Thank you to the 2011-2012 Pacesetter Companies.

CAMPAIGN
With continued efforts from United Way staff and a motivated campaign chair and cabinet,
we were able to reach out to more companies and speak at more employee meetings than
ever before. All the hard work paid off because United Way raised $2,015,570.39, the most
money ever. On behalf of the entire campaign department, thank you to all the community
members who participated.
A special thank you to our event sponsors:

Our campaign was a true definition of why our community is such a special place. As we move
forward to 2012, it is our hope that community members will continue to support United Way. Our
goal will not get accomplished without the continued support from companies and individuals in
our 5 county region.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
Great Rivers United Way’s Community Investment Process empowers people who live or
work in our community to help invest your contributions where they matter most.
Volunteers from schools, companies, churches, and neighborhoods ask in-depth questions
about programs to determine financial health, client outcomes and areas in need of
improvement. This year, funding recommendations were made by a record number of 100
volunteers who participated in the process. Volunteers work independently to review
programs and then they meet in small group panels to discuss their reviews and make
recommendations about programs.
Once the panels have met and discussed their programs, the teams make
recommendations for funding to the United Way Fund Distribution Steering Committee.
This year, the Fund Distribution Steering Committee spent two days reviewing
recommendations for 75 programs from 28 agencies. The Committee then makes a
recommendation for funding to the United Way Board of Directors. The result of this process
is an assurance that donor contributions are spent wisely, and in a manner that has
maximum positive impact on the people of our local community.
We owe a big THANKS to Gundersen Lutheran, who graciously opened their Onalaska and
Green Bay Street buildings for training sessions and Community Investment Panel
meetings. We would also like to thank Culver’s in Onalaska for generously donating
delicious dinner for our panel volunteers. This process would not be possible without the
help of our dedicated and motivated volunteers. THANK YOU to all our volunteers! You truly
are making a difference in our community.

TRUE STORIES OF LIVING UNITED
Natalie
Amanda was a mother of one young child and pregnant with her second.
What was thought to be a normal pregnancy was anything but. When
Natalie was born, she was diagnosed with Myelomeningocele (a severe
form of Spina Bifida). Immediately after her birth, she was transferred to
Meriter Hospital in Madison, where within 24 hours she had two major
surgeries. 28 of Natalie’s first 56 days of life were spent in the hospital.
In her 2 years of life, Natalie has already had a total of 11 surgeries.
Natalie is paralyzed from the waist down, and will struggle with the
effects of her birth defects the rest of her life.
Natalie will continue to have surgeries throughout her life, but given all of the medical
issues that Natalie has been born with, you would be hard pressed to find a little girl who is
more happy, fun, and cares about others. She can currently say her alphabet, count, has a
full vocabulary and likes to repeat anything she hears. Natalie receives physical therapy
through Coulee Children’s Center. A physical therapist comes to their house once a week
and thanks to their help, she can roll over, sit up, and army crawl!
Carol
Carol, a handicapped mother with 6 children is on a set income,
which is below the federal poverty level. She struggles having
enough income to cover all her basic household needs. Carol utilizes
some of the programs that Couleecap, a United Way Partner Agency,
has to offer. She receives help through the home energy program,
which assists Carol with her energy bills (heat and electric). Carol
also receives help through the food pantry at Couleecap, which
assists with her family’s nutritional needs.
Carol may need help from agencies such as Couleecap, but she also
loves helping others in our community. Carol has volunteered for the
past 15 years with Couleecap. She assists with the food pantry by
registering clients, tracking the number of households served, and assisting with bagging
and weighing of food when needed. Carol recently connected with Couleecap’s Drug Free
Communities program, volunteering to be a parent representative as a member of the Drug
Free Prevention Coalition.
Investing in the lives of community members like Carol is important. When people like Carol
know that their basic needs will be met, they can spend their time finding ways to impact
the community in positive ways.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THESE STORIES POSSIBLE! THANK YOU FOR LIVING UNITED!

VOLUNTEER CENTER
United Way is working to advance the common good and our Volunteer Center is one of the
ways that you can join the movement. We need the heads, hands and hearts of committed
people to help us tackle the problems facing our community. Great Rivers United Way is
committed to linking volunteers with opportunities to enrich their lives and the community.
The Volunteer Center works with volunteers and local nonprofits to develop the best
opportunities for youth, busy working adults and seniors to serve. Whether it is important
to a volunteer to help children achieve their potential, help families become financially
stable, or advance a worthy cause, the Volunteer Center can help find an opportunity that is
closest to the heart.
The Great Rivers United Way Volunteer Center:
•
Connects volunteers with opportunities they are passionate about
•
Provides a safe, reliable way for local agencies to recruit volunteers
•
Promotes volunteerism and the raises awareness of the value of volunteers
•
Links products to agency needs
•
Provides support for agencies seeking volunteers
When you give of yourself, you have the ability to make a dramatic impact on the life of
another. Whether you can give an hour, or give a Saturday, you can literally change people's
lives for the better by volunteering. Visit www.gruw.org to explore the Volunteer Center and
find opportunities to create lasting change in our community.
We are all united. When you reach out a hand to one, you influence the condition of all. To
all who have joined hands, opened your hearts, and lent your muscle, we thank you! We
could not work toward a stronger community without the time and talents of dedicated
volunteers.

COMPASS NOW
COMPASS NOW 2012 is a review of community needs in the five-county Great Rivers Region.

We
could not work toward a stronger community without the time and talents of dedicated
volunteers.
