GRAB E R ® 2 Effective August 2006 THE GRABER WOOD STORY QUALITY OF WOOD DEFINES A SHUTTER’S QUALITY SPRINGS FABRICATION AND FINISHING, REYNOSA, MEXICO We use only 100% North American hardwood in the construction of our wood shutters because of its light weight, consistent color, hardness, structural stability, and attractive grain. At our state-of-the art finishing plant in Reynosa, Mexico, components are carefully sorted prior to fabrication for color uniformity and wood characteristics. We sort wood as an end user, rather than a finishing vendor, taking out defects in a climate-controlled building. Each shutter is hand-made by craftsmen to your client’s custom needs. To finish the shutter, we use only high quality paints and stains; on-site certified color technicians provide both application and quality control. SOUND FORESTRY TECHNIQUES We work only with foresters who practice “sustained yield forest management” – nearly twice as much hardwood grows as is harvested in the U.S. each year. The volume of hardwoods in American forests today is 90% larger than it was 50 years ago. WHAT MAKES GRABER TRADITIONS SHUTTERS DIFFERENT FROM THE REST? • Wood shutters are made from 100% North American Hardwoods – the premier wood used in the construction of shutters PRESERVING OUR NATURAL RESOURCES Springs Wood Products consume recycled sawdust and wood shavings, generating the heat required to dry lumber, for a completely self-sufficient manufacturing process. Our Reynosa, Mexico, fabrication and finishing facility is 99.7% pollution free, above any U.S. standard. • Springs Wood Products and Finishing facilities provide state-of-the-art technologies and processes • Expanded choice of finishes with PureGrain™ Finish – vibrant stains that showcase the natural grain of the wood • Offer the only national Custom Color Match program in the industry – color choices that no one has ever seen in custom wood shutters before SPRINGS WOOD PRODUCTS, GRAYLING, MICHIGAN We have control over the quality of wood used – we control the process from green lumber to finished shutters. Hardwoods used in crafting Graber wood shutters are kiln dried and moulded at our Springs Wood Products facility in Grayling, Michigan. The wood is dried slowly to strict wood shutter specifications, because structural change can occur when moisture is removed. Moulding and sanding operations provide the highest quality surface, free of defects. • An outstanding selection of styles, louvers (including 4½" size), frames and arches • The best Customer Service team in the industry-trained to answer any questions about Graber Traditions Shutters • Limited Lifetime Warranty 3 GRABER ® Effective August 2006 GRABER WOOD CHARACTERISTICS GRABER WOOD CHARACTERISTICS Wood used to manufacture Graber wood shutters has many natural characteristics which make it truly unique… no two pieces of hardwood are alike. The following are all natural characteristics of wood and we do not consider them to be defects: • Grain – The direction, size, and appearance of wood fibers vary greatly depending on where the wood is cut from within the tree • Burl – Formed from an irregular growth on the outer edge of the tree • Bird’s Eye – Small area on the surface of the board where fibers are contorted to form circular figures that resemble birds’ eyes • Knots – Vary in size, shape, structure and color • Mineral Marks – Dark or discolored area caused by minerals which the tree extracts from the soil; can be either a streak or a stain, usually blackish blue Flat Grain Grain Change Natural variations in color and grain effect are inherent in the beauty of wood. These variations are within established industry guidelines and should be expected. In addition, shutters may stain slightly darker or lighter than the samples shown. Mineral Marks Tiger Striping Burl/Bird’s Eye Knots GRAB E R ® 4 Effective August 2006 GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION PRODUCT ELEMENTS Use this information to educate your client on the process of having Graber Traditions™ Shutters custom made for their home. Divider Rails: Divider rails are used to provide additional support and light control. Can be ordered as an option to create a double hung look or for decorative effect. MOUNTING Window Molding: Shutter frames can be installed around, on top of, or in place of existing window molding. Shutter panels over 72" tall (45" for 1¼" louver) or 30" wide will have a divider rail installed at the center of the panel (21⁄2" or 31⁄2" louver +/- 11⁄2"; 41⁄2" louver +/- 2") unless specified on the order form. Panels over 30" wide and 78" high require two divider rails. Divider rails may be ordered on panels less than 72". Divider rails require at least two louvers in each section. Maximum number of divider rails is two. • Mounting around molding – The frame height needs to project enough to allow for louver operation (see page 11) • Mounting on molding – The molding needs to be flat enough (installation onto wood molding only) so the frame will sit plumb and level, and wide enough to allow a screw to be driven through it without splitting the wood 1¼" and 2½" louvers will have 2" wide divider rails. 3½" and 4½" louvers will have 3" wide divider rails. Rabbet Stile: Used when two stiles meet, this feature creates a built in light block. • Mounting in place of existing molding – The shutter frame selected must be wide enough to cover the same areas as the molding that is removed Tilt Bar: The factory will position the tilt bar in the center of each panel. Windowsills: An existing windowsill may offer a decorative element to a room. Shutters can be customized to work with the windowsill. Hide-A-Tilt™ Hidden Tilt Bar: Tilt mechanism in the back of the shutter panel rather than the front. • Outside mounts – L-frame may be ordered 4-sided Color Disclaimer: Due to the natural characteristics of wood, colors may vary slightly. To ensure proper color matches, shutters being mounted in the same room should be ordered at one time. Slight variations in color may also occur between the finished product and the color samples/literature. or 4-sided inverted with a sill frame installed on the windowsill • Inside mounts – Hang strip, direct mount, and Z-frame are available T-Post Frame Stile Top Rail* Louver Mouse Hole Single Panel Divider Rail Bi-Fold Bottom Rail* Tilt Bar * Top and Bottom Rail heights will vary. See page 25 for definitions. 5 GRABER ® Effective August 2006 SHUTTER TYPES Bi-Fold Track System: Two or four panels are hinged together with a top and bottom track. Standard Panel: A rectangular shaped panel that can be installed using any frame style. Bi-Fold: Two panels are hinged together that fold together to lay flush. Bypass Track System: Shutter panels slide on a top track to open and close. The track system can be attached to a frame or mounted directly to a window casing or the ceiling. The most common approach is a 3-sided box out (see page 20) with floor guides. Louvers must be closed to slide on track. Required clearance 1⁄8". 2½" Louver The most traditional and widely used louver size; minimal window depth needed; shutters become the focal point of the room. Required clearance 3⁄4". 3½" Louver Offers more visibility and light control than a smaller louver; allows design flexibility when working with space around shutter. Required clearance 1¼". 4½" Louver Provides the greatest amount of visibility through the open louvers; looks most proportionate in a larger window; view beyond the window becomes more important – louvers almost disappear when open. Required clearance 13⁄4". LOUVER COMPARISON 11⁄4" Louver 21⁄2" Louver 31⁄2" Louver 9 41⁄2" Louver GRABER ® Effective August 2006 HIDDEN TILT Hide-A-Tilt™ Hidden Tilt Option offers the tilt mechanism in the back of the shutter panel, eliminating the traditional tilt bar and creating an unobstructed view as well as a clean lineal appearance. A thin stainless steel tilt bar is attached to the louvers in the rear of the panel. Operation of the shutter is as simple as positioning one louver into position; all of the other louvers will follow. GRAB E R ® Available on standard shutters, French doors, Bi-Fold or Bypass with 2½" and 3½" louvers. To measure for a Hide-A-Tilt use the traditional measuring procedure (page 12), plus check for additional ½" clearance in the back of the shutter. 10 Effective August 2006 CLEARANCE FOR LOUVERS 1-3/4 1-1/4 3/4 1-1/4 2-1/2 3-1/2 4-1/2 1.0 Louver Depth Clearance Size Limitations Panel Size Limitation: SHEFFIELD MINIMUM DESCRIPTION MAXIMUM 11⁄4" 21⁄2"/31⁄2" 41⁄2" 11⁄4" 21⁄2"/31⁄2"/41⁄2" Single Panel Width (Regular) 8" 10" 10" 18" 36" Single Panel Width (Bi-Fold) 8" 10" 10" 18" 26" Panel Height 15" 15" 20" 96" 120"* Bi-Fold Track System Width N/A 10" N/A N/A 208"*! Use the smallest width and height measurements. Confirm that the window is square. Measure the diagonals. If the difference between the two measurements is greater than ¼", an outside mount shutter is required. OK Not OK Frame to Frame Measurement (Outside Mount L-Frame Only) Place a sample of the L-frame on the window frame or wall to determine frame-to-frame placement. Measure frame-to-frame width at three points and frame to frame height at three points. Use the largest width and height measurements. NOTE: At least 13⁄4" flat surface is needed on each side of the window for an L-Frame. GRAB E R ® 12 Effective August 2006 SPECIFYING DIVIDER RAIL LOCATION For frame to frame shutter measurement, measure from the bottom of the frame to the center point of the divider rail location. For window opening measurements, measure from the sill or the bottom of the window opening. 13 GRABER ® Effective August 2006 PANEL CONFIGURATIONS STANDARD AND BI-FOLD PANEL Single Panel L R Two Panels LR LTL RTR LL LTR RR Three Panels LTLR LTLTR LRTR LTRTR LLR LRR LLTR LTRR Four Panels LTLRTR LRTLR LLRR LTRTLTR LLTRR Six Panels LRTLRTLR GRAB E R ® LTRTLTRTLTR LTLLRRTR LTLLTRRTR LLTLRTRR LLTLTRTRR 14 Effective August 2006 SPECIALTY SHUTTERS Perfect Arch 1. Add trim or molding to the width and height of the opening of the window. The stackback option allows for the shutter panels to clear the window opening, creating an unobstructed view. Measure only the frame to frame area for outside mount with stackback. Factory will calculate the correct stackback needed. General Guidelines for Stackback: Use the formulas below to estimate the minimum additional space needed. Submit frame to frame measurement only, do not include additional width needed. Factory will calculate the additional frame length needed. Louvers – The movable fins inside the shutter panel. Mouse Hole – Recess in the top rail of the panel that the lift rod rests in when the louvers are completely closed. Bi-Fold Track System – Two or more hinged panels on a track. Panels do not lay flush against the window or wall. Outside Mount – A shutter that is mounted on the outside Bypass Track System – of an opening. Box Out Frame – Panel – The part of the shutter that consists of a set of louvers, two rails and two stiles. Two or more panels on an overhead track that slide and pass each other. Track system frame option that creates an outside mount application consisting of a three-sided frame with or without a decorative valance. Rabbet Stile – A special cut on the stiles that allow the panels to overlap. Helps control light penetration between the panels. Café Style Shutters – Shutter covers the lower portion of an opening. They can be made to any height within product specifications. Direct Mount – Rails – The top and bottom solid portion of a panel that frames the louvers. Mounting the shutter panels directly to the Square Window – window casing. Diagonal measurements must be within ¼" difference. Windows that are not square will need to have the shutter mounted to the outside of the window opening. Divider Rail – A rail that divides the shutter panel into two horizontal sections. It is used to add strength to a tall panel or add a decorative touch. Stackback – Configuration that allows the panels of the bypass or bi-fold track system to completely slide beyond the window opening. Double Mouse Hole – Recess on the top and bottom rail allowing for the louvers to be completely closed in either direction. Stile – The vertical portion of the panel frame that the louvers are anchored to. Guide – Component part used with bypass configurations to lead the panels so that they do not project into the room. Strike Off – Sample color swatch to be approved prior to the production of the order. Hang Strip – The mounting frame that is used for inside mounted shutter panels. Inside Mount – Tilt Bar – A vertically mounted bar located on the front of the shutter used to open and close the louvers. A shutter that is mounted on the inside of T-Post – an opening. A vertical post that divides the panel into two sections (used with wider shutters). Light Block – Square rail that blocks light between the window sill and the shutter panel, used with inside mount, 2sided frame and 3-sided frames. Window Depth – The distance from the surface of the wall to the closest part of the window (examples: latch, crank, frame, etc.). 25 GRABER ® Springs Window Fashions Middleton, WI www.graberblinds.com 19-0063-01 (8/06) 60273
