UP / Metra West Line project
Historical Context and Objectives
• Original Agreement in 2008
• Developed jointly by UP and Metra
• 3 of 4 phases are funded and almost complete
• Addresses a shared fluidity problem on the West
Line (UP Geneva sub)
• Reduces gate down time in West Line communities
• Significant reduction in idling trains
• Preserves Metra Performance as freight traffic grows
• Eliminate commuter curfews for freight trains
• Makes Geneva sub capabilities = BNSF Aurora sub
• Estimated Project Costs increased as additional
design and engineering completed

UP/Metra West Line Project
Station Safety Improvements
• Complete Pedestrian Gate coverage
– On Road or Ped crossings adjacent to platforms
• End of Platform Diversions
– Channel commuter flow away from tracks
– Eliminate mid platform pedestrian crossings
– Direct flows behind pedestrian gates
• Another Train Warning System
– Alert commuters that a 2nd train is entering station
– Prevent unsafe behavior
• Inter Track Fencing
– Extensions beyond platform areas
– Address flows from parking areas
• 3 New Commuter Grade Separations
UP/Metra West Line Project
Station Improvements – Another Train Warning Sign (ATW Sign)
52 devices installed at 8 stations to date
Operating Scenario
When either no train or one train is approaching or present - Lights and audible warning are off
When one train is approaching or present and another train approaches –
1) Red “Danger” illuminates and flashes continuously
2) White “Another Train Coming” illuminates steady
3) Audible warning sounds continuously
4) All remain active until only one train is detected in the area
