Perfect flowers for your
Perfect Day
Every girl dreams of
the perfect wedding
and the planning
starts when they are
little.
The perfect
dress, the perfect setting, the perfect man, the
perfect colors, even down to the perfect
flower. Floral preferences change dramatically
from one bride to the next depending on
personality, time of year and the beauty it will
create for that special day.
Marci Caldwell, a local Boonville florist,
says preferences on variety and color change
over time. Within the last couple of years
hydrageas have become popular and more
requested, but there are those that remain
faithful to the flower of love, the rose. This
season's popular color seem to be purple and
green. Special requests for colors and flowers
range from comparison to the sleeve of a
T
B
mother's wedding dress to be used in the
bouquet, to everyday ribbon.
Marci and staff at A Baker Floral have been
serving Cooper County and the surrounding
areas for more than 11 years. They can meet
all floral needs from an elaborate wedding to
an everyday "I love you" arrangement. On a
average, the shop does flowers for 10 to 15
wedding each year. "Weddings are a lot of
work, and I do all of them myself, Marci said.
However, I have found them all very
gratifying at the end and enjoy all of the brides
when they come in to a place in order."
A Baker Floral also offers tuxedo rental with
two companies to choose from making the
selection endless.
For more information visit Marci and crew
at A Baker Floral located in downtown
Boonville.

Helpful hints when choosing floral arrangements
• Go with your own style. Couples should not feel pressured to go
with a more traditional style if that's not something that suits them. Instead, choose a style that most appeals to you, be it neutral or bold colors, formal or more casual arrangements, and so on. Your style might
also reveal a preference for something other than roses, which is perfectly alright. It's your wedding.
• Stay in-season when possible. When choosing a floral arrangement,
it's important to consider when you'll be getting married and which
flowers will be in-season. It's possible to find most floral varieties all
year, but if you choose seasonal flowers, you'll likely pay less and such
flowers will be more readily available and durable.
• Don't go it alone. The wedding day is going to be busy enough without brides and grooms having to worry about arranging the bouquets.
A professional florist, ideally one who has come highly recommended,
should be able to work within your budget and produce a visually
stunning end product.
• Consider candles to save money. Many couples hope for a floral centerpiece at each table, but that can prove costly. If the floral budget is
somewhat limited, supplement the centerpieces with candles to save
some money. The centerpieces likely won't be as grandiose, but smaller
floral arrangements coupled with candles can create a romantic feel.
•Stick to the budget. Couples will find it's very easy to go over budget
quickly with regard to floral arrangements. But a good florist should
be able to work within your budget and produce an arrangement that's
visually impressive without costing a fortune.

Tradition behind tossing rice
Once a couple has been married, tradition states that they be covered with tossed
rice upon exiting the ceremony. The idea of throwing rice began during the Middle
Ages, when rice symbolized fertility. Rice was tossed at the married couple in the
hopes they would have many children and be blessed with prosperity as a family.
A false rumor spread that rice was harmful to birds who would eat the discarded
rice and explode, so many people now use birdseed or rose petals as alternatives.
However, rest assured that the rice myth has been debunked by The Cornell Lab of
Ornithology.

The cake
Everyone want a perfect wedding cake to help express their personalities and of
course to "feed" each other a piece of cake at the reception. A wedding cake is a crowning finale to a momentous wedding day. Couples spend hundreds of dollars on tiered
confectionary creations, which provide great photo opportunities and even better
desserts. Cakes prices can start at $100 and go up. The cost of the cake depends on the
amount of decorations and layers of the cake. Cakes preferences have changed and
people are making them more personalized.
The groom’s cake has also gained in popularity recently. These are usually made to
reflect something about the groom and what he likes since some of them don't get a
lot of choices when it come to the actual decorations. These cakes can be sports cakes,
western cakes, pet cakes or almost anything else the groom likes.
Here are some tips for helping to keep cake costs within budget.
Ask a local bakery or restaurant
if the pastry chef will create your wedding cake. Oftentimes, bakers who do
not specialize in wedding cakes will
make a cake at a much lower cost than
bakeries known for their wedding
cakes. I
Commission an amateur baker,
such as a friend or family member, to
make your cake. Friends or family
members may even make the cake for
little or no cost.
Keep decorations and flavors to a
minimum. The more embellishments
and designs you put on the cake, the
more expensive it will be.
Look into culinary schools in
your area. A student pastry chef may
be able to produce a cake at a fraction
of the cost of an established baker.
This saves you money and the student
can use your cake as part of his or her
portfolio.
Skip the tiered cake. Tiered cakes
require careful stacking and engineering. Also, if the tiers themselves are made of
crystal or another expensive material, it could inflate the cost of the cake. Choose a
lower-profile cake to save money.
Serve guests from a sheet cake. Some couples opt to have a dummy cake on
display or just a small cake for cutting purposes, and then have waitstaff serve from
a simple sheet cake. Guests rarely recognize the difference.
Choose ready-made cakes and stack them yourself. Find a bakery near you
that keeps a constant supply of specialty cakes in their display cases. Purchase 2 to 3
cakes of the same variety and find cake pedestals from a party or craft store. Embellish the tiers with a few fresh flowers and you have a tiered cake for a minimal cost.
Think about an alternative to cake. Tarts, pies, cream puffs, and other culinary
creations may be more affordable and just as delicious as a lavish cake.
And remember, when placing an order for your wedding cake, don’t forget the
groom.
Eagles Lodge, Boonville
available for receptions
Eagles Lodge 1022 located in Boonville has held many ceremonies and receptions in its back hall. Some couples choose not to marry in a church and
the Eagles can provide a great indoor location for the big event. The hall
has seating for approximately 200-250 guests. A cash bar is available upon
request. Kitchen space can rented for an additional charge if you would like
to do the rehersal dinner or a shower there.
The Eagles Aerie was established in May 1905, and the Auxiliary was instituted in January 1955. Barbara Cornine, a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, remembers as a child, that the Eagles Lodge was in downtown
Boonville. It was located over the building that currently houses the video
store at Main and Morgan streets. The lodge was moved to its current location in the early 60s.
The Eagles Lodge 1022 hosts multiple benefits for the community,
fundraisers for charities and holds annual community events. Anyone interested in joining the Eagles can contact a member at 722 11th Street in

EAGLES
LODGE 1022
William (Bill) Richey and Glenda (Larm) Richey were married locally on July
9,1966. They were married at St. John's Catholic Church in Clear Creek, and their
reception was held at the Hotel Frederick which has been completely restored
since then but continues as an option for such events. Bill and Glenda have been
lifelong residents of Boonville and have resided here their entire married life.
When asked for her take on marriage, Glenda had some advice for future
couples, “Do not enter into the marriage contract thinking of divorce as an
option.”
Glenda also shared a little story from the wedding day.
Life is certainly not a bowl of cherries as you can determine by our picture.
During transportation of our unassembled wedding cake the day before the
wedding, dealing with July temperature, the middle layer of our wedding cake
fell apart! The ladies at Hotel Frederick were very sympathic and helped as best
they could to get the middle layer somewhat back into shape with lots of
toothpicks. Layer was frozen and brought out the next day for pictures
only! There were tears the day before but July 9 started our life together - a
decision we do not regret!

WEDDING DREAMS | JANUARY 2013 | 7
Kindness —
one couple’s secret
to marital bliss
Dewey and Lillie Mae Holst have
found what most married couples
never discover — the secret to a
healthy, vibrant and loving marriage.
After 67 years of marriage, they still
speak to each other with a love and
kindness seldom found in any relationship let alone one as delicate as marriage.
The Holsts met in high school after
Lillie Mae's family moved to Glasgow
three months before she was to graduate. After graduating in 1942 she and
her sister moved to Kansas City.
Dewey graduated from high school in
1944 and also moved to Kansas City.
He was then drafted, found his way
from one training camp to another and
wound up in Portland, Ore.
Even though they were both under
21, Dewey wrote home asking Lillie
Mae's father for her hand in marriage.
Deciding the couple had been apart too
long, her family sent her west to marry
Dewey. Lillie Mae endured a seven
day bus trip, a lost wedding dress
(which was later found just in time),
and a 14 hour bus station layover in
Cheyenne, Wyo. where she pretended
to be the wife of a sailor just to get the
last seat on a westbound bus.
When Lillie Mae finally arrived in
Portland, Dewey was unable to meet
her, so she hired a cab and found her
way to the address of the tiny apartment Dewey had rented for her. She
waited four days for word from her
beloved. Lillie Mae recalls the darkness of those four days, when at times
all she could do was lay across her bed
and weep.
Dewey and Lillie Mae were finally
married in Kelso, Wash., on September
4, 1945, by a Justice of the Peace. They
had been touring the northwest with
another couple at the time, and found
someone who didn't question their
age. In fact, Lillie Mae remembers the
kindly old gentleman even refunded
their $10 filing fee and told them to "go
have a wedding dinner on him," for
Dewey's part in the war. The four adventuresome youths ate at a hotel coffee shop, ordering shrimp cocktail and
four pork chop dinners. Even after the
tip, Dewey received change back from
his ten dollar bill.
Dewey escorted his bride home to
their tiny apartment. They laugh together as they remember the closet that
was made into a kitchen, and the two
burner cook stove that required them
to drop in quarters to operate. They
spent a total of three weeks there before
Dewey earned another oak cluster, was
discharged and sent home.
The Holst's story may not be the
most exciting love story ever written,
but it's worth noting they've found the
secret to marital bliss. Words of kindness flow from their lips, and a love
that is ever present is very evident as
they exchange glances at each other.
Whenever you see them on the road,
you will see Lillie Mae right beside
Dewey, when you see them in the store,
they will be holding hands and paying
very close attention to each others
needs. For you see the war took away
Dewey's hearing so they use special
signs and special squeezes with their
hands to communicate with each
other. You will always hear them call
each other darlin, and take care of my
sweetheart and the always famous I
love you.
Tips for a great best man toast
The best man toast can be one of the most memorable parts of a couple's wedding.
Sometimes a toast is memorable for its humor and heartfelt sense of appreciation for
the groom and his bride, while other toasts are more memorable for all the wrong
reasons.
Practice makes perfect. Few people are capable of standing in front of a crowd
of people and speaking off the cuff. A best man should take this into account and
practice his speech before the big day.
Avoid alcohol. Getting liquored up prior to your toast is a recipe for disaster.
Though it may seem like a good idea to employ alcohol to calm your nerves and
lower your inhibitions, it's not a good idea.
Get to the point. Avoid long-winded walks down Memory Lane in favor of a
toast that thoughtfully cuts to the chase and lets everyone get back to celebrating.
Spin a yarn. While it's important to be brief, don't be so brief that no one at the
reception learns about your relationship to the groom. Share a humorous anecdote
from your mutual past. This story should have an element of humor but don't include anything too embarrassing, and all ex-girlfriends should be considered offlimits.
Congratulate the couple. Because nerves play such a significant part in many
best man toasts, it can be easy to forget to congratulate both the bride and groom.
Don't just toast the groom at the end of your best man speech; toast his new bride as
well.
