Cyber Safety Lately I have been asked the question, “How can I support my child to be safe using the Internet?” by a number of parents. Although this has been a concern of parents with children in the senior years, it is never to early to open the conversation about cyber safety. I have collated some parent tips from Childnet for your reference. The internet is always changing, and being able to keep up to date with your children's use of technology can be a challenge, especially if you feel that your children may have better technical skills than you do! However, children and young people still need support and guidance when it comes to managing their lives online and using the internet positively and safely. A simple and effective way to get involved with your children and their lives online is through discussion. ‘Conversation starters for parents and carers’ 1. Ask your children to tell you about the sites they like to visit and what they enjoy doing online. 2. Ask them about how they stay safe online. What tips do they have for you, and where did they learn them? What is OK and not OK to share? 3. Ask them if they know where to go for help, where to find the safety advice and privacy settings. 4. Encourage them to help. Perhaps they can show you how to do something better online or they might have a friend who would benefit from their help and support. 5. Think about how you use the internet as a family. What could you do to get more out of the internet together and further enjoy your lives online? Source - http://www.childnet.com/parents-and-carers/what-do-i-need-to-know Thank you A BIG thank you to Rob Mielke for all the work he has done around the school this week. From clearing away the debris behind the shed, to other jobs around the school, your work is much appreciated. Footy/Sport Dress Up Day To help celebrate the up coming finals session, we will be having a footy/sport dress up day on Thursday 15th September. Students are invited to come to school dressed in their favourite team colours and join in the fun events that will be run on the day. Parents and Friends will be hosting a party pie and sausage lunch order day to coincide with our dress up day. Stay tunned for more details next week. End of Term 3 / Start of Term 4 Parents and students are reminded that Term 3 ends on Friday 16th of September at 2:30 pm and that Term 4 will commence on Monday 3rd of October at 8.50am for assembly. Kiley Cunningham—Principal Invitation to Parents and Friends You and your friends are warmly invited to a Parents and Friends Bingo night at the Sale Greyhounds, Sale Maffra Road on Monday 3rd of October (the first day of Term 4). A raffle will be held on the night with all proceeds going to Longford Primary School. Any donations of raffle prizes such as chocolate, wine, pamper packs, etc would be much appreciated. Donations can be dropped off to Kiley at the school before the end of the term. Eyes down at 7.30pm sharp. It is always a fun night and we hope to see you there, Sharon Duncan (Parents and Friend President.) Please note that this is an over 18 years of age event and children are not permitted to play. Prep/Grade One Swimming Update This week at swimming all children participated in safety drills. Children wore their pyjamas in the water and swam with life jackets on. Some of the things they learnt were to raise their fist if they are in trouble, how to catch a floatation device and hold on to it whilst being pulled to the edge of the pool, and that three whistles means to get out of the water.
