JULY 2015
The Chesapeake District is on FIRE!!!
3 Consecutive Quarters of GROWTH!!!
HELLO TEAM CHESAPEAKE (Wow)
With less than 3 months left in our year, we can’t sit
back and wait for the year to end. As of writing this article, TEAM CHESAPEAKE has brought in over 150 New Members into the
District. I would like to welcome our newest clubs to the District: The Colonial
Heights Professionals Civitan Club led by President Shannon Breeding and
sponsored by the Hopewell-Prince George Civitan Club and The Seven Hills
Civitan Club led by President Jeff Krantz and sponsored by the Roanoke
Civitan Club.
WELCOME CHARTER MEMBERS TO THE CIVITAN FAMILY!!!
The District isn’t done yet…more clubs will be chartering in the next couple
of months.
The District hit a milestone in the 3rd quarter by chartering its 30th club. It’s
been almost 20 years since this achievement. Between new members and
new clubs in the District all of this couldn’t have happened without you…
Thank You.
Let’s hit the 4th quarter running. Each club should be finalizing its Honor Club
Application for this year. We currently have 11 out of 30 clubs that are
Golden Circle (clubs with 30 members or more) in the District with 3 clubs
less than 4 members away from achieving Golden Circle. Also, 9 out of 30
clubs have not added a new member this year…WHAT? NOW is the time for
your club to have a SEEK Meeting this quarter. Think about that one person
who would be an asset to your club if they joined X(times) ALL the clubs in
the District. Think if every member in the District recruited just 1 new member!!! Remember…Our Eyes Search for Others to join in the Fellowship and
Service of Civitan.
I also want to welcome 2 New Junior Civitan Clubs to the Chesapeake District…The Waynesboro Area School District Junior Civitan Club and The
James Madison High School Junior Civitan Club. Remember these youth are
our future in building up Civitan. We need to get them at this stage in their
life. Junior Chair CARMEN GORBY…YOU’RE AWESOME!!!
As I mentioned in the last issue of the Pilot, the District will have a Service
Project this year at our Convention in Harrisburg, PA. We will be gathering
toiletries for a nearby shelter in Harrisburg. I am requesting that ALL CLUBS
PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROJECT. At the Convention please bring deodor-
2
(Governor’s comments continued)
ants, tooth paste, tooth brushes, razors, shaving cream, soap, shampoo, underwear, socks, feminine
hygiene products, and toilet paper. During the weekend we will be taking the items to the shelter.
Also in Harrisburg we will be drawing for the 2 tickets to the NASCAR Richmond Race in September.
Keep selling those tickets which benefit your club and the District. All raffle stubs and funds need to be
given to District Treasurer Sue Hepworth at or before the business meeting on Saturday.
The District has made tremendous strides this year and let’s stay focused to the end and continue the
REBIRTH of the Chesapeake District!!!
I am Civitan Happy!

DISTRICT FUNDRAISER
By Governor Morris Hudgins
TEAM CHESAPEAKE GET ON BOARD!!!
This year for a District Fundraiser, we will be raffling off (2) tickets in turn 1 to the Richmond NASCAR Race on September
12th at Richmond International Raceway. Each Club President
received 10 books at the Spring District Meeting. This is a
win..win fundraiser for the District and clubs. Each ticket cost
$10 and 50% goes to the club and 50% goes to the District. $10 for 2 tickets and a snack pack the
day of the race these tickets ought to go like hotcakes!!! This is an easy fundraiser for your club and
the District. If more books of tickets are needed contact me. The drawing will be at the District Convention in August.

GOVERNOR-ELECT GREETINGS
By Linda Hadley, 2014-2015 Governor-elect
Hello Team Chesapeake!
I am looking forward to attending my first Civitan International Convention taking
place in St. Louis, Missouri July 12th through 15th. I am excited to meet Civitans from
all over the world! We will attend various seminars designed to increase our knowledge and understanding of Civitan while we learn ways to assist our clubs and districts to continue to
move forward and hopefully expand into the future.
And we will have fun!
At the Convention, I, and my fellow governors-elect, will be introduced to the Convention attendees
along with Civitan International President Debbie Bruce Juhlke’s theme for 2015-2016. President
Juhlke will be honoring the Chesapeake District with a visit to our Convention in August in Harrisburg,
PA to personally unveil her theme to us.
I join Governor Morris in welcoming the new Colonial Heights Professionals Civitan Club and the new
Seven Hills Civitan Club to the Chesapeake District. I look forward to meeting their new members who
hopefully will choose to attend our District meetings and conventions.
My favorite part of the Pilot is the “What are we up to now?” section because I get to learn about all of
the wonderful projects, fundraising ideas, performances, social events, and other good deeds that our
clubs are doing out there in the Chesapeake District. What a wonderful variety of ways in which we are
helping our communities!
I hope that as you learn about the other clubs in your area that you consider visiting those clubs and
participating in their events. We are not just a member of our own club, we are a part of a larger community.
If a club in your area is hosting a golf tournament fundraiser, then dust off your golf clubs and sign up.
If they are hosting a Karaoke night, volunteer to help set-up or clean-up. You don’t have to sing. If a
club is calling Bingo at an Assisted Living facility, volunteer to help residents with their Bingo cards or
to serve beverages. Bring some Bingo prizes with you. Is a club in your area collecting school supplies
or food for a shelter? Pick up some extras during your next Costco run.
Civitan is bigger than just our own club. Let’s work together to serve our communities. Make an effort
to find out what other clubs in your area are doing and think about participating.
Also, think about having joint membership recruitment meetings. Maybe someone lives in one town but
works in a different town and they would rather join a club where they work instead of where they live.
If you join together to host a recruitment meeting and you invite potential members from different
towns, then you might just end up all benefiting.
Start to think “outside” the club.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Harrisburg!
I am Civitan Happy!

JUNIOR CIVITAN REPORT
By Carmen Gorby, 2014-2015 Junior Civitan Chair
I believe that words and thoughts have energy. If you think or say something, I believe it
goes out into the universe gathering power and purpose and comes back to you to
manifest itself into what you said or thought. When you add forward moving momentum
on your part, this is where dreams come true!
On June 16, 2014, in a ballroom at the Marriott Cool Springs just outside Nashville, TN, I was surrounded by 300 plus energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring middle and high school age attendees of the
2014 Junior Civitan International Convention. I was attending the Closing Banquet and International
Awards Ceremony as the newly appointed Junior Chair and the lone representative of the Chesapeake
District. If you know anything about me, I am competitive, so to sit and hear every district but Chesapeake winning an award was very frustrating, yet motivating. I said to myself that evening, “At a minimum, I would be attending the 2015 Junior Civitan International Convention with at least two delegates
who were elected Board members from the Chesapeake Junior District.” This is where the ‘putting it
out there for the universe’ part comes in and dreams come true. The Chesapeake District Junior Civitans will have a delegation of twelve Juniors and five chaperones attending the Junior Civitan International Convention June 25 – 28, 2015, in Orlando, FL!!!! Talk about exceeding my expectations and
goals! (The winning awards portion of this dream takes place next year)
Now, the forward moving momentum part comes from all of you, the (adult) clubs in the Chesapeake
District. Without all of your support this year, especially your scholarship donations for Juniors to attend
Convention, this part of the dream would not have been exceeded or manifested into what it is. Know
that your scholarship money is only going toward our active Juniors at the Board and Club level. We
have so much momentum for Convention and Chesapeake District Juniors that two graduating Junior
Civitans along with four chaperones are all paying their own way!
As the Junior Civitan fiscal year comes to a close at the end of June, I am proud of what we have accomplished to rebuild and strengthen the Chesapeake Junior Civitans. It is a slow and steady process
that can’t be done alone. I am humbled and honored to have such a great support system from our
sponsor clubs, club builders, advisors, and all the clubs in the District along with our District Leadership. Without you all, there is no forward momentum for the Juniors.
Here is a recap of some of our progress this year:
We have three new Junior Clubs in the District: Liberty High School Junior Civitan Club – Sponsored
by the Warrenton Area Civitan Club; Waynesboro Area School District Junior Civitan Club – Sponsored by the Waynesboro Area Civitan Club; and James Madison High School Junior Civitan Club –
Co-Sponsored by the Civitan Clubs of Fairfax and Tysons. Thank you to the Club Builders and
Sponsor Clubs who worked so passionately to see these clubs come to fruition. With these three
new clubs we have ten Chesapeake District Junior Civitan Clubs and 199 members. We started the
year with seven clubs and 128 members.
We held a Spring District Convention and now have a full Board of Directors with an elected Governor, Deputy Governor, PRC (Public Relations Coordinator), Secretary/Treasurer, two Lieutenant
Governors, as well as an appointed Historian and Sergeant At Arms. These eight Juniors represent
four of our ten clubs. A special Thank You to Jo Ann O’Toole, Joe O’Toole, Lynn Leitch, and Kendra
Wormley for helping to make our District Convention a success!
I am excited to be your Junior Chair for the upcoming 2015-2016 year beginning July 1! I can’t wait to
attend Convention with these inspiring students. I am excited about the dreams and goals we each will
put out into the Universe for our 2015-2016 year and the momentum each person will create and surround themselves with toward fulfilling and exceeding their dreams. Stay tuned, it is going to be an ex-
5

citing year for Juniors! We’ll fill you in on all of our goals and plans at the Chesapeake Convention in
Harrisburg.
If you’d like to be a part of the excitement and either sponsor a club, become a club builder, explore the
idea of club building, or just get involved with Juniors, please let me know at
[email protected] .
Thank you Universe and Thank you Civitans of the Chesapeake District! (Now if I can just get this theory
to work with the Lottery, I’d be one really happy girl!)

I am excited to be able to present the official logo for the Foundation for
Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. After working
with a professional design team, we were presented with three options and the officers
unanimously chose option #2 above left. According to the designer, the logo showcases the individual
and team-building strength of the Foundation, which educates and provides research for children who
have intellectual and developmental disabilities, while also promoting youthfulness and freedom. The
logo will be used for all marketing materials and on our website.
Please see the flyer for the Second Annual Whitfield E. Mallory Golf Outing following this article. The
golf outing began last year as a tribute to a treasured Civitan and Foundation pillar. Proceeds of the golf
tournament are deposited into the “Whitfield E. Mallory Memorial Fund.” Earnings of the account will be
split with one half going to the Civitan International Research Center and one half to Civitan growth projects. These were two projects in which Whit was most active and supportive. Although we ask that Civitan clubs support and participate in this golf event, we also ask that clubs promote the event, invite
friends and family to golf, or give local organizations the opportunity to sponsor the event. If you have
any questions, please call or email Joe O’Toole at 240-446-5631 or [email protected].
Another way that you can support the Foundation is through the AmazonSmile Foundation. Each time
you shop on Amazon, and use the special link http://smile.amazon.com/ch/54-6046721, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible items to our Foundation. We have
received a few small donations, and if you spread the word, those donations will increase. If signing up
for the program without this special link, look for the old name “Foundation for Mentally Retarded and
Handicapped Children Inc.” Public support of our Foundation is crucial in order to continue providing
grants to our Chesapeake club projects.
2015-2016 Officers and Directors will be elected and other important matters will be decided at our next
Foundation meeting in Harrisburg, PA on August 28th. I look forward to seeing everyone there!
SUBMMITTING NEW MEMBER INFO TO CIVITAN INTERNATIONAL
Please make sure that when you are submitting the new member forms to International that you are including your new members’ email addresses. The District communicates electronically, and if we do not
have your members’ email addresses, then we cannot communicate with them.

FRUITCAKE REPORT
UPCOMING 2015-2016
MEETING REMINDERS:
By Morris Hudgins
2014-2015 Fruitcake Chair
Hello Team Chesapeake,
By the time you read this we will have less than
90 days before Claxton Fruitcakes will be here!
We still plan for Abilene Freight to deliver our fruitcakes during the week of October 1st. Please
have your orders ready by September 22nd!!!
Again this year call your order into Claxton directly
and they will ship them out on the Chesapeake
truck to Richmond. I have spoken again this year
with Food Lion Corporate and have asked them to
increase their fruitcake order in each store in the
Chesapeake District by 3% from last year and to
have them out on display by November 1st. The
District received over $6800 back from the rebates at Claxton and International due to the hard
work of each club participating in this fundraiser. If
your club does not currently participate, then
come on board and make some money for your
club and the District! NOW is the time to make
contacts for potential new local accounts in your
territory. Also, I am still working on Corporate Accounts for the District and will follow up with each
club at the Chesapeake Convention. We will also
have a breakout session on fruitcakes at the Convention for any last minute questions you may
have. Again this year, I will be running the competition between clubs for increase of actual poundage for a gift certificate for 2 to Ruth Chris Steakhouse!!! Remember to plan accordingly for the
wholesale price increase from Claxton at .02
cents per pound and an additional .08 cents per
pound if you purchase the 48 pound shipper/
display…this will affect your club’s bottom line!!!
Let’s continue to lead International in total
pounds of Claxton Fruitcakes SOLD!!!

CHESAPEAKE DISTRICT FELLOWS
The Chesapeake District Fellows is a program designed to honor a citizen (or citizens) who your club

Each Fellow you wish to present must have at least a $500.00 honorarium made to the District. All of
the funds received will be deposited into an endowment, the interest from which funds our District
scholarships. We encourage your club to support the Fellows program enthusiastically.

CLUB BUILDING HIGHLIGHTS
Bob Shaffer, Chesapeake District Field Director of Club Development
There has been a flurry of activity in the Chesapeake District with new clubs being chartered. Under
the leadership of Governor Morris Hudgins, we have chartered three new clubs this year and have two
more clubs underway with more to come before October.
As everyone should know, we chartered Smith Mountain Lake in November, and I am pleased to report
they are off and running.
We chartered Colonial Heights Professionals on April 27th. This club is proudly sponsored by the
Hopewell Prince George Civitan Club. The club building team was Morris Hudgins, Bonnie Hudgins,
Patricia Keopsel, and Bill Rayfield. Members of the Hopewell club will develop this club to ensure its
success!!
On May 28th we chartered the Seven Hills Civitan Club in Lynchburg, VA. This club is proudly sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Civitan Club which has sponsored two clubs this year!!!! The club building
team was John Markey, Nancy Larsen, Charlie Ellis, Patricia Keopsel. Members of the Roanoke club
will develop this club.
Currently we are in the process of building a new club in Petersburg and a new YP club in Tri-Cities.
This success in club building could not happen without the dedication, hard work, persistence, perseverance, and teamwork of the Civitans involved. They have stepped outside their comfort zone and put
in a lot of extra time to make a difference in new communities. They each epitomize what a Civitan
should be and are true team players. Please take time to thank each one of them for their commitment
to grow Civitan and the Chesapeake District.
Stay tuned for more exciting club building news in the near future. For more information on building a
new club or sponsoring a new club, contact either Governor Morris Hudgins or Field Director Bob
Shaffer.

MEETING COORDINATOR REPORT
By Jo Ann O’Toole, 2014-2015 Meeting Coordinator
Upcoming convention:
We will soon be gathering in Harrisburg, PA for our Annual Convention. Please take
note that the hotel is under new management. The name has been changed to Red
Lion Hotel, Harrisburg East. A new/updated registration form is included in this
newsletter. Please get your registration in as soon as possible to avoid the last minute
rush that always seems to happen.
It seems like just a short time ago we were in Gettysburg for one of the best conventions ever. I am trying really hard to come up with ideas to make this convention as good or better, but will need help from
district members in order to make that happen. I’m making final arrangements for the entertainment for
Saturday evening. Until it is all confirmed, I’d rather not announce it. Please make sure to read your
emails and check the district website for updates. I’m still considering options for Friday night. If you have
any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.
Help will again be needed for all areas and snack donations will be necessary. A lot of people have been
great about offering their time, but it seems that it’s usually the same people that volunteer. Please consider giving a little time to help out with registration or the hospitality room. If you are new to the district,
these are also great ways to meet more people or put a face to a name. I will be sending information to
clubs soon on these volunteer opportunities. If you would like to let me know how you want to help, just
shoot me an email at [email protected]. Also, I ask that each club attending bring 2-3 door
prizes to be given away during the weekend. Door prizes do not have to be expensive items, but remember that if you wouldn’t want the item, nobody else probably does either.

2016 International Convention
On June 6th, a small delegation of Chesapeake Civitans found their way to Norfolk to take part in a video
invitation that will debut at the International Convention in St. Louis. We had a great day of fun and fellowship while learning a lot about Norfolk. Some of us will be leading two seminar sessions in St. Louis
sharing our excitement about hosting next year’s convention. I am so happy that we took this time to explore a great city. After really taking time to find out what Norfolk has to offer, my personal belief that we
will have a great convention was truly enforced. As I have said before, I hope that all clubs will participate
in making the convention a great success. Let’s make all Civitans jealous that they are not members of
the Chesapeake District!

LETTER FROM ANDREW CADWELL
CHESAPEAKE CIVITAN SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Following up on my article in the April Pilot, “Should Animals Be Our New Additional Calling?” designed
to expose clubs to the benefits of working with animals as a project, this letter from Andrew Caldwell,
one of our scholarship recipients who wants to be a veterinarian, seemed an obvious choice to share
with our club members. ~ David Shirk, 2014-2015 Scholarship Chair
Below is some information about volunteering for animals and some of the main reasons it is beneficial
to the world for us to support animals in need. Thanks again for the scholarship and hopefully this
could make it into the July bulletin [Pilot]. ~ Andrew Caldwell
It isn't every day that you find eight cats in the same room but it happens every time you pay a visit to
the Heritage Humane Society in Williamsburg. There that you will find far too many dogs, cats, and
sometimes even other animals in desperate need of a home. At Heritage and other animal shelters
across the nation, animals are given the necessities of life as they await the new home that adoption
will bring them. However, the animals at these shelters are in desperate need for the sort of love and
attention that house pets have on a daily basis. Animals are an often overlooked but nevertheless important component of our society. By reaching out to provide animals with a comfortable environment,
citizens can truly make a difference in our world by looking after our furriest friends. By allowing our
hearts to beat for every living being whether it be human, canine, or feline we open ourselves to exciting possibilities for friendship and companionship that we perhaps didn't know existed.
There are so many ways to provide support for animals in need. By adopting a pet or donating food
and supplies to the shelter, the living conditions of the animals are undoubtedly improved. Unfortunately, we may not have the means to do these things. Luckily, by spending time with animals at your
local shelter one can make a big difference in an animal's day or even life. In addition to improving the
lives of the animals that you visit, the hopeful and loving nature of the animals may become your own.
Sign up at your local shelter and start making a difference by building a better world for animals today.

Obituary
Captain James Henry Barrett, U.S. Navy - Retired, age 77, died peacefully on
April 19 surrounded by family at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis,
MD.
James was born on July 23, 1937, in Luray, Virginia, the son of Richard James
and Alma Dofflemoyer Barrett.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol Brown Barrett of Annapolis;
daughter, Kimberly (m. Gregory Patterson) of Severna Park; son, Kevin (m.
Teresa Vongvilath, deceased) of Annapolis; daughter, Kristen of Cambridge;
son, Kory (m. Julia Weber) of Severna Park; and nine grandchildren.
After graduation from the University of Richmond, James joined the Navy in 1959 as a Flight Navigation
Officer. During a Naval career that spanned over 30 years, he traveled the world serving our country,
with duty stations in Midway Island, Vietnam, Japan, multiple U.S. states, and Washington, D.C. In 1977
he served as the head Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Naval Academy, bringing the family to Annapolis,
a town he quickly came to love and where he would stay for the rest of his life.
Capt. Barrett had a distinguished career in the Navy, earning a multitude of awards and decorations,
highlighted by the Bronze Star Medal, the fourth highest military decoration for valor, awarded for acts of
meritorious service in a combat zone.
Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1989, James later became the founding Executive Director of the
Upper Shore Regional Technology Council (USRTC) based at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD.
He served in this role for over five years, and led the council's work in providing resources to help companies doing business in the Upper Eastern Shore area.
After his time at USRTC, James retired from work but remained active in the community. He was a member of the Annapolis Elks Lodge as well as the Annapolis Civitan Club. He served as Civitan Club President and was made a Fellow by the Civitan Chesapeake District, an award given for his contributions to
society. James also volunteered with the Salvation Army.
During his leisure time James loved to ski and play golf, was a huge Navy sports fan, and for years he
could be found almost every week with some of his dearest friends as part of their "Friday Lunch Group".

One of the projects that the Baltimore Civitan Club has adopted is working
closely with The Arc Baltimore’s Food Pantry. In the picture to the right, Debbie
Staigerwald, chairperson of the Baltimore Club’s New Member Orientation Committee, proudly showcases two of the Baltimore club’s projects. The first is the
“Bag of Hope”, a brown paper bag which contains ready to eat food and a “street
card”, information regarding local resources. The bags are handed out by Baltimore Civitan members to homeless individuals who are encountered on the
streets asking for money. The other bag is a reusable bag for foods which is provided by The Arc’s food pantry to economically disadvantaged individuals and
families, with special focus on families that have a member with a developmental
disability. Along with Debbie are other members of The Arc Baltimore community.

Power outages-not a problem anymore, thanks to Civitan!
Penn-Mar Human Services is an organization that supports
individuals with developmental disabilities in many programs. One of their programs provides residential housing
to individuals with significant medical needs. With the severity of the past few winters, staff were very concerned that if
there was a power outage during a storm, they would have
to evacuate their homes due to no heat. With the generosity
of our District’s Chesapeake Foundation, Penn-Mar Human
Services received a significant contribution towards purchasing generators for several homes.

CATS is a local non-profit that recycles, adapts, and redistributes used pediatric equipment and communication
devices (i.e. wheelchairs, standing frames, walkers, etc.)
to other disabled children from families with limited resources. Children sprout like weeds and CATS services
help keep disabled children fitted with the adaptive equipment necessary to promote their "timely" development,
social growth, and daily interaction in their environments.
At the tournament, CATS gave away two motorized toy
cars, a special project, that were retro-fitted and designed specifically for their disabled recipients. Neither child can walk, but the cars allowed them the independence and mobility to play for hours!
Dream Acres Alpacas and Anatolians is a local farm that
offers tours to the public and special needs groups. The
Alpacas are friendly, gentle animals that sense a person’s
(child or adult) disabilities and or limitations. Interaction
with the Alpacas and the Anatolians (special guard dogs
for the Alpacas) encourages those with disabilities to
"speak" and also to improve their physical range of motion
with more use of their disabled limbs - - hands, arms, legs.
