You can be a ‘First Nighter.’ Each year during the month of September, the Friends hold an annual book sale at the Scott Township Park Recreation Center. If you are a member of the Friends, you are invited to attend Members Only Night. You can be the first to purchase the best of the best. Sale items include adult and children’s fiction, non‐fiction, DVDs, movies, reference materials, hardbacks, paperbacks and more. 1. You will receive a quarterly newsletter sent to you by US mail or e‐mail, whichever you choose. The newsletter includes information on future programs, new book titles, an‐
nouncements of fundraisers, when our famous roast beef sandwiches will be on sale, hours of openings and closings and ‘thoughts and news’ from our Director, Janet For‐
ton. Also listed are dates and times of all regular Friends board meetings as well as the Annual General Meeting in January. Names of officers, committee chairs and a copy of the annual budget are noted. This is your organization and we want you to be informed If you have questions or concerns please contact your local Scott Library. 2. Your membership fee supplements the annual donation that the Friends are committed to giving Scott Library. For more information on

3. OOPS! Almost forget another special perk. April is National Volunteer Week. Friends and library staff do not forget the valuable contribution volunteers make to the Scott Library. The staff appreciates all you do and all the time you spend helping keep the library running smoothly. This year, director Janet Forton and her staff held a wonder‐
ful reception for all volunteers. It was an evening for staff, volunteers and friends to meet and socialize together. The table was beautifully set, the hors d’oeuvres and punch were plentiful and delicious. For dessert ‐ a piece of de resistance carrot cake and coffee. “Thank you Scott Library Staff” for a wonderful 2010 “Volunteer Apprecia‐
tion Event”. Well, there you have it. Not three but four good reasons to join the Friends of the Scott Library. Sounds like there are more reasons than not to join the FRIENDS and remember keep your membership current. Please see application in the newsletter. Inside this issue:

Electronic Version of Friends Newsletter Along with many other organizations, we are trying to reduce mailing costs and paper piles. Beginning with the Fall issue, we will send an electronic newsletter, rather than a print one, to Friends for whom we have an e‐mail address. They’ll be contacted prior to this with a request to approve (or disapprove) of this change and also to verify e‐mail addresses. This is a forum where everyone is
encouraged to speak - civility reigns.
Topics for the first meeting will be
the United States and foreign countries. Future topics will be announced at the conclusion of the prior

Election Day Bake Sale – May 18
Vocelli’s Pizza Cards
Gross proceeds from the sale of baked goods, candy, and shredded beef sandwiches were $557; Sarris Candy earned an additional $29. Su Plumley obtained a $25 gift card from Scott Twp. Shop ‘n Save, which was used to purchase cookies. Actual expenses were $129; expenses to be reimbursed were $23, leaving a net profit of $534. How does this compare to recent Primary Election Day Bake Sales? In May 2009 our proceeds were $354 and in 2008 (Presidential Primary) they were $987. The committee was very pleased with the amount of money we earned toward our support of Scott Library. We thank all of the donors (many of whom gave cash in lieu of baked goods), callers, and customers. Special appreciation is extended to the six packers who worked Monday evening to pack‐
age and price items and the eight people who served as cashiers on Election Day. Friends may sell Vocelli’s Pizza Cards at a cost of $10 each. The purchaser receives a free pizza and Friends receives a portion of the $10. If we decide to do this, we may have a table at the Scott Township Farm‐
ers’ Market (Mondays, 4:30‐7:30 P.M. at Scott Park) and at the Used Book Sale. Volunteer Appreciation Evening
On Friday, April 30, the library staff, rather than Friends, hosted
this annual salute to the many unpaid workers who help the library run
smoothly. Library Director Janet Forton explained that for several
years she has felt that it should be the library’s privilege to hold the
event. Food and fellowship abounded.
Attendees received a copy of the Scott Township Public Library
2009 Annual Report and learned of some of the pending changes.
They also witnessed presentation of a check from Friends to the library
in the amount of $4,000 – money which our many fundraisers provide.
Board Meeting Dates
FOSTPL board meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25 and Wednesday, October 13. Meetings will be held in the Main Meeting Room of the Municipal Building and are open to all. Friends Used

What is the word for our library?
ADVOCATE!!!
The budget cycle is gearing up in Harrisburg. Again, libraries are facing large cuts in state
funding. If you love your Scott Township Public Library (and any other library you use) let
your representative know now! Call or drop them a note. Encourage them to keep funding
level or ideally, to increase it.

As you may be aware we were hit with a 20% cut from the Commonwealth last year. There
were many other cuts to the state system which we rely on such as; Access PA, District
Services Funding, grant funding, and more. So, in actuality cuts have been significantly larger
than the outright 20%. As a result of these cuts we have reduced hours, staff and program
activities. Electronic database people use for research: Gone. Limits on the number of Inter
-Library Loans request implemented. The way we process holds and requests changed
significantly. We were already running a lean operation, now we are running on fumes!
In order to help supplement this loss in revenue the Township has offered the Library a
Challenge Grant. They will match up to $5,000 funds which we raise by Oct. 31, 2010.
These funds need to be donations which are UNRESTRICTED. Many of you have donated to
the cause – and WE THANK YOU! If you are interested in helping you can send a check to
the Scott Township Public Library and write Unrestricted Donation on the Memo line. [Note:
The wonderfully generous donations we receive from the Friends of the Library are considered
RESTRICTED funds, so they may not be used toward the $5,000 challenge grant.]
