Columbus Park Foundation December 2012 These words were not scripted but were the first to come to Hutch Schumaker’s mind when asked about his passion for parks and park amenities in our community. He went on to say how his fondest memories were of Donner Park, where he spent most of his childhood days during the summer and after school having the best of times in the park, at the pool and enjoying many of the parks and recreation programs. We often forget how our park system is a resource essential to what makes our City special for all to have access to green space, be active, get fresh air, and enjoy nature for good health and well-being. I recently read a statement from Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia who said, “I think the competitive, attractive, livable cities of the future are those that care about their natural resources and provide children and families with opportunities to be safe, active and engaged.” focus There are many components that make a city a great place to live, work, play and visit . This past year our concentration has been on the expansion of our People Trail Network because residents told us they viewed expansion as a priority. They also believe the People Trails to be one of the great resources our city offers. In the Spring of 2012 we were awarded designation as a “Bicycle Friendly Community”, which added to our previous notable award as a “Walkable Community”. This is a step in the right direction. A goal of expansion is to bring 90% of the community within 3 blocks of a bicycle or pedestrian facility, connecting residents to key destinations such as schools, work, retail, our beautiful downtown and of course our parks. Mayor Michael McGinn of Seattle, said, “In a great urban place, you have the walkability and access to transit that helps to reduce our reliance on single-occupancy vehicles. You have stores, restaurants and businesses nearby. You have vibrant, busy streets full of people and activity. And you have parks and open spaces for people to gather or to simply be quiet and enjoy the city’s incredible beauty. You have to have all the elements in place to create great spaces and parks are essential to that.” For these reasons and many more, The Columbus Park Foundation has created The Generations Club. Take a peek inside to hear what our Mayor has to say about Parks & Recreation and learn more about how you can help the sustainability and growth of our parks and park programs... for generations to come. Those who came before us cared about these amenities being available to those of us who enjoy them today. As Rick explains, it is this generation’s time to begin to create and leave an even better environment for those that will follow. “Parks are critical public spaces. They create connectivity, health and a natural ‘break’ from the concrete urban environment for residents, and they make communities more livable.” (Financing the Future: The Critical Role of Parks in Urban and Metropolitan Infrastructure) Our Parks are a free resource to residents, and the Columbus Parks & Recreation Department strives to keep fee based programs at the lowest costs possible. Public funding will never cover what it takes to maintain what our great City offers, so it is crucial that the formation of partnerships are created to sustain our parks, People Trails, and unique recreational facilities for the good of our health. Quality of life is crucial to the well-being of our residents. Through the Generations Club, you can truly make a difference. Your annual gift to The Columbus Park Foundation Endowment will help to build the funds that will carry on the legacy of beautiful Parks and unique recreation facilities that past generations invested in for the good of our community. The once available Transportation Enhancement federal dollars, we planned to pursue, have been revised and there is uncertainty to the amount of funding available. There will need to be more creative thinking and pursuit of additional dollars in order to assure the $4,000,000.00 in “other sources” is acquired. The good news is the community has generously contributed (defined as “cash collected”) approximately 50% of the Campaign goal. The even better news is 97% of the campaign goal has been reached through pledges made over the course To watch all the photos come to life, go to the back page to learn how. of the next three years. Columbus Park Foundation December 2012 If you have not yet contributed to the People Trail expansion, become “A Friend of the People Trail Network” and join others who want to see this expansion. You too can proudly wear your “Join The Movement” dri-fit shirt and “Inch to Mile” bracelets and demonstrate to others your support for alternative transportation. Go to columbusparkfoundation.org to determine your level of giving or stop in Donner Center to pick up information. Every gift gets us that much closer to construction. oesn’t grow on d y tr ne s... ee We end the year with much to celebrate. Nearly $1 million in private funding has been pledged to the Campaign. Three projects have been completed and several projects are in progress. Among the most exciting projects is the connection entitled “the Downtown Trail” which will connect Jonathan Moore Pike and Mill Race Park to State Street and the existing Haw Creek trail. How can you help? Columbus, and are part of the Parks Department, are because of the people that came before us. People who really cared and decided to invest and make a difference... It’s an important tradition and it’s something that as we go forward, those of us who are standing here today have an obligation to fall in line and say we too will step up and agree to be part of this great tradition so that those that come after us, our kids or others that come into this community, find it a fabulous place to live...” all the photos come to life, Rick Johnson Togowatch to the back page to learn how. cs The Catalyst in the Campaign, the Heritage Fund, challenged community members to show their support for the expansion by raising an additional $250,000.00 to match their generous, lead contribution. The community came to hear the “big announcement”, pertaining to their People Trails, during the biggest Tour de’ Trails event in its history of 11 years. This was the start of a succesful year... • Construction cannot begin until contributions are actually collected. • There is uncertainty as to the amount of “Federal Funding” available and we know these funds have been reduced. • The Heritage Fund’s challenge was a $250,000.00 challenge to the general public and to-date $100,000.00 has been contributed (and collected) from the general public. “We all know that the things that are great here in ng In less than six months, by spreading the word about the value of investing in such an infrastructure, our Campaign Leadership Committee raised more than half of the Campaign goal in time for a public kick-off event in April 2012, during the Annual Tour de’ Trails event. We are grateful to Rick Johnson, Dave Barker, Mark Levett, Bob Stevens, Hutch Schumaker and Jeff Brown for paving the way to a successful campaign. We are also grateful to our Working Committee Members: Laura Garrett, Angela Force, Linda Forster, Will Kostrzewsky, Patrick Pierz, Laura Hack, Frances Jordan, Kristin Munn, John Wischmeier, and Jen Shaver. It is evident the community is excited about seeing the PeopleTrail Network happen. However, in order for Phase 1 of this expansion to occur it is important for the community to know there is still a need and here’s why: “A Fireside Chat” Contributing to the long-term sustainability of our parks... S This time last year, I was among a group of passionate community leaders who were strategizing to determine how to raise $1 million dollars in private funding to leverage $4 million in other sources, which combined would mean $5 million dollars in expansion of our People Trail Network (The key word being “Network”). The expansion includes 18 projects consisting of multi-use trails, bike lanes, sharrow lanes, connectors, sidepaths and other “facility types” to make up a new “network” of bicycle and pedestrian facilities. This would mean a more consistent corridor to allow diverse users to get to key destination sites throughout our city. This would also mean a strong focus on what is commonly referred to as “alternative transportation”. What is alternative transportation? It is an option for our residents to use non-motorized vehicles as their means of transportation rather than solely relying on automobiles. For some, this is their only option. When you ask someone to share the story of their childhood, usually a fond recollection of playing in parks, on playgrounds, going to the community pool, ice skating, participating in camps or other athletic programs is included. That’s what happened when The Park Foundation began a series of videos that shared, from the perspective of others, what the availability of Parks & Recreation’s amenities has meant in their lives. Our community is built on the pride and investment of past generations. Green landscapes, People Trails, unique facilities such as Hamilton Center and of course, parks like Mill Race, Donner, Mead Village, and Lincoln beautify our City. With the challenge of enough public funding available to not only maintain these wonderful resources, but also allow for the growth needed to keep up with the demand of new and improved recreational activities, there is an essential need for perpetual giving. “I am thrilled to see The Columbus Park Foundation plan creative ways to bring public and private funding together to assure the sustainability of the wonderful recreational amenities offered to our residents and visitors. Our Parks Department is an essential partner in contributing to the environmental, economic and health benefits of our City. Our People Trails, for instance, offer a great resource for residents and are an attraction that draws visitors and even new residents to our City. Research shows availability and access to open space and recreational areas influence how active people are, and living close to parks and recreational facilities strongly relates to higher physical activity for people of all ages. I am grateful to those individuals who have been so generous toward improving these kinds of amenities in our City. I look forward to some exciting, upcoming projects that will continue to make our City one of the best destinations to live and visit.” Mayor Kristen Brown The Generations Club is a way you can help the sustainability of the free and/or very low cost recreational programs and amenities that influence the daily lives of our children and our community. As a community, we can impact these quality of life offerings and assure they are always available. The Generations Club is a program vital to the future growth and success of our Parks Department. Columbus Park Foundation December 2012 Chuck Wilt Youth Scholarships Something very exciting happened for the Chuck Wilt Youth Scholarship Program during the 2011 Holiday Season. Our wish came true... and more importantly, the wishes for many children who look to the Columbus Park Foundation for a way to participate in Parks & Recreation’s many fun activities that typically they would not be able to experience. So how did wishes come true? Thanks to the “Grant A Wish Program” offered by The Heritage Fund, the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County, we were able to better promote the need for Youth Scholarships and, like a Christmas Miracle, many individuals To watch all the photos come to life, and businesses responded. One such go to the back page to learn how. business was Elwood Staffing, who generously matched the contributions given to the Chuck Wilt Scholarship Program and doubled our contributions! Each year, the demand for youth scholarships increases. Based on financial need, once eligible,The Park Foundation awards families up to $105.00 per child to choose up to three Parks & Recreation activities. In 2012, The Park Foundation has already awarded over $14,000.00 in scholarships. This program allows children the opportunity to have the same experiences as their peers, experiences that can help to identify their talents, teach them new skills, build their self-esteem, stay active and more. “As a mother, I like my children to be able to be involved in activities that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to be involved in if it wasn’t for the Columbus Park Foundation...I’m very grateful...Her personality has definitely blossomed and she’s more open to friendships with children that she probably would never have gotten to know...” This is a quote from Bridget, a recipient of the Chuck Wilt Scholarship Program, speaking about her daughter Anni who enjoys participating in Parks & Recreation’s gymnastic program. You too have an opportunity to contribute to the Chuck Wilt Scholarship Program. Send your check directly to The Columbus Park Foundation in the enclosed envelope. We are grateful to the Heritage Fund for their partnership in helping us to give every child a chance to have fun at Columbus Parks & Recreation! Parks & Park Facilities 900+ Acres of Green Spaces, 23 Parks and 4 Unique Facilities We’re teaming up with Tony Stewart & Carter Oosterhouse to make playgrounds better for kids... Everyone should have access to safe places to play and be physically active. The evidence is clear both locally and nationally; regular physical activity is critical for healthy mental and physical development, the prevention of chronic disease and even reducing health care costs, according to the Prevention Institute. But even more important is for our children to stay active and have access to public parks in order to increase their physical, mental and developmental state. That’s why The Columbus Park Foundation has teamed up with the Tony Stewart Foundation, the Carter’s Kids Foundation and the City of Columbus in an initiative to improve some of our neighborhood parks, making them more inviting and safe places for kids to play and families to enjoy. “We are honored to participate in this wonderful project with The Columbus Park Foundation and Carter’s Kids to help provide children with all physical abilities a fun, safe place to play!” Tony Stewart & The Tony Stewart Foundation The Carter’s Kids Foundation, founded by Carter Oosterhouse (of TLC’s Trading Spaces and HGTV’s Carter Can), promotes activity, nutrition, and fighting childhood obesity. This purpose has led them to build playgrounds all over the United States. Representatives of this initiative are actively seeking sponsorships from businesses and individuals. quality of life “Parks and playgrounds are important spaces for children and adults for physical activity and are among ways to create or enhance access to physical activity for Americans.” (Taken from the 2012 Study: Let’s Go to the Park Today; The Role of Parks in Obesity Prevention and Improving the Public’s Health) As a partnering sponsor, your participation will include: • Media coverage of the positive impact from your gift. • Media interview and photo opportunities with key celebrities: Tony Stewart, Carter Oosterhouse and Amy Smart. • Special invite to an event involving community leaders • and key celebrities. • Reward of knowing you made a difference in the lives of children. There are many ways to be a part of this exciting project. Financial gifts are needed as well as in-kind contributions that can help in the preparation of building playgrounds. Volunteers are also needed in the planning of a community event. Hamilton Center Ice Arena ~ A unique facility Along with a unique facility built over 50 years ago comes challenges, and Hamilton Center has certainly had its share. However, programs continue and users push on despite inconveniences that come with an aging building that has had a lack of sufficient funding to address much needed repairs, upgrades and overall maintenance. Hamilton Center staff work hard to repair and extend the life of equipment and the structure of this treasured recreational amenity. In fact, over the past year, approximately $350,000.00 in public funds has addressed the most critical needs. Additional private funding, from the Reeves Foundation, generously assisted in a control system to help reduce energy costs. During the City’s budget process, the time and talents of many helped determine resolutions for upgrades and replacements to bring Hamilton Center back to the standards it once was. The Parks and Recreation Department was pleased to receive a much needed allocation of funding from the City’s repurposing of the EDIT bond. Work to make improvements to Hamilton Center can now begin. Because this funding is intended to be used to address several Parks & Recreation facilities, there are still many needs for Hamilton Center that fall beyond what the City’s funding can address. That’s when the “Friends of Hamilton Center”, a group who understood the necessity of bringing private and public funds together, stepped in. In April of this year, the “Friends of Hamilton Center” hosted an event entitled, ”Dice for Ice” at Mark and Wendy Elwood’s home. Guests were treated to an evening inclusive of the finest food with Chefs Gethin Thomas and Daniel Orr, a wine tasting, music, and a professionally ran casino. Yet all the fun was not without a purpose but rather for a very concentrated effort... to raise dollars to improve and preserve our city’s ice arena. Guests were made aware of the magnitude of needs and the vision of restoring Hamilton to its fullest capabilities. To this guests responded with generous contributions resulting in over $65,000.00 toward meeting the first phase of improvements for this cherished facility. The Columbus Park Foundation is grateful to all who participated in this event and to those who will continue to support our unique, community gem. Hamilton Center offers a wide variety of ice related activities for children and adults, as well as a very intimate and unique option for events. It also remains on our City’s architectural tour, making Columbus unique by design. If you would like to learn more about the vision for Hamilton Center, please contact the Columbus Park Foundation and watch for upcoming ways you too can help to grow Hamilton Center into the future...
