SPRING 2013 - Walt Disney World
“Springtime with Mickey” by Rob Kaz. Disney fans may already know Rob as a Legacy Artist with Disney Fine Art. “I am one of the biggest fans of animation art you’ll meet, and being able to paint Disney is really an honor,” he says. Rob has held many jobs in his life—candy maker, movie projectionist, bike repairman—but by far, being an artist is the happiest he’s ever been. Micky’s back! New tastes and luminous lights For the first time ever, the Festival will present tasty treats at over a dozen Garden Marketplaces. Look for dishes like barbecue beef brisket with collard greens and jalapeno corn bread; watermelon salad with balsamic reduction; heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella; baked goat’s brie, shrimp and stone ground grits with Andouille sausage and savory bread pudding. Savor unique creations like “fruit by the glass” and even “frushi” in Japan!—as well as select beers, frozen drinks, fresh breads, cakes and fine pastries. “Epcot Springs Alive” for the Festival ® Enchanting new worlds and fabulous new tastes March 6—May 19 at the 2013 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, there’ll be thousands of colorful blooms and more than 70 Disney Character topiaries (including one inspired by Disney•Pixar’s Monsters University). But that’s not all. You’ll even stroll through the marvelous land of Oz! ® “This will be one of the biggest single areas we’ve ever created for the Festival,” says Eric Darden, Manager of Horticulture. “It starts in the ‘Kansas’ section, where kids can play midway games in the tents. As you walk along, you’ll travel to the land of Oz, where the kids can enjoy the large playground.” A dazzling array of unusual flowers and plants will suggest the setting of Walt Disney Pictures’ Oz The Great and Powerful. PLUS, select gardens will sparkle with light every night! “Almost all the gardens will be lit for nighttime viewing,” adds Eric. “So now, you’ll be able to experience attractions like Soarin’®, see demonstrations and enjoy the gardens, day and night.” Cars and butterflies Start your engines: there’s a new topiary area where Lightning McQueen and Mater from Disney•Pixar’s Cars have made a pit stop! It’s near the newly re-imagined Test Track® Presented by Chevrolet®. The Disney Fairies put Tinker Bell in charge of the popular butterfly garden. You can watch the amazing stages of butterfly transformation. The fairies may be away, tending to their forest friends, but they’ll be there in spirit! To tie all these experiences together, favorite HGTV celebrities will be here for appearances and demonstrations that will enhance your home and table. So don’t miss a moment. The best way to get the most of your Epcot® International Flower & Garden Festival experience is by visiting the mobile website at EpcotInSpring.com. Last year, during the Flower Power Concert Series, Monkees original lead singer Micky Dolenz stepped in for his “brother” in music, the legendary Davy Jones. Mutual affection beamed between Micky and the Guests. Micky’s been a Disney fan since childhood. “I loved the Mickey Mouse Club; I had a terrible crush on Cheryl Holdridge and, of course, Annette [who later appeared in The Monkees’ innovative feature film, Head]. “It’s part of almost everyone’s childhood. I’m a big fan of Tomorrowland®, with all the science stuff, and Frontierland®—especially Tom Sawyer Island.” Micky was especially happy to hear that one of his favorites, Tom Sawyer Island, can still be enjoyed at Magic Kingdom® Park! See the complete Flower Power Concert lineup on the calendar page. It’s a Passholder-exclusive Duck pin! Re-Discovering America: Family Treasures from The Kinsey Collection tells that story through more than 40 pieces of art, artifacts, books, sculptures and documents on display at the American Heritage Gallery at Epcot®. Bernard and Shirley Kinsey amassed these personal treasures of African-American art and history dating back to the 17th century in their travels to 90 countries. The Kinsey Collection is the intersection where art and history meet, a virtual history book opened wide, giving voice to untold stories of accomplishment and contribution. The collection has been displayed in the Smithsonian, California African American Museum and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, among others. One such piece is the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers parade flag pictured here. The 9th Regiment and several other all-black cavalry regiments were nicknamed “Buffalo Soldiers” by the Plains Indians with whom they fought during the 1860s and 1870s. Other pieces in the collection leverage art and immersive technology to bring to life stories of triumph, hope and courage. According to a letter from the Kinseys, this collection is meant to connect “the historical and artistic elements of the AfricanAmerican experience that has created and shaped a story that we can know, understand and touch.” The exhibit will be open year-round, beginning with a preview in early March in celebration of African-American Heritage Month. This year, our Passholder Suite is available for two great Atlanta Braves Spring Training games: The Land You Know, The Story You Don’t Walt Disney was fascinated by Oz. He actually dabbled in film attempts in the 1930s and 1950s, as well as ideas for taking Theme Park Guests through the wonders of L. Frank Baum’s 14 Oz books. This March, Epcot® will “grow” Oz to life (see page 2) and Walt Disney Pictures will astonish moviegoers with Oz The Great and Powerful. Produced by Joe Roth and directed by Sam Raimi, the film stars Academy Award® nominated James Franco as Oscar Diggs (a.k.a The Wizard). Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz portray beautiful witches (but not all three are nice). “We were so lucky to get this cast!” Palak said. “They perfectly convey how their characters become what we eventually know of them. Sunday, March 3 versus Detroit Tigers “Zach Braff is perfect as the warmhearted, hilarious voice of Finley, the Flying Monkey. In terms of production design, Robert Stromberg [Alice in Wonderland, Avatar] is probably the best in the world. He told me, ‘I want to get everything in the film to look the way Baum envisioned it, to the best of my ability.’” We can’t wait to see the wonderful outcome of this brilliant motion picture collaboration. For trailers, custom downloads and more, visit disney.com/thewizard. Houston Astros Both games are set to begin at 1:05 p.m. at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
